Oh boy look at that badass dragon. Yeah that is a logo alright.

Hey it is moderately more readable than the Ultima 7 font!

BANE OF THE COSMIC FORGE

The sixth Wizardry game!
Let's see what the Wiki says.

Wikipedia posted:

Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge (originally known as Wizardry: Bane of the Cosmic Forge) is the 6th title in the Wizardry series of role-playing video games. It was the first in the trilogy surrounding the Dark Savant, which was followed by Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant and Wizardry 8. It was developed by Sir-Tech Software, Inc. and was released on the Amiga and DOS platforms in 1990 by the same company, and for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1995 by ASCII.

Although based upon previous games in the series, David Bradley completely rewrote the system for this release. This was the first game in the series to feature full color graphics.[1] The game was mouse-driven and ran with EGA graphics. It was also one of the few games in the Wizardry series that would not allow characters to be imported from previous games. The character creation and level-up process was more detailed than in previous releases. The player can choose from eleven races and fourteen professions.[2] There are multiple skills divided into several categories, and magic is divided into six schools. Combat also allowed several different options, such as thrust or bash, depending on the weapon selected.[3]

Clockwise from upper left: conversation with a dead wizard; the party in combat with Night Gaunts; sample character view screen; trading with an Amazon merchant.
Wizardry VI is a first person, tile-based and menu-driven RPG. Its monsters and races are made up of many mythological creatures and people, from the fictitious, to even some real life races and people. The player may meet Sirens and Charron from Greek mythology, the Amazulu (a group of African warrior women, whose tribal name is derived from the Amazons of Greek legend, and the Zulu of Africa), and even the Caterpillar from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

Well now, doesn't that sound interesting? IT SURE DOES I THINK.
This is gonna be a mostly blind LP. I have done a couple of the floors of the first area but other than that I know almost nothing. I am doing this because of a couple of factors.
Firstly, the game is available on GOG.com. I had only played Wiz8 previously (and not legitimately, I must say). The game comes bundled with the seventh in the series
http://www.gog.com/game/wizardry_6_7

Secondly, this program.

Hee-lo-ho!
Well now, we can't. Because we do not have a party. We need to generate one. Here are the things. We can be

HUMANS. You know, regular people things, I guess. These seem to be the human portraits available.

Elves. Pointy eared things. I have an elf blademaster in Might and Magic X. I dunno. They are elvish.

Dwarves. Shorty, stocky, and I always imagine them with a Scottish accent. I guess they use axes or something.

Gnomes and Hobbits: Ones are tinkerers and illusionists with a fondness for Turnips in Baldur's Gate, the others are short and have hairy feet. I have no idea if I put some of the Gnome portraits in the Dwarf section but eh whatever. Hobbits also like to have 5 meals per day.

Faeries: Winged things. THey are things. Yes.

Lizardmen: Lizard folk. Scalies. Reptiloids.

Dracon: I am gonna assume it's some sort of dragon thing. Portrait looks like a bug to me though.

These may still be humans, but maybe they are the Dracon and the previous one is also a Lizardman. Not sure though.

Rawulf: Dog furrypeople.

Felpurr: Cat furrypeople

Mook: Chewbacca furrypeople

Also a portrait of a Grim Reaper can be chosen.

Any character of any race can have any portrait, as far as I know. It is funny that way.

The characters can have also a profession! Look at this list:
Fighter: They fight things. I guess they beat people to a pulp with melee weapons
Mage: They mage things. They blow up things utilizing magical powers of mighty things. Wizards, you might say
Priest: They priest things. Bah that is getting old, in any case I guess they are clerics of some deity that beat things up and use magic for other things.
Thief: They can steal things and quite likely deal with horrible traps that will murder the entire party several times over because they pay attention to the environment and or things.
Ranger: As far as I know, Wiz 6 does not take place on foresty areas, but I guess they are bow users. I guess. I am not certain.
Alchemist: They try to turn base metals into gold, as a metaphor for the improvement of oneself and the transformation of base matter into higher things. No idea.
Bard: They swill beer, and sing. Songs are important for morale you know.
Psionic: Big brains. Psychic powers!
Valkyrie: FEMALE-ONLY class. Sounds better than a regular fighter I must say.
Lord: I guess this is the male equivalent? Though it sounds less badass than the divine takers of the slain in the battlefield.
Bishop: Old religious farts of high ranking. Do they come with a funny hat? I have no idea
Samurai: I guess they are into hanzo steel
Monk: They do kung fu
Ninja: They dress in black, or alternatively, in very colored garbs.

We need six characters.

Names, races, classes and portraits are required for FOUR more characters.

Part 2: Character creation and party

Let's create a bunch of assholes.

CAT BARD. STERV, coming from a line of people with feline qualities, STERV chose the path of the Bard as his profession. Following some sort of ad in the last tavern that ran him out for singing the SONG OF HIS PEOPLE, he finds himself at the doors of adventure.
Or horrible death. That can happen, too.

