Also, both the Pumpkins and NIN? Writers of the occasional good song, but neither of them ever managed to assemble a truly great album from start to finish.

'Siamese Dream' and 'The Downward Spiral' are solid from start to finish. They're certainly not top ten albums of all time material but they're decent.

The first five songs off Machina are the best thing the Pumpkins ever did

I have not listened to that album in years but from memory the various guitar tones used and production was impressive (although to be expected from Corgan). I had a quick look around youtube and "The Everlasting Gaze" is pretty average for a token heavy track. "I of the Mourning" had that lovely shimmering guitar tone though.

Cannibal Corpse when I was 18: I went by myself and it was an experience to say the least.

Second gig was Isis though. They played at Amplifier, most of the songs were from 'Oceanic' and 'Panopticon' which was amazing.
