We recruit Shiho and Jayle again, defeating Genevivie in the process. We'll be sending Jayle up this chapter.

We'll end up with a seal value of 20 after all that (-4 for recruiting two Einherjar, +12 for sending one up).

I end up selling a few things for MP this chapter. I mean, I'd been sitting on a few Golden Eggs and Crimson Edges anyway.

I bring Shiho for the Barbarossa fight for one main reason. Unless you're lucky enough to find a Mage Lord in the Cave of Oblivion, Shiho is the only source of Might Reinforce before the Chapter 7 Sacred Phase (or if you're playing on Hard, Chapter 7).

Next, Dipan, where we stomp Barb fairly handily. Twice.

With the Unicorn's Horn, it's now incredibly satisfying to just waste the annoying Blood Stealers in the castle with Gravity Blessing.

We then go on to solve the mystery of the past, and return to our own time.

There's a change in Hard Mode - aside from one of them near the start of the castle, all the Harpies in Dipan Castle are replaced with Evil Eyes.

They have considerably more health, but singly they're not that much of a threat - we've taken down tougher in one round. Magic works well on them, so a good Celestial Star or Meteor Swarm will easily take out half of their life. Physical attacks will still work decently.

Yeah, that's a little creepy.

Like the Hel Servants, the Evil Eyes' gimmick is their ability to Restore dead allies.

Unlike when we fought the Hel Servants though, we now have a reliable source of Great Magic, so it's easier to take out both of them in one round if you weaken one first.

The Three Mages fight is largely the same.

Namely, Reflect Sorcery putting the kibosh on them.

I'm going to love that second Fairy Ring. Sure, I could just buy one, but I'm saving my MP for something. In fact, we'll do it now.

Starting from this chapter, we can buy the Orihalcon from the shop, for a very costly 100,000 MP. If you did something like miss the ingredients for the Creation Jewel, like sending up the Fairy Bottle for Asgard, this is your chance to get it again.

Now that we actually have the Creation Jewel already, we can do something else with it.

Namely, transmute it into Gram! 2000 ATK power on Chapter 6? Yes please.

In theory you could get infinite Grams this way, but they're not exactly cheap.

And time for our Hard Mode dungeon.

OST: Crumbling Identity

I actually really like the Sunken Shrine. It's got a nice dungeon music (linked above), the puzzles aren't too hard, and it's just challenging enough without being tearing your hair out in frustration.

As one might imagine, we're going to be going in and out of water a bit, and facing underwater based creatures.

In conventional RPGs, you might be forgiven for thinking they're weak to Lightning. Actually, most of the enemies in the Sunken Shrine are weak to Poison and Holy. Poison Blow and Mystic Cross both work well here, and Glare Swords will kill most enemies in one hit.

We've seen Giant Squids in the Cave of Oblivion before. High health and they can deal some heavy damage to one character, but with the aforementioned weaknesses they're not difficult.

For the first part, we'll just have to step on pressure plates to get the statue heads to drop low enough for us to hop on; once they rise back to the surface we'll just jump to the other side.

Red Lobsters (...), like their other crustacean brethren, have high RDM, but magic will pierce their defenses. The Glare Sword still works well on them.

First, we drag this stone slab to the left, so it won't block our progress later.

We then have to hang on this clockwork mechanism till it drops down to the bottom.

Finally, it's this mechanism. We can push in or pull out the basins from either side. Here, we'll push them both in...

...and the shrine starts filling up with water.

With the room now submerged, we can jump through the water to reach the top passages. (Still no explanation why Lenneth can't just fly through the dungeons...)

I think Bream Giants can inflict Darkness, but they're pretty weak anyway. Ropers behind them also have low health.

...They're pretty disgusting when they attack, however. They can inflict Paralyze and Petrify, as well.

One of the rooms has a copy of the Dark skill. We've already learned it, so we can transmute it with the Creation Jewel into a nice skill, Reverie.

