Anybody have any recommendations for a dashcam that can operate reliably in unbelievable cold? I'm talking temperatures of around -40*C (coincidentally -40*F) Would be nice to get one but with how low the temperatures get around here I'm thinking I'll have trouble finding one that'll be ok with it.

You'll have to shop for something 'industrial'. Most electronic components that are rated for a commercial temperature range are something like 0C up to 85C. Industrial / extended temp components are -45C to 85C or possibly 125C. Automotive-graded components (like capacitors) are usually -45/40C to 85C rated.

I'd assume cut-rate devices coming out of Asia aren't using X7R/similar high stability / temperature compensated caps so they will probably suffer badly at low temps (likely due to brown outs from caps not operating correctly).

Looks like I've got some searching to do. If I can't find anything I guess I'll just go with STR's suggestion and take it inside with me when it gets really cold.

Do they not require a license to drive in Russia?

They do, but you can buy your license for the equivalent of $20 US from what I hear. I guess it explains the complete lack of skill that some drivers display, as beautifully captured by these dashcam videos.

This popped up on facebook this morning, dashcam footage of a t-bone crash.

Article:

Video from the article:

Looks like the guy pulling the trailer was talking on a cellphone as he pulled out, both drivers are lucky to be alive.

Finally hooked up the dashcam and caught these two morons, globally. G1W footage:

Thought maybe this guy was just going to split lanes and go straight, but it looks like he decided to make his own turning lane.

Was definitely going a bit fast for the conditions but he recovered it so no crash footage to be had.

That's one of the biggest pet peeves I have with the g1w, the mount is such a pain in the rear end to mount and unmount the cam. Maybe the aftermarket ones are better, but the one that comes with the camera is terrible for easy removal.

Yay for idiots with no situational awareness and the "I'm the most important thing on the road" mentality.