STERV did not get such a good roll, with the stats shown there being the baseline catfurry statistics.
Strength, Intelligence, Piety, Vitality, Dexterity, Speed and Perception, with Karma being special, which shall be seen later. Let's see what the Bard looks like.

Bards are not front line combatants, so STERV gets little strength. With any luck he won't get hit too much. Lute players need dextrous hands and fingers though, so that goes there. Though I have no idea how a cat person could properly play a stringed instrument if they have pad-like structures in the hands.
Or not. I dunno.

The Karma roll could've been better! But it'll do, I guess. Karma is rolled AFTER points have been allocated.

God drat, Sterv did not get poo poo in the skill points. Let's give him one in throwing at the moment.

He's really good at music though, but his hp and stamina are poo poo. Also let's give him some oratory (well, bards need to negotiate things! Maybe that is why he got ran out of them taverns) as well as a bit of legerdemain.
No, I am not implying that catpeople swindle and steal poo poo. Why would I need to imply that?

Next: DETPOPE, the DEATH POPE. Clerical being of great power, and skeletonicity. DETPOPE, being otherworldly, is in front of the Castle, in search of the fabled Cosmic Forge (more on that later). He joins with the party in order to acquire such a thing and utilize it.

A slightly better roll! Though it does not show the entire list of things that he could be. Let's make him a Bishop, which is clearly a status lower than what his name would indicate.

He needs to be rather pious, to be a pope don't you think? No, I don't think so, no, but we need high piety here.

12 Karma. Could've gone better

Ah, yes, magic. I forgot to screenshot how many bonus points he got, but eh, does not matter.
Also, for being a goddamn pope, 3 hp? What.
That is "get sneezed at and die" range! I guess becoming some sort of horrible grim reaper being has its drawbacks.

Ah, the magic selection screen. Both the Water spells available are appropriate for a horrible spooky dwarven grim bishop reaper. There were several spells that could've been chosen.
Fire school had: Energy Blast
Water had: Chilling Touch and Terror
Earth had : Armor Shield and Direction
Mental disciplines had: Sleep
That is on level one though. Let's see what else is available once we have chosen Chilling TOuch.

Yes. THat.

Bless and charm, eh?

Oooh that's more like it. A grim reaper would go for making them, but we need HEALTH.

Yes. That is fine.

MONMOON, the Elf Otherkin SHUT UP MOM I AM A RAWULF GOSH!

drat! That was a good roll! MONMOON could be whatever he wants!

He is a psychic thing. Yes. Max intelligence? Yes please. Should've made him faster, I guess.

That works. He does not shave, for a reason.

Mental attack it is!

Also sleep. Sleep is really important. Insomnia sucks, you know?

TINKLEE, the diminutive Faerie Monk. Who said sprites could not be martial artists? She ran away in order to become all she can be, and become the absolute puncher.

She packs a wallop! Also, she is more durable than the goddamn skeleton.

Ayup.

And yeah why not, let's give her some Ninja skillz. You never know when that is gonna be useful.

Uh
what the gently caress is Kirijutsu. Also she follows Madam Blavatsky.

Better punching.

Hailing from other lands, SNAKE, the ninja. His Snake is Solid, not naked. Hm. Should've gone with Raiden then.
Not Rules of Nature Raiden though.

THat looks more or less balanced to me.

: "Kept you waiting, huh?"

Huh, he is skileld in hands and feet? Okay. I would've thought swords or daggers but that's fine.

Skilled in the art of flipping out, though he is not particularly stealthy.

Let's make him a bit more of a rogue. Even though he is an rear end in a top hat loner with massive ptsd.

TINYSAN, the Hobbit Samurai. Eschewing pastoral tranquility for the way of the Sword, this particular Halfling finds himself in a quest to prove himself.
Also, he still likes 5 meals a day.

GOD drat that is a bad karma roll.

He is samurai.

He follows the way of the sword.

And with that we have a party. Let's organize it.

TINKLEE and TINYSAN will be the frontliners, since they are skilled in physical things. DETPOPE is a caster, Snake... Well I don't know yet. We'll see. STERV is a utility class and he will throw poo poo, so being behind is better for him. MONMOON is a caster. Positioning matters!

Oh
uh.
DRM?

This is the universal password (no it isn't)

It worked. We can go in.

: "The ad in the tavern said this was abandoned! Felpurr not liking this one bit!"
: "THE FLYER SAID CLEARLY 'DANGEROUS WORK. ' IT IS FAR TOO LATE FOR YOU TO BACK DOWN FROM THIS. I WOULD NOT ALLOW IT."
: "This is a procure on site mission, correct? "
: "As far as I know, this is a 'bring your own gear' mission. So I did."
: "Figures. "

"Small scampering noises echo down far distant corridors, a reminder that it is you who are the intruder here..."

And now the party is inside the Castle. What waits for them there?

Update 3: Actual gameplay!

Very well, we started a new game, but we had nothing to see or say about it just then. Character generation was done and the first step was taken, but nothing was accomplished ingame. Let's see if we can change that today.