As the description says, Reverie will have a shadow copy of the character attack slightly after it, also adding to the hit count, and doing about 30% of the character's damage. Shadows can be killed, but they can take a bit of punishment, and will come back in the next battle anyway. It takes a bit of CP to max out (720), but we're not exactly short on that, either. Only Warriors can use Reverie (so no Archers).

You can see Arngrim's shadow here. Anyway, the tough enemy for this dungeon are Inferior Eyes (we've seen them in the Cave of Oblivion as well). Being upgraded Evil Eyes, they have no weaknesses and are pretty tough. They're also notably more resistant to physical attacks, so blow them away with Great Magic.

Taking the top passageway, we'll find this room and hit the crystal twice to shift the alignment of the room with the stone slab.

And back through the rooms, collect some treasure, then go back and readjust it with the crystal.

Pull out the basins this time.

This time, the water drains.

And we can progress further in.

Inferior Eyes start to become annoying when they're backed up with more creatures. We can't reliably hit the Eye at full power (though we can still do a decent number because we've got two archers and a mage), and the Eye will keep Restoring its dead allies (it can only do so one at a time, however). While wearing it down to the point where a Great Magic will kill it, forcing it to use its turns on Restore is still better than letting it attack.

This next part's not so obvious. First, you have to create a crystal and slash it, picking up a fragment and taking it with you into the water.

Then when you're under this switch, you have to release it and have it float up, hitting the switch.

Next up is a reused puzzle, from the Oddrock Caves.

Namely, the 'bounce the beam onto the thing' puzzle.

Gill-Men are weak to Poison (but not Holy). They have the least health of anything in the dungeon, and aren't really noteworthy.

Onto the subject of re-used puzzles, we have one from the Cave of Thackus. Again, we bring a crystal fragment into the water...

When we get to the other side, we release the fragment and quickly jump onto it before it floats out of our reach, letting us jump to the other side.

Just a few more puzzles to go. Once we enter this archway, we have to quickly jump up through the water.

Do it quickly enough, and you'll make it to the top right before the walls close in on you.

And just up ahead is this dungeon's Flame Jewel, right in the open.

For the final puzzle, we have to bounce the beam off two crystals again. This time though, as the beam's hitting the second crystal, we have to shatter it into dust, which will deflect the beam onto each of the eyes in turn.

There are no less than three Inferior Eye groups in the room with the save point.

This is actually a pretty annoying fight with double opportunity for Restores. The best way to go about doing this is to use a Great Magic right off the bat, then holding off your attacks, chipping away at the other Eyes til your mage recovers her CT, then do another one. If you have enough MAG, you should be able to kill all of them with the second.

It's very satisfying when you pull it off though.

Not complaining about this either.

In any case, boss time!

:drac: I've been waiting all this time...!!

Undead counting the passage of time? Don't make me laugh!! You still have human traits, creature.

:drac: Human, you say? I have passed beyond the realm of such small-minded, short-lived fools!

You shall pay for the sins you have waged. In the name of Odin, I shall sanction thee!!

Fifty-five thousand days translates to roughly 150 years, 212 days, and 12 hours.

The Wraith is a tough fight, if you choose to fight him fairly. At 100,000 health, he has more health than any boss we've fought up to this point. He'll throw out a few spells, sure, but the worst part of it is what he does every other turn.

:drac: Hark, lightning that writhes within the ashen depths, descend down as a storm upon my foes! Gravity blessing!

Well this is going to hurt.

Ouch! Paralyze Checks are a good idea here, as they'll cut Lightning damage by half, cutting the damage from a painful ~60k to a more manageable 25-30k. You'll still desperately want to Heal after that, though.

If one wanted to cheese this fight, the Holy Water of Mithra does 100,000 damage to it. Which, coincidentally, is how much health it has.

I was silly and decided to do fight it fairly, however. You practically need Guts for this one, and almost certainly Auto Item. I imagine it could be possible without them if everyone has a Paralyze Check, but it's going to be rough.

It's also quite resistant to physical damage, if you were wondering. Having Sorcerers around helps to circumvent this, even if they're unlikely to be able to withstand a Gravity Blessing.

