Madoka is fairly popular as of 2011, mainly because it was written by a guy who sleeps in HG Geiger's room and reads Faust and worships a tiny shrine dedicated to Lovecraft. His work is generally known to be soul-crushing and people around the world eat it up, so much so that the Madoka movies actually got theater releases outside of Japan. If it looks generic to you right now, it probably is because they essentially have already been copied several times by other works since then. Doesn't hurt that it is actually really good and doesn't fall for most of the tropes anime usually fall into.
