X-O posted:Somehow even when a lot of people are either at a loss or just repeating the same tired cliches, Conan always seems to be able to articulate the right thing for the moment. actually, his response forms a really nice triptych with Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers responses. Conan speaks from the perspective of an entertainer, Kimmel from the perspective of a Vegas native (his inability to hold back his tears was really obvious and very heartbreaking), and Meyers from a pissed-off activist. I think Meyers' is the most to the point; he addresses the congresspeople directly, but not in a "you need to do something way" but in a "just be loving honest with us" way. there's no plea for his viewers to talk to their congresspeople, there's no call to action, just asking anti-gun control politicians to drop the bullshit and admit that events like this are just the price we are going to have to pay because of their fervor for the second amendment. it is really depressing that i could make an incredibly accurate "late night massacre/tragedy address" bingo card filled with various cliches from all of the various responses from hosts on different days after different disaster. also, god bless Jimmy Fallon for being the most oblivious lameass clown and opening not with a monologue about bravery of first responders, reflections on the nature of late night talk shows and their ability to communicate after a tragedy, or pleas to take action, but (and i swear to god this is real because i pinched myself after watching it and it is not just my fever dream) Miley Cyrus singing a Dido song accompanied by Adam Sandler so you know what, Jimmy Fallon wins the "make me laugh the most in the face of tragedy" prize this evening, because nothing could top the sheer absurdity of Miley Cyrus and Adam Sandler solemnly covering a Dido song at the top of a coward's late night talk show.

Watermelon Daiquiri posted:Kimmel is hollywood. Fallon is decidedly NYC due to SNL and friends. They had already been hyping miley cyrus for all of this week due to her new single/album/ep/whatever, but i have no idea where sandler fits in he's got a movie coming out, apparently it's an actual dramatic performance as opposed to... whatever it is Adam Sandler has been doing for the last 8 years

Steve Vader posted:Corden's battle rap skits are getting their own show, Drop The Mic, a la Lip Sync Battle. Could it be any clearer that he was basically just told to "be Jimmy Fallon?" this is extra funny being being Jimmy Fallon is really not helping Jimmy Fallon. quote:The current late-night “war” is certainly less vitriolic than the previous David Letterman vs. Jay Leno Battle Royale. Stephen Colbert and the Jimmys Fallon and Kimmel are all buddy-buddy, with significantly less mud-slinging. But that will never be the case with their respective television networks—the ratings battle will always live on, and it looks like Fallon is in a bit of trouble for the moment.

Rupert Buttermilk posted:It's either Part 3 or the Swamp edition that has about 7-8 slams in a row against Alex Jones. It was so good. I think 'Shrieking Funnel Cake' might be my favourite. Alex Jones is very deserving but I think the person that got the most consistent laughs for me was Attorney General and Confederate House Elf Jeff Sessions.

Die Sexmonster! posted:poo poo, was season 5 that bad? Been distracted from finishing my rewatch of S4. I've always said that it's impossible for a new piece of work to retroactively make the thing it's continuing worse but boy i get the feeling that Arrested Development Season 5 is gonna put that theory to the test

Harminoff posted:Not exactly a late night talk show , but Trevor Moore (of Whitest Kids U'Know) has a new weekly talk show on comedy central youtube. First episode is out and is pretty great! how long has that fuckin' lie detector guy been bumming around hollywood, i swear every single time any show ever needs a lie detector, it's this one dude. also love how they low-key revealed that lie detection is bullshit but just keep it around for the jokes edit: i think Trevor Moore is great but man this format is not his strength. he naturally has an absurdist slant and "basically a talk show/podcast" is not something i want to see him doing. edit: my original point stands but it's pretty hilarious to have a woman named after a Transformer who is starting a weird robot brothel giving someone the "you're nuts" side-eye for being a furry. It's almost worth it to expose that woman to something just as crazy as she is DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 05:32 on Aug 10, 2019 |

pwn posted:Seconding the need for the full story. Pretaped? You mean they recorded a whole show without an audience for some reason, then had y’all watch the recording and provide reactions? When was this? Who was in the episode? I desperately want to see this show. they probably didn't know it was gonna be a pre-tape when they put the tickets out to request, so by the time they knew there wasn't gonna be a show, the options were either "tell everyone the show's off and disappoint them" or "have everyone come in and still get to meet/shoot the poo poo with Colbert while watching the episode they were supposed to see live"

