Eldad Assarach posted:In the meantime, would anybody like to think of a trap to catch Ziagnork the alien? His Strength is 3 and his Health is 5, meaning the TN for his trap is 8. Ziagnork has been bothering the old air and space museum for who knows why. Reddy, Raphne, Relma, Raggy, and Rooby set out to catch him. Raggy and Rooby shout out that aliens smell bad, getting Z to chase them. Then they dash towards the flight simulators. Relma sprays the ground with cooking oil from the cafeteria greasetraps after Raggy and Rooby run by, making Z slip as he chases them. Z slides into a flight sim and Raphne closes the door and locks it. Reddy turns the sim on to 11, totally discombobulating Z. Rooby and Raggy collect a crashpad and parachutes from the 'be a paratrooper' activity center, and set up below the flight sim. Reddy opens the flight som hatch when the thing is upside down, dumping Z onto the crash pad, where Raggy and Rooby pull the ripcords on the parachutes and tangle up the evil ET. Commence calling the police and unmasking.

theironjef posted:Yeah, that's so silly. Indy has a crazy ability to just mutter "Well this is an ancient dialect, but I can probably puzzle out the gist." Why take that away from the players who are just trying to play as Indy? Earn your fun, 80s plebes. Don't you mean "are forced to play as Indy?" That strict stock playbook business was so distasteful to me, I wasn't surprised their product tanked. Edit: Speaking of failed game products, I have a copy of The Noir RPG, by Archon Games. As far as I can tell, Archon never made any other products. I have never run it, and only have it because it was given to me as a gift. I recall it being a fairly lackluster book, with a really obnoxious typeface. D6 dicepool + merits/flaws for the system. I'm not sure if it'd be worth doing a writeup for the thread, but I'll give it a solid reread and maybe I'll do that. Green Intern fucked around with this message at 00:09 on Jul 25, 2014 |

Halloween Jack posted:If I recall correctly, there were some really shady backstage hijinx in the making of that game. I believe it was a case of "a geek with some money invests it in his dream" and there were shenanigans with writers and artists not getting paid while they blew money on ridiculous poo poo like catered parties at conventions. I would not be surprised. The book just has this feeling of "cut corners" all the way through. I recall a fair few really simple typos that would have been caught if anyone was being paid to give a drat.

Halloween Jack posted:I quoted a bunch of stuff here, but it was too much. Long story short, developer Jack Norr just tears into the company in this RPGnet thread. Holy crap, that's impressive sleuthing. I'll start my reread this weekend. Might take a bit to actually get some content down for the thread. Edit: Read that rpgnet thread, and now I understand the true horror of Archon. Also someone laments the "erstwhile vilification of Kevin Siembieda," which makes me laugh. Thanks for the information. I'll incorporate at least some of it into my writeup somehow. Green Intern fucked around with this message at 13:10 on Jul 25, 2014 |

Halloween Jack posted:It gets worse! I saw a bit of commentary by Stolze about the whole Archon/UA deal when I was looking around last night. He didn't really say anything negative about Archon, but did note that after a certain point, Lisa Mann (the owner) just sort of...disappeared.

Just as an update on the Noir writeup: it's going to take me a while. I didn't get a chance to read the book over the weekend, and I'm pretty busy for the next couple weeks. Maybe I can get an intro post up sometime soon, though.

Ratpick posted:Monsterhearts is cool. It's also, in my experience, both the hardest and the easiest game to get people to play. Like, people who are already into tabletop will react with something between "What is this Twilight bullshit?" and "Why would I play a game of teenage drama when I could play a cool fantasy hero?" with usually a side of "Ewww, it's about sex" to taste. I've had the most success finding people to play it with by asking from people within my social circles who have no preconceptions of what RPGs need to be about and are open to the idea of teenage monster melodrama. This encapsulates my opinion on Monsterhearts exactly. I think it's really awesome, but I have one or two final mental hurdles to kick over and give the finger to before I'm ready to embrace the teen angst. Edit: Your review is probably what will get me to play Monsterhearts eventually. Green Intern fucked around with this message at 19:31 on Aug 20, 2014 |

The "hoax became real" origin is probably referencing this one episode of Supernatural where that exact thing happened due to thousands of people on a creepypasta/urban legend site sharing a magic symbol along with their versions of the story. It was way more interesting than this skin.

I remember playing some sort of kludged-together FF game with friends using 3.5ed DnD. We had limit breaks, materia, summons/assists, and combo moves. It was some unholy mix of Chrono Trigger and FF6/7, really. So I'm pretty excited to read about this Returners game

Warcraft RPG posted:Stand at Death's Door:(Con +15, Cleave, Toughness, BAB+7, 20 or more HP) you deal extra damage with melee attacks equal to 20-current hit points. Wouldn't you stop qualifying for this feat as soon as you went under 20HP, RAW? It was the first thing I read, and obviously that would be the stupidest way to read the rules. Also that beloved commander feat is terrible. No PC would want to take it, because who would expect and want to be knocked out of combat?
