he fit well with Colbert and played along well with him. He never got the full on sidekick role like Max Weinberg when Andy was gone, but he played beautifully and was able to do side projects for himself during the show, which is a big sign that he and colbert were cool.

I loved Max's whole thing, but hearing Andy poo poo talk him about the whole Jay/Conan fiasco on the Comedy Bang Bang! podcast really soured me on him as a person. I don't think it was a bit; Andy seemed to just be laying everything out, and it suddenly made a lot more sense that Max never came back after they floated the whole "he's playing on Springsteen's tour" story.

As for Jon, I'm gonna miss the camera cutting to his confused face during some of the monologue bits. He did a solid WTF expression to punctuate some of the stuff Colbert was covering. Colbert was pretty gracious at least in his handover of the band to Louis, who definitely seemed like he was more comfortable with his banter than Jon was at first. It'll be interesting to see if/how the music changes.

The gist is that Max was more than willing to basically try to play both sides and stick around even after Conan was ousted. He goes into a little bit of detail on it and the whole Jay/Conan saga on this episode of the show here: https://www.earwolf.com/episode/the-four-questions/ (the Max bit starts at about 9-1/2 mins in).

I really dug Al Franken on Kimmel last night. Not only was his monologue a nice gloves off series of rips into the right (in particular Ted Cruz), but his inversion of the tired man-on-the-street bit where everyone he asked knew all about the Senate was pretty great too.

Hah. Conan O'Brien did a surprise drop in at Comedy Bang Bang here in Charlotte tonight, saying he was shooting a secret project in town. What could that be? I'm stoked as it's a big accidental get for the burgeoning comedy festival my brother has put together here.

Hope everyone had a great 9/11 Day, we're back for another shortened week. Happy Emmys night! You'll notice that Colbert, Kimmel, and Seth are reruns tonight. They were all at the Emmys tonight, nominated for Outstanding Variety Talk Series (all walked into the buzzsaw that is Last Week Tonight.) Fallon didn't have to worry about being there, so him and Corden are the only new shows tonight. He has Fred Armisen on Thursday, but don't think that means he's going to pop upstairs and do his job for a few nights and lead what's left of the 8G Band (he isn't.) Speaking of them, apparently Marnie Stern is out of the band. She's been missing for about 6 months and they never gave any explanation. Then last week bassist Syd Butler was missing, hopefully he returns soon; Karina Rykman filled in for him last week.

Also, while Colbert is a new show Tuesday, it appears to be a bank show, that is, it's primarily compiled of bits they previously filmed. There are no formal guests, and two "Colbert Questionert" segments with Robert De Niro and Ethan Hawke, both of which were shot when they appeared back in June and July, respectively. The musical guest is St Vincent, which was very likely shot during her residency in July. Hopefully he does a fresh monologue. Last Thursday's show was taped earlier in the week, I wonder if he will tape Thursday's show earlier in this week.

Couple thoughts I've had recently

The Late Show officially has no dedicated pianist for the first time since the franchise began in 1993

To the best of my knowledge, Louis Cato is the third guitarist to take over after the original bandleader departed in a late night show—Kevin Eubanks took over from Branford Marsalis on the Tonight Show in 1995, and Jimmy Vivino took over from Max Weinberg in the Conan lineage (though not technically the same show) in 2010. Fourth if you count GE Smith on SNL, but I don't because the entire band save Leon Pendarvis was replaced in 1985, and also SNL is a different thing altogether. I cannot verify this as solid fact because I don't know the full history of more obscure late night shows pre-1990 like Cavett, Sajak, Rivers et al.

I saw him at a local casino a few years after he left The Late Late Show and he was pretty funny, but a lot of his act is terribly old fashioned and I found myself wishing he'd brought Geoff with him and just riffed for the hour, 'cause using the same cringy "Indian Casino" joke he told in his final ever interview (with Jay Leno no less) ain't nearly as funny as just riffing with Josh was, but he's still a legend and his delivery and enthusiasm are so infectious as to make up for everything else.

Parakeet vs. Phone

I saw him a few years ago on the Hobo Fabulous tour and he's still good. That routine at least was mostly story telling and weaving jokes together across the set. It was closer to his monologues. The biggest change on the last tour was Craig kind of leaning into acknowledging that he's just playing shows for the old fans now at smaller venues.