BUT ALSO, GRID CARTOGRAPHER. Seriously, I cannot state how great this thing is.
As far as I know, doors in Wizardry are edge based. So, let's use that. If you have any interest on playing old (or not so old) first person dungeon crawlers, this thing is a godsend.

AND IT HAS A KEYBOARD MODE. So you can just alt+tab out of it and do things really fast with just a few keystrokes. I find that it works better this way.

It is quite flexible. Seriously, the best thing since graphing paper. There are several possible configurations, with this blueprint one being the default. I'll show other configurations after this post.

ANYWAYS, let's go back to Wizardry.

I am really glad that GOG removed the DRM.

Well, there is no turning back. The door is closed.

So, let's set that up. Door closed. Locked. Impassable for the moment.

So instead let us map this place a little while. Right now we have no cardinal direction indicator. The compass has no needle.

So, the only way to get our bearings at the moment is through the map.

: "NO ONE THOUGHT OF BRINGING A COMPASS? WHAT KIND OF ADVENTURERS ARE YOU? "
: "A compass is neither a sword nor a snack. Thus I brought neither."
: "I have natural sense of direction! We are, uh... Facing south! It smells like south!"
: "It smells like mold, dust, stone and decay."
: "LET'S ALL JUST SEE WHAT IS BEYOND THIS ENTRANCE. WE MIGHT FIND SOMETHING THAT WILL BE OF MORE USE THAN YOUR LACK OF PREPARATIONS."
: "I really thought this was supposed to be a procure on site mission."

: "Hrng, it's locked."

And here we have our first locked door. We can unlock them through several means. We can force it with a strong character, or we can try to pick it.

This is what it looks like. Snake cannot pick it. You need to press Enter as many times as there is a colored square. If the square stops in green, it is a success. If all stop in green, the door is open.
Snake does not get anything but red. We can't pick doors just yet.

: "I... I can't do it."

So instead let us try to force it.

: "Make way, pipsqueak. Let me show you how a REAL FIGHTER does it."

Similarly, in this case we have two bars, the top bar is fluctuating wildly, while the lower bar is static. The lower bar indicates the resistance of the door. The upper one, well, the force that is being used to force it. TINKLEE is rather strong (18, I think?) so it is not difficult.

I still almost fail at it though, if it matches it, it opens. If it exceeds it, it opens, but if the red bar is longer, well, it remains closed.

Oh boy. Ten animated, flesh eating plant things.

Let's see what can be done.

Snake can be sneaky, hide, and then try to punch people from the shadows. He IS a stealth operative, after all.

... Punches? What?

At least he was moderately effective.

: "My body is a weapon."

poo poo. He has ONE point left of unlife.

: "THIS SHALL NOT REMAIN UNCONTESTED."

So, let us make use of one of his magic spells. He has 4 magic points. One can choose what level/strength the spell can use, having stronger effects, and a higher cost in magic.

DETPOPE is hurt, so let's use it on him.

Ah, this. THis is something I should've done before.

See that?
He is naked.
EVERYONE IS NAKED. You need to manually equip ALL THE STARTING GEAR. I wandered into the first encounter naked. That is not good.

: "Weapons are for those that have not mastered discipline over one's own body."
: "Having armor on would be safer."

So let's give TINYSAN his weapons.

: "Prepare to taste Hanzo Steel, vegetable interlopers!"

Yeah. That is better.

Now, with the proper equipment, Tinysan gets two possible attacks. I don't think thrusting a sword would be effective against plant tentacles, but swinging might do the trick.
I like the detail that it shows what they have on their hands. Little details.

Snake is still in the shadows, but he hasn't got poo poo equipped. Let's see if his shuriken does anything.

DETPOPE, as well, has nothing on his bony frame. He does have a bitchin' hat stashed though.

STERV is a starving catbard, so he has only tattered cloth gear. And his lute.
Using the Lute all the time is a good idea.

MONMOON has psychic abilities, but after two turns, he is spent.

Yes! Yes! SPLIT IT WIDE OPEN.

RULES OF... wait what?

: "It avoided my attack!? IT CANNOT BE"
: "No, you just missed. HERE IS HOW IT IS DONE."

Well now. That was quite a punch there.

: "AGH, I pulled my back!"

Meanwhile, STERV finds out that the skills that got him kicked out of the taverns are actually useful in the field of battle. He is so boring that he puts PLANTS to sleep.

Not bad for a band of naked idiots, and one decked samurai that can't hit a goddamn barn.

Eeeh.

Empty.

So, let's map it up.

Well, nothing in that room, so let's just equip everyone with their respective gear. Tinklee shall equip her gear. BUt possibly get rid of the bo soon.

Tinysan already has his stuff on.

SNAKE has no weapon though. Hm. He recovered the shuriken he fumbled? Strange. Will check that later.

Also you can check things about the items.
I have NO IDEA what the first two lines mean. At all.

DETPOPE has a bunch of things, and full spellcazting ability, it seems.

I don't think STERV will be using his sling and the stone bullets that much, but he shall SING THE SONG OF HIS PEOPLE.

