I've been reading these last few posts in Gene's voice from Bob's Burgers, like when he shouts something in response to someone else. It helps. Merry Christmas, everyone.

Remember when you pulled down his pants looking for that lizardman tail?" [Chanting] "Birth certificate! Birth certificate! Birth certificate!" "No, Gene. We're going to cater the DNC meeting this year and we're just going to be a normal family. No lizardman Acorn conspiracies." [Whispering] "birth certificate! Birth certificate! Birth certificate!" [Shouting] "Merry Christmas!"

Pander posted:There are stories, I'm not sure if they're apocryphal or not, about how during her tours of NC prison camps, American POWs tried to slip her paper with information to bring to the US military and she immediately turned it over to the NC guards. Those stories are not true. Fonda did in fact keep messages given to her by captured Air Force pilots and gave them to the soldiers' families after she returned to the US. But she also said for years afterward that because the pilots she met were not tortured, that means that all the returning pilots who said they were tortured were lying. Which is beyond lovely and really unconscionable. John McCain was known back then as a survivor of torture: all she had to do was ask for a high-five. She also said that she was tricked into posing on the antiaircraft gun and that her talking on the radio wasn't a big deal because she was just describing what she saw. So she is a lovely idiot, but calling her a traitor while jerking off about the losing side in the US Civil War and writing Turner Diaries fanfiction on the internet is kind of hypocritical.

There was a former libertarian in D&D who explained the mindset pretty well--basically anyone who does anything bad is the government. He said that at some point a crazy guy broke into his apartment and stole his tv and he blamed the government because that guy was stealing from him and abridging his freedom just like the government does. I'm not doing a great job of explaining it, but the whole thing boiled down to the idea that for him "the government" was a belief system or set of behaviors rather than a single institution. He would be mad at people or businesses for "doing what the government would do," which was anything bad.

Twelve by Pies posted:Most of Freep loves old Star Trek because Kirk was always interfering with other cultures and basically saying "I don't give a poo poo what the regulations say" and was always shooting the bad guys. It's TNG where most of them start to fall away from it as being "ruined" by liberals. I can remember my racist dad complaining about the Deep Space 9 episode where they go back in time to a 21-century debtors' prison because it was trying to make black people look sympathetic--and he loved old Star Trek and got me to watch it. I was like 12 and that was the last time I ever watched television with him. This memory has made me realize that if he were computer literate, he would be a freeper.

Is this obsession with race war like a boomer-and-up thing? I've never heard of it outside of racists on the internet. Is it for people old enough to remember race riots from the 60s who think that everyone who is a certain color is part of a secret club?

Lots of anti-Clinton black helicopter and UN stormtrooper fear. Drudge actually linked to them a bunch when Clinton was getting impeached. Probably also a lot of militia support for true patriots like Tim McVeigh. According to wiki, the first accusations of RINO were actually directed at George W Bush, before the familiar about-face embrace of him as America's savior once he won the republican nomination: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Republic#1996.E2.80.932000:_Clinton_Administration EDIT: lol: quote:Drudge dropped the link to Free Republic by February 1999, "because they were doing racist stuff over the (imaginary) [Clinton love child]... I click on and I see this headline, 'friend of the family Baby.'" Drudge quickly restored the link, but later dropped it again for unknown reasons.[13] As of April 2008 the Free Republic link is back on Drudge.[14]

Zeroisanumber posted:The article is actually better than the thread. I forget how much space the National Review devotes to whining about cultural change and how scary that is to some old people. What's really shocking is that it's from 1992. Yet they treat it like breaking news. It serves a purely ritual function, both for the National Review and the freepers. The old days have always been better. The homosexuals and the communists have always been a danger. The message never changes and the world is always getting worse. How much do you think most freepers' lives have changed in the last 23 years?

Shot five times while drawing his own weapon, Dan was instantly paralyzed and left for dead. In the end, his funniest joke was walking around with a gun all the time thinking it would keep him safe. He does get mad props from me for admitting that what he did was stupid, and for calling himself a former stand-up comedian at the start of every post-shooting show.

How many mormons stay past the age of 30 or so? I remember a contributor to This American Life and the Moth named Elna Baker, whose thing was that she was a mormon comedian going to art school in New York whose experiences challenged her faith, but she dropped all that like a year later and bugged out because no rational adult can take much of it seriously. It seems like all that poo poo with people becoming elders at 20 is like what the soviets did with giving everyone medals all the time. It has to wear off at some point. Do they know about mitochondrial dna testing?

They rolled with creationism 10 years ago and they'll roll with this. The true believers in the issue get buried and the party loyalists march on once they convince themselves that gay marriage was always a conservative value. The new magic words: "freedom to marry is the right of the individual. Privatize marriage licenses now!" Freepers may be getting left behind, but the conservative leadership has been dropping religious crazies for young internet libertarians for a while. Expect the next freep 50 years from now to involve gamergate flags and Mencius Moldbug poetry, posted by people who can barely work the hyper-internet.
