Does the sweeping actually do anything, or is it all a sham to make it look like a team sport (like quidditch)?

quote:

Sweeping is done for two reasons: to reduce friction underneath the stone, and to decrease the amount of curl. The stones curl more as they slow down, so sweeping early in travel tends to increase distance as well as straighten the path, and sweeping after sideways motion is established can increase the sideways distance. When sweeping, pressure and speed of the brush head are key in slightly increasing the layer of moisture that builds up under the stone.

They's basically manual zambonis to keep the rock going straight.

So what they are really doing is compressing the ice to make is smoother, right?

I don't think it's compressing, so much as melting a bit of it.

When they make the ice sheet, they spray it with water to give it a pebbled texture, that's what makes the stones curve.

The Scots. Probably because it was too cold to golf and still wanted an excuse to get drunk with their friends.

It was invented by a bunch of drunk Scotsmen like 500 years ago, probably as a way to make winters less boring and of course Canada fell in love with it because their winters too were boring and booze plentiful.

Get your rocks closer to the center than the other team's, or use your rocks to block the other team from getting their rocks closer to the center than yours. Or just knock the other team's rocks out of the target.

Brushing slowly wears down the pebble, producing a smoother surface, similar to how you burnish a hairy scrotum to get that smooth shine. A smoother surface means less friction.

The stone is sliding forward, so less friction means less energy lost and a harder impact with other rocks.

The stone is also rotating as it slides, so less friction means less 'grip' for the rotation to cause the stone's path to curve. Imagine a Japanese guy doing the helicopter on a gonzo porno, it's the same thing.

So if you want the stone to slow down and curve ("curl") in the direction it's rotating, don't brush. Once you're happy with its path and speed, brush like crazy to keep it going straight and fast.

Other strategy involves the direction you initially throw it, how hard you throw it (referred to as 'weight'), how fast you spin it when you let go, and whether you want it to stop short to guard future shots, knock another stone out of the way (maybe a guard put there by the other team), or try to get close to the center of the 'house' (the circle) so you can actually win.

I'm a Canadian who prefers curling over hockey.

Only with curling can you sit in front of the tv and get into drunken heated arguments with family members over the holidays while furiously poiting and drawing lines across the screen and yelling out what yellow/red should or shouldn't do.

Curling encourages audience participation, because it's the ultimate "I can do that, I just don't wanna" sport - where everyone watching can plot exactly what the teams should do (and get furiously pissed when they try and fail at doing so) without having the slightest bit of ability to do it themselves.