As a heads up, Hobo Fabulous is on Amazon Prime and apparently Tubi and Pluto if JustWatch isn't lying. He did a kind of interesting 6-episode documentary that's clips of his show cut in with light documentary stuff about the tour and comedy. He tends to talk and then play footage from the relevant jokes. Some interesting self-reflection on his jokes and one very white-knuckle part about whether audiences have gotten oversensitive. Turns out fine, but with a comedian that's always a scary question :). Maybe skip it if you've got tickets and don't want to risk seeing jokes that may still be a part of his set live.

One interesting bit that came to mind is that he covers the previous tour in Hobo Fabulous and mentions that it was awful. That he felt like he was just repeating old material and that his energy was way off, and even though audiences were still okay with it, he canceled it partway through because he felt like he was a hack that needed to rewrite his material. Wonder if that was the tour you saw.

I know this thread isn't super active, but I'm surprised the news that Trevor Noah is leaving The Daily Show didn't make a bigger splash here. There's no timetable, no replacement, none of that yet, but he did make it formal on-air, so it sounds pretty definitive, whenever it does happen.

I also know the show was divisive, and I never felt like it even came close to Jon's tenure, but it definitely was something I enjoyed having on (if not actively watching) four nights a week - moreso than whatever Colbert's become - and there was that brief window during the no-audience Times Square version of the show that I really dug the format they were trying, the 45 minute length and the extended interviews that Trevor was doing.

Whatever happens to the show, I'll watch the follow-up (my assumption is that Jordan Klepper will probably get the offer? Maybe Lenard McKelvey takes over in a way like he tried with his original format that sorta stepped away from the Charlamagne label?), and I'm hoping that maybe a refreshed writer's room and delivery will help the show find a tone that's a little more biting than it has been. It's telling that the bits where Trevor does his off-the-cuff commentary have more teeth to them than the scripted stuff, and I'm tired of everyone pussy-footing around some of the truly heinous poo poo happening without there being a little fire behind the response.

In other news, my Jackal mug came last week, and I love it. Thanks for reminding me that it was finally available, pwn!

"Life unworthy of life" (German: Lebensunwertes Leben) is a pragmatic liberal designation for the segments of the populace which they view as having no right to continue existing, due to the expense of extending them basic human dignity.
To be blunt, nobody here is talking about it because the show is pretty much completely irrelevant on the late night scene.

I say this as someone who fell in love with Trevors standup and audiobooks. I always saw him as a remarkable talent with a unique perspective and a skill for making extremely sad and traumatic stories very funny without softening harsh truths to make the audience comfortable. For all its posturing, biting satire is absolutely not a regular feature of The Daily Show these days. It is clearly written for a disproportionately affluent, young audience and it shows. Even worse, Last Week Tonight made biting, unflinching satire more normal, so TDS looks kind of cowardly in comparison.

From my understanding, Noah has been doing stand up in NY for as long as he's been working the show,. As in his schedule is that he finishes filimg the episodes and immediately starts working at clubs after work. So hopefully we'll see more interesting projects that make better use of his talents in the future.

The bigger issue that you're alluding to is The Daily Show itself and how stale the writing has gotten. It feels like the program has been resting on its laurels since the ratings peaked in 2011-2012, resulting in a comedic voice that feels very dated and out of touch with the younger demographic that used to hold up the show. Like you noted, the satire lacks any bite, the simple formula of showing politicians contradicting themselves and ranting about deep dish pizza absolutely does not hold up. I really hope that some introspection happens there and they don't just blame the host. I think Stewarts output since he has left the show suggests that the stagnant, out of touch writing would have been even more pronounced had he stayed on.

TDS format needs to change to a degree. If you understand that both Kilborn and Stewart's Daily Show's were send ups on current news trends and broadcasts in makes more sense. Noah's team never really adapted that way, so the parody element is lost.

As much noise as Jon made about getting off "bullshit mountain" post-escalator, I don't think his style of ranting incredulously at the camera would have worked particularly well for the Trump era.

I wonder what kind of show Colber' imagined he would be making, since they all assumed Hillary would win. Satirizing Trump and his orbitals a la the Repor' would not have really worked*, I guess he found his audience by just venting his spleen nightly and commiserating with a certain crowd? At least it did wonders for his ratings.