:drac: It is... i-inconceivable! How could pathetic little... I have fallen.... nooooo.... ahhhhh!

The Magic Charm immunizes its wearer from magic damage, but has a 25% chance of breaking.

The Reflect Armor has 1500 RDM and cuts Holy damage by 90%. Not bad for Warriors. Slashing Sword "Farewell" has a measly 320 attack power, by its damage increases by 5% for each hit it does, up to a maximum of 200%. Still not really a match for the Creation Jewel swords, but it does sell for a decent 10,000 MP. The Tear of the Cosmos transmutes into a Holy Water of Mithra, so you essentially get one back if you used yours on Wraith.

We'll get into Chapter 7 next update, where Things Happen.

False. As we've seen, the game is more than willing to throw multi-target one-hit kills even WITH proper defensive gearing. Against that kind of mindset, locking down Guts+Auto Item become less 'cheating' and more 'required'. Do you REALLY want to chance that 40%, even x4?

I beat the game, on Hard, with all hard-mode dungeons and the post-game, without using Auto-Item. And I did not think it was especially difficult. The only fight I remember having especial difficulty with was the Barbarossa fight, which is probably because I spent time reviving characters and thus couldn't wear him down before his Great Magic.

I think both sides are mildly overstating their claims, anyway. Playing without Guts/Auto-Item (or even just Guts) is quite possible, and not even that much more work, but there's about two main-game hard mode bosses and a few post-game ones that throw party nukes at you with regularity, meaning the chance of a no-effort wipe is there.

The short form is that if you know how to actually control the battle system (not just mashing the buttons like every 12-year-old playing this game did :downs:) you don't really need the safety net. If you've already gotten the Creation Jewel, you don't need it even then until the post-game.

Legacy of the Past

Jayle doesn't have anything that new yet in out Sacred Phase.

Good... sharp as a razor. She will serve me well as usual.

And she gets +2 HV.

Lucian finds a wounded soldier similar to Lawfer, but gets a -10 penalty instead of a -5 for some reason.

The 'special mission' is just him cleaning up the storeroom.

We go through Freya's request again, but at the end of it, since this is Hard Mode, something else pops up.

Some say she inherited her powers of prophecy from Mimir, the ancestor of the Vanir. Her name was Lyseria. Even with her death, her soul was not allowed to die. It is sealed inside the crystal of a massive Magic Gem. The ruins where it was sealed are called 'Arkdain' by the Midgardians.

Lenneth, you must go to the ruins and free the sorceress, Lyseria's soul.

I'm going to be putting some of this stuff out of order, but it'll all come together anyway. We'll begin by recruiting Suo.

Let's get our dungeons out of the way first.

Since everything's weak to Fire, Calamity Blast roasts them pretty well.

The Infernas sword from the Citadel of Flame also kills enemies weak to Fire in one hit. It does damage the user for 3% of their DME each time it's used, but it's a small price to pay really.

Something else I found out today: Hellish Invitation can Paralyze too. Mandragoras are dumb.

You know what's better than killing Mandragoras in one shot with the Infernas?

Legitimately killing them with Calamity Blast with one strike. Not so tough now, are ya?

Again, we run it twice, sending up the Flame Gem and getting the Elven Bow for Lenneth.

Let's just get our Hard Mode dungeon over with, too.

I don't like the Tombs of Amneti. It's more chaotic than the Tower of Lezard Valeth, except now everything in the environment can hurt you.

There are quite a few treasure chests found on top of ledges like this. To get to them, we have to do a trick we did in the Palace of the Dragon - explode a crystal on the ledge, then hop onto the dust and up onto the ledge. Of course, most of them are monster trapped.

The chests are typically stuffed with Undead Slaves. Mystic Cross usually wipes them out in one shot.

When they get the jump on you, they like to fling spiked ledges onto the entire party. It's got a fairly good shot of Fainting.

The second room has a Flame Jewel right up there. Don't think it's going to be that easy though - this dungeon has two Flame Jewels to grab.

We have platforming! We have flamethrowers!

