For anyone who hasn't seen it or know about it, check out the movie Beyond the Black Rainbow. The story with this movie, as I understand it, is the director grew up in the 1980's and was in video stores a lot, but was not allowed to rent or watch any R-rated horror or sci-fi movies. But he was infatuated with the box art. Since he couldn't watch any of the movies until he was older, he often imagined what the movies were like based on the artwork. Beyond the Black Rainbow is a combination of two of his different film ideas based on this 1980's box art.

I'm glad the bulk of this genre is vocal-free. In nine out of ten songs that would otherwise be good (for any given genre) it's because the vocals or the lyrics are cheesy/lovely, imo. Leaving them out means more awesome music to enjoy.

Too many artists are trying to straight up emulate 80s electronic movie soundtracks it seems to me, instead of offering a completely original sound. Like others have said there are some that stand out but a lot is amateurish sounding crap

The recent anime series Jojo's bizarre adventure is a faithful adaption of a classic seminal boy's action series that started in the mid-80's - every character in the series is named after some kind of pop tune, pop star, or pop lyric, and the series has a decidedly pop music influenced vibe to it all. (In fact, "Jojo" comes from the Beatles song "Get back.")

Anyway - the show has been trying to go for a retro 80's anime look and vibe, as the original comic itself was heavily influenced by New Wave fashion. This extends to both the music and the art style. The soundtrack for the series is fantastic and expansive - and a good deal of the music falls into the category of new retro wave.

That TEEL track is exactly my poo poo! And the first half of the Kuedo song is also pretty nice. The harmony is almost crooked, but only almost. Nice touch.
