Comixology Unlimited is $6 per month and gives a discount on most major publishers in addition to having a large collection of stuff to read (including some surprisingly good originals). Depending on how much you're reading, it may end up paying for itself.

Last I checked its also still US only

If you've got a library card that gives you access to Hoopla it has a pretty impressive comics collection and at least from the Detroit public library I get 25 borrows a month and can get a bunch of collected editions. Just read all three Batman White Knight series with guided/panel view for $Free.99.

I got into digital comics by reading and trying to catch up on the XMen line from House/Powers of X. I got up to Trials of X before the Marvel App closed. I've been trying to use the Marvel Unlimited app but it hasn't been as seamless and they don't seem to use the Trials of X title releases. What would be the next best way of continuing to read like those digitally?

Honestly? :filez: and whatever cbr/cbz reader you prefer. I have a Marvel Unlimited subscription and I've pirated cross overs before because navigating them in the app is so annoying.

I didn’t even know about the app but I do have a library card so this is great. There’s a bunch of series and mini series for horror comics that are all in big trade backs and I was kind of worried about having space for them. I’ll use this for those while getting physical new issues of on going series. I’m going through the DC Hill House miniseries now on there

I'm taking the Trials of X TPB as Marvel's suggested reading order and it looks like it's crossing a dozen+ books and mini-series.
Some of those links point to Marvel's web index of issues but I don't know if you can use them to read on Unlimited - I'm not currently subscribing.

You don't need to actually read the X books in that order, and I don't think that order really adds anything to the experience. Outside of Swords of X Judgement Day and Sins of Sinister you can basically just read the books you like in order and maybe switch up every arc or so. Like in that list S.W.O.R.D. and New Mutants have nothing to do with each other or Trial of Magneto except maybe an off hand reference to it.

Honestly if you're catching up on multiple x books and reading them chronologically, the "of X" trades are a much better option compared to trying to juggle multiple books in the absolute trash fire unlimited app. I'm not sure how many are actually legally out but :filez: is up to trials 10

I feel like Marvel Unlimited has been better lately with having curated story reading order lists. I know they've done it with some of the other X events within the last few months. I believe they moved the collections to the page (android app here) with creator spotlights, and there should be some in one of the carousels along the bottom of the home page.

Hey anyone who has even a passing interest in Red Sonja and wants to read some of her comics, Humble Bundle is doing an absolutely loving bonkers digital comic collection to celebrate her 50th birthday. It's drat near every comic of hers printed to date (including the old Marvel Comics stuff where she started out) except for some of the newest stuff and some of the inter-company crossovers, all for the low low price of $18.00 (eighteen dollars) :monocle:

It's seriously a totally bananas deal. I already have all of this stuff in print form from over the years and I still bought it for $18 just to have a digital backup in case my house burns down or something.

I agree 100% I'd prefer my money go to a charity partially than a multinational conglomerate solely. I have some medical issues and the guided views on other apps helps me tremendously. But I have a 10"..... Kindle Fire so even full pages I could live with. It's a real pain to get them to get picked up by my Kindle into a reader that works for me like you have with your iPad also.

OneDrive runs on most everything and can help some with the problem. Only need a Microsoft account of any kind. The product is free and preinstalled on later Win10 editions and Win11 and with mobile apps for most every flavor of reader/pad/phone.

I don't know what other apps are out there but I use Comic Flow for cbz files and it works just fine. The only slightly inconvinient part is tranferring from the computer to the ipad through itunes. Its a quick process though.

I downloaded all of them as PDFs, am I better off doing the CBZ if I’m thinking of putting them on an iPad?

She probably originated the style 50 years ago, yeah.

Still cool comics though, definitely not porn. Part of her schtick (depending on the author) is that she refuses to sleep with anyone who can’t beat her in combat (hint: she kicks the poo poo out of anyone who challenges her).

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
The one thing that annoys me about Humble Bundle is that every page is it's own "page" in the digital format. This includes two page spreads. So I'll read a page, think it's a little weird, turn the page, and see the 2nd half of everything I missed.

I keep think I should go into the files and just combine those pages, but :effort:

CBZs are waaaaaaay smaller for basically identical quality. There's basically no benefit to PDF in this case beyond portability.

A nerd thing that doesn't matter for reading books:
CBZs are just a ZIP file full of jpgs. CBRs are a RAR file. You can rename the file to *.zip or *.rar and unzip them. You can take a bunch of JPGs, save them into a ZIP or RAR and rename them to CBZ or CBR. I not a 100% certain of how they order the files for reading, I just do filename001, filename002, etc. But also have done, like filename003-004 for spreads and that sorts them correctly.

Ordering is up to the reader software, it's not like EPUB where there's an internal "spine" telling it what order the files inside should be read in.

Generally speaking it's just ordered based on a lexicographic sort of filenames inside, so just number them in order and you're fine. Stuff like "page004-005.png" works because it sorts after "page003.png" and before "page006.png". The only thing you need to watch out for is forgetting to zero-pad the page numbers; If you have something containing, say, pages 1-15 (rather than 01-15), they will sort as:
code:
1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
which is obviously not what you want.

Some file browsers are smart enough to go "aah, these filenames have numbers in them so I should sort them as numbers rather than as text", but most comic readers are not.

Anyone else having the problem with the DC Infinite app (iPad) where they read some comics, put it away (app open) come back a day later, everything seems to work fine, but clicking read on a new comic just pulls up a black screen? I keep force closing it, then the app fails to launch, then launches fine on the second try. The comics I read are downloaded like 99% of the time.
