My dream app is something like Plex for comics, tracking what's read and unread, gathers metadata, etc.

The closest I found was YACReader. I should warn there’s no multi-user support, so read/unread tracking will get real messed up if you have multiple people. But it can pull data from Comicvine and it has a desktop app in addition to the iOS one.

Has anyone found a good way to read Kindle Unlimited comics on PC? The Comixology reader will show me my purchased Kindle comics, but for Kindle unlimited I need to use the terrible (for comics) PC app or kindle cloud reader. The kindle ios and android readers aren't too bad for comics, but they don't have great kindle unlimited integration.

The answer is probably to do a trial subscription to Comixology unlimited instead.

Yours are considerably more sophisticated than mine (except for the bit in mine that tries to fix cases where things are named, e.g., "Ch.10" - "Ch.10.5" - "Ch.11", which don't sort correctly)! I've spent most of my time working on the reading experience, since I spend a lot more time reading comics than importing them.

So due to a change in circumstances, I think I'm going to have to go digital with comics (I find out on Monday basically). Someone mentioned that there's a browser plugin for Comixology that will download/convert your comics into CBR files for you. Can anyone link that?

Also, is Humble Bundle basically it for a site that sells comics that allows you to download them as DRM free files? I missed out on the Hickman one last month, and they don't seem to have a store, just their sales.

At least I used to redeem those digital codes from the Marvel books.

https://groupees.com has bundles too. Like right now they have a top tier Humanoids bundle with some of the best euro comics ever written.

Certain publishers allow for cbr backups from comiXology. Image is the big one. A few of the others do, too, some depending on the title.

Image comics on Comixology can all be downloaded DRM-free.

Ah, I don't have Image comics through them, since I mainly just used the Marvel Redeem and have that linked to Comixology. Therefore, the backup page was empty. But I could have sworn I saw someone on here say that there's a utility that will just skim your cache or something to get you CBRs from your collection.

This is the one that I use: https://github.com/Cortys/comic-backup

Kind of a pain to set up and it takes a while to scan through your comics, but it works. I just use it to backup my purchases, but it does have the annoying problem of marking each comic it scans as "Read" in your collection.

IUG
Jul 14, 2007

That works perfectly, and wasn't a pain to set up at all. I'm just going to have to go through the 1,222 comics I apparently have on there. I think I only bought like two volumes of One-Punch Man, everything else is just Marvel comics I redeemed from that code. Thanks!

I'm going to have to see if I can run that server side comic server on my Synology drive now...

EDIT:

This doesn't seem to be the case right now. Squirrel Girl #1, for example, is unread still. However the "Scan" button now says "Rescan" to let you know which ones you have downloaded.

I've avoided getting stuff on Comixology precisely because I wanted to make local backups, maybe it's time for me to revisit that decision.

FYI, if I recall correctly this will also only pull lower resolution images compared to the iOS and Android apps, as the webreader has never shown hd comics.

There used to be a Windows app (via the Microsoft Store) that provided HD resolution. They ended support of it at some point though. :argh:

I just pulled the first volume of Squirrel Girl, and the resolution of the first issue is 1073 x 1650 pixels for every page. The CBZ files are 10-13 MB in size.

I also tried to install Ubooquity on my Synology drive, and that failed pretty hard. It seems that no one has attempted in years, the .conf file isn't what the guides say it is, and there's no posts with answer on their forum for anyone who has had a problem with it.

Are there any scripts like that that can download your Humble Bundle books? They have a "mass download" function but all it does is clicks download on all the books and then you have to hit "Ok" a hundred times.

"Metal Hurlant" is Heavy Metal magazine.

"The Incal" is the best kind of space opera: big, gorgeous, and slightly nonsensical.

"Metabarons" is background on the world of Incal, it follows generation after generation of warrior barons.

"The Eye of the Cat" is a quiet and brutal story of a cat.

Everything by Milo Manara is erotica, which is eurocomic-speak for "fancy porn."

ToxicFrog

I'm always down for big weird space opera.

Went ahead and bought the bundle, only to find out that (a) you have to download each of the CBZs individually and (b) they download as "<a bunch of digits>_r.cbz". This is bullshit, so here's a shell script to download them for you, with the correct titles. Export your groupees.com cookies to cookies.txt and then:

code:
wget --load-cookies cookies.txt -O- "https://groupees.com/profile/purchases/<purchase ID>" \
| grep -A5 item-name | egrep '^ ' | egrep -v 'data-platform="pdf"' | sed -E 's,^ +,,' \
| while read title; do
  read tag
  url=$(echo $tag | egrep -o 'https://[^"]+')
  wget -nc --load-cookies cookies.txt -O "$title.cbz" "$url" || break
done

Was there some benefit to joining Marvel/DC Unlimited over just ComiXology?

I don't know much about DC's offering, but Marvel Unlimited gives access to almost everything, but six months behind.

ComiXology Unlimited is mostly just the first arc of stuff. It's more designed as a teaser to get you to buy the rest of the books.

The only other thing I've read was The Cape. It's in the "what if super powers, but in the real world" gritty story that was popular for a while.