There are some spots where jumps might seem a bit further than possible - usually, placing a crystal on the block and jumping from there will do it.

Recolours, but nothing we haven't seen before. Wise Sorcerers are weak to Poison, Lizardmen get taken out by Holy.

Don't get intimidated by his size.

There are several Dullahans in the dungeon. While they have quite a bit of health, they're not really threatening.

Mostly because they take hits about as well as a wet sack of potatoes. Even if I hadn't killed him that turn with Guilty Break he would have died thanks to Janus' Poison anyway.

Spike platforms are really the least of our worries in the dungeon.

Basilisks can hit pretty hard, but are easy enough to take out in one round. For some reason, they can't Petrify characters.

You get some pretty nice looking attack motions with archers on airborne opponents.

On this part with the double spike traps (that move close towards you when you jump towards them), you might think that you'd have to jump past/on them then onto the block on the right.

But it's actually much easier to just build a ladder on the wall to the left.

Stealer Robins can get annoying because they have pretty good defenses and are flying. Stun Magic Icicle Edges usually incapacitate most of them.

When you pick up this Blue Gem, the door leading into the room shuts.

To get out, you have to place a crystal fragment onto the pedestal it was sitting on.

And that opens the door again.

More flamethrowers! Woo!

Finally, a save point. This dungeon is so large it actually has three.

This giant stone head will move towards you. To get past it, you have to duck and slash to destroy its little beard, then stand up and slash to destroy its chin. That lets you slide under it.

To get past these double spike traps that move towards you, you have to stop one by slashing at it, then jump in the space between the two when the other one moves past before the first one starts moving again.

I might be bad at this, but I could watch that all day.

I mean, it didn't exactly do wonders for my health, but still.

More precision jumping! You have to jump from a crystal onto the top of the moving spike trap, then onto one of the top ledges.

Also, falling spike platforms that you have to jump onto as they rise so you can get to the top.

I'll be honest, the environment's far more dangerous than the enemies. At least you can't die from the former.

This is arguably my least favourite part of the whole thing. You see those little triangles under the doors? You have to jump onto their tip. You can reach the first one by using a large crystal and two crystal fragments.

Then you have to jump to that second one. (The first door just leads you to where the bottom doors go to.) This took me ages to get down.

And save point number two!

We'll pick up a Red Gem and get out in a similar fashion to how we got the Blue Gem.

For this part of the dungeon, there are floating heads, kind of like the ones in the Clockwork Mansion. If you touch one, you get teleported to another room. We'll talk about that after we deal with the boss. Past here is also the second Flame Jewel.

They stop appearing once you reach this room.

Ram Guardians make a reappearance from when we first saw them in Brahms' Castle. As a reminder, they know Possess, so kill them last.

Finally, save point three.

I mean, just look at this. In any case, we have one last riddle to solve before the boss.

Hmm. Hmm. Well, I'm stumped.

All three are the same answer

...Anyway, boss time.

We have to place both gems on the pedestal to activate the coffin.

:drac: However!! Today, on this spot we will rebuild our kingdom!! We will restore it to the dazzling splendor of old!!

But do you have the luxury of the tens of thousands of citizens needed to restore these crumbling walls?

:drac: How rude to speak of luxuries!! The king and people work for each other. My death as king will elevate the noble souls of the citizens and lead them to paradise. And paradise is... this place... Amenti!! Can't you hear it?! The joyful voices of the people.

I hear the screams of the dead! Are you drowning in happiness?!! The undead should be... destroyed!!

I dunno Lenneth, I mean, you were the one who traversed through the trap-filled tomb to open his sarcophagus in the first place. If you'd just left well enough alone there wouldn't be a problem.

Our boss immediately starts the fight by throwing up a Reflect Sorcery, while his minions smash us with a double Funeral Procession. We even get Lenneth's 'By the holy laws, you shall be obliterated!' line here, which is cool enough to hear that I'm linking it again.

There are two Undead Slaves blocking the boss, but they're easily dispatched of.

