In some of the Fate unlocks (Daichi's, Airi's, Joe's) it's a bit more obvious than others (Ronaldo, Makoto, Otome), but the unlocks tend to have a Zodiacal theme of some sort - Daichi has monkeys, Airi has sheep, Joe has pigs, as examples.

It just so happens that the characters with a clearer (and/or existent) connection to such are ones we haven't really pursued, Fate-wise. It takes quite a few mental leaps to, for example, associate Odin or Fumi's Fate 5 demon with snakes, though if you go into it trying to fit the square peg into the round hole it's certainly possible.

It's not the most clean-cut rule and by no means will I call it intentional until I see proof of such, but it works for a decent mnemonic.

"This one's only practice. The real sword I intend to forge will be three times longer."

"Can there really be a sword as monstrous as that in this world?"

"Yes. I can see that sword... Somewhere out there..."
This is the point where Keita gets really fun, because I'm pretty sure that both Jungo and Hinako still lack the Vitality to use Drain Hit. Keita, meanwhile, will (IIRC) generally squeak into the Drain Hit requirement at around this point, which combined with Multi-Strike turns him into an invincible melee death vampire. Plus, since Life Drain uses Strength in its formula and it's also based off of HP lost, it's a decent anti-reflect option until you get the real anti-reflect physical skill.

I like having at least one character that doesn't just Evil Flow everything everywhere all the time, and the invincible melee death vampire is a pretty good pick for that job. Jungo does eventually get to Drain Hit, but he's also slow, and the fact Keita is preempting most enemies helps him stay invincible.

Yeah, personal preference decides on if you want Drain Hit for Invincible Keita or +Stone for Medusa Hinako, really. Hinako will generally pull out more overall damage, but the other build has its uses.

Jungo, on the other hand, has better things to do than worrying about damage or enemies getting turns or multiple hits or anything like that. One punch, one kill.

It's funny because despite Evil Flow's strength I don't generally run more than one party with it. It still has the downsides of slowing your turn order down and not letting you get Extra Turns after all.

In the unlikely event that you are unable to thrash the opposing side to shreds with the ridiculous range, I imagine having your entire team waiting it out while demons make range pointless and suicide themselves on you is a bit of a pain.

KNEEL BEFORE THE WICKED KING!
The Long Arm of the Lugh

Just got one new level to fuse demons for this time around, thankfully. And out of those 2, I'm only making one of 'em.

...Not this. I made Silky (Scathach & Gui Xian) purely to use as a fusion ingredient in the real guy. Never using Silky because she's basically Scathach-but-a-bit-worse.

Rather taking her and adding a Peri to make our Bifrons. This was needed to make one that's actually good at casting spells. Worth it too, since once he gets Fire Amp he is going to ruin dude's days.

(The other level 45 demon is a bad Avatar. I'll pass, thanks.)

Also opted to bring Jungo, Otome and Hinako up to level 45 too so they don't lag behind. In doing so, also grabbed a Heal Set Add-On. It's pretty self-explanatory and obvious what it's going to let you add.

Alright, so let's go save Io!

[Music: Elegy]

Oh... Hibiki. Um... I'm sorry.
It's okay.
Oh... Thanks...
......
Take it easy.
Oh...! I'm sorry... I'm...

You wait for Io to compose herself...

It's okay.
Mmm-hmm... Thanks...

The key to the Dragon Stream... It has to be resurrected, doesn't it...?
I mean... the barrier's gone and Mizar's still around. If we don't do something...
...I know. I know I have to do this. But...
But?

I'm so pathetic. I'm... the worst. Hibiki...
Anyone would feel that way.
Yeah... At least there's one upside. I'm sure anyone would be as scared as I am...

I... have to do this, right? It's just a death clip. It's possible I might not die.
I'm the only one who can handle this...
I'll protect you.

I'll do this... I'll act as the demon's medium to help all of you...!
I'm sure I can handle it. I won't let this kill me!
Um... thanks. I didn't think you'd come. I'm... really glad you did, though.

You say your farewells to Io before leaving...

Now that Io definitely isn't going to die when we do this, we'll dive into the fight, revive Lugh and have her live.

