Android tablets are also, similarly, mind-blowingly better than the HD10/HD8.

Do you have any particular (recent) models in mind? I've had a hard time finding positively reviewed Android tablets lately; meanwhile, my Nexus 9 is getting pretty long in the tooth.

Also, if there're good models: Do any of them run vanilla Android (rather than, e.g., Samsung's fork)?

I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (10") that cost like $250 from Costco and it's perfect. As far as de-samsungifying it, that can be done in a lot of ways. I'm sure you could flash a different OS onto it for the nuclear option, or do root nonsense, or ADB to get rid of the deeper apps, or just disable/delete all the poo poo. But frankly it's all relatively unobtrusive anyways.

I'm a tinker-person and never did ADB poo poo so I did that to just get rid of like 90% of all the Samsung apps. Doing so saved me about 0.5GB of RAM consistently but I never noticed before.

With my Surface Pro's battery slowly dying, and my Fire HD 10 getting on my nerves (I can't stand the modified FireOS, even with side loaded apps), I was just about to plunk down some serious cash for a refurb iPad when I found exactly what I was looking for, and I had no idea it existed until today. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/tablets/tab-s6-lite/) is an 10.4" Android tablet with a S-Pen with Wacom technology included and a USB-C charger. Comes with 64GB or 128GB storage but has a microSD card slot, and I have a 256GB sd card ready for it.

My main uses for it are comic reading, magazine reading/forum surfing and playing Crossme/Crossme Color and other nonogram/non-arcade games. Considering there are Android apps that I prefer to use instead of their iPad counterparts, I was pretty happy to find this, especially when I got it for $296 with an education discount and a 5% referral code that I found online. Much better than the $429+ a basic iPad/Pencil would've cost me (with no expandable storage).

It should be coming in Thursday. I recognize that it's not a powerhouse, but it should do all I want it to do.

I'm looking for a tablet for my grandmother who will literally only use it for Facebook. Is there anything else I should consider other than a Fire HD 8 tablet? Budget is less than $150, preferably something I can buy on Amazon if she doesn't like it and I have to return it. Needs at least an 8 inch screen.

Thanks!

Your only other option would be cheaper Chinese tablets. The Fire HD would probably be great for her.

I am looking for some thoughts on size. The main intended use case is reading comics in bed. Price is unimportant. 11" or 12.9"? The 11" seems like it might be easier to hold, but the bigger screen is tempting.

So from what I've seen in the last few pages, looks like the Samsung Tab A (64 gb for the 3gb or ram I reckon?) a good all rounder? Been after a tablet for a bit now and this sounds better than the Fire HD10 even considering the price difference.

I was looking to pick up a cheap android tablet, mostly looking at used ones since I just wanted to finally play a lot of the free apps/games I have through Amazon. Picked up a bunch over the years in the video game deals thread and whatnot whenever stuff would be free or you could just redeem Amazon coins (which were earned for free too). Is Fire 8 HD worth it with the $30 knocked off? Carmageddon is one of the games I got, and its system requirements says amazon device only. KOTOR is one too, but that’s any compatible android device. That and Strangers Wrath are the two most demanding Amazon games I have in my library (which are all collecting digital dust).

If that's really all you want to use it for, probably not worth it? Would you pay $50 for Carmageddon and KOTOR? Some games may be different, but I'd guess most that are on the Amazon store haven't seen any updates or fixes that made it to the Play store and iOS, too. That plus it being a budget touch device makes me think it isn't really ideal for replaying KOTOR or the like.

I ended up going for the 11", largely because of the aspect ratio for manga. Japanese paper has an aspect ratio of about sqrt(2):1, or about 1.414. A lot of the downloaded manga I have has an aspect around 1.42 or 1.43. The 11" ipad pro has an resolution of 2388 x 1668, giving an aspect ratio of 1.431, making it nearly a dead on match for filling up the entirety of the screen. The 12.9" has a 4:3 aspect ratio, or 1.33, which is further off. It would still be a bigger picture than the 11", but due to the difference in aspect ratios it would only get me about one more viewable inch rather than two. With that in mind, I figured the 11" was probably the better pick for a lighter device that is easier to handle.