MONMOON has an interesting thing, though.

Usable? It makes him harder to hit if used in battle? I have no idea.

The party, exhausted after a single fight, decides to rest for a bit before facing the rest of the dangers of the Castle.

Well, that was not much mapping done.

Next things shall be in way way less detail.

Update 3.5: Mapping Concerns.

Well, Grid Cartographer has several map themes. Themes. For map graphics. That's a thing.

First we have the default one. Blueprints. Readable, easily understandable, easy on the eyes. High contrast between the lines and the background. I like it.

Then we have black on white. Again, easy to read but it is harder on the eyes due to, well, WHITE BACKGROUND.

White on black is similar, only opposite. It works.

Blue on white. Agh. Less readable than black on white. and equally eye searing. Was it meant to emulate actual graphing paper? I have no idea. I don't like it.

OH GOD NO KILL IT WITH FIRE.

Parchment! Classy but it makes filesizes blow up CONSIDERABLY. Sure, I forgot to pass this through PNGOUT, but it is more than ten times as big as most of the others.

And finally, this one. It also is larger than the others in filesize, but not as much as parchment is. It is rather unfitting for Wizardry. Or IS IT?

Which is the mapping style that should be taken?

Yeah I am giving the manual a look, which I should've done a year ago when I got it on gog. Old manuals are always fun to read.

Here it is, the table. A Lizardman Lord would've needed a roll of 23 to get to be a Lord. drat!

No idea if the documentation is in the Steam version, but that one has been CONSIDERABLY cheaper than the GOG versions.
All 3 for like 3.75 bux which was cheaper than Wizardry 8 itself? Hell yeah, but I did not get them on steam. I already had them on GOG and I was already not playing them there.

Honestly, GOG is a goddamn amazing service. I had played Wiz8 like 10 years ago and loved it, but now that there is a way to get them OFFICIALLY and for cheap? Of course I am gonna go for it. Steam and GOG are really impressive. 10 years ago I would've expected to have at most 10 to 15 original PC games, due to price and relative rarity of software where I live. Now? Well, I have like a 100 things installed on Steam (and not playing them :P)

So yeah. There was nothing on that room. Fortunately, there are other rooms! Also I hosed it up here. Also, notice how THIS map screen is over 10 times as big in a png as the OTHERS. Yeah. I like this one, but it is a)Not as readable, b)Way way way larger in PNG form.

TINKLEE is gonna be our goddamn doorpusher until we get SNAKE or STERV a couple more points into Skulduggery so we can actually PICK the goddamn doors.

Nothing! Oh well. It was worth trying!

Here we have a treasure, though!

When chests are there, we need to INSPECT IT because it will very very likely be trapped. This one is.

Sin? What?

: "I smell a trap!"

: "There is definitely something, but I am not sure what it is..."

: "IT IS EITHER A SET OF VORPAL BLADES, IN WHICH CASE YOU ARE DEAD, OR A POISONED DAGGER, IN WHICH CASE YOU ARE MAIMED AND SUFFERING. CHOOSE WISELY."
: "Poison Dagger!?"

And it was. Hooray.

Hooray! That is a good thing! No one died, and everyone got a bunch of xp.

: "I'll take the Dirks! "

I don't know why I gave this to MONMOON, but I did so there it is.

: "NO! I DEMAND THE MAGICAL GRIMOIRE!"

So, every race can use the Book of Directions, but only mages, bishops, bards and... Uh, samurai? can use it. Not priests, not fighters, not Lords.

Let's give it to DETPOPE.

The Dirk is a thrown weapon. Bah! It cannot be used by priests, bishops or... Uh, I forget what the second M is. Bah.

SNAKE has no points in thrown, last I checked, but he is a ninja, how bad can he be with them?

DETPOPE gets the book.

: "THESE RUNES. THEIR MEANING ELUDES ME!"
: "How does someone become a Bishop without learning how to read?"
: "SILENCE, MINION, I SHALL READ THIS. IN TIME. I WILL!"

Uuuh. Okay. I am gonna assume that this one is a single use spell.

SNAKE gets the cloak though, since MONMOON cannot use it.

: "This should give me a good edge on the battlefield."

There it was.

So let's use one of the pro features in Grid Cartographer! NOTES! You can add several! This was our first treasure. So let us mark it. Also that door on the right is supposed to be on the wall. Should fix that. Eventually.

ADVANCING!

This was probably supposed to be the FIRST though.

: "I'm sure it is clean!"

"A cure but twice, and healing thrice, one life for thee times seven."

We get three potions of light healing, one cure light condition, one poison cure and an amulet of life. Which if the poem it came with was right, will work to revive a character seven times.

: "I SHALL BE THE CUSTODIAN OF LIFE AND DEATH."

So DETPOPE gets the amulet of Life.

A mysterious fountain! Let's see if anything horrible happens!

: "I am parched after kicking all those doors down!"

: "But how does it taste?"
: "Not bad! It is fresh water!"

Behind it we have a door, and two sets of stairs going up.

