Agree with this, April was really impressive, funny, and poised, especially for a 23 year old. and yeah, I'm rooting for Vi, too. Kelly did not impress me as much as she did in her intro video, and her looks were pretty blah. Although was that a Hedwig wig I clocked? Also I just rewatched Paris is Burning this week since we were talking about it in the old thread, and Goddamn do I love me a ballroom queen ![]() I'm liking Gia Gunn a lot more than I thought I would, although she's still a bit annoying, especially since they seem to love her in the talking head interviews. Ben is talented, funny, intelligent, and sweet, to boot. Looking forward to her. Adore is a bit of a brat, but she's funny, so it evens out. Ben, Vi, and April are definitely my favorites of this bunch. I can't wait to see next week's, I'm really excited about Milk, Darienne, and Courtney. I wonder if it'll be the same challenge, a similar one with different shows, or something completely different. I had a thought about the elimination, I didn't catch the end of the critique because my wireless cut out so they might have addressed how it'll work, but what if they do a little tournament-style elimination, where the two losers of this week's and next week's have another lip sync to determine who's the first to go? I dunno if I like the idea that two queens will be eliminated before they even meet the full cast, for some reason. Plus, more LSFYL's are never a bad thing. I do love the format of the split premier, though, seeing more of each queen is really nice.

I think part of what's so refreshing about this premier is that it doesn't have anything like the prefab Coco/Alyssa drama. I know the claws will start to come out in a few weeks, but it's nice to not start the season out with this huge plot bomb that we have already been told multiple times is going to go off. Having the whole Rolaskatox thing heaped on in like episode 2 kinda soured the season early for me, especially since I was really excited about Detox and Alaska, and only Alaska really lived up to that expectation. And yeah, the Heathers thing was stupid. Yo, you just want a cool name for all your friends so you can ostracize the other queens. Don't try to make it something else. ![]() I still love season 3 though. There were some great queens that year. I want Stacey Layne Matthews on All Stars 2 like whoa. I don't really get her personality, and she seems to be doing "funny/campy" looks without getting what makes them funny. I liked her intro look with the huge purse because it was so over the top Kardashian. And not knowing what a DeLorean is? Is she being purposefully stupid to get the other girls to write her off? Also, her makeup was unintentionally creepy as poo poo in the video. At one point she just had straight up black eyes. ![]() This season, though. ![]() Also yeah Adore shoulda been in the bottom.

Nihonniboku posted:See, this is what I really disagree about Vivacious. She is messy. Really messy. She claims she's a club kid, and represents old school drag. RuPaul was a club kid 25 years ago. And then RuPaul got sober. Vivacious, to me, seems like she was simply around the club kids. The club kids moved on, and Vivacious is still here nearly 30 years later claiming to be one. We saw it with her poor attempt at schooling the girls in vogueing in Untucked. Her runway looks were atrocious, and were a classic case of just a man in a dress. She never stood a chance on the show. She knew it, and RuPaul knew it, and frankly I'm surprised that so many people have become such fans of such a messy queen simply because she has some years in the bag. I get that she certainly has a respect for a certain era of drag. I just don't think she does it well. RuPaul and Michelle Visage were there. They get the aesthetic that Vivacious was going for. It still didn't help her. I think a lot of people, myself included, loved her personality a lot, so that combined with the "club drag is more about weird costumes than polish and glamor" sentiment made up for her less than perfect looks. I agree that she never really stood a chance. I was hoping she would show a bit more polish but yeah, she was pretty underwhelming by the end.

Why did Laganja have different reading glasses from everyone else? Somehow they made the rhyming jokes even worse. I also have no idea why Darienne chose Laganja first, or why it was such a huge deal to Dela. He has to know that he wouldn't be first pick in a 90s rap challenge, he's shown nothing whatsoever that would relate to that in the competition. Stroop There It Is posted:Totally not on topic with the current discussion, but I've noticed that people--myself included--often use both male and female pronouns to refer to the same or different drag queens at different times. It doesn't seem to be limited to particular contexts, such as when referring to them as their drag persona (female) versus the actual person (male, in the majority of cases). I wonder what causes people to use one or the other. Any thoughts on that? Have any of you noticed yourselves doing this? I've totally thought about this, and I've noticed that for me it's largely context-based. I usually default to female for the vast majority of the queens, unless I'm talking about someone with a drag persona that's clearly very different than their interview/workroom self. Like Ben, for instance, or if I'm talking about them completely outside of a Drag Race context. I think I even posted something about Milk earlier in the thread and said "He's cute out of drag" or something. It definitely varies a lot, though but if I'm talking exclusively about boy-Jinkx* or whatever, I'll use he, but otherwise I pretty much just say she. I will throw in the occasional he if I'm being shady, for instance, to clock someone horrible like Serena from S5. Except for the trans queens, obviously I use she permanently for them when I find out they're trans. For Laganja I've been using the Cro-Magnon pronoun, "Ugh." I think Ru said it best: "You can call me he, you can call me she, you can call me Regis and Kathy Lee. I don't care, just as long as you call me!" *a great name for a gay bar I love you for making this comparison.

spite house posted:Season 3 had Manila's Macarthur Park lipsync though. Hard to say, I think each one has its pros and cons. Season 1 has some great queens and it's quick, easy to get into, and a logical starting point. It also has loving horrible production value, the Vaseline-cam is pretty brutal and it feels like the show doesn't know what it's doing yet. And loving Rebecca Glasscock. Season 2 has Jujubee, Raven, great challenges and a ton of talent, but it still feels like the show hasn't hit its stride yet. Also NICOLE PAIGE BROOKS, although short lived, is unbearable. I think it's probably the least satisfying season because of Tyra's win, too. She's talented as poo poo and gorgeous but has no personality whatsoever and just makes sour faces all season. I'm still butthurt about neither Jujubee nor Raven getting the crown though. Season 3 had some fun challenges and finally feels like the show hit its stride. The queens, though, felt like a lot of cannon fodder and yeah, it's pretty clear Raja is destroying it all. Not to mention all of that stupid Heathers poo poo, the Mimi Fiasco, etc. Still had some lovable queens, I love me some Stacey Layne Matthews, henny. And Shangela. Shangela is both a pro and a con. Season 4 we've discussed. Goofy uninspired challenges and middling talent at times, but it has some classic moments from when the show first started to get huge. Also has some of the best lip syncs of the series. Season 5 starts to feel a little too producer-meddly and some of the lip syncs really show that. Jinkx got a loving Yma Sumac song. The challenges and personalities were much more fun than season 4, though, save for the prefab Coco-Alyssa feud. Also Alaska was on this season, which automatically makes it best. The cast felt pretty cannon-foddery, with a lot of queens you just knew weren't even top five material. I think season 6 is shaping up to be my favorite, actually. Bianca and Adore are everything.
