All three Gjaum jump to attack, and all three claw strikes land. on the neck, the back, and the forehead. On the points of contact, however, a black aura shows itelf, taking the partial shape of what looks like a werewolf, guarding George from the strikes. As the form disperses, the monsters are repelled.

As George looks around at the devastation around, he gets even more irritated.

As he hurriedly looks for the stairwell up, he can hear a radio...no, a communication! Coming from Mr. Lande's ear! Who is Ex Machina, and why is he mentioning his father by name? As he stands up, he hisses towards him. "I knew you weren't a day trader, Bishop. Out of my way!" He shoves him aside and runs for the interior stairwell...and as he does so, unconsciously starts Warding. The tannoy speakers crackle to life with a boilerplate emergency message, heard during fire drills at the music academy a hundred times:

"Attention, attention, there is an emergency situation. Please quickly and calmly head for the emergency exits at this time. This is a *bzzt* Attention, attention..."

Robin dodges and weaves his way to the stairs, and unlike everybody else, heads up.

Someone wants him dead and I don't know why, but I have no intention whatsoever of letting that happen!"

Conrad slams through the wall to the next floor up, deliberately leaving Robin outside. Keep the kid out of it. "The package is being stolen, I repeat, the package is being stolen- simultaneous play by unknown enemies! In pursuit!"

Either way, he was not going to just stand there as his father is snatched off by who knows what!

He shoulder-charges the door to the next floor--an utterly unnecessary move, because it wasn't even locked--and hears Bishop yelling about a stolen package. Bishop may be able to walk through walls, but Robin is much faster, and he's soon running, arms flailing, towards the source of the noise.

"When a man thinketh on anything whatsoever, his next thought after is not altogether so casual as it seems to be. Not every thought to every thought succeeds indifferently."
- Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan
Scene 1

It was no use. Robin was fast, but the bat was much faster, and it wasn't playing fair, smashing through the ceilings as it was. it covered several floors in mere seconds and was ready to make its getaway when...

"Not without my permission!"

The entire hotel flared with light for a moment, dust particles turning into tiny luminescent balls before settling down. "Perimeter isolated! It's not going to find it that easy to get out!" Satsuki Kamishiro's voice rang out loud and clear. "Get it before it manages to break through! A Domain this big is very unstable...urgh!" She bit down a grunt of pain as the bat smashed against the ceiling again. Keeping the structure reinforced was taking its toll on her.

With their respectively high speeds and terrain bypasses, Robin and Conrad managed to reach the top floor quickly. Mr. Perlbell had fallen unconscious from all the havoc, and the bat had placed it in a chamber between its mechanical feet for safekeeping. As it noticed them, it let out another shriek and took off, slamming through the floor. It seemed like the last thing it wanted was to get dragged into a knock-down, drag-out brawl.

This is a race-type contest between you and the Bat. It normally moves 30 Meters per round, and it will escape once it's moved 150 meters. If you can close the distance between you to 5 or less or disable it somehow, it will be cornered and a battle will ensue. Normally you need to be within 20 meters of the bat to count as View range, as we'll say it represents being in the same floor as it is, or catching sight of it through a hole. Certain powers may change that, extending your targeting range. The Bat acts on Initiative 10. List your initiativse when you post and we'll resolve your actions in order. At the moment, Robin is 30 meters away from it, and Conrad 40. Go!

Scene 2

"All other agents are occupied at the moment, Hellhound." Ra'id said, taking in what was happening at the Baur Au Lac through Conrad's reports and a quick camera uplink. The five-second lag between audio and video was unacceptable, but it was the best he could do in these circumstances...

At the control room, Ra'id Belcry's inexpressive face twitched and displayed his annoyance for a moment, before returning to its usual serene state. For the smartest man alive, 'good but not perfect' was unacceptable. He should have a perfect transmission prepared. He'd have to work on that, and quickly. And in the meantime...

"I will send Foucault to assist you. Standby." Turning his head sideways, Ra'id look at the mechanical spider on his shoulder. "Go." He commanded, and his greatest creation scuttled away to protect his brother and charges.

---

Outside, the battle had become even more dire. Roxie had tried to make a break for it, but one of the Gjaum was in hot pursuit. She was faster than it, though. She was confident she could get away...and that was exactly when the other Gjaum landed in front of her, overcoming her greater speed with a mighty leap.

