JohnSherman posted:Is it normal for Russians to always address each other by their full names? In the residence they are calling each other by first name and patronymic (ex. Nina Sergeevna (Nina daughter-of-Sergey), Oleg Igorevich (son-of-Igor) which is just addressing coworkers and non-close friends/acquaintances with routine respect. Passive-aggressive poo poo is going to get real if/when Oleg starts overstepping social bounds and calling his superiors, or even Nina, by more familiar terms or even by nicknames. His character seems like the sort of jackass that would do that to push buttons. ![]()

Man, there's so much stuff either turning pear shaped or getting ready to. Martha, Paige, Stan's office investigation, Oleg Oleg'ing Nina. ![]() BIG HEADLINE posted:Also, what I wouldn't give for a more detailed Claudia origin story, though - with her doing poo poo like slitting Nazi throats in Stalingrad or something. This would be a great flashback or spin-off series. howe_sam posted:The couple who attacked Elizabeth and Phillip at the end of the episode are probably Mossad agents in the country illegally so the woman isn't going to run to the police. That's my take on the situation too.

Narcissus1916 posted:hey history people, what would Anton the scientists' life be like back in the Soviet Union? imo, Best case scenario would be house arrest + working on Soviet projects under duress, or death, vs. prison, working as a janitor or being arrested for being unemployed because he was fired for being a dissident. ![]() For people interested in the topic here are some articles from the era: A article from 1981: Refusenik; MARK AZBEL: A SOVIET CITIZEN'S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM "It is almost impossible for refuseniks to find work in their fields, and even menial jobs as doormen are in jeopardy if it is discovered that they are really laid-off Jewish physicists, chemists, or computer scientists. For applying to emigrate, they are fired; for not having a job, they are arrested." 1990: "Many scientists once denied emigration have now left the USSR, but others are still unable to obtain exit visas. Yuri Magarshack is doing science again. Today, he is an assistant researcher in the chemistry department at New York University. Yet for an 11-year period that ended last spring, the theoretical physicist was struggling to endure life as a refusenik - a Soviet citizen, usually Jewish, who is denied permission to emigrate. Dismissed from his job as head of a laboratory in Leningrad."

BIG HEADLINE posted:Also, I have a nagging feeling they're setting Stan up to kill Nina, Oleg, and Arkady, and *himself* all in one sitting, just to 'go out like a hero.' I kinda expect that because Stan has a history of deep cover work the FBI has been dangling him to be 'turned' by the KGB so that they can have Stan embedded in the KGB/rezidentura politics. Maybe, Season 2 ending with Stan reporting to a boss's boss's boss or some super secret shady intelligence branch about having completed the first step, and then Season 3 will be him attempting to maintain believable cover while Nina gets better at spy games and sniffs out his weaknesses. Arkady will continue to be awesome, Oleg will end up being the scape-goat for things and be sold up the Volga for the poo poo that Nina has been involved in. v ![]()

Hand of the King posted:Okay, fine, I understand now that Arkady is shaking Beeman by beating up Nina and threatening to send her back. BUT, it sounds like he plans to do it anyway even though he sounded like he was going to let her redeem herself (which it seems like she has been doing). Why the sudden change? Because ![]() I think that the 'change' may seem sudden because prior to Oleg's arrival a lot of Arkady's motivations and operations were only shown through conversations with Nina. Arkady is a very pragmatic Soviet administrator and if Nina cannot be saved, despite any personal affections Arkady has for her, then it is in his best personal interests to cover his rear end and turn her in rather than be seen as complicit with her traitorous actions. He is playing a very dangerous game with his career and life by taking the actions that he has thus so far to exploit Beeman via Nina, with the hopeful end of Nina being an asset rather than a traitor.

coma posted:I think I might be done with this show, the "second-generation" illegals thing is completely retarded. Why would you risk trying to turn a hitherto clueless child into a plant at the CIA/FBI/DoD when you can just do what you've been doing already, which is turning people within the organization, which is how it was actually done with great effect in the 70s and 80s and how it was already working in the show. There is that, the historical precdent for what kinda spying the KGB preferred, and the administrative instability of the KGB and related 'security' services during the late 70s-80s. That's a lot of disbelief for me to suspend, but the average viewer probably doesn't know much beyond what critics reviews and current media reports are like, and they may be totally receptive to the idea of intergenertational deep cover spy planning and wonder if that is how Putin really invaded Crimea. v ![]()