And the name of the event is weird sounding (because it's Gaellic) but relevant. Lamhfhada is one of the epithets for Lugh; it translates roughly to "long arm" and is in reference to Lugh's skill with spears (and slings, like the one he used to kill his grandfather).

...That doesn't look good.

[Music: Connected Hearts]

Yikes... Seriously? That black scar was the Void...? It's already reached Tokyo!
Mm... Yeah. It's the same as what we say in Fukuoka... just like Yamato said.
But this is the price for defeating Mizar... We all knew the risks going in!
She's right. We have a duty to perform here. All that's left is to wait for... Hm?

Oh... Hi, Hibiki. Um, sorry... I asked if they didn't mind waiting...
...And there you have it. We can't very well start anything without you, mm?
That's right! We're counting on you, boss.
Let's do this, Hibiki! It'll be okay... We won't let anything happen to Io!

Yeah... Even if we don't want the same things, I guess no one likes arguing with friends.
Mm. I sure don't. Everyone should get along.
Haha, in an ideal world, we would. But the Septentriones are still the way to Polaris.

...I'm not surprised. Well, I don't care either way.
I wonder how much longer this peace can last...
Um... Th-That aside, I'd at least like everyone to be nice for now...
She's right. C'mon, everyone! Let's go...!

Chief Hotsuin sent us the code to deactivate the seal. If we use this...
Fumi...! Are you ready?
Um... Wait. Hrnnnnnrgh...

You know what these are like by now, I'm sure. Usual "thing rises from a hatch and a phone turns it on/off" deal.

Hmmm... There. It's ready, Makoto.
All right...!
......
Now it's all up to you, Nitta.

[Music: Silence]

...I'm all right. Please... Go ahead.
...Very well. Okay, then...

Same as before. Little hatch, phone, etc. etc.

[Music: The Enigma Deepens]

Waaaah! What's this!? Hibiki, something just came out!
Something's odd.

Oh, no! Is it broken!?
Not exactly... Since the earth's infested with Void, he can't contain his own energy.

Okay, let's all work together and pick up the fragments of Lugh's power-- Hm!?

[Music: Countdown]

You didn't really think it'd be that easy, did you? We even get to keep fighting some new things.

Ah, power! I smell it, it's so strong! I'm going to take it all for myself!
drat... Demons can detect Lugh's raw energy! We can't let them take it!

[Music: Battle of the Brave]

The "piece is lost" defeat requirement doesn't just mean a demon picks one of them up, thankfully. I'm sure on a fresh run you could grab all 3 before a demon but it'd be absurd and not worth the hassle.

For cracks, the new birds give up Zandyne (at last) and a random Nue inexplicably has Maziodyne. Not sure why, but hey at least now we can grab multi-target Dynes too.

Everyone who we don't field runs off to a different part of the park, which is the arbitrary reason we can't use literally everyone here.

A Badb Catha gets to move before we can. Naturally, they're the next Avian demon so they have Winged Flight.

We'll deal with them soon enough. Jungo could move a step closer to the Legion, pop Evil Wave and kill one of them now... but then the Legion would probably try and hit him.

Doesn't make much of a difference if you let that happen or not, but we'll get rid of the Legion anyway. Evil Bind just annoys me so I had Jungo Assassinate it for once.

It, uh, was kinda unnecessary really. Exactly 600 more damage than its max HP. Goddamn.

Of course, there's also 2 Mothmen who, being Wilders, will never not Devil Speed. Only really matters for one of them though.

Since Hibiki's currently chilling with Vidofnir, he gets to this piece before a Badb could.

Still have to manually pick it up which you might forget to I guess?

Might as well get rid of these things now. Mothman first since it plays more into Otome's strengths than Hinako's.

Like so. Endure doesn't matter that much when things drop to 1HP immediately.

The Nue goes next.

And by that I mean "Hinako uses Multi-Strike and everything dies." The Nue was only petrified so Mikazuchi punched it once.

The Mothman up top will basically never not get to this bit of Lugh's essence without some form of zany plan. There's not much of a problem if it does, so I didn't bother to try and come up with one.

All that happens is 3 escape panels turn up now. They're all near where our party is, so it scarcely matters. They won't even come close to being used.

This Badb has the Zandyne we're cracking. Naturally we want it.

