Newer rumors from the rumor mill are saying that the 2,000 people who passed the biographical questionnaire on this last announcement are going to move forward in the process. They estimate this will yield as low as 400 controllers graduating the academy (after losing some in the hiring process and others to academy failure). This means they would plan to have additional off the street hiring announcements in the future because 400 is not nearly enough.

Someone who left my facility (and the FAA) for a private business opportunity, now works at a contract tower and is waiting to get back in to the FAA. He did not pass the questionnaire.

Once they have the next opening announcement, everyone copy/pastes the bio-q answers from the people who passed this one.

E: As frustrating as it is not passing, I can't imagine having ATC experience (whether military or otherwise) and still not getting through, especially when some of the questions were "How many sports did you play in high school?"

2007, I actually transferred there from Minnesota after...misspending my first couple college years. How about you? And you're absolutely right, the fact that we got either the mechanic, pilot or management degree in addition to the CTI cert was excellent.

What I'm getting from all this discussion is that I should switch majors to mechanic or airport management. I've intentionally been avoiding the direct ATC courses until my last quarters in case I decide/need to switch. I've set an appointment with my aviation adviser on whether or not I should switch before I have to register next quarter. There's a generic "Aircraft Transportation" degree that's a bit of a catch-all program I Might go with.
One thing the aviation department does for/to ATC students, at least, is drive home that this is not a guaranteed route of employment. For any of the aviation degrees, the program director for the aviation division requires you to sign a paper stating that you fully recognize that taking any of the programs is not a guarantee of employment, then he copies it for the school's records and gives you the original.

FAA released the report on using biodata to select controllers (PDF).

So now when they tell you they're better qualified for the job than anyone else because of *REASONS*, you can laugh in their face with actual data.

You're being disingenuous with your quote and not properly representing the data. No correlation was found, but this study is based on people who passed the bio-q, not everyone who applied. And they raised a question in their conclusion stating that further research is needed to evaluate CTI programs-

quote:

CTI Graduates. Additional research is needed to understand the relationship between being a CTI graduate and training status. A question is whether graduates from some CTI schools are more likely to succeed in training than graduates from other CTI schools. Are programmatic differences among the schools obscuring the relationship between having a CTI degree and success in ATC training? We recommend that a follow-on to this study be conducted in which differences among CTI programs be examined in relationship to ATC training success.

Either way, the largest issue raised by the CTI schools is that the bio-q is bullshit and removes completely viable applicants from being considered for a position. The study actually agrees with this:

quote:

Based on an analysis of the relationship between selected biodata items and training success, we conclude that the evidence for using these biodata items for controller selection is weak.

quote:

We concluded that, after screening applicants based on age and selecting only those who passed the AT-SAT test battery, the biodata items assessed did little to improve our ability to select the applicants most likely to reach CPC.

Not sure what other CTI schools have been saying to their students, but the head of our ATC program has made it very clear multiple times that completing the program does not guarantee you any job within the industry. He's fighting the recent changes because the bio-q is a complete load, and individuals should be considered for a position based on their actual ability and not how many sports they played in high school.

Seattle center is nice, but the city it's in (Auburn) is a poo poo hole. You're about 45 minutes or so south of Seattle itself. You're a 20 minute drive from a town that's famous for a guy getting his colon punctured by a horse penis and dying (Enumclaw). The center is across the street from the largest casino in the state.
Everyone I've talked to really prefers Seattle because it's a lot more laid back and not nearly as busy as east coast locations. Both flight data and controllers on the floor say they wish they'd transferred sooner. I've talked to people from Atlanta, Chicago and Miami.

E: My internship is up at the end of March. I'm over in flight data.

Word is that the OTS hiring announcement will be mid-March. They plan on getting enough people in to not have another announcement for 18 months.

E: On an unrelated note: well gently caress; my ATC 2 class was cancelled due to low enrollment. I took ATC 1 last quarter and was supposed to be taking 2 & 3 this quarter. If everything goes well I'll be in OKC some time in the fall. I was going to take my final math class and graduate at the end of the summer quarter. AFAIK they don't offer ATC 2 for the summer quarter. I'll be one class away from graduation.
Becoming a controller is my end goal, but it would be nice to at least come out of school with a degree.

My classmate is a former military controller with several years of experience. She applied back in February in the bid open to folks with ATC experience. She was getting antsy about not hearing anything, so she applied in the OTS bid. She failed the BQ and just heard back from the FAA yesterday; they're hiring her on as a controller.
I'm glad that she got the job, but it's just another example of the ridiculous logic of this whole thing.

Question(s) about contract towers and ramps:
As I will, likely, only get one more chance at getting into ATC through the FAA, I might be looking at contract towers.
SEATAC Ramp is actually hiring, and I should be getting my ATC and Dispatch AAS degrees in a bit (classes just ended). I know CTO and military are preferred, but I've not seen either as a requirement, just that they'll be given priority.
I understand a contract environment will be run differently than a government one, but that's doesn't concern me. My main question is whether or not experience as a contract controller is applicable towards FAA ATC. I have a feeling the answer is "no", and assume the competition to get into one will more than likely be steep, considering the slew of ATC grads that have been shafted by the hiring changes and senior controllers who don't want to leave the field.
