It's kinda a two-steps-forward-one-step-back thing. On the one hand he's a lost a lot of the individuality from previous series because they're all just basic humans and not nutso half-repaired posthuman cyborgs, but on the other hand the faces are technically a lot better and he can draw eyes on the same level now. :v:

Best face in the comic so far is either Izana's absolute horror when Nagate catches her in that old dress, or Tsugumi's amazing poo poo-eating grin after taking that pilot for a joyride.

I think it's a really nice touch how Nagate is the only person who has zero trouble with that.

Alright guys, here we go: the Knights of Sidonia Character Sheet. Solution to all your character woes.

I am fairly certain I got character with both a face and a name here, even the ones that only exist to get munched. There are a number of recurring background characters that just haven't been named yet; I didn't bother with those. They're ordered by first appearance, roughly.

01 - Tanikaze Nagate

Pilot ID: TS028 (trainee) / 704 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Protagonist hair

Description: Our hero, a young man with a gift for piloting and a (relatively) large appetite. Spent most of his life cut off from the rest of the ship, raised by his grandfather, Saitou Hiroki. Goofy, but dedicated to protecting his friends. Is ludicrously attractive to the opposite sex; if there's a female character on this list, she's probably wanted to climb on that at one point or another.

Pilots Tsugumori, a refurbished Type-17 that was instrumental to winning the last war.

And when we say he's got a gift for piloting, holy poo poo, this guy's got a kill count that dwarfs anybody else's; it could be more than everybody else's combined. He's got the only Mass Union Ship kill. He can keep up with Tsumugi, who is an alien death monster.

Eventually revealed to be Saitou's clone, with a special immortal body that has an accelerated healing factor.

02 - Saitou Hiroki/Grandfather

Pilot ID: 3' (Immortal Ship Committee)
Distinguishing Features: Like Tanikaze, only old. Except when he's not old.

Description: Tanikaze's elderly grandfather, who raised him in some forgotten corner of the ship's piping. Was actually a member of the Immortal Ship Committee, and the original ace pilot. Was part of the team that made the first Gauna kill, along with Kobayashi and Lala; eventually resigned from the committee and stopped taking his anti-agathics in protest over Kobayashi's punishment of Ochiai. Is presumably now dead, though I don't know if it was ever confirmed.

03 - Kunato Norio/Ochiai v2.0

Pilot ID: TS001 (trainee) / 701 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Light hair, pretty, thousand yard stare. He's pretty recognisable.

Description: Tanikaze's primary rival, early on. The eldest son of the Kunato family and heir to Kunato Industries, Kunato likes to believe that everything he has he has earnt, and is rather distraught when Tanikaze supplants him as ace and pilot of Tsugumori. Is so distraught that he orchestrates the death of Hoshijiro in an act of petty revenge. He never receives his comeuppance for this. :geno:

All things considered, though, he is a pretty good pilot.

Eventually retires from piloting, in the wake of the resurrection of Toha Industries, and the reversal of his family's fortunes. Just when you think he might be making his way to not being a terrible person, he manages to get his sister and himself brain-jacked by Ochiai and his goon. Well done, guy, top marks. :golfclap:

04 - Hoshijiro Shizuka

Pilot ID: TS336 (trainee) / 702 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Bob cut with bangs.

Description: One of the first trainees to make Guardian in Tanikaze's class; seems rather kind and considerate. The first of many, many women to fall to Tanikaze's charms, but unique among them in that Tanikaze reciprocates. They are more or less formally dating by the time they make Guardian. Tanikaze's love for Hoshijiro is interesting because it persists long after her death, despite the fact that they really weren't together all that long. In fact, I'm not entirely certain that she's not the True End, despite the fact that she's dead.

Is killed by Kunato's scheme to discredit Tanikaze, but that doesn't keep her down long. Half the characters on this list are alien monster clones of her.

05 - Ochiai v1.5

Distinguishing Features: Full suit, sly looking motherfucker.

Description: The Captain's right hand. Is actually her brainwashed former enemy, the mad scientist Ochiai. Kept around because his cyborg brain contains a wealth of information that can't be found elsewhere, and the organic parts are necessary to access it. Telekinetic.

06 - The Captain/Kobayashi

Pilot ID: 2' (Immortal Ship Committee)
Distinguishing Features: Wears a mask (except when she doesn't), has extremely long hair (except when it's short) tied up in a ponytail (except when it's a bun). Has a sort of samurai/lady of war motif going on. Except when she's being GI Jane.

Description: Sidonia's 28th captain, a mysterious woman whose face is always hidden by a mask. Likes to disguise herself as ordinary members of the crew. Apparently, this is her "only pleasure". That's a little sad, hon. Is in fact all of Sidonia's captains, and an immortal.

