Tias posted:What was the whole brouhaha about Tebow again? I can't recall (dirty foreigner here), and wikipedia only mentions something about participating in a pro-life advert, which was criticised by private pro-choice groups. It hardly seems like the stalinist berufsverbot of utter doom these turds are making it out to be. Think about the Jesus-ist guy you know. Multiply it by 10. I'll give a little more context since you're maybe not as familiar with the really deep-level reporting: Rookies who hope to be drafted go to the Scouting Combine. This is a several-day process where these guys are measured to the 1/4" of height, .01 of a second running a 40-yard dash, 1/2" in vertical leap, etc. There's also an intelligence test called the Wonderlic that everyone is supposed to take. It's 50 questions in 15 minutes so nobody is expected to actually ace the thing, but it's a source of stress for a lot of the players. The results are allegedly "private" but they always leak out to the press. When Tebow entered the league, he requested that he be allowed to say a prayer aloud for everyone in his group before taking the test. The story is that when he did so, at least three players in the room with him told him to just shut the gently caress up because they were so sick of his shtick.

No one really had a problem with Tebow being a Christian. 99% of post-game interviews are just people thanking Jesus for giving them the strength to win. People hated Tebow because he's a terrible football player.

The reason not to call Ann Coulter a man is because she's not one. She's a horrifically hateful Republican troll, sure, but she's in no way a man or a transgender woman. Calling her names is as reasonable as calling Obama a Muslim socialist nazi. Attack Coulter for her views and actions, not physical traits real or imagined.

Thing is, Tim is a genuinely nice if completely naive and sheltered guy (home schooled by fundies). He was a fantastic athlete in college and without a doubt the best football player for about two years in BCS football (college) winning the Heisman trophy (award given out to the best football player in the country). He hit the Jesus notes hard, but he was programmed to do so. He was never hateful (that I saw), and tried to be positive with his religion. It was a little tedious but not horrible. Problem was the college football game is a lot different from the pro-football game because in college you can get by on being a fantastic athlete if the scheme the team runs is tailored to it. In pro football everyone is a fantastic athlete and Tim didn't have the necessary skills or knowledge how to run a pro offense so when he went to the NFL (and was drafted in the first round, which should have never happened) expectations among his legions of fans were that he was going to dominate because hey, he'd always dominated. Unfortunately for him that turned out not to be the case and he bombed pretty badly, bounced around the league for three or four years from team to team, dragging a media circus behind him everywhere he went and finally couldn't find anyone to sign him. For people who like and know about football its obvious that this was because of his skill set and not because of his religion, hell more than half the league including coaches and players is probably just as religious as Tim (if less demonstrative) and hardcore Christian athletes succeed constantly in the NFL, but to his devoted fans, who are Tim Tebow fans and not really football fans it was an obvious betrayal by the liberal media who kept hounding him (to be fair, they did) until he was driven from the league for his beliefs. He's now a football analyst for the SEC network I think and from all accounts he's pretty good at it so good on him.

Anecdotal, but most of the people I know who act like Tebow is the only Christian in the NFL don't seem to have a problem mocking black players for thanking Jesus when they when a game.

The difference being that when Tebow would win the media was fine and dandy with him being the QB, but pointed out that he creates a media circus. Once he didn't have the best team in the league around him to catch his floaters and keep the game close so he could have one amazing drive to "win" the game, the media "turned on him" by pointing out that he's a subpar NFL quarterback and that he creates a media circus. For a good chuckle look up "longest sack ever" on YouTube and see how well his skills transferred to the NFL.
