I'm watching you.

The new expansion is live today.

Here's some exciting and terrible new things to look forward to, if you're still playing this game and didn't play around in Beta.

Features:
New class – Channeler! (You can read up on it here: https://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/index.php?threads/me-and-my-pet-rock-introducing-the-channeler-class.541914/ )
New Dragon-themed AAs
AA limit increased to 340
New overland area, Vesspyr Isles - Adventure, amenities, quests, collections, and more!
Nine new dungeons
Two new raid zones
More Tradeskill and Tradeskill Apprentice Items
New PvP item tier

GUILDHALLS
A new, larger guildhall is available to guilds who have reached level 95. The new guildhalls are accessible via the dock in Antonica or Commonlands and include an additional basement area accessed via a teleporter. Item count is 2000. In addition, tradeskill stations are now available as no-count amenities for all levels of guildhall, although personal tradeskill stations may still be used also.

AMENITIES
Creature Conjuror now has new functionality. He can summon powerful epic and heroic bosses that will auto-attack players. You can dismiss these creatures by right clicking on them and destroying them. He can also summon mirrors of himself - an Augmenter and a Suppressor. The Augmenter will buff the players within the zone only like a guild banner. The Suppressor will apply debuffs to the summoned creatures. The augmenter can also make the player not die during the testing. This does not stay through zoning, and only works within the guild hall itself.
Guildhall Mailbox amenity item, the Farseas Express Mailbox, now has separate entries forFreeportstyle mailbox, Qeynos style mailbox, and Shattered Lands style mailbox.

MERCENARIES
Mercenaries now gain health based on the player’s stamina.
For those who have completed the quest "A Gathering Obsession Beyond The Grave" there is a new mercenary for hire within the Village of Shin!
You may now purchase slots for individual mercenaries so you can rehire that specific mercenary at any time. To view, unlock, and switch between mercenaries you’ve hired, just open your “Character” window, click on the “Mercenary” tab and then click the “View All Your Mercenaries” button. To rehire a mercenary (without unlocking their slot) you just need to go back and hire them at the place you initially found them.

PVP / BATTLEGROUNDS
New gear and new marks for players level 95!

On completion of the quest line, a daily mission in Obol Plains and a weekly mission in Vesspyr Isles will also become available.
Level 90 essentials and advanced recipe books now exist for all crafting classes, and can be obtained via the recipe merchants (essentials) and the quest line (advanced).

Additional recipes are available to research from tradeskill apprentices. These require components obtained in the Tears of Veeshan expansion. These recipes can be scribed by all classes, but some recipes may be more challenging to make if you are not the class that specialized in that item.
Merchant Sllithzes in the Falinpol tower in Vesspyr Isles will also sell you recipes to make some of the adventuring items sold by Etyma Merchant Delvakin.

Healthy

I don't know, heard they suck

Meh

Does AB have an active goon guild? I mostly play EQ2 casually in between WoW/other MMO releases but have been really enjoying it this time since the F2P fixes have made it possible to actually enjoy the game.

How is the game if I just pick up the latest expansion and don't sub? The "instantly take a dude to 85" sounds appealing since I never got to see any of the cool zones when I played ageeees ago, and I recently managed to get a hold of my old account.

EDIT:I might be misreading the store page though.

You don't get a free 85 with the xpac, it costs like 3500 Station Bucks to make a level 85 char.

Seeing that.
Seeing as.

I'm playing this again on a heroic dude enjoying the newer content. Last time I stopped playing was right around Sentinel's Fate's release. It's cool to see how active AB still is, but there seems to be barely any goons logging on lately. My illusionist is still in the guild but if I could get my new guy (Otamot) invited that'd be cool.

Itemization in this expansion is really awesome.

I have been having a blast on my coercer in the new content with all the new gear. I have a charm that when I click it, a cow comes out and does damage to epic targets. A neck that gives an 800% boost to deity pet stats. A wrist that increments out of combat speed by 10% increments per kill up to 160%.

There's so much versatility with armor pieces. The way it works is good and bad. You get the daily mission from the heroic you want to do, and when you complete the quest you receive a box with a random piece in it. It's predictable what you'll get in the box, for example one zone the box will give you forearms. So you're guaranteed a piece just for you, plus what charms / jewelry you win in the zone. Sucks if you want to run around on a mage and get loot for a tank though, because from the missions you will only get mage gear. Solos don't really give great gear, but a chance at war runes to come out of the random box.

All the armor pieces are upgradable by inserting gems into them. Which makes them pretty dang good.

I absolutely love this expansion. Also Frostfell starts on Thursday. :) The zone has totally been revamped (everything you love will still be there, it just doesn't look like a 3rd grader made the zone).

Channeler sounds relatively unique, though it seems like a kitchen sink class of underutilized EQ2 ideas. They also seem to have stolen WoW's LFR loot system, which was probably wise. The idea of Frostfell not looking like smed's 9 year old daughter made it upsets me greatly though.