Early on, she's shown to be rather affectionate to Tanikaze, presumably because he's the clone of one of her oldest friends. In general, however, she is very much a means justifies ends, victory at any cost sort of character, and brooks no dissent. She's probably a lot closer to Ochiai than she wants to admit.

I have this picture filed under "mournful space bear"

07 - Hiyama Lala

Pilot Id: 4' (Immortal Ship Committee)
Distinguishing Features: Dress, funky snood/hat thing, mechanical arm, is a bear.

Description: Is the Guardian's dorm-mother. Matronly and doting, especially to Tanikaze. Is in fact a member of the Immortal Ship Committee and was part of the team that discovered Kabi and made the first Gauna kill. Was Saitou's closest friend.

08 - The Immortal Ship Committee

Distinguishing Features: Weird-rear end cyborg guys in pods. Hard to mistake.

Description: Obstructive Japanese bureaucrats in the grand tradition of obstructive Japanese bureaucrats, they exist mostly to give the Captain poo poo and be completely useless. Made the mistake of trying to depose Kobayashi, so now they deaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

09 - Shinatose Izana

Pilot ID: 723 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Bob cut, with the fringe swept to one side.

Description: Tanikaze's intersex best friend. Has been crushing on him more or less since they first met, and is in fact crushing so hard that s/he's turning into a woman. A pilot of middling ability only, s/he didn't make Guardian for quite a while after Tanikaze did, and remained one of the rank and file until very recently. Is jealous and possessive, tends to get violently angry whenever Tanikaze does something s/he doesn't like, and never tells him what he did wrong. Despite what some in this thread have claimed, s/he's no more erratic as a woman than as an androgyne; I made a point of checking.

Has a friendly rivalry with Yuhata.

10 - The Honoka Sisters

Distinguishing Features: Long, light (pink?) hair.

Description: A group of eleven clone sisters, five years old and vat-grown. The series pays special attention to three of the eleven: En (TS010/703), who is violent and makes Guardian when Tanikaze does, Hou (705), who is killed by Benisuzume, and Ren (706), who seems to be the most diplomatic and the closest to Tanikaze. There's also a Ro who appears a couple of times, but she isn't all that remarkable.

11 - Yamano Eiko

Distinguishing Features: Dem eyebrows, got et

Description: The first of many characters who are introduced just before they are killed in their first sortie, Eiko sticks around long enough to tell us that she worked long and hard to get into the Guardian program and resents being grouped with a bunch of people who were admitted for their special talents, before being unceremoniously eaten.

Her death is especially affecting to Tanikaze, and may have served to catalyse his latent heroic tendencies.

12 - Akai Mochikuni

Pilot ID: 001 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: 70's protagonist hair.

Description: Akai is the ace pilot of the Guardian forces at the beginning of the story, and leader of the most elite squadron. Unfortunately, Sidonia hasn't had contact with the Gauna in mortal living memory, so that doesn't mean much. Gets chumped off-screen in his first sortie.

13 - Midorikawa

Pilot ID: 004 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Deuteragonist hair.

Description: A member of Akai's team and older brother of Yuhata. Seems to be the cynical one. Gets munched with the rest of his team in their first engagement.

14 - Aoki

Pilot ID: 003 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Rectangular face? The guy's in, like, four panels.

Description: Another member of the chump squad. If Midorikawa's cynical then I guess this guy's morose. So dead.

15 - Momose

Pilot ID: 002 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Long hair, below the shoulder, loose.

Description: Chump squad's sole female member. Akai's girlfriend; unimpressed by Midorikawa and Aoki's grousing. Yep, she dead.

16 - Seii Ichiro

Pilot ID: 026 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Light hair, cut short. Always serious.

Description: Sidonia's XO, until he is for some reason replaced by Yuhata and stuck on piloting duty. Why? :iiam:

One of the elite pilots and commonly a squad leader. Is the person spreading rumours about Samari.

17 - Sasaki

Distinguishing Features: Got those goggle things on her head.

Description: Toha Heavy Industries' chief engineer, architect of the Type-19s and the Ultra-High-Speed Bullet Accelerator. Occasionally seems to double as Tanikaze's personal mechanic, and is greatly unamused by his constantly wrecking Tsugumori. Possibly the strongest human alive? :ssh:

18 - Tanba Shinsuke

Distinguishing Features: Old, wears a helmet.

Description: Sasaki's assistant and right hand; an engineer for Toha. Seems to have a grudge against Kunato, I'm guessing because they put him out of a job.

19 - Midorikawa Yuhata

Distinguishing Features: Brown/red hair, beauty mark.

Description: The little sister Midorikawa, is originally introduced as a rival for Izana, but that seems to have fizzled out. Hilariously, goes from trainee to XO without passing through any intermediate ranks, but proves to be rather competent in her new position. Is rather devious.