Spuzzz posted:I think Seth Meyers is going full socialist. yo for real he's been doing some amazing work over the last few weeks, props to him and his writing team. Ever since the protests have started he's repeated the fact that the police are the ones causing the violence, the protests are peaceful and beneficial, the policing system in this country is racist and broken, and never once done that lovely "but also I must condemn riots/looters/people who get too angry" bullshit that many liberals think they have to hit to stay "neutral". Yesterday's clip about defunding the police came from the perspective of "if you're a democrat who is trying to workshop a new slogan for police reform, shut the gently caress up and step back" and didn't try to explain what activists and organizers "are really trying to say", he just used clips of them saying what they want (to take money away from the police) and why they want it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV5srZTCX9k this clip is particularly good, but all of his "A Closer Look"s since the protests have started are worth watching. He's still not the funniest host, and I think he finds his Trump voice funnier than it really is, but there are some good jokes in there too, particularly at Fucker Carlson's expense. edit: also you should watch this, it's Amber Ruffin (holy poo poo she was the first black woman to write for a late night network talk show in 20-loving-14) telling stories of her encounters with the police over her life, it's really good and her personal stories provide a good counterbalance to Seth talking at a distant overview level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o6OEyfuJU8 DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 06:25 on Jun 12, 2020 |

https://youtu.be/fC6YujtCtG4 I’m not gonna pretend that she’s got Streep-esque range or anything but this T-Swift bit is cute and she does it without breaking, which is very impressive once she brings out the Colbert-themed Vision Board Also a call-back to the Report!

Walt Disney-looking motherfucker Edit: that John Mulaney segment is very sweet and I’m very happy for him and also the entire time I watched that video on YouTube a thumbnail from one of John’s previous appearances (with the sunglasses and trench coat) sat in view and I thought to myself “oh that’s clearly someone on a cocaine bender how did I not see that before” and the final segment was just him and Seth saying exactly that about those very pictures DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 09:50 on Sep 8, 2021 |

I wish Seth would use the opportunity of having New York’s latest fail-mayor on to push him on all of the horrendous things Adams has said and done since taking office (the thing I saw today was that he got rid of a bunch of people investigating massive sick leave fraud at Rikers because prison guards are cops at heart and obviously Mayor Cop is gonna stick up for one of his own) But of course he is still a rich media guy at heart. They’ll make a joke about him being a “vegetarian” and ignore him being a real piece of poo poo

Sir Lemming posted:I do miss the variety of bits on the Late Show -- lately it's almost always just "Meanwhile" -- but I might be in the minority there. It probably works better to add color to a full-length show that people actually watch, on TV, rather than something to catch later as clips on YouTube. And I'd hardly call any of his bits true classics. But in theory, I'd like more. Colbert still shines in pre-recorded bits, such as the one not too long ago with Paul Rudd auditioning for sexiest man alive. I feel like one of those a week would be a good place to start. I love Jokes Seth Can’t Tell. It’s got an almost vaudevillian pattern to it, which is really nice because the rest of the show is so topical and current. I also think there are a whole lot more bits on his show that are mostly done to make him and the crew laugh (including Corrections, which blossomed into its own glorious thing but is also not actually part of the show). edit: I think why I like Meyers so much is that his show (or more accurately, the parts of his show I watch on YouTube) is basically 50% frustrated yelling about politics and 50% dumb bits to make his friends laugh, which is what I really truly want out of most comedy. I feel like(/hope) the second Jon Stewart himself showed up for Roy it was over, it feels like an endorsement. He’d arguably be a better continuation of Stewart’s legacy than Trevor Noah was. I’m sure he doesn’t have any official say but they’d be stupid not to take it into consideration. edit: if it’s not Roy it should be Chelsea Handler, I liked her during the Chelsea Lately era and she’s much meaner now DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 01:36 on Apr 6, 2023 |

You can really tell the difference between who has hosted poo poo and who hasn’t in these Daily Show weeks. No offense to Kal or John or Sarah but they didnt quite have the rhythm developed the way that all the Daily Show people. Same reason Ken Jennings was a better Jeopardy host than everyone else.

GreenNight posted:Colin Jost, you're the next white guy up. Jost would be loving awful at late night. Fallon is awful and obnoxious but he developed a lane for himself and that lane fit pretty well into the late night mold (sycophantic, lots of goofy games). I’m sort of surprised that alcohol doesn’t play an even bigger role in that article, I feel like it was not long ago that everyone was speculating that Fallon was gonna lose his job and that he busted his hand while drunk instead of whatever excuse he gave publicly

I get the feeling that Fallon isn’t much of a leader or manager because he’s never really needed to be in the same way most hosts of late night shows have been. Seth, Steven, Conan, even Kimmel all had experience running/producing shows prior to being hosts. Jimmy was never head writer of a room in the way those guys were (Fey was the head writer while he was at SNL and none of his attempts at film stardom were his babies) and it feels like Lorne has a heavier hand on Tonight than in the past, so he’s sort of just a figurehead.

Djarum posted:Lorne never had any control over the Tonight Show before Fallon. It was Carson Productions during the Carson years, Big Dog which was Leno and the Conaco which is obviously Conan. When Fallon took over it became another Broadway Video production which NBC is not happy about. Yeah, that’s what I meant but I worded it poorly. Carson, Leno, Conan, all had their own production companies but Fallon doesn’t (I mean now he does but it took a long rear end time) because it’s a Lorne thing. Late Night is also but Meyers was a head writer at SNL for forever and just generally seems like a very good boss by the standards of Hollywood
