A crossbow is very useful for taking out stray zombies (and quietly killing players). You can make one with sticks and plant fiber (punch grass>>put grass item on craft table==plant fiber).

Crossbow bolts are made with feathers (bird nests and zombies), sticks, and small rocks (pick up a rock off the ground, turn it into a rock block, then turn the rock block into small rocks).

You can see the shape each crafting recipe will take by clicking its name in the "i" screen. If the name is green you've made it before and it will automatically set up the ingredients for you. If it's white, you can craft it but you'll have to figure out the arrangement manually. If it's not in the list you can't make it with your current items.