Akhetamen isn't really that tough a boss. You can use the Holy Water of Mithra on him, but it's not really needed. He'll throw out a few spells, and he will cast Heal when at low life.

Of course he has a Great Magic.

:drac: Ye of detestable name and virtue! False apostle! Thou are bade back to the abyss! Seraphic Law!

Akhetamen will cast Seraphic Law every four turns. It's not as bad as Wraith's, because he casts it less often, he has a lower INT score, and Holy protection is much easier to find and in larger quantities. Mighty Checks, Reflect Armor, and the Robe of Bryttain will all cut the damage by 90%.

Just because he made us go through that horrible dungeon, I'm smashing him with a Spell Reinforced Celestial Star at full power.

Eat 170k worth of damage, mummy guy.

:drac: My reign is eternal! The world shall once again quake before the might of Akhetamen! Hahaha... urrrrrgh!

Good experience, but that's not the only bounty today.

We have no less than five treasures!

The Richebourg's only purpose is to be sold for 17,500 MP. The Mask of the Dead King can be worn by everybody and has the highest RDM in the game, but it makes the wearer weak to Holy. The Ambrosia is a one-time use item that increases the maximum DME of the character by 6000. Like the Richebourg, the Ruby Music Box is only for selling, but for only 10,000 MP. Finally, the Bracelet of Basilisk cuts down on Poison damage taken for the wearer.

Getting out can be almost as confusing as getting all the way in in the first place.

You can also speed things along by letting the floating heads touch you.

You'll find a room where you have to hack masks to escape. You'll also get 20,000 event experience, for what that's worth.

Now, let's go take care of Odin's request and head to the Arkdain Ruins.

Remember the giant crystal in the boss room?

Listen: Lyseria

The same. My master has need of your power. If I may beg you, Lady Lyseria, to join me.

I could not control my power. I was in despair... I took my own life, and sealed myself within these ruins.

There is no place for me in this world, indeed, in any world! For so long, I have hoped and prayed for someone with the strength to obliterate me.

Lyseria is voiced by Rachel Lillis, also Jelanda and Mystina.

Lyseria could theoretically be threatening, knowing Great Magics like Seraphic Law and Celestial Star... but like Gander, she's incredibly frail, having but 10,000 DME and so gets squashed in one round.

And with that, we recruit Lyseria, no more fanfare.

Age: Unknown
Class: Sorceress/Seer
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Homeland: Unknown

A woman born with the power of prophecy. It is rumoured that she is a descendant of the Vanir Goddess, Mimir. She despises her own power and has sealed it within herself.

Lyseria is arguably the best female mage, having a great starting INT score and enough AGI to match Jelanda. There's really no arguments against using her, and she comes with Might Reinforce, to boot.

While Lyseria is technically transferable, she's glitched - while you can send her up and get her scenes during the Sacred Phase, for some reason she won't rejoin the party at the endgame, even if she survives. As such, we won't bother with transferring her, but here are her traits anyway.

Not as strong as you'd expect.
You're missing a trick. Akehtamen has unique boss music.

Hell yes I'm going to turn my avatar into an ad for it.

The Hard-mode dungeon is a pain, especially if, like me, you missed one of the two gems and had to backtrack through half the freakin' dungeon to get it. :argh:

Something I meant to mention earlier, too: Lenneth's Seal Value also affects her pre-fight quotes. When the seal gets weaker she'll start saying things like "Is this truly justice?" instead of her usual quotes.

Thankee kindly.
I'm pretty sure 'Is this truly justice?' is one of Lorenta's win quotes. You might just be mistaking it because they share the same VA.

And I'll get that boss track into the update sometime later today. (I always forget something!)

I just wish there was a way to get "Come to me dark warriors, battle awaits us!" on command.

Even at 60%, it's more than enough to kill everything the game ever throws at you. Adding auto-item on top just goes from "broken" to "outright cheating."

One seems easier than the other to convert into holy water, so I would go with that.

fighting bloodbane normally, required those two skills, and two angel curios since he's just that amazingly powerful.
