Is studio Trigger doing that LN adaptation this spring or this summer season? I couldn't find it in the OP... so summer?

Dehry posted:It's only just been announced. No date has been set. The manga isn't out until next week either. They put out a preview for the first chapter which is the only exposure it's gotten in the west aside from the anime announcement. We've been talking about it because Trigger is coming off Kill la Kill and their next project was virtually unknown and looked generic. I see. Thanks.

I watched Kawai Complex cause it's by the same author who created Love Lab. And I have to say it's off to a good start. Should you watch it if you liked Love Lab? Ehhh, it's quite a bit different but the humor is still similar. And the perverted roommate doesn't seem to be a pedo. He likes to be abused and insulted by the female cast members though. Akuma no Riddle also has a solid start. It's another one of those highschoolers (have to) play a deadly game shows. What I liked is that all characters were busy showing off how hardcore coldblooded killers they are. And the mystery why all this happening is sufficently mysterious to be interesting.

Mushishi and Ping Pong are shaping up to be the highlights of this season. These are in my three episode test: Soul Eater Not, Akuma no Riddle and Hitsugi no Chaika This is probably mediocre poo poo that I'll still watch to the end: Love Live, Is the Order a Rabbit? and Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

Akuma no Riddle keeps getting more interesting. More dark happenings and pasts have been revealed. And already one surprising turn of events. Edit: Fairy Tail: I really hate how useless Lucy is and how often she has to be rescued. And the series started out so promising... It's problematic alright. I could see which parts people liked when I watched it. Those exist, but they're actually not that good. So overall it wasn't worth my time.

Of course there is moe poo poo. I don't hate moe though. It's ok. The thing is that it has solid character interactions and is an earnest story of a group of students working hard to safe their school, to become good at something and to function as a team. It also has solid humor of all kinds and the fanservice is minimal. I swear if a show with a ridiculous concept has almost no fanservice its a sign that it is good. It also has a character who is a hardcore idol fan and always tries to act ultra cutesy in an idol way and everyone else is 'What the gently caress, girl?' and makes fun of her. Edit: The first episode of the second season was about the leader not wanting to enter a tournament, because she was afraid of pushing her group too hard like last time. The second episode was about having a creative slump and how to overcome it and about team spirit. Lucy Heartfilia fucked around with this message at 09:20 on Apr 18, 2014 |

These shows have passed the three episode test for me: Kawaisou goes for a mix of comedy and some light drama similar to Love Lab. But while Love Lab has a healthy dose of slap stick humor and is generally more comedy oriented, Kawaisou is the exact oppposite. It seems like it might work out so far, but it could still turn out to be underwhelming in the end. Akuma no Riddle is not your average everyone tries to kill each other in a game anime. It's a bit different by making the MC pretty flawed, but still sympathetic, and the damsel in distress is actually more capable than expected. If these are signs that the show is trying to mix up even more things, it could turn from average to pretty good. Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka Standard moe fare. Gets bonus points for having low/no amounts of fanservice. Watch this if you appreciate things like moe, coffee, tea and Japanese sweets. Chaika Although it's a standard fantasy setting, it doesn't paint everything black and white. The protagonists might actually work unwittingly for an evil purpose and their adversaries seem to be the actually good guys. So the premise is intriguing and I hope the show does something with it. Love Live More Love Live. Anime Glee as has already been said in this thread. This is a show that could have had a lot of fanservice, but chose not to. Very commendable! Mushishi Excellent must watch show. Don't ask questions, go watch a beautiful show about science ghosts and human nature. Ping Pong Sports anime with a very expressive and lively style and direction. Everything else is good, but nothing new in my opinion. Another must watch show of this season. Nanana A fun adventure show. It's quite ridiculous and has considerable amounts of fanservice, but it makes up for this by being really entertaining to watch. Soul Eater Not It's kinda more Soul Eater. It even seems to have a story. The characters are alright so far and the cameos of characters from the original show are very welcome. Everyone should watch Ping Pong and Mushishi! Akuma no Riddle and Chaika are two other shows that are worth checking out if they sound interesting. Lucy Heartfilia fucked around with this message at 16:00 on Apr 27, 2014 |

ViggyNash posted:I really liked Love Lab, but Kawaisou feels bland to me. I understand that the characters are all defined by their particular complexes, in the 2 1/2 episodes I watched so far they're all one-trick-ponies with no character beyond that at all. Yeah, there is only a hint of stuff that might happen. Might be good, might be bad. I'm 50:50 on the chance of either happening. That's the problem with drama as it always needs some time to build up and can be hosed up by a bad resolution anyways. What I like about both Love Live and Kawaisou is the warm characterisation of everyone. People are flawed and have problems, but they are still all likeable. I also dislike the fanservice in Game of Thrones. I won't stop watching a show because of fanservice though. And fanservice is an important point of discussion, because there are so many anime shows that rely solely on fanservice and nothing else. That's why shows without it are 1) special and 2) commendable, because they don't rely on a cheap crutch.

Female characters in anime can never have boyfriends or husbands, because then they can't be the imaginary girlfriends of the nerds watching the show anymore. Those people are really broken. Does anyone remember how the author of Kannagi was harrassed by fans until she stopped making the manga, because the fans were outraged that Kannagi actually had a boyfriend in the past? By the way, my three episode tests didn't yield any surprises. I immediately dropped One Week Friends after one episode, but my impressions of all other shows stayed roughly the same between episode 1 and episode 3. Are there any shows that turned out surprisingly good or surprisingly bad when you compare the first impression with the three episode test?

The Devil Tesla posted:I think you're kind of weird for not just enjoying each episode for their own thing, but yes, there are some actually really cool bits of continuity. This includes a recurring character that acts as a really good foil for Ginko, episodes that involve a greater society of mushi masters, and character pasts. It's also cool how you grow to expect mushi or Ginko to act in a certain way and the show plays with your expectations. Yeah, there are tons of connections between episodes. But as far as I know there is no big story arc.

We should try to incorporate some weighting. It might be enough to mark one of the 5 selected animes as best anime of the year. Then those animes marked as best get counted in a separate additional category.

The story was made up on the go and it showed. It's fun and I didn't regret watching it, but overall a ton of potential was wasted. Animation quality was also an issue, but that didn't bother me.

In terms of romance yes. In terms of comedy no. I was mainly hoping for a comedy show with a dash of romance. It's the other way round and I don't like how the romance is done in addition to that.
