http://projectmgame.com/ For discussion of Nintendo's upcoming game for WiiU and 3DS, head over to the other thread. Project M is the newest mod for Smash Bros Brawl, and it's most extensive console-based mod in existence. Featuring new and redesigned characters, stages, costumes, modes, gameplay updates, character balance, engine enhancements, bugfixes, sleek presentation, esoteric references and a whole lotta' fanservice, the most talented members of the Brawl modding community (and even a few professional game developers) have spent thousands of hours creating and polishing an entirely new Smash game. As the name implies, Melee is the project's largest influence but purists beware, Project M combines the best of Melee, Brawl, and even Smash Bros N64, and is not afraid of radical changes. It's a game with a high skill ceiling, but is more accessible, rewarding, intuitive, fast-paced, goofier and more satisfying than ever before, items or not. What's best about all this is that you don't even need to jailbreak your Wii to play it. Project M exists solely on your SD card and makes no changes to your Wii, Brawl, or Brawl savegame. It is 100% guaranteed safe and will not void your Wii's warranty. What you'll need:
How to play:
I don't like competitive Smash: Then don't play competitively. Turn items on high, do four-player mushroom Mewtwo battles on Fourside, and you'll still appreciate the care put into balance. This mod aims to please all audiences, and everyone can find something to enjoy in raw content alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1ENNFkU1E8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws_D1JDiSXY General differences:
New modes: Now available every day of the week! Turbo Mode allows you to cancel any move with any other move so long as it connects. This includes jumping, shielding, ect. It's a hot sloppy mess, infinites everywhere and some characters can just button mash. Good stupid fun for the whole family. Selectable from the 'Special Brawl' menu. Additionally, a new item, the 'Turbo Ball' grants you Turbo Mode for a short amount of time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGs6YXNiWZY Crew Mode For those nights you have 10 friends over but only one Wii. This mode pits two teams against each other in a series of one on one battles where the stocks carry over. Toggleable in the 'Stock Control' tab on the options menu. Costumes: Now that we have the technology to add extra costumes without replacing old ones, the Project M Backroom has double down on 3D modellers and produce some really nice poo poo. They can even change projectiles and sound effects (eg: Doctor Mario's pill) Costumes include but are not limited to: Not pictured: Various recolors, Party hat Pikachu, Crowned Jigglypuff, Fairy Jigglypuff. The Smashball is not enough: If you hunger for even more costumes, stages, and music (Good Lord man, try to control yourself!) then you can download those from Brawlvault and Brawlcustommusic and hope it doesn't crash the game. It's as simple as replacing/adding files in the stages/fighter/songs folder of the SD card. If you're gluttonous and also lazy, there are people on Smashboards and Reddit uploading ready-to-go music packs and costume/stage expansions. Characters: (skip this section if you want to be surprised) These are all the characters so far, and they're all insanely good. Mario Removed the useless FLUDD and combined the best of Melee Mario with Dr. Mario; He even has a Doc costume! Very intuitive to play much like the Mario games themselves, and with his cape, mashing down-B spin-attack, and wall jump, his recovery is better than ever. Luigi Quirky and slippery, he may look like Mario but is entirely different. Now by holding side-B you can 'store' a supercharged misfire for later, and quickly tap side-B to rocket to safety, or your death! If there's one character to try wavedashing with it's Luigi, he slides forever. Princess Peach Not much new here, downsmash is really good. But hey how about that Shadow Queen costume? Bowser The walking fortress now has armor on a lot of his stronger moves, forward-smash is unbelievably devastating. Bowser's shell is so thick that he can crawl through light attacks and projectiles. Hold R until you leave the character select screen. You're welcome. Wario Ditches his bike for a running charge move from the Wario Land games. Wario's seen a major overhaul and is a lot truer to his platforming roots now. His quick aerial speed is helpful in grabbing that evasive Smash Ball, which you'll need if you want to reclaim Wario's bike. Yoshi Doesn't get a third jump, but has the best shield in the game. Side-B (Egg Roll) can be started and cancelled really quick. Very high risk-reward character like always. Donkey Kong Faster, stronger, better... not identifiably harder or easier. Donkey Kong get's that little boost he always needed to compete, his grabs and throws are excellent. His new dash-attack is the roll from the DKC games, and you can roll off ledges and jump just like on the SNES. Seriously why was this never in Smash proper?! Diddy Kong Still fundamentally the same, he represents the best and the worst ideas of Brawl: Cool stylish characters, and tripping. Pikachu An evolved Pichu; down-B still wins Free-for-Alls. Jigglypuff Perfectly mimmicking her Melee incarnation, Puff still dominates the air. Perfect for recovering, and pissing off your friends. Squirtle Feels like Luigi on a Slip n' Slide. New down-B: Bubble - trips the opponent. A lot of shenanigans with shell turnarounds being cancellable with smashes and grabs and poo poo. Idk just don't kill yourself with side-B. Ivysaur Hella' new moves such as:
Charizard Pretty easy beginner character. Lots of powerful attacks with large hitboxes. Up-B kills off the top.
Lucario This character be cray'! Basically he has a lot of moves that can be cancelled into each other in Marvel vs Capcom-like combo trees. Then as you deal damage, he builds meter (indicated by the glowing hands). When he has meter he can perform 'super' versions of all his special moves by pressing A+B. For example neutral-A+B is a giant creeping deathball, and up-A+B lets you jump out of the end of it for greater recovery. It's really cool and innovative for a Smash game but I don't even know where the gently caress to start. Mewtwo Hot drat that's a lot of Pokémon. Apparently this character took 700 hours to animate, so eat it up. Mewtwo can hover by holding jump, similar to Peach, but he can also float in any direction. It burns his second jump so use it wisely. Up-B Teleport also lets you attack at the end. Other general hitbox improvements make Mewtwo truly worthy of legendary status. Link Lot's of general improvements in the speed, damage, and comboability departments that make Link finally not suck. Toon Link A melting pot of ideas from Toon Link, Young Link, and even the orignal N64 Link makes the new Toon Link a unique character, with some familiarity to everyone. His recovery may seem weak, but with hookshot, wall jumps, and bomb jumps it's passable. Zelda Can shoot 3 side-B Dins Fireballs at a time, and direct them practically anywhere on the stage. Many moves have greatly increased KO power, and neutral-B (Nayru's Love) is annoying. Sheik It's Melee Sheik, minus the chaingrab. Instead she gets a crawl and a wall cling and can down-B