The 12.9" would clearly be better if the goal were to view two pages at once in portrait mode, as the 0.75 aspect ratio would be pretty close to the a double page of manga at 0.71

I took a couple of phone pictures, using a fiver for scale. On a borderless page like in the second picture, you can see how closely the page size matches the screen size.

As a manga device it is expensive, but I think it is about as good as I am going to get.

I'm looking to get a couple tablets for my company to use with the ifleet app so we can connect it to our QuickBooks & smart service company files. We've been using 1st Gen iPad minis for quite a few years, I feel like we should stick with the iPads because of how many years we were able to get out of them with the heavy use they see but we are also on a pretty tight budget and I wasn't sure if any Android options have come out in the last few years that are inexpensive without being super flimsy.

It seems like there's second gen minis with unlocked cellular for around $200 floating around eBay and the like, is there any other option that seems better? I wish we could get them refurb through apple themselves or Best Buy but it seems like we're at the mercy of whatever they have in stock at the moment which is normally stuff out of our price range. The next best option seems like maybe one of Samsung's (are they still generally considered the best Android tablet?) but I'm very unfamiliar with them.

Other important thing is we need something that we can get OtterBox or similar style cases for cause these things will have a very rough and tumble life with us. Also needs cellular service, either unlocked or through at&t.

Where's the cake?
I'm looking for a tablet that I can use to access fairly large PDFs for vehicle maintenance schedules, I'm doing a work based trial and assesment and have been told to source a tablet that can accommodate a ruggedised case and screen protector. It needs to be off the shelf, it'll be sanitised by our IT department, case needs to be fairly robust as it'll be used around heavy machinery.

Budget £350 Inc case and screen protector

Also once I've bought it, I'd like it to be able to play movies as once the trial is over they'll let me keep the tablet if I choose to buy it off them.

Any recs for a tablet for:

A couple of 13 y/o girls that love to draw.

We're trying to decide if we get one tablet that they share, or one for each. It/they will be a birthday present, so not trying to break the bank but doesn't have to be sub-$200. But if the answer is "Ipad pro and it's $600" then it's going to be shared.

Doesn't need to have cellular, wi-fi is fine.

The answer if you need to buy right now: base iPad ($250 on sale) and a pair of Pencils 1 ($100)

The answer if you can wait like a month or two: iPad Air ($500+) and Pencil 2 ($130)

I only suggest the latter because the Pencils 2 are a big improvement over the 1. I don't think the jump from a base iPad to an iPad Air is at all worth it at the moment, and the jump to a Pro is almost certainly not worth it.

Though honestly the base iPads are probably fine.

Don't. There is a massive, massive leap between drawing with an active stylus with tilt and pressure sensitivity, that's capable of palm rejection (Apple Pencil, Wacom, anything in that price range) and a passive stylus that just emulates a fingertip (which is what you'll get for $30).

If you wait for a sale, new base model iPads have been $250 - cheaper than the $280 that a 7th gen refurb currently costs (I assume you're buying Apple refurb; don't buy non-Apple). They'll go back on sale soon enough. Unless this is for a birthday present or something, hold off.

13 year olds should be able to understand concepts like "if you drop this it will break and then you won't have an iPad," and tablets go out into the world a lot less than phones do. Otterbox-style cases are usually unnecessary for tablets that will stay around at home and aren't around young kids.

I didn't want to spend $100 on a Pencil or $80 on a Logitech Crayon and just got in this $30 stylus from Amazon...and it's great so far. Great palm rejection, latency and accuracy with writing is great. I'm not going to draw with it so can't really comment on that, but it's light years better than a dumb capacitive stylus. There's a bunch of what look like clones of it too, if there's a better price somewhere.

I'm sure a Pencil will be at least a little better, but I dunno how much. I saw some drawing comparisons between the Pencil, which has pressure sensitivity, and Crayon, which doesn't, and sure the Pencil was better, but the Crayon produced good stuff too. If you are coming at it from "they don't need $600 Pros", you might be balking at a $100 stylus, but I don't think you should be put off by a much cheaper active stylus.