Crap.

The UGN agents weren't doing much better, either. The Gjaum that had chased after Sofia was almost breathing down on her already. She'd only have time for one more shot before it closed the distance and it was too late to escape him. And George...

...George was busy getting pummelled. As the Gjaum tried to savage the innocent swiss protestors, he stepped in the way, the beasts' claws raking the flesh of his torso for his troubles. He managed to evade or absorb the other blows, but just one had been enough to send him reeling...dammit, these things hurt! His counterattack was just as vicious however, and put one of them six feet under. Just six more to go...

Roxie makes a Breakaway, but Gjaum 3 (which she wounded earlier) charges after her and Engages, while Gjaum 5 goes around her and sets up a Blockade. She's got one turn to try to run or shoot down Number 3 before Number 5 closes in and tries to eviscerate her as well. That, or try to run, if she fancies her chances. Gjaum 7 continues to run towards Sofia, and is now a meager 14 meters away. George takes down Gjaum 1, and takes 27 damage from Gjaum 6. Good luck, Hellhound.

Scene 3

Less than three minutes had passed when Ty's phone told him he had a message. It said the following:

pre:
Bentham has finished cracking Biryl's code. Sharp's analysis was partially accurate,
but he failed to notice the keylogger that detected when an unlocking phrase
had been typed upon startup. With that out of the way, the decryption process
was quite simple. Biryl's personal files (after removing various gaming
and work software) consist of the following:

-A dream journal and a day-to-day journal, both in plain-text files.
-Several scanned medical reports, indicating a steady but unexplainable increase
in muscle tone and general fitness on the victim over a period of two months.
-Fifty megabytes of plain-text written pornography, catering to a wide variety of tastes.
Two non-pornographic pictures were spliced inbetween the text. The model is unknown.
I have sent the pictures over as an adjunct. Their meaning is unknown.
-A dummy copy of Digital Fortress, containing a skeleton of the code,
minus several important subroutines. Another picture was attached to the executable file,
for an unknown purpose. It has also been sent over. Cross-referencing the model
has yielded no results.
Following the message were the three pictures, as promised.

This data comes courtesy of the Unit Chief, who used Walking Encyclopedia and rolled high enough to determine these details. His ER has increased from a base 32 to 42 because of 'entering a scene' and using a power.

The result of Madeleine's background check came with Ty's data. As far as she could tell, Miss Thun, Miss Gerich and Miss Vandemonte all checked out. Miss Tanouchi and Barbados' itineraries presented several large gaps before their arrival at Zurich, with no known explanation. Miss Swinn was a complete enigma. She appeared to not be registered in any government database. None of their portraits were a match for the pictures, at first glance...

Perception Checks from everyone, if you please.

Scene 4:

Ashita only had to turn left once and walk down a short corridor to get a good look at what was happening outside. It was exactly what she was expecting - a battle between...Overeds, that was the name, wasn't it? Yes, Overeds and Gjaums. What was odd was that there were innocents caught in the crossfire. If she remembered what Therese had told her correctly, that never happened...something was off here. And what was worse, the Overeds seem to be losing. They were hanging on, but things weren't looking good for them at all. If nobody intervened, soon they'd be nothing more than blood on the pavement.

To enter the fight, give me another ER roll and then post an action. Ashita starts 60 meters away from the nearest point of the crowd, 44 from Roxie and the two Gjaum chasing after her. The Red Servant will continue to feed her information throughout, remaining in Scene 4.

George and the Gjaum he downs strike eachother at the same time. As George's Hell Claw obliterates his enemy's head, the Gjaum claw cuts through the side of his face deeply, stunning him for a moment. Just long enough for one Gjaum to get through to the crowd he's protecting. The creature's maw opens to snap at the closest civilian, when a bloodied, clawed hand intercepts it and holds the upper jaw with superhuman strength.

At the same time, two Gjaum tries to attack from the side while he's preoccupied, but George is ready this time, he sidesteps one and the same aura from before stops the other attack from connecting.

"Good to hear, egghead." Black lightning begins stirring in right hand that's holding the Gjaums maw open. "I don't know how long I can keep my priorities straight."

He throws the other Gjaum back away from the crowd quickly, hopefully with enough time for his black lightning to have damaged it.