"Perched high above the room has log turned sour, as it sits condemned to languish in its own final sentence. If there is any last judgement to be decreed upon this fallen chamber and tarnished throne, it must be gleaned from the decay that it laps upon its own dais as itself festers and rots, bearing witness to emptiness, filth and stench, silently weeping tears of its own despoiled substance."

: "THIS THRONE ROOM HAS REMAINED EMPTY FOR FAR TOO LONG. "

So let's see what is in the southern door.

Yeah, this one.

: "Rats! You must be getting pretty hungry, right friend?"
: "Felpurr feels insulted! Besides felpurr is not that hungry again just yet."

Yeah, so far, we have seen a couple of rat variants, and some vines. Flesh eating vines.

But apparently quite empty. Except that in this corner, if one utilices the "Search" function...

Wait what.

: "A PALTRY SUM FOR A LIFE."

To the north we have...

Unknown, eh? Those unknown things sound rather gross!

Here you find the gross residue.

Directly across the first chest, we have another thing. Also I might've hosed up the map. Damnit, I am bad at this! I will fix it on the next one.

Good.

Huh, nice!

: "I follow the way of the sword. Its honor should fall on my hands."

: "... What IS this thing? It is far too heavy and unbalanced! "

Aaand here we have a slight issue.
The sword of striking is a very good weapon. But no one in the party can use it. Faeries cannot even hold it, it is a big sword.
The only classes that can make us of it are Fighters, Valkyries, and Lords. Oh well.

Next: God drat I hate you, why vote for the EGA theme. Why.
Damnit why must the Sci Fi theme melt my computer.

I sent an email to David Walters (Maker of Grid Cartographer) and he responded with a fix to the "VDU theme causes processor to overload". Will try that. If even that does not function adequately, well, it is goddamn cyan graphics. MY EYES.

Edit: And it worked. Removing the post-processing (so, removing the scanlinesy thing) allows me to run both dosbox and it without my computer melting. It is slightly less pretty but it works. With the post-processing, the thing would make my computer's processor be above 90 Celsius by itself, without it? Comfortably working at 55 or so. Really weird.

This fountain is honestly quite useful. Allows the party to get restoration of the stamina. Fun.

God drat it. I rather dislike this goddamn theme! Also, the scifi one works now quite well! Thanks, HiddenAsbestos!

Well let's advance.
I hosed up and jammed that door on the left of the fountain. I am a durr. And bad at maps.

Really bad at maps but let's map this poo poo.

This could be slightly easier if I had a direction spell. Soon.

Yeah. THere are a bunch of stairs here. Up and down.

And up here as well!

: "IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY CLEAR THAT THE COSMIC FORGE IS NOT IN THIS PARTICULAR FLOOR."
: "Nothing is ever as easy as one wants. "

Here is another interesting feature of the game. Being able to change classes, names, portraits. Not races though.

You just pop over to "change profession" and presto!

Eeeeh. THough fighter priest does describe a monk quite well don't it?

Another crossroad. Leading up and down.

A closed door!

: "This smells fishy!"
; "WHERE? There is only dust and age smells here."
: "I DO NOT PERCEIVE ANY SMELLS, BUT THIS DOES WARRANT FURTHER INVESTIGATION."

But investigation shall wait a while. There is further mapping to be done.

: "WHAT, THE CASTLE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DESERTED."
: "You thought we would be the only ones searching this place? "
: "Brigands of all kinds are always attracted to empty dwelling places. It is practically a rule of nature."

Well i was not expecting this encounter. Oh well. And then WHEN I want a goddamn encounter, there are none

: "DO YOU LIKE MY TOUCH? I THINK YOU SHOULD LIKE MY TOUCH. IT IS QUITE GOOD."

Not a bad amount of xp, hah.

Pants! Hopefully better than some of the default equipment!

STERV became a slightly better bard! But he only got ONE skill point bonus. That is fuckin' terrible.

He can dig skills MARGINALLY better. And his rank changed! He is now a Minstrel!

MONMOON ALSO got a level, and is now a Psychic.

Forgot to check how many points he got. But I GUESS IT WAS NOT very many either. Oh well. Poor MONMOON.

Huh, that is new. It will require investigation! But not right now. Let's map whatever we can.

There is something there though.

After beating up those rats, TINKLEE also got a level. Hooray. Also she's killed 17 things with her bare hands right now. That is good.

Let's give her 5 critpoints. That is a good thing I guess.

TINYSAN also acquired a level! I like that both got more points than STERV.

Same to him.

And that'ss all we can map since that door to the left is jammed, because I SAVED instead of rerolling once. TINKLEE failed at strength there. Oh well.

: "There is something here."
: "YES, I SEE IT TOO. "
: "Wondering what happens if I press that button..."
: "NO, don't! It might be a trap!"

: "That went better than I expected."

Button!

That doesn't bode well.

But here is something!

A key!

I should use the "ground" brush more often. It is faster than drawing all the walls one by one. Eh.

Special and can be used by anyone.

