Was reading the manga series The Vinland Saga and came across something I thought was pretty badass. The series is mainly set during the Viking conquest of England and follows several characters, one of them is Thorfinn son of Thors who used to be a real killer. He spends a good chunk of the series on a quest for revenge only to have it taken away from him as the object of his revenge is killed. In his anger he attacks King Canute of England, who in revenge sells Thorfinn into slavery (lots of revenge going on.) This scene takes place years later as King Canute (who is now king of Denmark too) attacks the farming village Thorfinn has been living in as a slave. In the intervening years Thorfinn has renounced violence and is now trying to broker a peace between Canute and the landowner. (remember, read right to left I also skipped some pages for brevity's sake)

I don't see any horses being punched there  Seriously though Vinland Saga is a great series, it's got plenty of badass in the sense of dudes punching dudes, and also badass like this where your words speak louder than your actions.

It was necessary to trim it a bit to post here (since that scene takes up essentially the entire chapter), but I love how that chapter of Vinland Saga is constructed: it takes time to linger on the mood of the surrounding warriors - initially rowdy and betting on how long it'll take to send this shrimp packing (getting beat up was not Thorfinn's initial plan; he uses it as leverage after his initial request to see the king gets laughed off and they start beating on him) and getting more and more solemn as the punch count rises. There's a risk of being really self-indulgent when a character is suffering for their beliefs, but the "I have no enemies at all" line is a stunning climax to a long and well-constructed character arc and is one of my favorite badass moments.

I should read this. You're right that it would be very easy to make this self-indulgent and possibly hackneyed, but it doesn't. I think that says a lot for the creators of the book that they can manage that. Look at the way the penny drops for the other men in the third to last page. Many artists and writers would make that some big overdramatic thing, or even throw in some vocalizations. Instead, these men are just stoically understanding his lesson and taking it in, but you can still tell that's the moment when they start to understand that their fight is pointless. It reminds me of the way Osama Tezuka took dozens of overwrought and overtold fables and lessons for his biographical series Buddha, and made them amazing and powerful pieces, usually with little effort.

This was always one of my favorite "badass" moments in Superman comics. Backstory for the 12 of you who haven't seen this before, Mongul (big yellow guy) ambushed Superman with a flower that takes over your mind and leaves you basically comatose, while giving you dreams of your heart's most desired things. He didn't appreciate it.  I was a wee lad when this had come out, and that "Burn" moment still gives me chills. Also, a page or two before that, where Superman wakes up from it. Robin's expression was basically the same as mine when I was reading this issue.

That is such an amazing comic. While I won't say that Alan Moore is the best Superman writer (I say that, but then I am madly in love with "Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow") but man does he make you understand his power level in this book. Also, I love all the small details, like how the "fantasy" sequences have different panel borders for each person the plant is on.

Rockslide's body takes the impact, and his arms help slow the fall as he tries to make them fall slower than how they're actually falling. Given that he's actually a rock gollum, he legs/body could shatter, as he could just reform. I imagine that or just him tying to stop them from falling at full speed at the impact would do it.

Rockslide caught them above his head but didn't stop them until his waist, about an eight foot difference, and at the same time Rockslide's sinking a foot into the pavement. All told they got to stop over the course of 9' instead of the 3-4 inches their own bodies' compression would allow. Assuming Rockslide managed the ideal amount of support as they all fell the force at any moment would be about 3% of if they'd hit the street.  EFB

I've read the comic and seen the episode a couple times, but I just now noticed a change between the two - in the comic, the black mercy gives Bruce a fantasy of hugging his parents, simply safe. In JLU, the entire fantasy - which includes a cut away to a different scene, so I think it lasts a while n Bruce's head - is Thomas Wayne just beating on Joe Chill. Cartoon Batman's heart's desire isn't a happy life with his parents, it's seeing the guy who killed them getting the hell punched out of him
