Except didn't he just get done saying that the Spectre doesn't give a gently caress about anything but murdering people who crossed some arbitrary line? How's he going to protect his loved ones with that?

Because he's describing the Sepctre as an entity. With Corrigan in the blend, he can temper the Spectre and introduce, however minuscule, some manner of mercy to the Spectre's actions. My understanding is the host is the driving personality, with the Spectre trying to subvert them to it's "primary mission". If the host is aware and of strong enough will, they may be able to assert their own agenda in some way or form.

Whoa whoa whoa, we can't have comics about actually REHABILITATING people.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure Dream doesn't give a poo poo about rehabilitation or really relate to humanity very well (see what he did with a woman he loved out of wounded pride). He really only cares about the Dreamlands and he was there to reign in the Corinthian. I always got the sense he punished the "Collectors" because he found them offensive. It usually seems his punishments are meted out to those that offended or attempted (or have) harmed him directly or those under his care.

It's kind of the opposite of that, Diana doesn't balk, she calls him Clark out of habit and he stares her down until she calls him "Kal". He's withdrawn because Lois and his parents have died, and he's shut out his human side because of the pain. Being human means dealing with death and loss, and he can't handle it - he says "They're earthlings, they die." He doesn't want to be Clark if it means feeling their loss.

Even toward the middle of the story he's still running from Clark's pain and treats him like a different person. When he's telling Diana the story about Brainiac he says he hid part of him in a Pulitzer in 'Clark's' apartment.

I seem to recall when I was a kid he was just "The Strongest", but Thor and others of that class could go toe to toe with him.

Well, I'm a contractor myself. I'm a roofer (Dunn and Reddy Home Improvements) and speaking as a roofer, I can say that a roofer's personal politics come heavily into play when choosing jobs. Three months ago I was offered a job up in the hills. A beautiful house with tons of property. It was a simple reshingling job, but I was told that if it was finished within a day, my price would be doubled. Then I realized whose house it was. Wilson Fisk's, the gangster.

The money was right, but the risk was too big. I knew who he was, and based on that, I passed the job on to a friend of mine, and that week, the Punisher hit the house. My friend was shot and killed. He wasn't even finished shingling. I'm alive because I knew there were risks involved taking on that particular client. My friend wasn't so lucky. You know, any contractor willing to work for Stark knew the risks. If they were killed, it was their own fault. A roofer listens to his heart, not his wallet.
