We need another 12 500 tons of shipping just to register as a blip on the U-Boat aces list. Onward and upward! :black101:

Now that we've hit most of the major mechanisms of the game (excluding one, although it ties in with another system we have already seen), what are people's thoughts on the game?

I alluded to this back in the board/wargaming thread, but I don't think I really agree with the persistence of some of the depth charge DRMs: using a G7a during the day and attacking from close range shouldn't persist past the first depth charge attack.

They'd make the destroyer way more likely to detect you during that first attack, and then if they do hit then they get the "previously detected" bonus that persists across multiple rounds, but I don't see why they should get the two bonuses on succeeding rounds. Similarly I don't think long range's -1 DRM should persist past the first attack.

On the realism front, I think that there should have missions covering the Sep-139 to Jun-1940 period, where U-boats would be transiting from Wilhelmshaven on through the Kiel Canal on the way to the British Isles: The second transit box is a little too sparse for the North Sea.

Tekopo! Thank you for the opportunity to be the first in your LP. That was a great run worthy of the Kriegsmarine. Maybe they'll name a flotilla after me someday.

Two ships sunk isn't bad for having to abort early, and we got that charmed boat despite its sudden escort. That's a few less Brits back home!

Did submarine crews really send their dead out the torpedo tubes?

I don't have my sources with me, but IIRC that's just melodramatic apocrypha that's been perpetuated by things like Star Trek and Hollywood takes on the U-boat. Men who on patrol were given burials at sea when it was practicable, but one should keep in mind that getting "partial kills" on a submarine was rare. If the depth charges find you, everyone goes down (or surrenders) with the boat.

That whole boats go down with everyone in it is also why the submarine service had proportionally higher rates of loss than, say, the infantry or the air force or even the regular navy.

Coming up with an update, but here's something very interesting concerning the pacific theater of operations. I'm not sure how they are going to make it so that you have a similar increase in difficulty though...

Yeah. This is a suitable level of exitement. Just enough to not have high command question why we aren't finding more ships to hurt the allied war effort. The fact that we have very little impact on the war under these circumstances is frankly immaterial.

It'd be the holy grail of submarine simulations to basically have the entirety of WW2 to be running in the background to give the player a chance of influencing history. Sink enough of the Royal Navy that the German pocket battleships and Bismarck get to run amuck! Destroy so many lend-lease ships going to Russia that the Germans can take Moscow and Stalingrad! Stop the Torch landings!

I mean, yeah, it'd be a monumental feat of wargame programming to pull off something that's essentially a screensaver/historical leaderboard, but it sure would be nice. Probably go well with a Silent War-type Grossadmiral Donitz Simulator too.

When would we seriously be firing both the fore and aft torpedo tubes at the same time? Besides in celebration of Victory, of course.

You're not firing them simultaneously - it's an abstraction of the U-boat firing its bow tubes first, then doing a 180 and firing its aft tube. We then take a penalty of 1 on the detection roll to represent the destroyer having a better idea of where we are because we took that extra time to shoot off the aft torpedo.

Still, we fired fourteen torpedoes on that patrol and only roughly 33% of them even hit, and even if they hit, 20% of them ended up being duds. That's pretty rough.

1941 gives you a 1/6 chance of getting a dud, so 20% isn't too far off the average.

If you were still in 1940 or earlier the G7A's would be duds a third of the time and the G7E's would be duds half the time (until Jul-1940 where their reliability gets to 1/3 like the G7A's)
