My favourite boomrat experience recently was one randomly joining my colony, then a colonist committing suicide by slaughter mental break. Surprised the hell out of me when suddenly everything was on fired.

Just create an area covering your crops and other areas you don't want them, invert it and apply to your animals? Seems to work fine for me and they go forage everywhere else.
