China and Somalia were about even before the war, so I imagine Somalia's just ahead right now because China took significant losses fighting Hindustan.

I'll be posting a state of the world soon, which will show our industry screen, POPs, budget, etc. But I'm going to do it after the National Assembly session, since I want everyone to make the most dangerous and uninformed decisions possible. :getin:

I'd say we've seen more than enough blood for a while. Gradually sphere, puppet and annex Bulgaria and those italian city-states if it can be done risk-free but otherwise, it's time to lean back a bit and turn inwards. Try to improve relations with China and seek a balance in Europe between the HRE and France.

Probably. Big navies generate acrazy military score.

Meta-wise, can anyone remember and point out when the Varangians stopped being a part of the Byzanti-Roman reign? I mean, back in the days they were the bomb, and for a long while they even had the entire military bureaucracy named after them. Then they just sort of... disappeared. And up to now I never really considered it, but isn't it very much the same thing that happened with the Varangians OTL? They came, they were grand, then they slowly fell into obscurity and disuse?

I think that the last time the Varangian Guard themselves (as opposed to the Committee of State named after them) were mentioned in an actual update was in early EU4, when we unlocked our second-tier infantry unit:

This was the end of the Varanangians as an independent military formation, although the nucleus of the guard remained as mostly ceremonial imperial bodyguards. Their numbers slowly dwindled as Constantinople was sacked repeatedly during the Deluge, so by the time of the fall of the Senate and the birth of the Commonwealth, they existed mostly on paper. They were formally abolished by Hypatia III, in her consolidation of the Commonwealth's new institutions.

Which was probably for the best, because if they had lasted until the reign of Alexios V, they probably would have all had their heads cut off by Noor Sallajer.

HRE is actually number 6 in score, so even if France bounces back, the HRE will be a GP too.

Is there any way we can go to bat for Hindustan against Marathas? We kind of owe them for absorbing tens of thousands of casualties just to distract China. That Saravanan Ramaiah letter was pretty :smith:.

Also making them bigger and stronger will mean they can absorb even more casualties when the Ming inevitably attempt to regain their place as pre-eminent world power! :unsmigghh:

I think Marathas has some Hindustan cores, so if we go to war with them (they still have Da Qin sphered) and have infamy to burn we could maybe try to force them to release some of them. And, of course, Hindustan is directly allied with us, so they'd hopefully call us directly into any wars they fight with Marathas.

Georgiana Sapoutizakis, Ninth President of the Byzantine Republic
Inaugurated March 19th, 1850

The Republic has won a great victory— perhaps the greatest victory since the heady days of Noor Sallajer. Now that we have proven ourselves the greatest nation in the world, we must consider what to do with this power. In addition, we must consider how to face those threats and challenges which still lie before us— the end of the Victorian League as we knew it, the presence of absolutist reactionaries on our very doorstep in Hungary, the possibility of a French resurgence, continued disunity in Italy, the Pretender Emperor in Rhodes, rivalry with China— the list goes on and on.

As, in this present era of good feelings, we are all— or almost all— ladies and gentlemen of the Capitolino, I am confident that this Assembly will be able to reach a consensus about our future plans in an organized, civilized, and cooperative way.

Thank you.

President Sapoutizakis sweeps out of the room. Everyone starts talking over one another immediately.

DAY ONE: THE FUTURE OF THE VICTORIAN LEAGUE

We must continue our unflinching support of the Holy Roman Empire. It is the morally correct course of action— were the Imperials true friends of ours, or simply tools to be discarded at our leisure? Brothers and sisters of Byzantium yearning for liberty from the hated de Valois-Vexin, or a cudgel to beat Versailles about the head with? Or, if only cool pragmatism moves you, consider the following— the Holy Roman Empire is a vigorous Continental ally, with a powerful presence on land. British landings across the Channel, while important for diverting French forces from other fronts, were never decisive on their own.
##Support the Exiled Russian Intellectual