Vidofnir might be objectively outclassed here, but it can still hurt Ym a fair bit. Not so much its bigger brother who resists Physicals AND has the defense boost but hey.

...Not like I really need it for anything combat related anyway, but Petra Eyes procing on it is an inconvenience. I can't swap it out for Chernabog now. Bleh.

Oh well, one Fire Dance later and everything dies anyway.

And this is why the escape panels make no difference. Mothman can't get past anyone who blocks its way, so even if it somehow survives it has to go the long way around now.

It could go through Otome but ahahahaha.

Did I say before that it's really annoying that regular demons have Shield All now?

Because it is annoying. It makes no functional difference but it drags things out longer.

Not to mention it gives us Shield penalties on our Macca bonuses.

Badb Cathas do have Winged Flight so having Hinako stood there doesn't block it in.

It just means she can punch it really hard immediately after it picks it up.

The Ixtabs survive, but Badb herself got petrified and then immediately broken. So, uh, yeah.

Doesn't really matter if they survive or not. Now we have all three pieces of Lugh's essence or power or whatever. Just need to kill the last Badb and we're done.

But oh no. This is as close to it as Jungo can get and he's the only one who gets to move before it suicides on Hibiki.

It just happens to be 5 spaces away so Jungo can't punch it to death!

Or, rather, that would be the case normally. Ym got Evil Flow so it doesn't matter any more.

This isn't a particularly stellar use of EF but it does save us time so whatever.

And just to really rub salt in the wound, take the time to destroy everything here. Ym drops a Fire Dance wiping out Silky, Bifrons Bufudynes the Badb on the left, and Jungo Jungos Power Hits the remaining Badb.

All in all, not too bad a fight. Even if you're not quite expecting a fight with a gimmick like this it's not really difficult.

Possibly annoying without some form of keeping up with the Badb's move range of 5 but that's a pretty big if.

[Music: Exploration]

Yeah... I think so. I'm glad we did.
...Yes. There were some unexpected hurdles, but there shouldn't be a problem.
Right, let's send Lugh's potential to Io's cell phone, then.

Okay! Everyone who has a piece of Lugh, take your phones out. You too, Io.
Uh... All right. So, what do I do...?
You don't have to do anything. We're sending Lugh's energy into your cell phone.

......Yes.
All right... Everyone, send your Lugh energy to Nitta's cell phone!

[Music: Silence]

Waaaah...!

[Music: Connected Hearts]

Oh... Y-Yes... I'm... okay...
How do you feel?

[Music: Over the Brink of Death]

'Course she is! We made sure to protect her, you know. Like we'd let her die!
Haha... Thank, everyone.
Ahh. Thank goodness. Can I let out this breath I've been holding now?

Oh. Ohhhhhhh.

That's... not good.

[Music: In the Devastated Town]

Hm, now that you mention it...!

Your phone is ringing...

Of course.
Hm... Well done. Preparations are complete on my end as well.

It's time we awakened the power of the Dragon Stream.

He said he likes me.
...You know, Hibiki, you shouldn't joke like that or people will take it seriously.
...Be at the TMG at 18:30.

I-It'll be fine! No matter what happens, we'll keep Io safe!
Th-Thanks... I'll be okay. You'll be there, after all...

[Music: Exploration]

Oh... Yes, of course...

You all leave, concerned about Io...

So now we have absolutely nothing to do until 18:30. That said, before we finish up here we'll do this scene with Daichi. It's technically optional but it's important enough that we'll be doing it anyway.

Don't burst a blood vessel.

Rock, dude.
That's that rhyming slang, huh? I get the joke, but give me a break...
*sigh* Well, it's not like I was grunting at nothing.
See, it's about that scar. I've been thinking about it.

[Music: The Enigma Deepens]

Daichi points to the scar left by the Void's advance...

I mean... what is that? We've been told it's an "absolute void," but what's that mean?
Seriously?

I get that it's a bunch of nothing, but what's happening past the scar?
That reminds me... Um, Io said something about this...

At this point, Fumi starts to creep up behind Daichi.

I remember that.
Yeah. It was too hard for me to understand completely.
Anyway, so if the world is just made of information and matter is all piled up...

No.
Nope, none at all. It's an absolute void. You do know what "absolute" means...?

[Music: Exploration]

Man, Daichi's lucky that wall's there otherwise he might've fallen into the Void. What a way to go...

