By my reckoning, from season four onward Gilligan was responsible for almost all of the really top-tier episodes. Others to go on that list that you didn't mention include "Paper Hearts," "Field Trip," and "Folie a Deux" (the latter is an utterly brilliant look at the two main characters and might be the most under-appreciated episode of the whole show).

Field Trip is probably my favorite episode, and I love Folie a Deux, too. I also like Wetwired because it has does something similar, but with the roles reversed. I loved Agua Mala, too, just because of how ridiculous it was. I thought Theef and Lord of the Flies (especially for the Jane Lynch cameo) were some other late greats in terms of MOTWs.

One of my favorite "funny" episodes is Arcadia, the one where they go undercover in the gated community. Pure Mulder and Scully :3:ness.

My best friend does freelance film work, and ever since she pointed out that the scene in Triangle where Scully runs through the FBI and has like three long conversations was one cut, it's been one of my favorites. The cinematography in that episode is gorgeous, and it's such an awesome concept.

As much hate as the later seasons get, season 6 is like primo MOTW for me. So many of those episodes are just fun as poo poo.

An episode that I rarely see mentioned that freaked the poo poo out of me when I saw it was Sanguinarium. It's unusually gory for an X-File and just something about getting put under anesthesia and having your doctor drill through your face with a loving laser or stabbing the poo poo out of you with a liposuction needle because they're possessed by witches is creepy as poo poo.

I think "Detour" is one of the better X-Files episodes that I don't hear people talk about much. My vote for worst episode goes to a tie between "Lord of the Flies" and "The Field Where I Died".

Detour is awesome. I think my candidates for worst episodes would be "3" and "all things," although I haven't watched either of them in years. "First Pirson Shooter" is a special kind of hilariously bad. That's the one where they get trapped in the video game and there's an evil glitchy hot woman with a gun. I unironically love that episode though. Really any time there are computers as more than just a search or word processor, it's pretty hysterical; "Kill Switch" comes to mind.

I also saw Home on its initial airing as like! a 14 year old. That was something :ohdear:

War of the Coprophages is awesome. There's a point where a "roach" crawls across the tv screen, and I was living with a small roach infestation at the time, so that episode freaked me out a bit. Great episode.

My first exposure to the show was the episode "Syzygy", which has as part of its plot Mulder and Scully's personalities being distorted by the supernatural whatever and making them get angry with each other over dumb reasons. I found them unpleasant without realizing they weren't normally like that and it wasn't until I saw some different episodes that I really got into it.

Yeah, "Syzygy" is a really fun episode if you already understand the characters, but it's definitely not a great one to start out on, haha.

The actress who played Nick's wife on Six Feet Under was the blind girl who could see through that serial killer's mind.

I tried to watch Twin Peaks and it just never grabbed me. I had heard it being compared to the X-files, so obviously I was interested. After the first few episodes, I felt like it was way too melodramatic and I didn't care at all about any of what was happening. It felt like a really slow, bad soap opera. I'm going to give it another shot now, though, if only to see David Duchovny cross-dressing.

The movie-length pilot episode has also been barring me from re-attempting to watch it.

What do you dislike about the music? I'm curious because I posted earlier that I'd forgotten just how good it is. It's perfect atmosphere music. I don't notice it most of the time, but when I do, I enjoy it.

The special effects are really good too. I just finished watching 'F. Emasculata' (young Dean Norris!) and it's quite gruesome.

Ugh, I forgot how gross that episode is. The blisters and whatnot are so nasty looking and well done.

I remember watching that episode and thinking, due to the name, that there would be a reveal that it only affected men for whatever science reason, Mulder would get it and Scully would have to find a cure. I think in the episode, too, only men got infected, but they never actually say that so it was probably just a coincidence. I dunno. I got pretty :tinfoil:-y while I was watching it last time.

Gotta do a rewatch. I might only do MOTW episodes, since they were always my favorite. I remember the mytharc getting really good around the time when the psychic chess kid shows up, though, and I liked the Scully in Africa episodes even though I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority on that. We'll see.

But I think the discussion of "when" isn't a very interesting one. To the extent that it exists, as others have mentioned I prefer when it is left in the background and not really discussed. My point about the retcon, as well as stuff like trust no 1 and all things, is that in those instances they make the story entirely about the relationship, even if they don't provide any answers. And they are terrible.

I totally agree. I'm just gonna say that I think people that watch the X-Files trying to figure out precisely when/if Mulder and Scully consummate their relationship are entirely missing the point of the show. There are so many other awesome aspects to the subject and the way the show is presented, and even their relationship, that it's kinda depressing to see someone's takeaway be "they totes bang in season 8." I think overanalyzing it kinda cheapens the great chemistry between them and the obviously deep relationship they end up having for each other, and that's why the episodes that bring it front and center don't work.

But shippers will be shippers, I guess.

I just started rewatching and remembered how great "Ice" is. That was my favorite episode for a long time. Also the girl in "Shadows" has a really goofy name. "LAUREN KYTE." They keep saying it, first and last name, over and over, too.

:allears: I love that one, Mrs. Paddock is one of the creepiest MOTWs in the series. The whole episode is really well done, especially since she ends up not even being the real monster compared to the motherfuckers she's exacting revenge on. You're pretty much on her side by the end of it.

e: In addition to LITERALLY SATAN, doesn't Bruce Campbell play a demon trying to make a half-demon baby in a later episode?

See, this is why I don't like it when monsters or villains or whatever you want to call them are brought back. It's never done well and any mystery about why they are the way they are is got rid of.

I don't remember the Squeeze sequel, Tooms, being that bad, although I haven't seen it since I burned through the whole thing like 3 years ago. Orison and Kitsunegari are pretty bad though, compared to the originals.

All this worst episode chat and no one mentions the mummy urn that summons swarms of house cats? Or the Stephen King Chuckie knockoff? Or the one where the two Kathy Griffins cause fights everytime they get near each other?

First Person Shooter is shameful though.

I actually like a lot of the late season MotW episodes, although I'm pretty easily entertained. Like I always liked that one with Doggett in the Boston subway system, even if it was a little bit of a rehash of Darkness Falls.

Yeah, Teso, Hell Money and Teliko are all kinda horrible to me, especially in the way they treat the cultures they're taking about. I like Arcadia as an even further westernized version of the Nepalese tulpa. Fresh Bones is cool if you consider voodoo non-american. Je Souhaite is pretty great for a later season comedy episode.

A lot of eps about non-western mythology are very much a product of their time and feel kinda wtf as a viewer in 2015. Lots of casual stereotyping and weird Mulder witticisms.

I think the reason that episode is getting such a positive response is more based on the overall concept, a creature with no self awareness, suddenly (and traumatically) gaining it, along with becoming a human and gaining spontaneous understanding human problems, and the opportunity that that poses as a means of discussing mortality, death, consciousness, futility, etc. Rather than "lol he has a funny name, best ep ever."

That said, I totally get how someone could not be a fan of that ep; this whole season has, as someone already said, been hugely different in tone from the original run.