So after reading things they appear to be charging $40 for a Siren's Grotto level content patch lumped with a new class and a few AA?

I have a stupid amount of SC but $40 seems a bit expensive for only a couple nostalgia zones (Highkeep, Temple of Veeshan).

Chapter One:
When I first saw Sparky, he reminded me of my favorite comb. He was missing a lot of teeth.
So...
* I am interested in learning about the world and the lore prior to the launch of EQ:N (even though they're going to change a fair amount of it somehow, from what I hear), AND
* I recently restarted my WoW subscription (after 5 years away) with a brand new Priest (no gold, no bags, no anything), and am having a pretty good time with how smooth the gameplay is, AND
* I occasionally dick around on my 80 Death Knight for the giggles of just blowing through stuff like it was butter. AND
* I am willing to drop the SC on an 85 character.
* My current MMO setup uses bars that are 4x3, to match the Belkin/Razer Nostromo I use with my left hand.

My questions would be:
* What sort of character (or duo of characters if I get the GF to give it a whack with me) provides the smoothest, most accessible experience?
* Can I set up the UI to sort of match my current set up (2x 4x3 bars just below my character, and two more 4x3 bars that appear only on mouseover below those. Pretty much everything else is hidden)
* Which zones are Must See?
* Do the characters ever stop being so horribly uncanny valley with their looks, textures, and animations, or does EQ2 just have some inbuilt limitation around animation, texture, and art direction that means that the latest greatest content still looks janky, awkward and stiff?

I've been trying for two nights now to buy a ToV key in chat (via SC gifts and/or Kronos). No luck yet. I imagine ToV will have to drop in price before people consider selling keys.

Lemme stop you there. EQ lore is basically the original release through Planes of Power. Most of Next will draw from that. EQ after Planes of Power was a complete mess of retconning, and EQ2 has always felt like a fanfic. The only important thing to take from EQ2 is that the god of healing before Rodcet Nife was Anashti Sul (who I hear will be mentioned in EQ Next?). That's it.

If this is your first time playing EQ2, don't. You will be utterly overwhelmed and burn out within a day.

* Shadow Knight. If your girlfriend wants to play, let her pick whatever she likes because Shadow Knights are unstoppable engines of solo destruction for 95% of the content you'll see.
* Yeah, this should be possible. But note EQ2 has WAY more buttons than any other MMO out there. I think at least 3 always-visible bars is mandatory past 50 or so.
* All of Kingdom of Sky and Kunark, some Faydark. Use the 'Golden Path' breadcrumb quests as a general guide.
* No, but turning on the anime models helps.

Yeah, you can always play the characters the normal way for a bit and then boost them up to 85 later if you want. You don't need to make the decision when you first make the character.

If you want to group a lot with other people then your best bet is to get to 95 as soon as possible, because most EQ2 players now are vets who are either playing their level 95 characters or power levelling alts to 95 as quickly as possible (I imagine WoW is no different but I don't play so who knows). However, if you convince your girlfriend to play with you then I guess you might not be quite so worried about that.

I'm not big in to the lore and I certainly couldn't explain the history of any of the deities, but I am looking forward to seeing some of the zones and races in the new game. EQ Next is a reimagining rather than a sequel or remake so they can pick and choose what they like from the existing games, but you know they're going to have Nektulos Forest there in some form, for example, or it just wouldn't be Everquest.

Full of hot raspberry jam blooded passion.
I'm apparently really bad at this whole double experience power grind thing.

Can any one give a good leveling guide for the solo (+merc) player? I've got 4 level 95s and still can't figure out how people get there in 4 hours.

If you're solo, just pop XP potions and do quests. You won't get to 95 in four hours unless you bought an 85 or there's a new exploit out.

I remember years back there was ONE SOE developer who had supposedly been tasked with rebuilding the entire graphics engine to the game. It was showcased at one of their big conventions, and I followed his progress for awhile, but ultimately lost interest when it began to become apparent that ONE GUY - literally, just one guy - was never going to be capable of completing such a monumental task.

Does anyone else remember this, and if so can anyone confirm if his work ever made it into the game at all?

EQ2 has somehow always been massively demanding and massively ugly to me, always turned me off the game - as did the claustrophobic feel of the world, even in the big outdoor areas. This graphics overhaul looked like it might've fixed at least one of these things.

Shader 3.0. It was such a train wreck that they ultimately removed even the experimental setting from the game.

New content coming Thursday:

https://www.everquest2.com/news/fabled-dungeon-halls-of-fate

Got to Beta test the raid content... vent was full of everyone freaking out and being nostalgic. I didn't play during this time... but apparently it's a really big deal! The raid zone we did was very easy, and the developer said its intended to be easy so that it can be done by pick up raids.

My many CoX, always poised, always ready, always willing to thrust.

It is a big deal (for me at least), KoS was one of my favorite raiding eras in this game. If they revived all the old raids and made them relevant, man that'd be awesome. And it isn't like it'd be a super hard task. Tweak numbers and levels, fix some mechanics if need be.