Er... around?
So, what were you talking about? I saw you grunting like an idiot for a while.
Wh-- Shut up! You don't need to call me an idiot!
It's about the Void.

U-Umm... I think I've at least heard of it before...?
So, no then. Concepts are the general summations of meaning.

...I give up. Philosophy gives me a headache.
What a sad case. I wish I could understand your brain. Maybe you understood, Hibiki?
I get it.

But back on subject, a concept is basically the definition of a thing's existence.
The "information" and "matter" you were talking about it more or less related to that.
With the scar, though, it's like the concept itself has been erased. Do you see now?
Ah, I see.
I feel sick. My head hurts. I think I'm gonna die from being so dumb. How can you understand all this...?

Even an idiot like you uses computers and phones, right?
Quit calling me an idiot... O-Of course I do...
If there's data you don't need, like emails of you cheating on your girl, you delete it, no?
Uhhhh... Yeah...

Shut up. I don't care about that. Anyway, it's the same principle.
Everything the scar touches has been clearly and utterly erased.
...Ughhh, it's no use. My brain's fried.
Hey. If you don't stop that nonsense, I'll stick your head in there and erase it too.

Then maybe I could get a little smarter...
Edit it, hm? I like that. Anything that can be deleted can be rewritten.
That's it!
...Huh?

[Music: Connected Hearts]

What? Huh? What's going on? C'mon, tell me!
It's Polaris.
So you figured it out. Keep it a secret from the Chief, will you?
Wh... Huh? Wh-What're you talking about!?
He plans to edit it.
Edit... Oh!
You mean... the way Yamato's going to bring about his merit system...
He'll edit the world.

[Music: Crumbling Routine]

Oh, okay...! Then if what Fumi said just now is true...

And that weird guy said so too! He said Yamato is gonna use Polaris to create a new world.
Does that mean he's going to edit the world itself like you would a computer file!?
Yeah.

S-Seriously...? Is rewriting the world even allowed...?
Oh, hey, Fumi... Can I ask you something a little weird?
How should I know the answer to that until you tell me what it is you're asking?
Oh, well... um... don't laugh, okay?
Hahaha.
Y-You're laughing and I haven't even said anything! But it's about what you just said...
If the world is basically the same as data on a phone or a computer...

There might be.
Oh... Y-You think it might be true? Actually...

[Music: Connected Hearts]

Remember when you talked to that weird guy about Nicaea?
He said the death clips weren't predictions, right?
Yeah.
So now that I think about it... Maybe this is what he meant.

I was thinking that what he said might not be impossible.

I see.
What, how'd you understand that!? I've never heard of it! Explanation please, Fumi...!?
Ugh, if you insist. Hmm...
One way of thinking holds that all the concepts that make up the world, past and future...

The word "akasha" is Sanskrit for "space," referring to the size of the medium...
That's where it gets the name "akashic record."
Oh... So, um, in that case...

Ahhh... you're catching on. That would be the case. Though we only have that man's word.
If we were to extrapolate outward based on that theory...

[Music: Crumbling Routine]

Wow...!
Haha, the keeper of the akashic record... We may have bitten off more than we can chew.
Can we beat it?
Hm? Why fight it?

The Chief's a smart man. He knows man could never win against such an entity.

So, yeah. That's how Yamato and/or Ronaldo are going to have Polaris change the world to their ideals.

We'll worry about that when we get there, though. For now, we have a ton of spare time to burn through. No more plot beats happen at all until we have to go to the Government Metropolital building 4 in-game hours from now. That leaves us with 8 events to kill... one of which is going to be Dera-Deka's meeting so we'll drop that to 7.

That's a lot of events to do. Who do we spend them with?

This map's pretty easy really, you can just gum up the ability of the enemies to flee and it won't really matter whether they get Lugh's bits. There's just nothing here that's really threatening to an Unkillable run if you've gotten this far. If I think of something else I'll post again later, sort of busy atm.