Scene 1:

As Robin's sound ball soared through the air, the machinery attached to the bat's torso roared to life. A sound not unlike a jet turbine filled the air, absolutely unbearable to any ear, shattering all the crystals in the floor. Robin could feel his blood vessels rupture from the sheer sonic intensity as the bat began rocketing away from him at an insane speed.

The Bat plays one of its trap cards, and Counters Robin's attack! He rolls a 35 and halts it, making Robin take Taint 3. He loses 9 HP on each turn until cured.

In response to Conrad's attack, the bat swiveled nimbly in mid-air, and the needles passed by it, harmlessly. It was agile - too agile, for an animal fused to such an enormous machine. Catching it would not be an easy task.

On a simple dodge roll, the bat goes supercritical and scores a 30. Conrad's attack is dodged!

As it flew away, the bat howled triumphantly. For a moment, all of the Overeds in the building thought their heads would explode, while Mr. Perlbell's captor made a run for it.

Finally, it lets out a fiendish howl, forcing both of them to defend against a 28 or become Dazed and take 22 damage. Krysmbot really, really hates you guys I think.

BAT'S FLIGHT PATH: 30/150 Meters Cleared.

Scene 2

Ashita's timely intervention turned the tide of what had quickly become a losing battle, even though it could turn out to be a brief reprieve. Suddenly, Roxie had room to run, and George's attack struck hard, almost splattering the Gjaum before its Renegade cells started to pull him back together. Sofia was not so lucky, however - suddenly, she had a very angry, very vicious beast howling at her face. At this distance, her rifle would not be of much use to her. If ever there had been a time for sudden inspiration, it was now. Things were *not* looking good for her.

With Sofia's shot going wide, her Gjaum closes the distance and Engages her.

...Or for George, for that matter. Enraged by his attack, the Gjaums had gone absolutely berserk, ripping into him with wild abandon. Claws lashed out at him from all sides, leaving him with little room to dodge...and the strength behind their blows left him with little room to take them head-on, either.

The remaining active Gjaums turn on George and try to hit him hard. Their attack rolls are 19, 30 (!!) and 18, and their damage rolls a nutty 24, 39 and 33. Even Dragon Scales can't fully dull that much damage, yikes. The last remaining Gjaum is currently locked in place, so Roxie is free to run with her Minor action if she wants and keep taking potshots.

Scene 3

Ty only had time for a very quick skim, but even that was enough to produce some interesting results. Biryl was rather verbose. He certainly liked to write, if his journal was any indication.

September 26, 20XX - Pretty Woman?
Life doesn't work like it does in the movies. Everybody knows that, nobody'd be stupid enough to say war is as glammy as it is in a Rambo flick or vigilantes are anything but terrifying psychos in real life. Don't even get me started on what hollywood thinks a hacker does, either.

...So why did I just get a star role in a boy meets girl scenario, then? You know me, Diary. I've met some pretty weird people working the trade. This chick I met today takes the cake, though. Ran into her on the street on the way back from the grocer's - literally, we slammed into each other hard. With the way she was acting, you'd have thought I was bleeding out from a gunshot wound or something. Kept hugging and sobbing, saying she was so, so sorry. Kind of overdid it a bit...nah, scratch that, make that a lot, I'm 95% sure she broke into tears at some point, I was too stunned to double-check. Would've been really phony, but from the look on her face, she really was that worried about a random joe she met on the street. I spent the next fifteen minutes apologizing to her and trying to get her to calm down. Then we just...sort of...spent the next half hour chatting. I don't even remember what we were going on about - small talk, mostly. End result, though, she told me she wanted to make it up to me for ruining my day (??) and gave me her phone number, then made me write my own down and promise I'd call me. The loonie didn't even tell me her name...well, actually, she did but I think she was pulling my leg. 'Amy Sztery'. C'mon, really? 'A Mystery'? If I didn't know no girl would be so gaga for me, I'd guess she was some kind of psycho stalker or something. Maybe she's part of the organ trade and acts as a honey trap? I should probably just throw this number away.

...Eh, whatever. Don't feel like it right now. I'll think about what to do tomorrow.

Couldn't have been busier this week if I'd tried. Sorry for not talking to you lately, Diary, but there was just no way. Digital Fortress is way behind schedule and my girlfriend leaves me feeling so exhausted I have to make a heroic effort not to crash on the floor every time I come home.