Jammed this bullshit! Damnit.

Monks cannot use them! BUt bards can, so now STERV gets something slightly less tattered.

Yup. That.
That is a good thing! Slightly lower AC! In this game, lower AC is better.

Also this is what happens when you get a game over. With any luck, we won't see this too often. It was not due to battle in this time. It was acquired in purpose. But we'll see that later.

Update 06

Very well, let's go up. Through this silly tower. Sci Fi theme works now. Once again, thanks, Hidden Asbestos!

: "Whose footsteps are these?"
: "It was no footstep, it was a bump."
: "We better follow it, then."

: "Those WERE footsteps, I am sure of it! "

: "I think this is the top. of this tower."

: "Stop picking them up, STERV!"
: "But it would be a waste to just leave them on the floor."

Gasp!

Ah, a door!

: "IT SEEMS WE ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS CASTLE. "
: "We already knew that. Well, if those bushwhackers count as "Someone"."

Not the friendliest person, eh?

And right now, we cannot. We do not have a response to the person.

The tower flares up and leads to the outside.

So there is more than just this castle here, eh?

: "Ah, fresh air. Good way to clear one's head after the stale air and moldy interiors."
: "FRESH AIR IS NOT GOING TO MAKE FINDING THE COSMIC FORGE ANY EASIER. GET BACK INSIDE."

I messed up this map here. Eh.

So let's go back inside.

And let's go through here.

Well that was uneventful.

Let's climb the other tower.

So far it is pretty much thes same thing, but with less bumps and less footsteps.

And on the third floor, it is identical. Again, in the other one, I hosed up the mapping.

: "I think there is something or someone watching us."

: "AGH! Flying rats!"

Two vampire bats and a regular one. Oh joy.

MONMOON can help Sterv with the "disable the enemy through sleep" thing, now affording to cast it a bunch of times.

3 on level 1, 6 points on level 2. Let's go with the level 2 one.

Tinysan seems to be getting better at things, but Snake is perilously close to dying.

It all goes well and they drop a bunch of XP.

SNAKE levels up! And is now a Genin.

We want people that can detect traps AND open doors. Yeah. Hiding is all well and good but we also need goddamn utility!

DETPOPE also got a level and ONE MEASLY SKILL POINT. Damnit that is not a good levelup.

But since it is a shame that he can't read or write, let's give him one there.

He also gets a spell, but we are not wasting it on Direction. No sir.
Armor of Earth.

Because if we use this, he gets Direction in his spellbook. If used in the field directly, it is a single cast of it. We don't want that.

: "YES. MY GRIMOIRE GROWS."
: "Did he... Suddenly become literate? Well that is new."
: "SILENCE. I SAID IT WOULD COME BACK TO ME EVENTUALLY. SOONER RATHER THAN LATER IT DID."

And now with the direction spell, we have a magical compass.

: "WHAT KIND OF ADVENTURING GROUP STARTS A JOURNEY WITHOUT A COMPASS? A DOOMED ONE. NOW WE HAVE NO NEED OF ONE, BUT IT WAS A TERRIBLE OVERSIGHT."

: "The mountains don't give back what they take..."

Is there anything behind that closed door?

Oooh, goody!

And pf cpirse, being armor, it cannot be used by faeries. Fighters, thieves, bards, valkyries, lords and Samurai can use it.

So TINYSAN is now slightly better protected than he was with the robes.

Next: The other two towers, I guess.

Update 07

Let's go up. There may be good stuff there.

Well this is interesting. It is more than just a simple tower.
There are some open doorways and passages.

Also, closed doors. That is annoying.

But at least it is different!

More drat closed doors. Right no there is no way to open them. Hopefully that changes in the near future.

Nothing to do, so let's just go up.

: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH"

; "Who would have expected an old, abandoned castle to be in such a state of disrepair?"

Damnit. If they had been hurt from a previous encounter that would be problematic.
Well, maybe problematic, the party DOES have an item that can revive them up to seven times so that's a thing.

: "LET'S CAMP HERE. WE'VE ALREADY SUFFERED A SUPPORT FALLING ON US, SO IT IS PROBABLY SAFER HERE THAN ELSEWHERE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN SOMETHING NEW IS GOING TO FALL ON YOUR HEAD."
: "Yes because staying under a place where the support has collapsed is the safest course of action."
: "QUESTIONING MY COMMANDS IS NOT THE SAFEST COURSE OF ACTION, YOU KNOW."
: "He's just cranky because he is hurt, surely."

Goin' up.

Hm, I wonder if this is closed.

Nope, wide open. That is a good thing.

And hooray! Treasure!

The way disarming traps works is that by checking it, you get a bunch of letters that might be in the name of whatever trap is there. Of course, that is affected on how GOOD your dudes are in detecting traps, and they can be quite wrong, it seems! They are also not in order. Red and Green. Red is possibly wrong letters, green is "pretty sure it is in there", because gently caress colorblind people, that's why.
Actually not sure if those particular colors would be problematic for colorblind people, but I am going to assume that they are.

