The difference is that we, or I at least, take those stories for what they are : anecdotes. Things that probably happened to some people but we don't generalise from that and say all anti-abortionists have secret abortions. It's an interesting tidbit granting an insight into a terribly absurd state of mind. However we know (hopefully) that the plural of "anecdote" is not data.

Wow you're either trolling or missing the point real hard melkor. The whole point is that we accept those as anecdotes and not as a representation of pro-lifers as a whole while freep takes the welfare Queen anecdotes to justify their point that all blacks are bad and so is welfare. Sure who knows if they are true, some of them probably  , point is they represent a certain mindset that does exists (as shown by the data the essay helpfully includes). No one ever said that this applies to pro-lifers in general and if they did that would be an unjust usage of the anecdotes.

I don't really agree with you point since a fertilised egg has a brand new genome and thus is a new individual while the DNA in your poop is just a part of you that fell off. While I am pro-choice, I do get the idea behind "life starts at conception". Life starts at "gametogenesis" however is just as dumb as "life starts at pooping", I agree.

The tumor genome is p much just the same as yours plus minus a couple of mutations while the genome of a conceptus created by sexual reproduction differs much more from the genome of the parents (well except if you're into twincest I guess  )Chimerism leads to the development of a single organism so one vote I guess. As I said before, I don't think people saying this are right, it's just that I can understand where they are coming from and it's not quite as dumb as turd-as-an-individual.

I've amended the definition mostly because I've not defined it properly to start with. In our multicellular bodies, there are a lot of slightly differing genomes because DNA replication is not perfect, DNA polymerases make mistakes and point mutations appear. However the genome remains similar enough to yours that the differences are mostly negligible and that your own body recognises these cells as "self". A conceptus inheriting half his genome from each parent is not recognised as self by either of the parents. You can't just equate that with "a couple of mutations here and there". It is a much more fundamental departure from the source material. Now I agree that twins seem to pose a problem with regards to this definition, but they will just form 2 distinct conceptuses that while identical, both differ significantly from the source material, thus being new individuals according to this definition. They are kind of an exception to the rule though yes. Then again all this doesn't matter since it is indeed a consciousness devoid cell clump at this state and for quite some time and imo should not be given priority over the already developed and thinking parents.

Cloning and stuff like asexual reproduction breaks the definition but since that's doesn't concern human (yet), I've not taken it into account here. But yes,  , cloning presents a huge issue with regards to this argument (as well as many other societal and ethical considerations anyways) .