I tried using my wife's 5+ year old kindle fire , and it works but 720p video on it is choppy.

requirements:
-can put vlc on it (so android preferably)
-has 30+gb of storage or can take some kind of sd card
-can play 1080p without choppiness
-bluetooth for headphones
-less than $150

That's it! The cheaper the better, but I do want to be able to play video on it properly while I work out. I don't want to spend 500 dollars. I'd rather spend 100 or so. please let me know what good options there are, or if it's out of my budget. Don't use software decoding on mobile hardware. "AVI" isn't a format, it's a container - and the video in the container probably isn't supported by the hardware decoder in the old tablet.

Instead of trying to brute-force it, just use Handbrake (or some other encoder, but Handbrake is easy and works well) to transcode the video you want to watch into a codec and resolution that will work for your device.

Bonus: you can just figure out what the old Fire supports and use that, instead of paying to buy a new tablet.

Looks like the new iPad Air comes with a USB-C port, finally. You'll pay $599 for the privilege, which is $200 cheaper than the next model up, the iPad Pro

I guess even though the "Air" model in the laptop is the base model, in the iPad lineup, the Air sits above the "regular" iPad ($329) and also the "mini" model ($399)

I don't understand their pricing or naming scheme at all, but it looks like the iPad Air has the newest CPU, and a standard port, whereas the regular iPad and Mini have legacy CPU and legacy "lightning" connector, so unless you're really hurting for cash, you should look at the Air or Pro, as the lightning cable is definitely slowly being phased out now

BLITHERING IDIOT AND HARDCORE DURIAN APOLOGIST. LET ME TELL YOU WHY THIS SHIT DON'T STINK EVEN THOUGH WE ALL KNOW IT DOES BECAUSE I'M SUPER CULTURED.
Apple's overall product strategy with lightning and USB-C is clear: lightning is for lower-power devices (phones, accessories, the lower-end iPad) and USB-C is for higher-power computing devices like laptops and the faster iPads. They're probably going to move to wireless charging to replace lightning over the next few years, but it's not some dead connector that's going to disappear from the face of the earth in a few months. If you buy an iPad today, the limiting factor on its lifespan is going to be either software updates (probably 4-5 years) or internal wear components like the battery. USB-C connectivity on the Air is a plus, but for most people, it's a very minor convenience that isn't worth hundreds of dollars.

The base model iPad is perfectly fine for most people who want to do ordinary tablet things with it. The A12 CPU isn't beastly like it was on release, but it's still perfectly competent for watching movies, making video calls, browsing the internet, and using apps like MS Office. It's a solid default recommendation.

I would have loved for my new company-issued iPhone to have a USB-C connector, just so I could continue to use the cables from my old Android phone. But no, they persist with the Lightning connector. Imagine if they went with USB-C, the money they would lose on headphone sales (and related licensing for Lightning connected headphones)!

Hadlock
Nov 9, 2004

I suspect that apple will trickle down USB-C to their lowest end devices over the next three years or so. The pro models got it... Last year?

Even the regular iPad now, I think, comes with a USB-C charger, with a USB-C to lightning cable, which seems deeply silly at that point

Everything in our house now is USB-C, except my wife's work issued iPhone, so we have a bunch of wireless charging pads scattered about the house for her and she stays topped off that way. There's one lightning cable, and that's in the "road trip" bag in the glove box of the car

Yes that cheap stylus was also fine, but at least this 2nd gen Pencil is just really good. Double tap to switch between writing and eraser is badass. Not positive if any old stylus works with the new Scribble stuff, but I assume no, and that stuff is really good too. Palm rejection on the cheap stylus worked well most of the time, but did fail occasionally which was annoying, and none of that so far on the Pencil. So I do still think a base iPad and cheap stylus is a good option, especially if your kid is young or price is very important, but gonna modify my previous recommendation a bit and say the Pro + Pencil is significantly nicer if you can afford it.
