Bob Socko posted:I hate Rodney Tom so much that I'm going to volunteer with the campaign of former Kirkland mayor Joan McBride, who's running against him. He's like Mitt Romney in that you're not really sure exactly what he stands for (except rich people). On a personal level, he and his staff have been rude to my wife in professional settings, and without cause. Because he can, and they can. Godspeed, goon sir. That bastard needs to be punished for handing control of the Washington Senate over to the morons. You'd think, well, they're Washington Republicans, maybe they'd be reasonable. NOPE. They're trying to gut transportation funding and restrict abortions. no Republicans anywhere are good, no exceptions.

ladyboy pancake posted:I would like to remind everyone living in King County that April 22nd is the day we vote to either raise taxes or cut up to 17% of bus services. As previously mentioned, Washington's tax system is terrible, but losing the buses will hit people, especially the poor, harder than the increase will. I think it'll pass. Too many people use the buses now. Although, Metro needs to scrounge a little money and do a publicity campaign.

Best Friends posted:Washington, despite going consistently democratic when it counts, has always been very much a 48/52 state (and sometimes even closer) so it does not take much to make a race incredibly tight. Rossi was an okay campaigner, the republicans in general were very strong that cycle, and the democrats who were volunteering and super passionate about democratic causes in 2004 on the ground spent their time being passionate about Kerry/Bush rather than pushing Gregoire would be my guesses based on what I saw but I am no pollster. Yeah, we even had a Republican AG for quite a while. I am so loving glad Rob McKenna lost. Jay Inslee is exactly the perfect model of Washington governor: liberal, boring, and competent. Anyway, neither of our senators has had a competent challenge in a great long while, so Murray and Cantwell will be around until they don't want the job anymore or die. The Republican Party here is a bit of a mess. Pretty sure they're going to lose their tenuous hold on the state Senate. Turnout's not as much of an issue as we've got loving MAIL BALLOTS, HELL YES.

KomradeX posted:I live in New York City and read thinking of moving out to Seattle cause I heard cost of living isn't as high as it is here. This thread is kind of selling me on the idea of not moving out to the Pacific Northwest. Washington is fine, except for traffic, which might have a chance of getting fixed were it not for two factors: 1. Seattle is on an isthmus, offering few to no opportunities for a bypass other than building a big expensive tunnel, which they are doing now. Or were, until the billion dollar drilling machine stopped working when it ran into pipes the people on the project had not been told were there, due to communication failures/bureaucracy. 2. Eastern Republicans have a knee-jerk hatred of Seattle, and have been using voter dislike of taxes to deliberately block transit improvements whenever possible. But other than that, it's pretty cool. Just don't use your car to commute, use public transit. There's a great music scene (I am told - too poor right now to verify that, and living in a suburb of Seattle), a plethora of amazing restaurants from practically every place in the world, many cool museums and art places, being within driving distance of some of the top ten most beautiful places in the whole goddamn country, being a ferry ride away from Victoria, B.C., and a drive away from Bellingham (where you should actually move to, really), mail ballots for voting instead of polling places with long lines, cleaner air than many other major cities, being a train ride away from Portland, but not actually being Portland, a major film festival (SIFF), playing host to The Best Football Team AND the Worst Baseball Team, two zoos in the area (both are good), playing host to a building that looks like crystallized skittle vomit (the EMP), a pretty terrific theater scene, playing host to cultural and ethnic festivals almost every week, hosting major conventions for every manner of dorkery, and there is the SPACE NEEDLE. advice if you do decide to move to Washington state: 1. Do not live in Bellevue 2. Do not live in Federal Way 3. Do not live anywhere east of the mountains 4. Do not live in Vancouver 5. Do not live on the east side of Seattle Overall, if you are interested in moving here, it should be for more than cheaper living. DO THE RESEARCH.

Mojo Threepwood posted:Have many goons gotten out to the San Juan Islands? They are really nice for a weekend visit or even a day trip to go hiking, even riding the ferry and seeing all the tinier islands is a lot of fun too. It would be nice to live there but I think their economy is bit limited, and they lack some modernization. About a year ago the underwater fiber optic line going the islands got cut, and so no one had phones, internet, or could buy anything with a debit/credit card for about three days. The only time I went out there, I got to see a whole pod of killer whales swimming by, therefore the San Juan Islands are awesome.

Living in north Seattle and working in Kirkland has led me to appreciate what a loving housing desert it is up here. Unless you are an engineer or something, then go for it. There are good things in downtown Tacoma, though. I really like the Harmon, and Tinkertopia is rad. Also Grand Cinema is the best movie theater in Washington.

There's a reason Seattle has a popular local band called Don't Talk to the Cops. There's zero accountability, and the culture that led to the horrific response to WTO is still in place, as far as I can tell from the various scandals and how absolutely none of them ever resulted in the culprits having anything more serious than losing their jobs. Personally, I don't like the cops because here in Federal Way, they spend a good solid 50% of their time on speed trap duty, the fuckers. It's not as if FW's a sleepy place where no crime happens.

Seattle can't really hold many more people than it already has, so people that want to move to this area are often forced to live in Everett or Tacoma, both of which are, I think, experiencing significant population booms. Building Seattle on an isthmus must have seemed like a great idea at the time, but now the city is sort of boxed in. Western Washington drivers are terrible because everyone's a passive aggressive rear end in a top hat. The worst situation to be in is at a stop sign or blinking light intersection, because it can easily devolve into a game of politeness one-upmanship. NO I INSIST AFTER YOU. Also turn signals are an alien concept to many people. The un-signaled quadruple lane change happens quite often on I-5.

I'm not even sure Boeing doing this has actual business benefits. The move is ideological, based on the idea that workers do not deserve to have a say, and they should take what they are given with no complaint. Starbucks and Costco have already proved that treating workers decently and making profits are not mutually exclusive, so when the Boeing executives pull this poo poo, it's because they're Randian shitlords. Losing public support and wrecking employee morale comes with its own costs.

Internet service shouldn't even be a thing owned by corporations. In this day and age, it's a critical public service. But, of course I believe the same thing about electricity, water, and phones, and the vast majority of people don't find anything unreasonable about private ownership of the resources, even as they complain about their utility bills. There is a better way, but people are assholes.