Surprisingly the game actually DOES address that anyway. They've sent teams, aircraft, unmanned probes, and demons into the void, and it all sorta stops existing. So apparently it's not just the blank spots that have been deleted, but an active overwriting field. I guess maybe killing Polaris would disrupt that aspect, but we're still down to uh three metropolitan centers in Japan for habitable space in the universe. Granted the human race probably is probably down to the tens of thousands at best at this point (given the desperation we see in civilians before Ronaldo gets to them it could also be like a few hundred people plus whatever JPs has left after Ailoth and so on) it may well be a moot point anyway.

KNEEL BEFORE THE WICKED KING!
Friday's Partings (Relations)

Mostly for show here, but let's fuse a few things just to get it out of the way.

Badb Catha (Nue + Take-Mikazuchi) is kind of a given, really. An update on Vidofnir but with Multi-Strike added helps keep her competitive.

Passives are basically forced to be Null Force and Curse, though. Ordinarily weak to those so getting rid of them ASAP is pretty handy.

Kresnik (Nue + Badb Catha) comes next, and he's infinitely easier to get here than in Devil Survivor 1 when a sidequest was needed to unlock him. Here? Just get a high enough level and he's yours.

No weaknesses, so can put whatever in the passive slots for once. Opted to add Pierce so his absurd Strength doesn't get hindered by things that resist it. Plus I'm pretty sure he's our earliest form of Null Phys so that helps too.

And lastly, we'll make Hariti (Scathach + Bifrons) since we can thanks to Otome. Ordinarily a very punchy demon for a Femme, I opted to work with her initial moves (Maziodyne + Elec Amp) rather than her initial stat spread. The Ma-dyne and Amp would be wasted otherwise.

Null Force because normally weak to Force, of course, and Mana Stream to keep casting for longer.

All right, that's that done. Let's focus on important stuff: chatting with Nicaeaman, and then some other people.

[Music: In the Devastated Town]

Hey, have you heard? I guess people from JP's are gathering in Osaka...
I heard some guy named Ronaldo Kuriki was going to go up against them.

A man you've seen before is watching the people...

[Music: The Anguished One]

The will of the species is coming together... Is this mankind's nature, too?

Yeah.
Haha...I see. So you understand already.

Just as those two say, if Polaris rebuilds the world, there will be stability.
Under one unified will, man will be separated from the pain of his fallen nature.
But... Will that be a satisfying existence?
No.

Even then, do you still wish for freedom?
Yes.
...!
I see... So humanity's potential has grown far larger than I had thought...

The man seems surprised...

The time to make a decision draws ever closer. I will await your answer.

The man vanishes, leaving behind only his mysterious words...

I'd say this might come in handy some day, but I'm not sure I can say that in good conscience.

For now let's not worry about that and instead go see what's up with Otome.

[Music: In the Devastated Town]

......
What's wrong?
Oh, Hibiki? Sorry, I was just spacing out.
The Septentriones have caused us to have a lot more patients... I'm so busy now.
I get home so late every night, Koharu is worried about me.

Demons are on the rise, and the black scar in Fukuoka is spreading...
I need to get a grip on myself.

As Otome opens her phone, a JP's member bounds in through the entrance.

[Music: Countdown]

Get him to the ER immediately!

Otome glances at her phone...

Hibiki, can you please explain what happened to Koharu? She'll be worried...
Of course!
Thank you... You're always helping me.

Otome hands you her phone and runs out of the room...

You answer the phone...

[Music: Connected Hearts]

Wait, you're not Mom...

You explain why Otome couldn't be there to talk...

Okay... I understand.
U-Um... Mom's not hurt, is she? If she's not, then I'll be okay...

Koharu is obviously concerned about Otome, but she hangs up...

[Music: Exploration]

Let's go see what Fumi's up to now. I'm sure it'll be reasonable and not at all dangerous.

There's actually two different versions of this scene, but I have no idea what determines which one you see. It's not a Jungo alive or not thing, since both can be done regardless.

Hey, Hibiki. We're about to begin the final experiment.
After this, I'll have all the data I need. Then, I'll be able to complete my research!

[Music: A Moment of Rest]

Mhm... The last experiment. It's kind of sad...

Well, then, Jungo. You know the drill.
Mhm. I'll do my best.
Aaaaaaaand it's on.

The machine steadily grows louder and louder...

Excellent. A beautiful pattern, as always...

Hm...?

[Music: Countdown]

And around here's where the scene diverges. Also the screen shakes. A lot.