WELP. The letters seem to have been there!
POISON DAGGER
PO S AGG
while the J was nowhere to be seen. Too bad they did not properly disarm it.

And VERY LUCKY that STERV did not get poisoned. Only 1 damage. Eh. Could be worse.

Also, whatever trap is there it gets randomized with each reload. Fun.

The amount of keys also. HAD ONE roll with 3 keys, but it had killed MONMOON. Not good since wasting a charge of the amulet THAT way would be silly.

SNAKE gets the key holding duties. Because why not? He already has the key of the Ramm so eh

MONMOON can't use this poo poo. But he'll hold it for a while.

Let's waste the poison cure on STERV. Sure. Why not.

: "AGH, it tastes like day old hairball!"
: "I am not even going to ask HOW you know what that tastes like. I don't want to know."
: "Learned that when" : "SHUT UP. NO ONE WANTS TO KNOW."

Let's check the outer ring. There may be something interesting there.

Gutter vines!

Hm. That does sound ominous doesn't it?

Yeah, can't do poo poo here. Let's just go down.

This doesn't work. But THERE WAS a door that we could use it on.

This one. Let's go back to the ground floor.

It is jammed. TINKLEE could not knock it down. Which I found weird.

Iron Keys are consumable, so using this one makes it not work anymore I am gonna assume that the key just stays stuck in the keyhole.

And here is something. I did not realize that the Stamina war was SO important. It affects EVERYTHING you can do. The door got stuck because TINKLEE could not muster enough strength to surpass its resistance.

SNAKE and STERV cannot pick locks juuust yet

But after drinking from the fountain, TINKLEE can easily just open it.

: "I told you, it's all just a question of putting your back into it."

Yeah. Like this. With less stamina? It doesn't work. At all.

Hell yeah. Fairy monk hits well.

Well, that was a thing.

Goin' up.

Looks pretty much just like a mirror version of the northwestern tower.

Except it has something else!

Weird room!

: "Rats!"
: "Lots of them!"
: "And big ones! But size doesn't matter!"

STERV gets a level up right there.

He's the worst thief. His skulduggery is also low. TOo bad we did not get a good bunch of skill points. Could've probably just reloaded and hope for a better skill point roll, but that'll do. Eh.

He also gets a nice new spell.

Sure. That'll work for the moment.

MONMOON also became marginally more useful!

And this will let him recognize enemies slightly better.

And another useful spell! This one opens doors. Unlocks. Yes.

Huh, a new key type. Will this work in those greenish metal doors? Couldn't hurt to check!

We'll check that next time.

I've reloaded 30 times due to jamming doors (because in my previous attempt last year I actually had a thief that could open doors via lockpick, and did not realize Stamina was THAT important), and around 15 on the last chest because it either killed someone in one hit, or paralyzed half the party without a way to mitigate it. Update 08

Let's try that new Copper Key.

Well that did not work. Oh well. Let's advance.

Goin' up. MY EYES.

: "Are we going to wast this? It would be a shame to waste it."
: "I don't think tasting this would be a wise idea."

: "I CANNOT SMELL ANYMORE BUT THIS DISGUSTS ME."
: : "Awwww that is such a waste."

Maybe we should've searched the carcass, but drat that is kind of disgusting isn't it?

Oh joy of joys, an encounter!

It goes rather well! Then again, having them all sleeping all the time helps.

Oh good! MONMOON gets them because I am tired of him being useless after running out of magic points.

Not much to say here, honestly. It's just a tower.

: "I long for the day when I can run in the forest and howl at the moon with my brethren..."
: "I think he is thinking about wolves, not Rawulf..."

Okay, we tried the towers. Let's instead check out the basement.

Interesting, a door right after going down from the stairs.

Oh joy. One of those doors!

And rats. Hooray, Rats.

RABID. And KILLER.

Forgot to equip MONMOON. Unfortunately. Oh well.

And then the game froze. God damnit. No noise, no new things happening, no nothing. That is rather annoying.

Getting back there, we get an altogether different encounter!
These dudes are quite harder than the rats!

: "Bloodsuckers! They suck your blood!"
: "I think that is... Well, why they are called that. "

They have damage dealing abilities.

Also, they give the LARGEST amount of xp so far.

Gold is low though.

TINKLEE gets slightly better at murdering things with her bare hands and feet and 5 skill points!

As well as a healing spell. THat is always useful.

TINYsan is also getting better at murdering things with swords. Huh, he has one more kill than TINKLEE. Also, is two years older.

Sure we have STERV and MONMOON to sleep the enemies with lullabies and psychic powers, but a hypnotic Samurai Hobbit sounds like a good idea.

SNAKE is also 19 years old now, huh.

Still very bad at unlocking things. We have not been using him or STERV to open doors. That should be done, honestly.

DETPOPE was also ordained quite young, but is now 19. Huh, why is TINKLEE 20 when everyone else is 18 or 19?

Also making wounds, not just healing them. CAUSE SERIOUS WOUNDS. I guess.

