Currently making my way through S1. I looked through the thread, but couldn't find what one of the pieces of "whimsical music" is, and it's been stuck in my head all day. Would somebody mind helping me out? Linked timestamp from S1E8

So, going through Season 2: I just started the Monopolizing Game. It's actually fun to see that there are "home editions" of some of the games here, and I wonder if they were inspired by their originals at all. Hap! Gyul! is available as a card game called SET, and the Monopolizing Game is actually a ridiculously fun party game called Pit which I highly recommend you pick up. Does anybody know of any other games that were lifted / inspired?

The international trailer was taken down sometime recently. I sent it to a friend two days ago and it worked fine then. Is something up with TVN? Also, I went ahead and bought Idiotape's album, 11111101. Really good if you're into electronic music.

While poking around the TVN website to see why the international trailer was taken down, I stumbled upon something else. It seems that the Korean TV channels all have a Facebook clone called "interest.me". http://my.interest.me/thegenius http://my.interest.me/thegenius2 There's some interesting stuff here. There's some journals from the production staff of the second season, which I can't read, but show off the original games for most of the main / death matches. All of our guesses were right. Seems that Food Chain / Layoff were also based off some board games. http://my.interest.me/thegenius2/25764102 There's also a pic of the Season 1 set taken from above. TV magic is excellent.

Ah, here's why the trailer was taken down. I think? It seems that at a recent NATPE event, the rights were sold, or licensed, and there's going to be a Netherlands version of The Genius. http://program.interest.me/tvn/thegenius2/21/Board/View?b_seq=47 (Google Translate) So here's two more sites to poke around: http://program.interest.me/tvn/thegenius http://program.interest.me/tvn/thegenius2 There's plenty of data to mine through in these four. EDIT: lol an internet petition to cancel the show after Doohee got hosed with. Suspicious Dish fucked around with this message at 18:23 on Apr 6, 2014 |

When did Hongchul organize the broadcaster alliance? I don't remember that.

Do you have any reference for that? I watched all the BTS clips and all the episodes and I genuinely don't remember him mentioning that at all.

Shakugan posted:Not on hand, it was the translation of some korean news site that I can't remember the name of. As for him not mentioning it, people on reality tv shows pretty much never mention organising alliances before the game starts. The shows producers certainly never want to show them saying this or acknowledging it. Nice!

Thanks for the excellent spoiler tag, Symbolic Butt. It totally hid that spoiler text. (I actually have been waiting to watch this show together with a friend tonight, so I'm trying to keep down on spoilers. I probably should just stop reading the thread)

I was going to watch it with a friend but she wanted to binge through The Genius first. I will still hover over every black bar and ogle at the spoilers like an idiot though. I don't care if you put them in plain sight. I have no idea what you're talking about, actually.

Capsaicin posted:Season 1 Episode 2: Watch until the end. They explain it well. Capsaicin posted:Also, what exactly is Sangmin famous for? I looked him up on wikipedia, but all I could find is a group, not him himself. He was the lead musician and producer behind Roo'ra. He had a restaurant for a while, and that failed. He's a stock character for a lot of Korean TV. Here he is on some random cooking show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eZGHGnHp0w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEcwgONvDPA So yeah, he's a popular dude.

Go back and watch it. The producers were clever. The girl shuffles in a very odd manner to not flip backs of the cards around. He was clever enough to notice and then take advantage of it. It's a really sneaky move.

Capsaicin posted:I really get the feeling that there are a lot of things the producers put in just hoping Correct. And then it all just falls down in S2. alkanphel posted:I really like that episode because it was the one where most of them alienated him but he still came back with a solo victory, showing his genius, literally. It's the episode I was convinced Jinho was a genius. He's sort of bumbled along the sidelines with some truly weak victories and tremendous losses for a bit, but he just came back and won everyone over.

The reason he was voted off was because he was trying too hard to win and was generally a duck. I'm glad he's gone.

We do know that S3 is airing sometime in August, according to a press release from CJE&M. Additionally, we have this: http://program.interest.me/tvn/thegenius3 quote:5월15일부터6월13일까지진행된 quote:May 15-June 13 advanced

I made it past all the introductions, which went well into the second half of the episode, and then they brought in their special guest dude and I lost interest. If it gets better after that, I'll give it a second look.

It's the set of puzzles they asked potential candidates. See if you can do the first two: what's the number in the middle, and what's the missing number? The other two would take me more time to translate. All of them are open-ended.

It's open-ended, and the producers care about your thought process than getting the correct answer. You can see other people's thoughts at the bottom of this page: http://my.interest.me/content/16708034?folderId=31297995

When you produce the actual episodes, would you mind making a thread in TGR just to post those that I can subscribe to? I don't want to follow everything live, but reading the episode synopsis sounds nice.

Oh. I was imagining after the game was done, they'd edit it into a post and put it in a thread somewhere. At which point, it would be nice for players to see the "broadcast".

The best part of S1 was the "it's just a dumb TV show" attitude. S2 was really competitive, and it was just unsatisfying. While this episode isn't as friendly as S1 as I would have hoped, it's certainly a big step forward over S2. Dongmin and Kyunghoon are respectable. Otherwise, I'm a racist gently caress who can't tell the rest apart yet.

They didn't really use Extreme Ways in Season 1 or Season 2's episode 1 as well. They used some lovely dubstep song there as well (Skrillex's Bangarang for Season 1, Knife Party's Power Glove in Season 2). It will come back. They gotta give it a reveal worth it. There was still plenty of Dexter and Ocean's 11 / Ocean's 12.

Gonna say that I didn't really like the deathmatch at all. There was way too much information and the opponents were always a few points off another -- you could accurately guess who did what, and the black vs. white distinction was useless. Also, one of the big things I always liked about this show is how physical a lot of the props are (e.g. actually giving out cards instead of just saying numbers, moving giant chess pieces with mirrors and firing a laser instead of just doing it in your head), and having an iPad stuck in a podium felt cheap. There was a lot more you could pick up on in Black and White I based on which piece you chose, how you went for it, how slowly or fast you put it on the slot, etc. Here, you just seemed to have which odd way you drew your numbers. It didn't feel right.

I assume it was intended to be similar to the tickets in Abundance and Famine, which was really successful for pulling off a successful alliance when they traded around at random and bonded together.