transform into a better character. Ganondorf Such a useless character in Brawl. Ganondorf has been revived to Melee status and them some, with a side-B that sets up ground combos, suicide kills off the edge, and can grab the ledge easily. His new up-tilt is less of a joke too. Kirby The ladies' man of Smash returns with an up-B that can be aimed horizontally, a quicker down-B, and all new copy abilities. King DeDeDe Just a little faster, but remains true to his Brawl form. Can aim his Waddle Dees in any direction similar to Yoshi's Eggs. Also airdodging into the Waddle Dees causes a little boost that can help you recover, or just show off. Metaknight Mostly Brawl Metaknight but very toned down; it took a lot to make him fair. His new down-aerial is a downward dive-stab straight from the Kirby games. Fox ...only, no items, Final Destination. He's actually slightly nerfed but SHHH don't tell the Melee nuts! Falco Kinda the exception to the rule here. While Project M generally tries to 'declone' characters as much as possible, Falco is reverted to a Fox clone. They are essentially the Ryu and Ken of Melee, even more so than Mario and Luigi, and the Backroom wanted to preserve that. He can't throw his reflector anymore, but he has the easiest combo in the game: Down-B > immediately full jump > down-aerial > land > repeat Wolf Revamped to be a lot more technical like the other two Starfox reps. His laser is slow and menacing, use it to trap your opponents. His moves combo really easily and the side-B kills at the end and can be jumped out of afterwards only if it connects; If you feel daring, use it offstage. No matter what your skill level he's still a very satisfying character. Samus Oh man, where to begin?
Zero Suit Samus Very quick Captain Falcon-like character with a gun and a stun-whip. Down B can be used to recover and down-aerial auto-footstools for some reason. No jiggle physics, don't bring it up. Marth Everyone's favorite tiara-wearing prince is back in top Melee form with a few touch ups to his aerial game. A win for us, but a loss for C-sticks everywhere. Roy For those who don't remember, Roy's sword is strongest at the hilt, which winds up leaving him open for counterattacks far too often. Now he's been compensated with more damaging attacks, a deeper, controllable side-B (Double-Edge Dance), and some redesigned basic attacks that make him feel like less of a Marth clone. His down-B Counter is still the best in the game. Ike The deal here is that they took many of Ike's moves and either increased speed, or made them more optional. For example it takes an extra input to deal the second slash of down-smash. Ike's side-B can finish early by pressing A, finish automatically by holding B, pressing nothing does nothing and Ike just stops, and you can even jump or wall jump out of it. He's a heavy-hitter with a lot of options to mix things up. The middle of his sword is the strongest, but the tip is more damaging on shields; that's where it gets deep. Ness The little guy's been improved in almost every way. Faster aerials and specials, grab ranges upgraded from abysmal to decent so you can actually make use of his amazing throws, optional double jump-cancelling, hitbox on PSI Magnet, improved recovery, PK Fire that activates on shields; Ness's only glaring flaw is death by PK Thunder absorbtion. Lucas
Captain Falcon Falcon returns to his Melee supremacy. His electric knees are just as deadly, be prepared to be killed by a running jump attack from across the screen before you even see him coming. His side-B thankfully grabs the ledge now, and his Falcon Punch can turn around a hilarious four times before release. Ice Climbers So gosh darn complicated, but there's a ton of cool technical poo poo you can do to control both Climbers that I won't and can't get into. Basically Melee and Brawl tech is combined for greater tactics, but all infinite grab combos are eliminated. With a few beefed up moves and better partner AI, your only hope against a good Climber player is to not get grabbed. Pit One of the most obnoxiously evasive characters in Brawl. Project M give's Pit a makeover rewarding offense, and reducing his ability to avoid conflict. His Up-B has been replaced with an upward shield bash, and his side-B is now a glide that you can follow up with a jump or attack. Arrows can now be curved in any direction infinitely, allowing for some crazy loop-de-loop stunts, just try not to run off stage while maneuvering. Combined with revamped standard attacks, Pit feels right at home in his new fast-paced environment. Mr. Game & Watch Mr. Game was already centralized around an element of randomness, and now he's embraced it even more. Randomly occurring Giant Bacon(!) packs a bitter punch, and the side-B Judgement Hammer indicates whether the next random number will be even or odd, so there is more to consider when you gamble. With faster and larger attacks abound, Game & Watch has made the dimensional leap from an interesting character, to a great character. R.O.B. ROB's diverse moveset is rendered more useful by the addition of new up-B and aerial side-B. Inspired by Cave Story of all things, it's an airdash, you can attack out of it, it's interchangeable between side-B and up-B, and you have three of them before you need to recharge. Landing recharges all three, grabbing the ledge or being grabbed recharges one, and being hit gives you nothing. Use it wisely or end up offstage with no ride home. Olimar and Pikmin You get fewer Pikmin but they are stronger and more resistant to dying. The 'flowering' system makes them super good, as a reward for living longer and protecting your Pikmin. Whistle lacks armor but Pluck can be used as a hop to recover. Solid Snake He shanks! He smokes! He shoves shells and shoots his lovely tranquilizer shotgun... Okay it's not that bad, but I still miss the Nikita. Snake wins the award for most crap Nintendo would never pull in a first party title. A lot of Brawl's strategies carry over, with familiar traps and whole new options to explore. Snake's down-B C4 can be reliably used for early kills off the top, as it doesn't fall off unless the sticker or the stickee dies. The new tranquilizer gun shoot three darts before automatically reloading, or you can use the shoulder triggers to manually reload. While grabbing an opponent, use the D-pad to carry them left or right, and line up that perfect throw into a mine! This is just the tip of the iceberg for Snake, there is so much experimenting left to do. Sonic the Hedgehog In a fast-paced game like Melee it's no surprise that the fastest character has an edge. Sonic only needed a few dashes of power where it counts, and now he's good for more than just 'Race to the Finish'. The two Spindash moves are now more unique, and the side-B can be followed up with a somersault by pressing A. New retro-inspired moves like the Insta-Shield and the Sonic Eagle (from Sonic's fighting game debut, Sonic the Fighters) successfully combine fanservice with utility. Stages: http://projectmgame.com/en/stages/ By default we get a nice assortment of favorites from all three Smash games, and a few original stages as well. If you would prefer the original Brawl stages, or any downloadable stages, simply delete or replace: SD:/private/wii/app/RSBE/pf/stage/melee/ORIGINALSTAGENAMEHERE.pac Code of Conduct:

Nintendo Wifi Connection: Project M can be played online, but only with friends who also have the same version. Download the Project M 'wifi-safe' set (it makes a few control concessions for stability, but it's mostly the same) and add other goons' friend codes to play online. Project M and Brawl share the same friend code so please change your in-game status to indicate which game you're playing. Have fun and don't let the lag bring you down. Pixeltendo posted:Can you put custom music in this too? Absolutely! In fact there's a wonderful resource called Brawl Custom Music where you can find tons of music from hundreds of games that people have been nice enough to convert to the proper file type. Unfortunately I've had limited success making anything that sounds good on my own, so I can't offer advice there. http://www.brawlcustommusic.com/ I personally recommend the MvC3 dynamic character select screen for the Main Menu/Character Select song: http://www.brawlcustommusic.com/7979 How Rude posted:Can I use this online to play with friends over the internet who also have Project M? You can! There's "Wifi Enabled" versions of the game available in the downloads section on their site (which is currently experiencing ABSURD traffic since P:M 3.0 news is all over the loving place). Supposedly this disables analogue shielding, but is otherwise very playable. There's matters of lag since the Wii's wifi is pretty lovely, but yeah if you're comfortable with Brawl's online this is fine. e: I have people coming over in about two hours to shirk of Finals responsibilities and play P:M into the night. I hope they get their poo poo fixed by then, I'm so ready for 3.0! Roy, still my boy after all these years. Countblanc fucked around with this message at 00:54 on Dec 10, 2013 |