Wait, what's that? Weird.
...!

Something is amiss. Jungo seems to be in pain...

...!
Wh-What is this...? The machine's out of control... I thought it was repaired...
No way... This can't be possible!
Stop the machine!

Turn it off!
...! All right...! Hang in there, Jungo!
...!? I can't shut it off manually...!? Then...!

[Music: Silence]

Is it off now...? Are we good to go?
Oh, right... Jungo!
Mhm...

[Music: Elegy]

He's alive... Good. Um, are you all right?

Oh... That's... good. You seem to be all right.
I'm really sorry. That was totally beyond my predictions of what might happen.
Don't worry. I'm okay. Let's try it one more time...
Mm...
Don't do it.
Yeah... Let's not. This app isn't something humans can control, anyway...

...Who are you and what did you do with Fumi?

......
...Sorry, just leave me alone. I need some time to concentrate.
Mhm...

Jungo leaves... Fumi is quiet...

......

You decide to leave, too...

[Music: Exploration]

It's nice when these correspond with actual character growth. It just feels more meaningful.

Speaking of things that are meaningful, let's go see Joe next.

Hey, Hibiki. I forget, are you from Tokyo?
I'm an Earthling.
That sounds pretty epic. Are you going to be an astronaut? I've got a question for you.

Why?
Actually, I'm going to see my girlfriend, and I want to get her something to thank her.
What'd she do?

Here... Do you remember? We picked up souvenirs on the way from Osaka to Nagoya.
It's acts of kindness like that that make people happy, so I was thinking...
I should get something from Tokyo for my girlfriend in Nagoya...
Good idea.

Well... I'm going to go look anyway, even if I don't find anything.

It might get more difficult to get to see my girlfriend and give her things...
So, Mr. Tokyo, tell me a good Tokyo souvenir.
Wheat grass coffee.
I've never heard of that before! Sounds interesting.
All right, I'll get that. I can't go wrong with your recommendation!
I'll go look for it now... Wait.

Joe looks at his watch...

Running late?
Looks like. Normally she'd scold me, but these days she might get really worried...

Joe slowly walks away...

Well, now. This seems like an interesting event if only because Yamato's outside for a change.

...You. I didn't think I'd see you here.
It's not like you to be out.
Yes, it's been a long time since I was out in society.

...It seems to have been for naught, thought. I've been wasting my time.
Everyone is afraid, fleeing, waiting for danger to pass. ...Like small animals.

Hmph... What was I thinking? Someone like me... Hm?

A middle-aged man runs up to the two of you...

...Who are you?
We just made this! Would you like some? It tastes divine!

I don't have any customers, so I used the very last of my ingredients. It's my best work!
I do not need the hospitaility of the civilian population.
Just take it, already! Quit trying to be modest, kid! See ya!

The man forces a serving of takoyaki into Yamato's hand and leaves...

It's junk food.
"Junk food"... Conveniant and inexpensive. I have heard of such things.
In any case, I have no use for civilian foodstuffs.

Yamato glares down at the takoyaki with cold eyes...

Why aren't you eating it?
This? It's not exactly the most appetizing thing.

Yamato is indecisive...

Trust me, it's really good.
......
Very well. If you say so, I will try one, if only to broaden my horizons...

Yamato puts a piece of takoyaki in his mouth...

...Nothing but a civilian--
...?
...! Wh-What on Earth!?

[Music: Silence]

......
Well?

Yamato smiles slightly...

[Music: JPs -Geomagnetism Research Department-]

...You're a strange one, Hibiki.
You defy my predictions, you know this unknown world, and you constantly surprise me.
Heheh... I've never met anyone who so betrayed my expectations.

Yamato walks away...

[Music: Exploration]

See, this is what I mean by it being nice when these coincide with actual important stuff. Yamato ate some squid. Got a Fate level. Just seems so arbitrary and its a weird failing of the point system here.

It's still an improvement (over the original S.Link system from Persona 3/4), since there's at least some plot stuff mentioned in the scenes... sometimes.. but it still comes off as needing more finetuning.

Or something. Let's just go see Dera-Deka since he had a cunning plan for us.

H-Hey, kid... Haha... You came... Like you promised...

[Music: Elegy]

Dera-Deka appears to be seriously wounded...!

