I've got a Kindle Fire 7 (7th Gen) that I don't think has much of a future as I seek to de-Amazon my life. I mostly used it for library books and cheap public domain eBooks. I originally wanted it for game manual PDFs, which it's admittedly not super great at. Also, it was a bear to figure out how to get a PDF reader back on that thing when it disappeared one day.

I think I'd like something where I have a little more freedom on it to put my own OS or at least my choice of Android flavor. I like its form factor (7 inches by 4.5 inches) so I'd like something of that same size or thereabouts, and I want the ability to put a cover/case on it so it can be protected on my bedside table. I doubt I'll move into much gaming onto this thing except possibly one game so I guess it just needs to be able to read books and PDFs.

In the 6-7 years since I got this thing, something else has got to be out there, right?

The small Android tablet is basically a dead market. Small tablets in general are a pretty dead market, and have been for years. Phones that used to be considered "phablet" sized are now just how big phones are, so not a lot of people see a use for a size in between "large phone" and 10" tablet.

My usual suggestion for light use is still the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020), because you can get them dirt cheap refurbished on Amazon (literally $40-50 bucks all day), but to give you an idea of how few your choices are for a sub 9" tablet newer than 2020 with a ppi of at least 200, this is basically all you've got:

Other than that, obvious choice is an iPad mini if being in the Apple ecosystem is what you want.
