Hope this wasn't "off topic". Never did find what I was after, which was a nice, clear, decent sized exterior picture of a 1970s homeless shelter/soup kitchen. The idea I had was a plot by The Man (wearing his mask of "Big Business") to force the closure of a Shelter so they could bulldoze it and do... I dunno, something to the land. Though thinking about it, that is loosely the plot of The Blues Brothers movie, isn't it?

They intend to build the Richard Nixon Scientific Institute for American Progress, a facility that's part science museum, part secret X-Tech facility, and part monument to the glory of The Man. They'll have lots of dioramas showing America's glorious future, a future oddly devoid of minorities, gays, or the poor.

In order to save the soup kitchen, the protagonists will have to steal the Nazi gold the Man is using to fund the endeavor and find a way to convert it to enough cash to buy back the deeds to the entire neighborhood before the Heat can bring them down.

By why does it specifically have to where the shelter is located? Does the location have excellent Feng Shui? Is the Nazi Gold actually hidden underneath the shelter? Does the project lead have a grudge against the shelter?

Maybe I'm thinking about it too much. :v:

[edit] Actually that'd probably be a great time to turn the question back on the players "I dunno Why DOES it have to be where the mission is located?"

Well, in "Black Belt Jones", the Mob had bought up the entire neighbourhood except for Papa Byrd's karate school, smack dab in the middle of it. Without Papa Byrd's property, the Mob couldn't build the massive edifice they had planned, so the school had to go.

I'm guessing the kitchen is the same way. The entire neighbourhood is getting redeveloped and the Man doesn't want a soup kitchen cluttering up his plans for the future. That's my thought.

But turning it back on the players is probably the best idea. What could the Man possibly have against a soup kitchen?

[edit]Maybe the project lead used to be homeless and the soup kitchen is the last link to his life before he became rich and successful by selling out to the Man. Now that he's got his, he doesn't want to be reminded of his previous poverty and doesn't care if other poor folks wind up going hungry.

[edit edit]If the Science Centre is a bit over the top, maybe the whole neighbourhood is getting torn down to build a gated community of pricey condos and high-class mansions. Millionaires only, and what millionaire would want to live next to a soup kitchen?

The homeless shelter offers free self defense classes and foreclosing on it is the first step in the campaign of the war on poverty, which is literally a war on people under the poverty line.

I'd like to chime in with a few other suggestions for good 70's movies that haven't been mentioned yet:

Foxy Brown, Coffy, and Cleopatra Jones.

Along with Shaft and Dolemite, these are the blaxploitation films that inspired Black Dynamite, and are so steeped in '70s culture and style it hurts.

It's also worth watching Jackie Brown, which despite not bring set explicitly in the '70s, is largely an homage to '70s films (and stars Pam Grier, the star of both Coffy and Foxy Brown).

I'll Fetch My Sarcasm Robes
Oh without a doubt, Pam Grier pretty much invented the bad-rear end female action movie star, and she's one of the main inspirations for the One Bad Mother story in Spirit of 77.

It's funny because in the early 70's strong female leads were mostly absent from mainstream Hollywood films, but they were front and center in the Blaksploitation genre. It wouldn't be until the late seventies that mainstream movies would start to catch up.

I've made a point throughout the game to make things gender neutral because I want to see awesome female characters in Spirit of 77. We've had to make a couple of conceits to the source material with the names of roles like Good Old Boy and Tough Guy, but there's nothing stopping Good old Girls and Tough Ladies from getting in on the action and sticking it to the man.

Militant Lesbian

Yeah, considering the art you have posted in the OP, I was kinda surprised the only blaxploitation films mentioned so far were Shaft and Black Dynamite (which is technically an homage rather than a blaxploitation film itself). I think the 70s was probably the only decade you could get away with making a non-satirical action movie called Boss friend of the family and actually get it shown in theaters and not picketed. Blacks were starting to gain a degree of economic power and cultural influence, but still had their own culture that was largely separate from mainstream white america. It was a weird time.

