It's probably not worth taking Cornac for that, because you'll be pushing 20 or more by the time you have the mana to actually use it effectively.

The specific track you want, based on a quick look at the source, is either Lords of the Sky or Through the Dark Portal.

She's going to run, and probably she will have a turn or two before she dies, so you could theoretically get between them and her if she can get a little distance and then tell her to wait so that she doesn't run forward into the inevitable Storm Giant boulderthrower/family of storm drakes/etc. that's probably further up the corridor. Also, you have Lightning, which is a beam attack - you could damage them all with one shot of that. Unfortunately, I doubt a Shadowblade has the magic to kill them in one shot - it'd be tough even for an archmage, necromancer, or anorithil to do that, but they could break out other beams/AoEs/etc. A Corruptor could just cast Pacification Hex on the guys close to her and probably have time to kill them all before it wore off. This would be a 100% fail situation for anybody but the classes that are adept at precisely targeted area attacks. Even then the orc pyromancer would mulch her instantaneously if he decided to target her instead of the player.

I ended up casting Illuminate to blind the orcs and then Shadow Stepping to the escort's side.

It would have worked, too, except that just offscreen in that screenshot there's five giants and giant thunderers.

With those odds, I think my only option would have been to hit her with Teleport and hope she landed near the portal.

But don't worry, you really don't need absolutely every possible advantage to win with a character most of the time. It sucks that you're losing an anorithil escort, but if you feel like getting back at the game for its bullshit then you can game the next escort you get. Escort class is randomly generated on the spot, so if you crash the game by ending the process you can go back to the beginning of the zone and reroll the class. Make that loremaster an anorithil! None of the loot or encounters will change, just the escort. I don't endorse doing this on a character you genuinely feel could win, since it cheapens it a little, but if you're just trying to learn the game it won't hurt anything.

Thankfully I already got Celestial/Light off another Anorithil, I was just hoping to be able to get +1 Healing Light for free.

Also, that trick won't work for me because I have it set to save every level transition rather than every zone transition, after a few crashes that cost me a bunch of progress.

Sandworm Heart is +1, Arena and Brotherhood are +2 each. So 49 total. Those are all the references I can find in the code.

On top of that, you can get some "bound" generic points in other ways; escorts give you up to +9 in various skills, and Antimagic, Fungus, and Cursed Aura trees each start with 1 point in them.

Something has gone badly wrong in the Ruined Dungeon.

In the northwest chamber, there's a 3x3 area where I take damage from the final guardian's Kinetic Aura. The guardian itself doesn't appear, though. It's not invisible - I can stand in the center of the aura without running into anything (and still take damage).

This isn't actually killing the dungeon for me because, as a Cursed, I can just hateport into the final room, but it is annoying. Nope, can't hateport into the final room even though I can see enemies in it. Looks like I'm not doing the ruined dungeon on this character.

I triggered a boss and was teleported with into some kind of weird hell-dimension. Despite pulling out all the stops, I bit it within three turns, losing my last life. This game... :negative:

That hell dimension is the Fearscape. You basically have three options for dealing with it:

- Wait it out. It's a sustain that also drains 5 vim/turn, so eventually they'll run out. If you stay alive until then, you'll be back in the real world and right next to them.
- Dispel it. As a sustain, if you can break the sustain, you'll be kicked out of the fearscape. I believe Disperse Magic works for this.
- Kill the caster. Depending on who it is this may be the easiest option or completely impossible.

Every turn that you're in the Fearscape you'll also be taking fire damage. So will your opponent, but if they're a demon or have the Flames of Urokh sustain, it will instead heal them.

If you unlock the tilebar and drag it hard against the side of the screen, it will glow green and "snap" into place; having done that, the game will try to avoid placing tiles under it, although it doesn't always succeed (I play with the tilebar on the right, under the map, and have had issues with half of the rightmost column getting cut off).

I have a lot of trouble with the Yeek early game, but a pattern I've settled into that usually works:

- start with the Ritch Tunnels. Play through to the third floor, but as soon as you enter it, leave - if you continue exploring it the Ritch Queen will probably one-shot you from outside your vision radius.
- clear Norgos' Lair. Carefully.
- finish the Ritch Tunnels.
- head to the Complex and Rod out as soon as you arrive, before you get into Z's aggro radius. Return much later and apply beatdowns.

Part of this may be that pre-1.2, careful shield management meant that low HP was rarely an issue.

It sounds like in 1.2, shields and especially shield spiking have been nerfed, making it much harder to just tank everything without letting it touch your HP.

How does a two-hander mindslayer work statwise? Beyond the Flesh lets you use Wil/Cun in place of Str/Dex for attacks, but it doesn't change the requirements to actually wield the weapon in the first place, so you need Str as well as Wil, Cun and Con, which leaves you stretched a bit thin. That was never an issue with psiblade mindslayers because of the different stat requirements for mindstars.

Pvt.Scott posted:

Not all my Yeeks are Zerkers. The only class I can get out of their starting area no problem is Summoner, for obvious reasons.

The Yeek starting island is kind of a pain. This is the approach I use, which doesn't always work but does seem to work more often than not.

First, hit the Ritch Tunnels. These are generally easier unless the map generator completely hates you, and there's lots of long narrow hallways with turns in them to bottleneck enemies or break line of sight. If you have ranged attacks, use them, because you are way too fragile to depend on melee. Use Dominant Will, too - it takes no time to cast and if it connects it's an automatic kill that also distracts other enemies. And there's no reason not to learn it because it's a prerequisite for Quickened.

Once you hit Ritch Tunnels 3, stop. If you keep poking around here the Ritch Queen will see you and her favourite hobby is one-shotting low level characters from outside their vision range. Leave and go to Murgol's Lair.

The Lair is harder, with traps and drowning to contend with as well as generally nastier enemies, but some of those enemies will be fighting each other, which takes some pressure off you. Go to the bottom and kill the boss, which is much easier than the Ritch Queen.

While you're doing this, put your stat points into Con. Maybe spare a point or two for other stats to unlock new skills as you level, but as a Yeek you're doubly hosed on hitpoints -- once from the racial HP value and again from your lovely starting Con. Triply hosed, if you're playing a class with an HP penalty. So you want to crank Con as soon as possible to at least partially compensate for that and reach the point where you aren't getting instantly killed by everything.

Now go back to the tunnels and kill the Queen -- or, if you're not feeling good about your odds, just bail, since you have the Rod of Recall now.

When you're done, go the mainland tunnel and activate the Rod to get to the world map without ever fighting Subject Z.

I'll test it on my work laptop on the bus home and let you know how it goes, it's a not-terribly-beefy netbook. 1.1 worked fine on it, though.

Weirdly, on my personal laptop -- which has a lovely video card but is extremely robust in every other respect -- it runs fine, but takes several minutes to start up. I have no idea why. It's not doing much of anything with the CPU in that time, and I can't imagine why it would be blocked on disk IO because the game simply isn't that big, even if it were loading the whole thing into memory. I haven't had a chance to test it on the work laptop yet, but I found out why it takes forever to start up!

It is blocked on network; it is, apparently, checking the Steam Cloud status of a great many save, vault, and charball files, including some that no longer show up in the game's save list and dozens that don't even show up in the Steamcloud sync directory.

I think 1.2 has horribly broken Steamcloud integration somehow.
