ltr posted:The second one, they knew exactly what they were doing, watch their brake lights as they come to the red light. My only guess is that their car is so slow they can't stop or it will never get going again. After waiting, I followed them onto the freeway where I blew past them about 1/2 mile later. I have never understood the frequency of red-light running you guys in the US seem to have to deal with. I think I've witnessed it under a handful of times here, and half of those seemed to not be malicious. I can't even fathom why you would run a red light like that. I wouldn't even do it in the middle of the winter. On the other hand, I gladly do it on my bicycle... (within reason, of course.)

Hey, dashcam thread, I'm toying with the idea of hardwiring my GPS plus getting a Mobius, and hardwiring that as well. What does everybody use as a 12V->5V converter? I'm thinking one or two of these: Also, how long can USB cables be before there's a voltage drop that becomes a problem?

Not my video (but a place I've driven a bazillion times) and kinda the same scenario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VpAY9yGaZw I wonder if everybody wouldn't just be better off if the tailgater stayed the course, braked hard, and let the ABS and the insurance companies sort out the rest. I can totally see the "anything but hitting another car" mindset in the situation though. A few good, solid, hard stops from speed would do a lot of drivers good, I think. I wouldn't be surprised if the average driver had no clue how hard you actually can brake in good conditions.

gently caress, that looks hilariously dumb. Bright daylight, light traffic, full size truck trailer... do you think your video will be used for anything?

Goddamn! That got out of hand fast. Poor truck driver. He manages to hit the brakes briefly but then it seems like he's knocked out or something. It would be pretty interesting if we could relive an accident like this in a simulator, like for airplanes. I wonder how I'd fare behind the wheel. I'd like to think a lot better

That could've gone a lot worse, had the Merc idled autonomously onto the freeway. I'm going to assign 2/3rds blame to Mercjerk and 1/3 blame to Camguy McHonkyson.

Why does it take the fuckers with the ringside seats fifteen whole seconds to do anything? That can't possibly have been a quiet event from that vantage point.

My comment was a bit flippant, I must admit, and you're all right. I have personally only ever had to react quickly to a few minor accidents (guy endoing and face planting on his bike, dude over correcting at a track day and running into the armco) and I'd like to think that I reacted promptly and reasonably correctly in all situations, but it's something that I've sorta had to teach myself, and probably also a bit of leftovers from my civil defense service (think military service light, centered around fire fighting and EMS) around the turn of the millennium. I get that, on average, this is how it's going to be, but I also would like to promote that everyone at least read up on basic first aid and accident response. Edit: Oh yeah, and there was the time when someone's MR2 decided to cremate itself on the far end of the track. At a track day too, can't remember if it was the same one as the armco kisser. bolind fucked around with this message at 10:33 on Jul 19, 2016 |

Shock is a hell of a thing. I think there's also a nonzero element of not wanting to look like a fool by overreacting. Kinda like your first response when you have a minor crash on your bicycle is to check whether anyone saw.

Points deducted for following too close and not paying attention, but points awarded for keeping the shiny side up and not hitting anything/anyone. Hopefully the very puckered rear end in a top hat for the next three days served as a lesson.
