There are stories, I'm not sure if they're apocryphal or not, about how during her tours of NC prison camps, American POWs tried to slip her paper with information to bring to the US military and she immediately turned it over to the NC guards.

Those stories are not true. Fonda did in fact keep messages given to her by captured Air Force pilots and gave them to the soldiers' families after she returned to the US. But she also said for years afterward that because the pilots she met were not tortured, that means that all the returning pilots who said they were tortured were lying. Which is beyond lovely and really unconscionable. John McCain was known back then as a survivor of torture: all she had to do was ask for a high-five.

She also said that she was tricked into posing on the antiaircraft gun and that her talking on the radio wasn't a big deal because she was just describing what she saw. So she is a lovely idiot, but calling her a traitor while jerking off about the losing side in the US Civil War and writing Turner Diaries fanfiction on the internet is kind of hypocritical.

There was a former libertarian in D&D who explained the mindset pretty well--basically anyone who does anything bad is the government. He said that at some point a crazy guy broke into his apartment and stole his tv and he blamed the government because that guy was stealing from him and abridging his freedom just like the government does.

I'm not doing a great job of explaining it, but the whole thing boiled down to the idea that for him "the government" was a belief system or set of behaviors rather than a single institution. He would be mad at people or businesses for "doing what the government would do," which was anything bad.

EDIT: Yep:

Plan for Abbie Boudreau (2010)

In August 2010, O'Keefe planned a staged encounter with the CNN correspondent Abbie Boudreau, who was doing a documentary on the young conservative movement. He set up an appointment at his office in Maryland to discuss a video shoot.[1] Izzy Santa, executive director of Project Veritas, warned Boudreau that O'Keefe was planning to "punk" her on the boat by trying to seduce her—which he would film on hidden cameras.[1][74] Boudreau did not board the boat and soon left the area.[1][74]

CNN later published a 13–page plan written by O'Keefe's mentor Ben Wetmore.[75] It listed props for the boat scheme, including pornography, sexual aids, condoms, a blindfold and "fuzzy" handcuffs.[1][74][76] When questioned by CNN, O'Keefe denied that he was going to follow the Wetmore plan, as he found parts of it inappropriate.[74] Boudreau commented "that does not appear to be true, according to a series of emails we obtained from Izzy Santa, who says the e-mails reveal James' true intentions."[77]

Following the Boudreau incident, Project Veritas paid Izzy Santa a five-figure settlement which included a nondisclosure agreement.[78] Funding decreased from conservative political organizations following this CNN incident.[78]

I guess he tried to play it off like it was one of his gonzo journalism schemes instead of

Lots of anti-Clinton black helicopter and UN stormtrooper fear. Drudge actually linked to them a bunch when Clinton was getting impeached. Probably also a lot of militia support for true patriots like Tim McVeigh. According to wiki, the first accusations of RINO were actually directed at George W Bush, before the familiar about-face embrace of him as America's savior once he won the republican nomination:

Drudge dropped the link to Free Republic by February 1999, "because they were doing racist stuff over the (imaginary) [Clinton love child]... I click on and I see this headline, 'friend of the family Baby.'" Drudge quickly restored the link, but later dropped it again for unknown reasons.[13] As of April 2008 the Free Republic link is back on Drudge.[14]

White House Press Secretary and former Fox News commentator Tony Snow was a registered member of Free Republic. Snow was not afraid to 'mix it up' with the Freepers who sometimes disagreed with his political philosophy and who called him a "pansy".[19]

Free Republic had been criticized during the pre-moderation period for the actions of several of its members. In 1999, FReepers ran a campaign to make fake donations to the legal defense fund of Julie Hiatt Steele, who had been charged with obstruction of justice during then-President Bill Clinton's impeachment trial. Hundreds of fraudulent[20] transactions from this campaign cost Ms. Steele around $4000.[21] Some threatened to assassinate Clinton, like this from February 2001: "If he keeps on he's going to make me come up there. There is only one solution to the Klintons, two 45 rounds and a nice little spot in Marcy Park." [22]

When the bar manager of an Austin, Texas restaurant called 9-1-1 to notify authorities that an underage Jenna Bush had attempted to purchase liquor in June 2001, the bar manager's personal information including her home address, date of birth, driver's license number and physical description was posted on FreeRepublic, along with calls for punitive action.[23] The Clinton threat and some of the bar manager's personal information were removed by Robinson when brought to his attention, and the authors' posting privileges were revoked. He said that the site had had to "delete relatively few posts" over time for violations of its "no-violence" policy despite Free Republic's popularity and ease of registration.[24] [25]

On November 20th, 2005 Brendan (Dan) McKown’s life was irrevocably changed when he attempted to stop a gunman’s rampage in the Tacoma Mall. Shot five times while drawing his own weapon, Dan was instantly paralyzed and left for dead.

It was said that the shooter had 600 rounds of ammunition that he had intended to use on his rampage. But, after looking down the barrel of someone else’s gun; he changed his plans, went on the defensive (taking several hostages) and after a brief stand-off: Ultimately surrendered.

Dan McKown lay on the floor of Kits Camera over an hour before he could receive medical attention and spent many more in surgery. If not for the quick efforts of Crystal Tyler and Moses Martinez; Dan’s wounds might have been too much for his surgeons. With between 30 and 40 people waiting in the Emergency and then Intensive Care wards Dan had a lot of prayers and support. After his surgeries he had a steady stream of visitors keeping his spirits up, not least of which was the friends he had made in the comedy community.

At the behest of Ty Barnett; Kris Brannon & Susan Jones organized a benefit concert hosted by Travis Simmons that showcased no less than 30 comedians and raised several thousand dollars. Now, a little more than six months later & after hundreds of hours of physical therapy: Dan has regained use of his right leg and can walk short distances in a walker or crutches.

He has since returned to his writing and has been asked to tell his story as a guest and occasionally a motivational speaker.

Credited with stopping the rampage and his shooter sentenced to over 160 years, Dan has been invited to participate in local government. Dan has been appointed to the city of Tacoma's Human Rights Commission as well as begining to help with the Cops & Docs program. He is also working on writing as well as working with his Troupe: Comedy Kaleidoscope.

Dan has been called a Hero, a Victim, an inspiration and a symbol for
and against Gun Control, but what ever you call him; He will (with the help

of God, his family, friends, his Physicians and therapists) push forward.

In the end, his funniest joke was walking around with a gun all the time thinking it would keep him safe. He does get mad props from me for admitting that what he did was stupid, and for calling himself a former stand-up comedian at the start of every post-shooting show.

The true believers in the issue get buried and the party loyalists march on once they convince themselves that gay marriage was always a conservative value. The new magic words: "freedom to marry is the right of the individual. Privatize marriage licenses now!" Freepers may be getting left behind, but the conservative leadership has been dropping religious crazies for young internet libertarians for a while.