Great Britain was the first true friend the Republic ever had— I'm sure everybody remembers the difficulties of the early years of the Republic, when nations like the Ayiti Federation allied or betrayed us according to their whimsy. That changed when Golden Revolution placed Victoria III on the throne and the world saw that the awakening of European liberty would not be confined to the ruins of Old Rome. Moreover, Great Britain is modern power— their power straddles two continents, their navy can compete with even the empires of Avalon, and their industrial capacity dwarfs that of even France. They are useful allies in war— their control over the North Sea allows them to strike at the heart of the Continent, whilst their home territories are entirely unassailable. They will prove a moderating influence on the world, rather than plunging half the world into wars against France every five years. And, as a true multinational society, in which Scots, English, and Welsh all peaceably share an island, they are a refutation to the ugly nationalism which seeks to overthrow our Republic.
##Support the Gentleman Physician

I don't see why this has to be such a big deal. It's not the first time we faced the prospect of being allied with two Great Powers simultaneously. You will remember that, early in her reign, Victoria III's Great Britain was not numbered among the great powers of the world, and the Republic pursued an alliance with the Somalian Republic. When Britain ascended to the status of Great Power, we, for a time, maintained an alliance with both them and the Somalians. Eventually, we issued a call to arms which the British accepted and the Somalians refused. Our alliance with Somalia ended, and our alliance with Britain endured. Let us again let things take their natural course and let fate decide the fortunes of the Victorian League.

Great Britain is one of the cradles of revolution and republican democracy. They have been steadfast and powerful allies. The Empire was an inconsequential rump state before the intervention of the League. If they deign to abandon our friendship and sacrifice in favour of pig-headed self importance, than on their head be it. With France contained and falling apart, we should no longer sully our values by associating with types who fancy themselves "emperors" anyways.

Besides, us and Great Britain share few conflicting spheres of influence. If good fences make good neighbors, then certainly oceans make the best of friends. We cannot abandon our ideals for convenience, and we should not waste such a mutually beneficial relationship as ours and Great Britain's.

The problem with that is that you're trusting Britain to help you. And that goes wrong exactly when you need it most. The Germans are much better allies in this case, at least they can be trusted to not gently caress up their troop managements massively and shipping units over to Ixachitlan or Nicholia or Mazula or whatever we're calling America in this LP, I always get these alternate names mixed up with the ones from the other LPs. They might seem competent now, but it's only a matter of time before they gently caress up royally. Never trust Great Britain in Victoria.

The Presidents of Byzantium may understand prestige, but they wouldn't be able to tell acquisition if it slapped them in the face. It's been over two decades and Byzantium has acquired a grand total of three or so provinces, one and a half states. Great Bulgaria still lives!

Howsoever prestige may set the order of the day of the 19th century the Chinese state will not meekly fall behind industrially forever. A time will come when the population of one's country, not simply the density of one's factories matters once more for one's economy, and come that day Byzantium will fall behind not only the Chinese, but also the Ayiti and the Haida.

Honorable President.
If we have won a great victory, where is our new territory to complement our booming prestige? The filling meat to that heady wine? Noor Sallajer, despicable muslim that she is, greatly enhanced our territory, bringing us satellite states and territory as well as prestige! Despised though her name may be her accomplishments were blessed!
I thank you for bringing us glory, but the other hand is EMPTY!

The true goal of Byzantium has been to weaken France, not build Germany. Where is our Helvetia? Where are our Mediterranean bases? All our wars have been won by wide margins, Germany did not truly need that strength, where our objectives could have been attained while strengthening Byzantium with total Alpine and Mediterranean Dominion! I charge you, and your predecessors with attaining infamy for naught but prestige and the expansion of a foreign ally, now so enlarged she may soon break free of our influence!

PS. Please don't listen to those fools begging for the expansion of Hindustan at the expense of Marathra at OUR cost. They are useful fools, nothing more.

OUR INFAMY = OUR LAND!