I love the fact one of your sample Bopper Gangs is a bunch of Irish Football Hooligans. Especially since you've actually drawn them from a real life source. I wonder if Salthill Athletic had the same kit colors (at least the blue and white!) cause I could totally see them wearing the full home kit as their colors, not just a scarf.

To answer this, mostly because it's an amusing bit of background trivia - we guessed that the Salthill Athletics were wearing blue and white because it's the home colors of Salthill Devon Football club. Salthill Athletic and Devon Casual combined to form the Salthill Devon Club in... you guessed it... 1977 (funny how things happen at that time.) The idea was that the Casuals just wouldn't want to combine clubs and would instead devolve a hooligan Bopper gang. "You're not in this for the football anymore, are you." There's a lot of Easter Eggs in the text, actually. Find them all and win a cookie. :-)

Well, I'm not going to let a little thing like them not having been born until after the 70s stop me. What movies and TV shows would you recommend as a basic primer for the era? "70s 101", if you will.

There's been a lot of excellent recommendations already, both Buc and I are big fans of Shaft and Foxy Brown, as previously mentioned. The Warriors captures the spirit of the Bopper gangs, and I think Buc watched literally all of The Rockford Files series in one sitting when working on the Sleuth. I'm usually the go-to Rocker guy, so I recommend Velvet Goldmine and my go-to favorite Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band which are both delightfully bonkers in every fashion. Vigilantes come straight out of Taxi Driver and Death Wish. Oh and we really recommend catching Shampoo for Honeypots. Jesus, did Warren Beatty hump everyone in the 70's?? Good Old Boys are easily found with Smokey and the Bandit, Convoy and Dukes of Hazzard, but there are others we're also partial to - (Greased Lightning and Hooper come to mind.)

As a final throw-in, I'd personally recommend North Dallas Forty, which shows the way sports were starting to be perceived at the 70's which we take for granted today (drug use, commercialism, etc.) If you're also wanting to add more conspiracy things into your spin, I also recommend Three Days of the Condor and All the President's Men.

Oh one more thing - Although Buc and I did take a lot of inspiration from TV and films, probably the most consistent influencer has been music of the 70's. We've created multiple Spotify lists to accompany our writing, each game campaign has had a musical soundtrack, etc. We recommend listening to James Brown, 70's Bowie, Curtis Mayfield, the Spinners, Rumors-era Fleetwood Mac, and Foghat. Just about every NPC one of us creates gets a "suggested theme song" that gets played when they're introduced, and player characters develop their own musical "style" when they're the lead in any action.

Knowledge of the time period isn't going to hurt your ability to run the game any more than lack of knowledge about medieval Europe hurts your ability to run DnD. All you need is fast cars, bad mofos, bell bottom pants, crazy sideburns and sticking it to the man.
If you want a crash course, there's already a bunch of posts in this thread that recommend films you can watch to get the central ideas.

Also you don't necessarily need to run it in the 70's at all, you could easily reskin things to take place in the 90's or even today.

Let me tell you about why this game is so great.

The last session I ran ended with the players encountering a luchador drug kingpin named El Diablo Montaña.:doom:

The group confronted El Diablo in the office of his textile mill/drug factory. The building is already surrounded by cops, there's a police helicopter and a news helicopter circling the scene.
El Diablo launched himself at the Tough Guy, who responded by launching himself back at El Diablo. A partial success resulted in both of them shattering their blinged out brass knuckles on the other's fist.:black101:
While the Tough Guy threw El Diablo out a window and rode him down to the parking lot below, the good old boy scrambled to collect all the piles of cash in the office into a duffel bag.:20bux:
While the Bopper and the Tough Guy fight El Diablo in the parking lot, the Good Old Boy tries to climb out the window and down a drainpipe to join them. He fails his roll, falls to the ground and on the way down the dufflebag gets torn open, raining money down onto the parking lot below them.:homebrew:

So the game finishes with the characters in a parking lot surrounded by cops and news crews duking it out with a Crazed Luchadore while $100 bills rain down upon them.