Are you all right?
What does it look like? I can't believe I messed up...
I used connections from my police days to get hold of a cell phone.

Maybe someone with no talent touched the summoning app...
The phone went berserk. A tone of demons came out, along with that really powerful one...
There was no way a lone man like me could fight them with my bare hands...
That's how I ended up like this... Nnngh!
Don't try to talk.
No... It's okay. Don't bother worrying about me.
Please, kid...! The demons... still out there... running wild...

And there's our optional... miniboss, I guess?

I'll do it.
Haha... Sorry. I knew you'd say that... I owe you one...!

[Music: Desperate Situation]

This map isn't too bad, and takes like a couple minutes at most to clear out.

It only has 3 enemy teams to contend with, and the miniboss is isolated. Picking a crack here was mildly difficult since both might have their uses but Hassohappa is more generally usable. Judgement is a Curse elemental spell that just halves a dude's HP. It might be useful sometime in the future, but I prefer Hassohappa. Admittedly I may be a tad biased.

The biggest problem here isn't really Jikokuten, oddly enough. He's got the Kishin's upgraded racial skill and seems like he can deal some real damage between an Amped Dyne and Hassohappa but he's really quite pathetic as our enemy.

For our first three turns, Dera-Deka has a quick line before we can move and stuff.

I'd say I feel sorry for this Aniel, but I'd be lying.

Kresnik's Multi-Strike actually looks unimpressive from the DPH, but the important part is how it is distributed above all else. It takes out the Silkies immediately, but that's not hard. It also leaves Aniel hurting enough that he gets wiped by a Fire Dance from Balor immediately afterwards.

Thanks to the movement penalty being decreased because of Kresnik, Hibiki actually gets his second turn immediately after this one.

This gives the opportunity to switch Kresnik out for Ym next. We can't Evil Flow because of this but there's no need to anyway.

After all, even the regular 2 attack range is more than enough to fight Jikokuten without fear of a counterattack.

[Music: Shudder]

Which is pretty saddening in a way. Jikokuten wishes he could pose even a meagre threat to us, but his weakness to Fire leaves him very dead immediately.

After all, Ym and Balor both have Fire Dance.

We just roasted one of the Four Heavenly Kings alive and there wasn't a drat thing he could do about it.

The sole remaining Aniel did get to move beforehand, but he couldn't get close enough to us to matter.

So we'll take him out and be done with this.

Man, this is without a weakness OR his Amp yet. Bifrons' Agidynes are going to reign firey hell very soon.

So, yeah. Not much to this one. We took all of like one hit, because I got a bit silly at the end. Didn't even really scratch our guys.

Compared to previous optional fights, this one is supremely underwhelming. It's not even an "it has to be easy because you gotta run Hibii solo!" thing. Jikokuten is just thrown out there so straight it's boring in a way.

[Music: In the Devastated Town]

Hey, kid... Can you do one last thing for me?
Okay.
Ha... haha. I'm sorry to keep asking things of you, but...

I don't want you to ever tell her... that I died... Okay?
To her... I died a year ago. I mean, think about it...

I promise, man-to-man.
Haha... Yes, a man-to-man promise... You get it.
I'm counting on you... to survive... for the world...

[Music: Silence]

I had a line ready for if I ever died on the job, but I forgot what it was...

[Music: Requiem]

You leave the area in respectful silence...

Goodbye, Dera-Deka...

:smith:

[Music: Exploration]

Small silver lining is that we can do what he wanted and use Jikokuten now. Gotta wait til, uh, level 57 but that's fine. We'll get there eventually.

Going to see Airi next seems like the most fitting thing to do, so we'll do that.

Oh...! Wh-What? You're here again?
What are you looking at?
Ugh... You're so annoying. What's with you?

Airi looks away...

...See that concert hall over there?

[Music: In the Devastated Town]

What competition?
...It was a piano competition. One run by the city.
But that was a long time ago. I don't do that... Not anymore. I quit.

It's funny, really... how much of a waste of time all that was.
Why did you give up?
Huh? Oh... It's more like I realized... there was no point in continuing.
A life of music costs a lot of money... Lessons, conservatories...

Anyway, who cares about stuff like playing the paino?
What Yamato said is more important. We need to think about his system and Polaris.