20 - Samari Ita

Pilot ID: 005 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Short ponytail.

Description: The most experienced veteran left, with Akai dead. Is a highly competent squad leader- many of her wingmen survive the experience! There are rumours floating around that she'll, ahem, "photosynthesise" with the MVP of any given battle: Samari is not amused by this.

21 - Benisuzume/GA-490/Hoshijiro Clone α

Distinguishing Features: Distinctive twelve-pupil pattern on her eyes; is red all over, though it's hard to tell in a black and white manga.

Description: The first and most important of Hoshijiro's many clones, Benisuzume is the most tenacious and most formidable opponent Sidonia has faced to date. It's not necessarily the most powerful, but it is the fastest, and the most intelligent.

Is eventually killed by Tanikaze, but not before its pilot-self crawls into his cockpit and tongue-fucks him with tentacles. :catstare:

If any of the clones can be said to be a genuine reincarnation of Hoshijiro, it's probably this one.

22 - GA-491/Hoshijiro Clone β

Distinguishing Features: Got monster bits on.

Description: Another clone of Hoshijiro, captured when its true body was destroyed by the Guardians. Shown to have a more rudimentary intelligence than GA-490, and a few scattered memories from its original.

Is appropriated by Kunato!Ochiai and used to birth Tsumugi.

23 - Imada

Pilot ID: 139 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: :iiam:

Description: Dies in the first encounter with Benisuzume.

24 - Tahiro Numi

Distinguishing Features: Glasses, round face, bob cut, giant breasts. No, no, the manga makes a point of this.

Description: Chief tech for the Outer Space Lifeform Research Centre; is in charge of containing the collected Gauna samples and prodding them with sticks. Gets brain-jacked by Ochiai's mindworms so he can appropriate GA-491, and eventually shoots herself. Fare thee well, we hardly knew thee.

25 - Tonami

Pilot ID: 006 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Stache, beard.

Description: A member of Samari's squad and apparently an expert with the Higgs Particle Beam Cannon; naturally, this backfires on him. Dead.

26 - Tsuruuchi

Pilot ID: 007 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Large nose, pounded flat by repeated jackassery.

Description: Another member of Samari's squad, and the only one that sticks around for any length of time. Is the team buffoon, and obsessed with getting Samari naked.

27 - Migita

Pilot ID: 164 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: :iiam:

Description: Another background pilot, though interestingly enough he doesn't actually die.

28 - Suzuki

Pilot ID: 1' (Immortal Ship Committee)
Distinguishing Features: Mid-range hair, serious looking.

Description: The fourth and final member of Saitou, Kobayashi and Lala's original team, and the one that left before they got famous. I mean, died to show off how hosed they were.

29 - Ochiai v1.0

Distinguishing Features: Weird-rear end cyborg dude not in a pod.

Description: The original mad scientist, sent down for recklessly endangering the ship with his experiments. Is eventually resurrected and reborn into Kunato's body via the magic of MINDWORMS. Of all Sidonia's top-level factions, Ochiai is probably the worst, brain-jacking people left right and centre and not really interested in the welfare of anyone except himself.

30 - Shinatose Yure

Distinguishing Features: It's subtle, and I'm pretty impressed with Nihei for pulling this off, but she's a slightly more feminine-looking version of Izana. Is as often seen wearing a mask as not, though, so the most reliable way to recognise her is by... *drumroll*... those little spiky pouch things just below her collar. No, I'm serious. :v:

Description: Izana's grandmother. Or not! Seems to be Sidonia's chief scientist, a specialist in cloning and genetic modification. Was a late addition to the Immortal Ship Committee, only a hundred years ago or so. Is notably less sure of herself than the other immortals.

31 - Kunato Mozuku/"Toxin"

Distinguishing Features: A female Kunato.

Description: Kunato Norio's younger sister and shadow. Often seems to know more than he does, oddly enough. Brain-jacked by a little robot bodyguard of Ochiai's. Is now his right hand.

32 - Pilot 751

Pilot ID: 751 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Freckles, hair that curls at the bottom.

Description: I'm breaking my rules on named characters here, but this girl and the next guy turn up regularly enough that it feels like they should have names. Rank and file pilot, like Izana.

33 - Pilot 735

Pilot ID: 735 (Guardian)
Distinguishing Features: Blocky face, fat nose.

Description: I'm not even sure I have this guy's designation down correctly. It's either 735 or 785.

34 - Shiraui Tsumugi

Distinguishing Features: The most adorable space monster.

Description: A human-Gauna hybrid created by Ochiai as Kunato, to be the next great weapon for Sidonia. And, for Ochiai, the ultimate lifeform. Is sweet and excitable, like a little kid, and beloved by all. ALL I SAY. :argh:

Birthed from GA-491.