...Yeah. I got a girlfriend now. Again. I swore I was retiring from the scene after the fiasco with Etta (I bet she's still raving about worlds of traitors or something), but somehow I got pulled back in. I blame Amy. She's crazy, too. Well, not *crazy* crazy, but she's kind of touched, if you catch my drift. She's always talking to me about how she can hear the flowers talking to her while tending to her garden (she's a gardener by trade, I think - I got that much out of her, wasn't really clear though). She still hasn't told me her real name. And the weirdest part - she keeps dragging me into the most dangerous places by accident. I feel like secret service sometimes, she clearly doesn't have a clue where she's going. And she-

...poo poo. poo poo! I forgot about Etta! The next visit to the asylum is in two days! I need to call Amy and cancel our date, I can't just leave Etta with no contact to the outside world. What kind of rear end in a top hat am I, forgetting about her? Ah, hell, and how am I going to explain to Amy that I'm canceling everything to make sure my insane ex-girlfriend doesn't end up feeling lonely? This is going to be a mess. Amy's nice, but boy, she's clingy. She's going to have the worst freakout once she hears that "the only bee in her garden" (sic) is visiting another girl, bet you a hundred to one on it, Diary.

It wasn't immediately obvious, but Katip and Madeline's eyes were keen enough to notice more than a passing resemblance between the pictures of the lady with white hair and the photographs of miss Serpentine Swinn. True, the eye colour was wrong, and the hair was the wrong colour and too long, but they had the same facial structure, with only a few, minor divergences. The other picture was more puzzling. The more they looked at it, the more they felt a strange feeling of familiarity take over them. They'd seen that face before...but where? It wasn't the kind of person one would easily forget, either. Who was that girl?

---

Room 314's lights were out, by the looks of it. Even from outside, they could catch a waft of the thick, intoxicating smell inside, sweet like honey and yet relaxing like linden. Another 'surprise', maybe?

Normally Conrad prefers smaller, more precise blades.

This is not that time.

An enormous blade of sand slams through an interfering wall and toward the creature.

Either Robin will slow it so I can see it or he won't. If he doesn't, I'm declaring Neumann Bullshit to aim a shot through an intervening wall at Krysmbot KPrime, (8 7, 6 6 6 2)(10, 3)(8,)(3)+4 = 37 -2 = 35, because otherwise my role in this race is basically done since it will outrange me for the entire remaining distance unless I spend every turn dashing, which will just leave me at the same place every single time. I'm at 35 m and willing to roll whatever to just smash the intervening building bits and do Krysmbot KPrime, 23+6 = 29. If that's still not cool I'm dropping out of the race and heading for the roof- I'll get more done setting up a shot from there as it tries to escape than I will uselessly chasing it.

Also, didn't Davin get within 5 m of it last turn? Shouldn't it have stopped? If it has, rather than moving on my minor I use Create Armor.

Catching other movement out of the corner of her eye, Sofia makes a gamble. "I know you're monitoring this channel."

Holding the rifle across her body as a shield, she fakes a sharp step towards the gjaum and to the right, then quickly backpedals away from it before twisting around and ducking around a pillar. None of these movements are enough to get away - but that's not the point. She's simply the lure.

And now it's time for the catch - and the gamble. "So I'd very much appreciate it if you'd shoot this thing. Now, please."

All Sofia's apparently futile attempts to escape were toward one end - to move the gjaum a few feet to frame a perfect shot for Roxie.

She contemplates fleeing the area until she notices one of the monsters taking a swipe at Catalyst. Months and months of work and suffering would go straight down the drain if she were to die here.

Then she gets called out over the broadcast. Roxie reflexively looks her in the eyes, doing little to conceal the fact that she could, in fact, hear her. She immediately replies with a long string of hypersonic snaps from her linear cannon. The steady stream of bullets walks straight across the beast's body, nearly cutting it in half.

But after a moment of resistance, it's just too much. A thin trickle of blood drips neatly from his lips, he whimpers a bit as his body starts to tear itself apart from the inside from the sheer difference of pressure... from wave to wave--

And then wavers and falls to the ground, coughing up blood, gasping for air. Robin groans as he struggles to his feet, as if utterly unaware the Grim Reaper is knocking on his door.

