Old Dante was a smug, smarmy, cocky bastard who was always ready with a cheesy one-liner. Sometimes that's exactly what you want to see. It's like a b-movie in game form. If he was any less over the top no one would have liked him. Since the game had good gameplay on top of that, it became a hit.

DmC's a fine game from a gameplay perspective but it lost the smug charm of (most of) the old games and replaced it with edgy-cool.

Then there's this whole thing about how I dislike old Dante and mind new Donte less but I'm not gonna open that can of worms. For now.
I'm not angry. I'm disappointed.

As for the bad movie thing, I don't think this is the kind of "bad movie" people enjoy. You can't plop in just any "bad movie" and enjoy it, enjoyable "bad movies" have certain traits people look for, and DmC doesn't really have them. Does that make sense?

For the record, I think of the old games as the enjoyable kind of "bad movies". For the most part.

I had no issue with Nero. He made a good counterpoint to Dante. He even tried to outdo him a few times in grandstanding (the scene with the benches, near the beginning), despite being more serious in general. Everything I've seen about New Dante suggests he takes himself too seriously. The game does, as well (only a nephe-whosit can kill a demon, and he and Vergil are apparently the only nephe-mabobs).

Perhaps he gets better later on, though. We'll see.

Since there was nothing that hasn't really been mentioned before brought up (Well except Kat but I'm saving taht one still) I'll mention something that does bother me:
Ebony & Ivory

In the old games they were a pair of heavilly customized Colt M1911A1's. Now the M1911 is a gun with a lot of history behind it. It was the official sidearm of the Military until the late 80's and it still is even used by some servicemen today. Not bad for a gun that's over a centry old. It is hailed as a good dependable firearm by both collectors and military specialists alike. So it makes sense that Dante would use a pair of them when you consider that his profession is a Devil hunter.

Now for that New and "hip" Ebony & Ivory:

They're a pair of desert eagles. Now why this bothers me so is that The Desert Eagle is basically the Mid Life crisis Prosche of firearms. Desert Eagles are big and heavy and while they pack a punch they are quite slow to fire and are inaccurate as all hell. They only got into popular culture because they were used in action movies becasue they are big and flashy. So they only people who would use them in real life are Middle age men and men with tiny Penises. What else bothers me about the new Ebony & Ivory is also the girp. As I'm sure people are aware of is that the magazine of almost every handgun is stored in the grip. So looking at these guns you have to ask where the hell do the bullets go? The grip has the wierd curve to it and doesn't look like you can insert a Magazine into it. Now before anyone argues that they only exist in Limbo I would point out you're wrong because we can see one of the Strippers that Mangy Crackhead bangs in the beginning of the game playing with them when they're not in Limbo, and Later we will see Mangy Crackhead fire them outside of Limbo. So what I'm saying is that the only reason they got turned into Desert Eagles is because Tameem has a tiny dick and thought that it would look cool.

Also when you compare the guns used in the original game you can see that with the exception of Nero's Double Barreled revolver and maybe Lady's big fuckoff Rocket Launcher they are all either practical firearms or demonic weapons of some kind. Now you could argue that because Japan has stricter gun control laws than in the States that they don't need to be as big or as flashy to be impressive but really I think it' more that it was just a cool little detail that they put into the old games.
IIRC, Dante makes bullets with his Devil Powers. I'm pretty sure this is established canon since the first game, BTW.

And I doubt that every man who uses a desert eagle is middle aged or has a small dick. Not that I'm gonna check.

True, but it seems that Mangy Crackhead can only use his abilities in Limbo, so it doesn't explain anything about him using them in the real world.

I wasn't aware that New Dante could only use his powers in Limbo. Where does it say that?

YEah but the whole being able to magic bullets into his guns illustrates a problem with the concept of Limbo. The rules of what Mangy Crackhead can do in Limbo as compaired to what he can do in the "real World" are never adequately explained. The Cutscene where he uses his guns Illustrates this perfectly, for a start why doesn't he just go over there and just kill his attackers with rebellion, I mean that would probably be quicker and a lot less risky than just standing there and firing his guns at them. So that just leave the question of wether or not Dante can use magic in the real world. It doesn't seem to be that way.
Nothing so far has suggested to me that his powers are only available in Limbo. Maybe other people see it that way, though.

Also isn't it weird that he's doing female angels only, Fallen or otherwise? Isn't that a little incestuous for a demon angel hybrid to specifically target for? It's bad enough that a 1/5th of this Dante's entire origin is "Wasted his time having mindless sex for most of his young life - in between fighting authority and killing demonic orphanage runners", but that this needs to have a hint of Oedipus by him going after women that share the only aspect of his mother we ever know about?

Although, this talk about actual biblical deceptions of angels being the things Dante sexes would at least make the images slightly more hilarious to think about. "Dude, she used every one of her 7 heads and 10 wings! Don't even get me started on the flaming wheel one!"
I don't know where you were for our discussion about Trish. Knock on the game all you want, loving a bunch of angels is less incestuous than your love interest straight up looking like your mom. Still juvenile, though.

Worst thing to me is how he gets the new weapon. Oh, the demon is dead, now you have Hulk fists! No kind of explanation, no kind of fanfare, and the weapon has nothing to do with the demon he killed in any way. At least in the other DMCs if the weapons weren't a direct evolution of the boss you killed (like Beowulf's gauntlets being based on how he fought or the three-headed ice-chucks from Cerberus the three headed ice dog) they had some kind of aesthetic similarity (Gilgamesh is scaly like Echidna; Lucifer makes swords and Berial used a sword). How does this boss tie into Hulk hands in any way? Do they give Dante a vomit attack?
My favorite was in the first game, where getting a new melee weapon meant getting stabbed in the chest or roasted alive.

Getting Alastor might be the best cutscene in the series.

Heh.

Of course, getting the guns in the first game could be pretty unexciting. They were usually just lying around the level.

Then again, most of them were just ordinary guns so it made some sense. Like finding the grenade launcher on the body of a dead soldier.

The giant vomit-bug demon giving you power fists? Less so.

It's not like Sexy Angels are all that rare. Nothing says that it has to be related to his mom. And Kat (who is probably the Love Interest) isn't related to angels at all, as far as I've seen.

This whole New Dante wants to gently caress his mother because he sleeps with fake angels thing is pretty silly. As stupidly juvenile as that photo was, I just don't see the connection to Dante's mom. Humour is subjective. If you didn't find Old Dante funny well OK then. Most of the people in this thread disagree, I think.

I tend to prefer DMC 3 and DMC 4 Dante to DMC 1 or DMC 2.

About the only thing "Anime" about him is his white hair.

He's a white-haired bishounen sword-wielding half-demon. Which reminds me a lot of the first anime I ever watched and which was one of the most popular things around when DMC came out.

Not that Inuyasha and Dante have anything in common beyond the most superficial. Still, I don't think you can look at old Dante and NOT think it's a very typical Japanese design.

His personality though is obviously meant to cater to more Western audiences with his wannabe cowboy dialog in DMC3. I will never forget "WOOOOO I LOVE A FAST WOMAN!" to Lady. It makes me hurt inside.

Yeah. That is indeed one of the most terrible moments in an otherwise good game.

Back when I was a kid, I had no idea the game came from Japan. I also never made the connection to Inuyasha until you pointed it out. It's worth noting that Dante's iconic weapon is a straight sword, not curved, so he never seemed anime to me.