Oh, Makoto... Nothing, really.
I see. If you're just chatting, you should go somewhere else.
You shouldn't stay here long. There's a good chance of demons, and rioters, too.
Demons...? I-I'm fine. I can beat them.

I'm not saying you have to leave now, but... Please.
......

Makoto walks away.

This is Nagoya! I can go anywhere I want! She's so gung-ho about everything!
She's living her dream job, so she can be super pumped, but I don't care!

Airi walks away with a disgruntled look on her face...

[Music: Exploration]

For a rare change, Daichi managed to (by the skin of his teeth) accrue just enough votes to get a scene for once. And I do mean just enough. He was one vote off being doubled by Otome.

Hey, Hibiki. Can I ask you something?
What about?
Well... You're the only one I can talk to about this stuff.

[Music: In the Devastated Town]

...Of all the scenes to not get updated as the plot advances, this one sticks out quite a fair bit. We already know all this. The scar is the Void used by Polaris to end the world. But the scene isn't changed to reflect this for whatever reason.

And what can we do against somebody who can make that!?
Honestly... What do you think about it?
It's exciting.
R-Really!? I guess you're a lot more energetic than you look...

It's just the whole feeling I get... It's like... there's nothing we can do about it...

Hm...? Makoto? What's up?
Well... I came to check on you. I was worried about you.
You were?

[Music: Connected Hearts]

...You looked the most shocked when I showed you the black scar...
Perhaps it was just my imagination...
Well... It's shocking, but...

It's difficult to say.

N-No no no no! That's impossible! I mean...
A-Ask someone else to do it! I pass! I walk away!
......
Don't be so scared.

...I'm sorry. I know that we adults aren't as dependable as we should be.
Oh, uh...
Please, don't dwell on it too much. Goodbye.

Makoto walks away...

I mean, I'm just a high school kid! I should be scared! Right?
Yeah.

We can't do anything about that black scar...!
See ya, Hibiki. Thanks for listening... Hahaha...

Daichi walks away...

No, this isn't the result of putting the scene off or anything. Come 18:30 this event pops up and we're immediately railroaded into it. It's unavoidable like that.

So, let's save Io for real!

Yeah this coming map is the start of the point where the game no longer gives a gently caress about playing reasonable or fair. Crazier and crazier poo poo is going to be thrown at us and the game no longer has even the slightest sympathy for our pain.

So...essentially. "Bend the gently caress over player and prepare your anus. Or did you forget you were playing an Atlus game!?" That sort of thing?

Fun fact: if we got the takoyaki scene earlier, Yamato's feast from the previous day would be entirely comprised of takoyaki. :v:

I've never had takoyaki so I can't comment on it, but there are a few quips from the characters about how Yamato essentially had his top chefs use their finest ingredients to prepare food from the streets. :v:

You got Yamato to try something he wouldn't have done otherwise and broadened his tastes and opinions of his surroundings. If that's not worth a Fate level I'm not sure what would be for Yamato.

I dunno if I'd call Fate better than S.Links, mainly because it's so rushed. It just strikes me as odd that the characters would go through all this end-of-the-world drama and still have time to open up to the protagonist about work-life balance or scientific ethics. You've known the guy for less than a week! The world is literally crumbling around you!

It's probably also why the whole 'why are we fighting our friends?!' thing threw me off when I first played the game. The characters have literally just met...

No lie, first time I played through Devil Survivor 2, on the last day the only events I could do were Keita's Fate events. He started at Fate level 2 (because I didn't do any of his events after saving him because gently caress Keita), and, by the time I finished? He was up to Fate 4. In three events. :psyduck:

I concur. I definitely agree with some of the others feeling out of place. Really, some whole Fate lines seem bizarrely relaxed considering its the literally the end of the world. Jungo's is always the one that stuck out to me in that regard. Yamato's is pretty good though. Having him admit that anything from the civilian world is worth his attention is a pretty big step forward. And it crops up a time or two later, depending on how early you see this scene.

Jungo's oddly fits on account of it being Jungo, though. I mean, for him, it makes perfect sense to think of everybody as friends after a few days and to be singularly focused on his job as a short order chef chawanmushi maker and the health of an orphaned cat. He's like the purest juxtaposition of :downs: and :unsmith:.