Convert whatever you want to .brstm format (I use Brawlbox for this, which can easily loop but only supports .wav, but there are other programs for .mp3s) and name it according to which song you want to replace. Ex: A01.brstm is Mushroomy Kingdom Ground Theme, A02.brstm is Mushroomy Kingdom Underground, ect. Here's a list of song titles and filenames. Orrrr, you can just download video game music off brawlcustommusic.com All custom songs go in the folder: SD:/projectm/pf/sound/strm/ F. Here's a couple gems that people might like Pokemon Trainer Battle from the Pokemon Origins mini series, obviously good for pokemon stages. A recreation of the E3 Smash 3DS/WiiU theme for meta main menu irony funtimes Kuma Kuma Circus! from Persona 4 Arena, because upbeat wacky music fits a bunch of Smash levels great Apollo Justice - A New Chapter of Trials from the new PW game. I like it for menus. Karate Man from Rhythm Heaven Fever. Slap this bad boy on the Wario Ware stage, annoy your friends!

My vague understanding of Riivolution was that it used to be necessary to use to prevent certain loading glitches/sound errors while running hacks but recent versions of the Gecko launcher are more efficient about it? I don't really know myself, this is just what I've gleamed secondhand reading other comments. Gecko is a lot cleaner/easier to use than Riivolution ever was in my opinion so I'm not too bothered by it. I've always just preferred normal Brawl with hacks to remove tripping over Project M's gameplay, but some of the poo poo they do in this is undoubtedly sick. You better believe I'm hype for Mewtwo and Roy. EDIT: Digging through the files now, y'all might be interested to know that they replaced Pit's original "Dark Pit" skin with one more true to his Uprising design! I wonder if they'd get into characters who were planned to be in some game or another but never appeared at all. I remember Sakurai mentioned that Sigurd from Fire Emblem was seriously considered for Melee before being replaced by Roy. The devs have talked about how they can only choose from models that are already in the game (Trophys, Assist Trophys, etc.) and are avoiding anything that is going into SSB4 so they don't step on toes and piss off Nintendo.