35 - 5'

Distinguishing Features: First a pod-person, then a rather attractive man. Got a big 5 on him.

Description: The member of the not-so-Immortal Ship Committee who thinks he's got the chops to replace Kobayashi. Ahahahaha, right, yeah, have fun with that. Thought for the day: if he's 5', does Lala outrank him?

36 - Kanata

Distinguishing Features: The least adorable space monster.

Description: The second chimera birthed by Kunato. Is rather less tractable than Tsumugi, and has a MOTHERFUCKING GRAVITATIONAL BEAM EMITTER where its right eye should be. Somehow, an uncontrollable space monster with an omegaweapon for an eye is not sufficient reason for Kobayashi to shut the project down, which is probably a sign that she's losing it.

I've been binge reading this all evening and I'm currently on volume 3, chapter 13. I felt the first battle was kind of cliche and the second battle just confused me. Did Nagate pass out at a crucial moment while piloting his mecha? After that though I feel like it picked up.

I wish the author did multiple points of view from different characters on different ships rather than the lone Sidonia. It would have been fascinating to see the different cultures and innovations different ships had come up with.

I hope that at some point Sidonia makes contact with another ship.

There may be other ships, but every single one built went a different direction. The last time they were close enough to communicate was those thousand years ago. It's assumed since they have been relentlessly chased, any other ships were either caught already or simply can never stop either way.

I think being engineered by humans could be likely. After all, Hoshijiro states that the first Gauna to descend upon Earth possessed human forms. From what we've seen so far, Gauna only replicate the form of something after it is absorbed. One thing I'd like to know about the initial invasion is what exactly happened to make the Earth end up splitting in two? That's a pretty cataclysmic event. Did the seed ships depart before or after that? I suppose, at present, these aren't the most important details, but I am curious regardless.

Well, she is resistant to Kabi, but I don't necessarily think that means she is indestructible. If it is assumed that she is similar to Tsumugi as far as repair factors are concerned, then she cannot automatically regenerate. Chimeras don't possess a true body, do they? If that's the case, then why is the Kabi resistance so important? To begin with, Kabizashis can't even penetrate a placenta barrier that's 1 centimeter in thickness.

No, her skeleton and parts of her carapace are based on the composite material that covers the true body, but also treated to be resistant to kabi. It's the same reason the guardian Nagate currently uses is indestructible. They even mentioned that you can dunk the stuff inside of a sun and it'll survive.

Ah, okay, well that makes sense. I must have glossed over that detail when I read through everything over the weekend. I'm not sure if the graviton beam emitter would take care of that, seeing as how those planet buster warheads don't kill Gauna.

From the panels shown for the 'flashback', the original mass union ship literally ripped Earth in half. Gauna seemed to have burrowed all the way through to the core and use massive combined tentacles to cut Earth in half. On the panel where it showed the two halves of Earth, there are massive Gauna tentacles wriggling through the center of both halves, like worms in a split apple.

You know this would out of context be ridiculous Mary Sue'ism for the antagonists, but in context of the manga where we can kind of accept this kind of ridiculous power existing, it's downright terrifying and alien in its very definition - The logic and power behind such a deed.

It could be like Muv-Luv, :siren::siren: Muv-Luv spoilers ahead :siren::siren: where the aliens are in fact Von Neumann machines acting on some sort of directive that's gone awry from our perspective. I kind of hope the author doesn't go that way unless he builds it really well - In fact Gauna might never be explained. Sometimes the unknowable is better entertainment.

Gauna work best as psychosexual horror of feminity, the yin to the original xenomorph's yang. Best keep them fundamentally unknowable, you can befriend and even breed with some, but I hope to never know where they came from.

I was getting the impression that Izuma's sex was starting to change somehow to female.

People say bigger is better.

But for the first time in my life, I think I've gone too far.

Izana, and yes, Izana is becoming a woman. When intersex people feel strongly physically attracted to someone, they will slowly become the opposite sex of the person they are attracted to, in order to facilitate having children. It's one of the human genetic experiments (along with rapid-growth clones, and photosynthesis) that resulted from Ochiai nearly destroying the entire population of Sidonia.

I'd say go chronologically. Start with Blame! In addition to seeing how he grows as an artist, it'll give you a way to see how he uses ideas and names in different ways. Be warned though: Abara does deal with creatures called Gauna which may or may not give insight to what they are in Sidonia. I would say it probably isn't directly related to Sidonia though.

Blame!

Very different feeling to the Knights of Sidonia, but probably the most "coherent" of nihei's works.

or for a shorter thing to get a taste of his other stuff: Abara, just don't try to make sense of what is going on.

Blame! and Biomega. Also go read up Noise once you get past Sanakan's appearance in 'Blame!', and then resume Blame!. Abara is quite good as well, but it's really short.
