White Wolf was really starting to crap out at the start of the decade- between the height of the recession, the layoffs, and the eventual birth of Onyx Path, they produced their last physical books and the writing either became mediocre or outright stupid in some cases, like this or that one creepy as hell chapter in the Werewolf Chronicler's Guide.

Besides, the idea of "You are secretly run by teh BAD GUYS O NOEZ!!1!" is so loving cliche and overplayed it's not fun to play with. Twists like "They're monsters, but still patriots" are much more palatable.

Edit: That book also had a pretty cool Werewolves in Ancient Sumer chapter, though.

That it did. The issue with the chapter in question wasn't so much the "No werewolf sex taboo" but the way it was written. I can't describe how skincrawly it was, like the author was trying to convince you to have sex in a fursuit.

EDIT: ^^^^^ No, but it came pretty close to resurrecting the Animal Magnetism rules from Apocalypse.

One of Promethean's supplements had some stuff on human cloning. If memory serves it wasn't bad, just a bit out of place for most Promethean games and kind of forgettable as a result.

Promethean started getting into a lot of Sci-Fi stuff with the Zeka and the Unfleshed, and I think they were looking for stuff to fill out the last book.

Pretty much. There's nothing that sucks about being a Sin-Eater to drive the plot- nothing's pursuing you, your Geist has no mechanical control over you, there's nothing stopping you from going back to your old life. I blame the recession for a lack of playtesting.

Blue Rose seems like a fantasy take on Star Trek- the government is built on humane foundations and is run by good and noble people, so you're supposed to adventure and explore away from it or fight those who want to undermine it. It's just that they spend so much time talking about the kingdom before getting to the playable stuff that it seems preachy.

And Ulisses recently recalled a Ingame history book due to fan outrage about the changes...it´s hilarious.

We kind of have to review it now. And by biggest and most successful, you mean by overall sales or just your best selling domestic game?

I'm not familiar with the sales, but The Dark Eye is our Dungeons & Dragons in that nearly everyone has played it at some point. D&D was never as big here, and the competition with D&D has probably become even less after WotC basically abandoned the German market after the first release of the 4th edition core books. Not sure if they're back with the 5th edition though.
Sure, the d20-philes probably moved on to Pathfinder, but guess who owns the license to both Pathfinder and The Dark Eye?

Part of my confusion was that I got Das Schwarze Auge confused with a very different game where everyone lived on bridges over an endless sea of tar- go figure. But yeah, it got started in '84 while D&D was still in its birth stages, conquered its market, and never let go. Can't wait to see how three decades of unrebooted metaplot works.

Also I the demigod I mentioned was this dude, just in case I'm misunderstanding you.

Sounds like Tales of Gargentihr , a 1990s steampunky fantasy game where the world featured solid rock continents floating in giant seas of...silt. One-and-done publisher, and I'd call it a heartbreaker except the setting is just too weird to really be in the tradition of AD&D-only-with-more-rules fantasy heartbreakers.

That's not it- it was definitely black tar, post-apocalyptic, and possibly French (Humans might've lived on barges instead of bridges- seems more workable). Someone in the Good, Bad, & Catpiss thread described it, and how one player ignored everything else about the campaign to dive into the tar with his submarine.

An IWW magic union would have each magical type and school as one section of a larger Spellworkers Union.

ARCANE DEPARTMENT, SPELLCASTING UNIONS
110- Abjurers
120- Conjurers
130- Diviners
etc.

DIVINE DEPARTMENT, SPELLCASTING UNIONS
110- Lawful Good Clerics
120- Neutral Good Clerics

Maybe a seperate department for druids or lump them in with the divines, then have one for magical creatures...

1980s design, to me, means efforts at making systems more unified, more universal, more “realistic”. Moving away from the D&D/AD&D model of independent subsystems that weren’t terribly well integrated. Comprehensive skill systems. Universal result tables (like in Marvel Super Heroes). Things like Champions/Hero, GURPS, BRP, Rolemaster, and the first D6 games.

It wasn’t all detailed weapons tables - there were a lot of proto-narative games with explicit genre elements from that era. Toon, Paranoia, and James Bond 007 are three that I can name off the top of my head.

It strikes me as a transition from common law (Collections of rulings and systems established on a case-by-case basis) to civil law (Something designed and written from the bottom-up to work together as a coherent whole).