Riivolution was a homebrew code Loader and previous versions of the mod let you install it so you'd run the game directly from that. It's completely pointless though, with the Hackless Method just dump the files for the game into the root of an SD card, load the game with SD Card in the Wii/WiiU and go to the Stage Creator, the game will load the codes from there and you're done. That's it.

Some interesting notes while I dig through the character files: -Pikachu's party hat is back! I had this downloaded as a mod already but the P:M version looks better. -Mario has 12 skins total with the Dr. Mario skins added in, which is notable because previous character skin expansion hacks only allowed for up to 10 skins total. -Jigglypuff's crown is back and there's also a Fairy Jigglypuff -Ocarina of Time Link comes with 3 skins: Green, Blue and Red -There's a Blue Team Snake skin with arctic camo--might've been in previous P:M versions, I forget

My friends and I have a bunch of Franken-controllers where we take old/used 1st party controllers and salvage the good parts to put in 3rd party ones. I can't think of any otherwise solid 3rd party ones unfortunately. It's definitely cheaper to do our method with random poo poo from used game stores than it is to pony up for the White controllers, but drat they're sexy. Random patch note opinions: - Glad to see the Pit buffs - Even more glad to see the Ivysaur nerfs. Holy moly that character. - lol @ item balance changes, and also Lucario's final smash getting buffed - Wario nerfs seem unnecessary???? Especially removing his cancel on Shoulder Tackle without anything to compensate for it - Bowser continues being a character they don't know what to do with, now residing in some weird 2.5.5 state. I don't like the Fortress Hogging change but maybe it was a Problem at high levels. He still looks strong though so whatever. - Woo new snake move and taunt - Really cool of them to adjust the level blast zones - Toon Link love is nice, but I don't play the character so I couldn't say how much it helps - "Shine start-up animation has been improved" - Like the DK up-B change

Butt Town posted:Hahaha rest in pieces my fav dude, Bowser. He keeps getting worse and worse. Guess it's time to make the Samus switch! He got worse but I don't think he's trash right now. Getting his 2.5 fair back on sweet spot is cool. His running grab looked janky as gently caress in 2.6 but drat I'm gonna miss the utility. e: that said I've been half-maining Meta knight since 2.6 and I don't regret it. Hopefully one of the new characters clicks with me too, I'm looking at you, Roy and Yoshi. Countblanc fucked around with this message at 03:16 on Dec 10, 2013 |

We'll see how he turns out. Dry Bowser still owns.

Reiterpallasch posted:I've got some friends that want to play this on my wii, which means I need actual GCN controllers. Should I just pick up the first-parties, or are there third-party controllers which are a bit cheaper for a pack of 4 and of comparable quality? I don't really want to drop 140 on stuff just for smash, but if I have to... These work pretty well, I don't use them personally, but my local game store does and they last pretty well considering the amount of abuse they get.

Sire Oblivion posted:Wait, what's wrong with discussing getting this running on Dolphin? That's not against SA rules, right? I thought just the were off limits. Let's just make a conscious effort to stay in Nintendo's good graces. The guides are easy to find with Google, and if you really want you can ask about it in the Dolphin thread. Just earlier today Wired put up an article titled "The best Smash Bros game wasn't made by Nintendo". Flattering sure, but we're dealing with the company that wanted to shut down Let's Plays and Evo. I'm sure the sleeping giant would go after Project M in a heartbeat if provoked. And for what it's worth, 3rd party controllers will break in a week.

Nintendo's not the company to really worry about when it comes to lawsuits and cease-and-desist orders, but gently caress it. Currently downloading 3.0 at work and hoping to play tonight. By myself.
