I was so happy when they tested that "trending now" graphic during commercials on the satellite feed. They put it on a black background which meant I could put it on anything I wanted and it would look totally legit

Reddit is like a forum, but threads move up and down based on an algorithm of time and score. A thread basically can't stay on the front page of an active subreddit for more than a day or so, and reddit.com is an aggregation of all the subreddits (subforums) you are subscribed, to. I've found the best subreddits to be the ones where there is just some niche thing that follows very specific rules. Here are some GIF related subreddits that I try to post wrestling GIFs to: r/breathinginformation - Mostly gifs of people appearing to trigger on-screen graphics r/perfectloops - Perfectly looped gifs (the Daniel Bryan infinite dropkick gif was the third top scoring thread of all time at one point). r/blackpeoplegifs - Gifs of black people. Everyone who participates is encouraged to pretend they are black. Imgur was actually made by reddit folks for reddit. As for your issue, just contact them. They are surprisingly quick to respond to issues.