"No...Dad..." he gasps as struggles after the beast for a second time. "I...won't let you take...Dad!"

With what little strength he has, he forces himself to stand face to face with the beast and conjure another sphere. It's not quite 440 Hz this time, but as he throws it, he prays it's enough.

Taint and Dazed can't be cured with a minor action, so Robin's just going to force an engagement by moving the full 29 meters, throw another Rave Ball, and then...well, we'll see. The Rave Ball loses two dice thanks to the Dazed condition, but I get back one due to the ER. So...

Scene 1

With the Overeds disabled, the bat had free reign to move through the hotel and make its getaway...or so it thought. As Conrad's enormous blade slammed through the walls towards it, it quickly rose above it. It let out a mocking shriek...

The bat rolls to defend against Conrad's attack (which is allowed because I'm a fan of creative power uses) and gets a 39. That's a miss...

...Right before Robin's sonic burst hit it head-on, causing it tremendous pain and throwing it back down on the blade's path. It only just barely managed to escape an attack that would have certainly killed it otherwise.

But HOLD IT! Because I'd forgotten that Robin's Rave Ball dazes, I rolled too many dice. The bat defended against it and got a 17, so on a tie I favored the attacker. Thus dazed and damaged, the bat has to roll again with less dice and is also hit by the Sand Blade.

Frightened by its sudden burst of blindness, the bat limped away slowly, licking its wounds. In retaliation, it turned around suddenly, as missile hatches opened on the sides of its turbines. Suddenly, a burst of micro-missiles flew towards Robin from all sides...

Bat attacks and lets loose a powerful hit of 28. On a failed dodge, Robin takes 20 damage and is Dazed again. He's at -3 dice to dodge this, too. Not looking good for him here...on the plus side, his attack slows the bat down, giving Conrad more of a chance to catch up. It only moves 25 meters this round.

BAT'S FLIGHT PATH: 55/150 Meters Cleared.

Scene 2

Knowing themselves defeated, the two remaining Gjaum went berserk. Having left herself open, Roxie was simply savaged by the beast she'd turned her back to, avenging the comrade she had felled. George had protected the crowd well, but he'd been pushed to his limit, and he could feel it. When the next Gjaum's attack came for him, he could see it coming in slow motion, sure as death.

Then he heard Ra'id's voice coming through his earpiece. "Hellhound. Duck, now."

Yeah, I'm not even gonna say anything except post the rolls of the two remaining Gjaum. Just...drat. 38 and 55. George and Roxie take 29 and 41 damage, pending miracle dodges.

Scene 3

If it hadn't been for Madeline's practice with recognizing traces of blood, she'd never even have noticed the faint, very faint scent beneath the stronger, more masking odours. The room was perfectly clean and unused...or so it seemed from the outside, at least. As they stepped inside, the smell slowly dissipated, and as it did so, blood began to pour from the floor, forming a large circle near the center of the room. More of Biryl's blood, and the other party's. Before the Agents could take any action to investigate the room further, however, a woman laughed, her voice tinkling like bells.

"You kept me waiting so long...I was wondering when someone would start to miss him. I'm sure you're dying to know why he's dead, aren't you? But I'm not going to tell...not unless you beat me at a little game. Think of it as tracing your finger up a chain. This is the next link, but there's a few more to go. Find the clue and follow it, and you'll get to the truth very soon. At least, I sure hope so!"

As the voice faded away, the lights came on by their lonesome. Was this a trick or trap? Or was Biryl's killer just toying with them? Katip wasn't sure what the answer was just yet, but he knew there was more to this room than was obvious at first glance. There were several tears on the floor, as if someone had stabbed it with a very sharp and thin blade, then dragged it around. Maybe this was the clue they needed to start making some headway.

Scene 4

While Ashita did her best to contain the Gjaum rampaging outside, her Servant continued to study Mr. Weiss' dossier. Soon, bits and pieces of it began to leak into her mind. It seemed to be more personal notes than anything else. How odd...

"...Model student, model child, but a sudden grades slip some time ago, with no explanation. Possible depression? Strife amongst the family? Child abuse? All analyses suggest a perfectionist attitude...such middling performance would be self-perceived as a failure...something is up. [...] Takemitsu head asked for help. His motives are unknown, but not relevant. If a child in need of assistance and comfort can be helped, then Lumines must intervene..."