Oh no! An ambush while sleeping! Fortunately STERV and TINYSAN were awake by then. Unfortunately, SLIMES.

: "AMBUSHED? By these disgusting blobs?"
: "They do not taste too bad,"

They were quickly dispatched.

The basement has things to do and harder monsters to kill than the first floor AND the towers.

Fortunately, maps.

And doors. Hm.

The Slimes are considerably less dangerous than the leeches, to be honest.

So let's just kill them.

Uh
how does that work

And they weren't regular slimes! They were POISON slimes! That is dangerous! Got lucky there, no goddamn poisonings in this encounter. That would've been very bad.

Let's see what is behind the door.

Oh no! An encounter!

GASP, a single brigand!

... Whaaaat
He is welcoming us. As strangers. Maybe the party has things he'll buy at a high price.

No one here can be called Ishmael though. I doubt DETPOPE would like to share a cot with him.
Well, DETPOPE is no sailor, anyways.

What should we say to QUEEQUEG? We shall see what he has to sell next time.

Well let's see what Queequeg can help us with things.

: "I WILL TAKE CARE OF THE INTERLOCUTION."

Huh. To speak with an NPC you need to write on a text parser. This is neat! Asking for Queequeg's name leads to this.

Oh my. He knows of TREASURE!

But he cannot tell us where that treasure is since that is what he wants to know. I assume he wants to go and steal that treasure for himself.

Hm. Up? I wonder if that is the one that said he was not going out. Interesting.

Need a password then?

Oh here is something.

Oh goddamnit. We do not have that information.

Oh well.

Let's trade items and money then.

Using the pool option leads to all the cash being carried by a single dude. In this case, DETPOPE.

Hm. Expensive stuff! That's mysterious!

Cutlasses and broadswords oh my. And a couple of spells (a book and a scroll) that DETPOPE already has learned.

Well that is a bunch of stuff I don't really want to buy. Nope.

Let's see if STERV has what it takes.

: "Magic pawpads are the key"

: "Well that was the wisest move"

WELLLP.

That did not happen. No. RELOAD.

Let's just sell poo poo we ain't gonna use. The dirks, for example.

That is not a high amount of money, but better than nothing!

Huh. It seems that the things he sells change from visit to visit.

Except for this.

That's a pretty expensive potion!

That's not a bad amount of money for a sword that we cannot use. BUT that might change.

Well let's see what is directly opposit to Queequeg.

: "A MORGUE!"

: "No, worse than that... BARRACKS!"

: "For once that was not my fault!"

: "... Well, that was."

Are those lizardmen? What.

: "Superior discipline!"

Well drat. MONMOON is getting more useful now that he can actually do SOMETHING besides psychic abilities.

Well now, let's see what is in this little closet.

: "WHY are there more people on this room than in the BARRACKS?"

: "AAAGH. I am all itchy! My WINGS are itchy!"

That is not a good thing!

STERV is slightly less bad at things now!

Stealing will be slightly easier, I guess?

MONMOON as well.

And he can recognize things slightly better.

THIS will be useful!

But yeah, that took everything out of them. Look at TINKLEE's stamina! drat.

The other closet thing has something similar. BUT there is a button! It barely shows on this screenshot, but there is a button.

See?

TINKLEE is also slightly less bad at hitting things!

And learned a spell.

Do you want any real advice about how and when to do class changing and that sort of thing? Or are you planning on trying to go all the way without changing classes?

Also there is a game breaking bug in the stock version that makes enemies resist all the level 7 spells, and an option to make mana regen not glacial so you might want to apply those patches to save yourself from going completely insane. You already accidently have a party full of people with slow mana regen with the exception of the single fairy.

I gave it a read, but not a very thorough one, it seems!

I would like that advice, going without changing classes would be a bad idea, since it appears to be a base mechanic. Was this the first game with class changing like that?

Where would one find such a patch?

Well thanks! That could've saved a lot of rerolls on character generation, haha! The effects of the patches applied work for games already in progress?

Of course it was not the goddamn password.

We can't do poo poo. So let's just move on!

This one. Nothing worked. TINKLEE just refused to actually force it.
SNAKE and STERV are just ham handed and can't unlock anything just yet.

But it doesn't work!

And neither did this!

In the end I just used a goddamn iron key. Damnit.

Well, hopefully this has interesting stuff.

: "I guess this was the jailer's office. This key has a tag that says "Jailer's"."
: "That is quite convenient. "

: "Rats!"
: "We have told you time and again, they are not for eating! You don't know where they have been!"

Let's try the new key in this door!

Well now. It worked! It really worked!

: "A JAIL. IN A ROYAL CASTLE."

Lots and lots of closed doors.

Let's go back to the store and get some things. This sounds appropriately Bishopy.
And of course, I forgot to actually equip it. I'll do that next time.

These dudes were SURPRISINGLY durable.

So far going back to this place is more effective than resting, it takes like 3 rests for TINKLEE to get all her stamina back. This does it in one gulp.

Of course this one does not work. At all.

This goes for STERV.

And next time we should explore this part.
