Barnsy posted:Might be something to do with Kimi's preference for steering feel. They might have a different steering rack/settings in there that make the car less responsive. Mate and I were walking down the pitlane on Thursday and we stood in front of the Ferrari garage. There were distinct differences in the wings they'd given Kimi and Alonso. We figured that part of the time difference was because they were testing different parts in practice. Alonso may well be faster than Kimi, but I can't see him being slower than Massa.

I decided not to rush the track this year as I had the wife in tow this time and it was odds on she'd get trampled to death. I did have the race radio going during the podium interviews and laughed out loud when Ricciardo advised he was tripping balls. Very impressed with Magnussen and Bottas. Disappointed with Ferrari. Its going to be an interesting couple of rounds until one German or another stitches up all the races and makes the season a farce again.

I bought it at the track. They had flat brimmed caps with either the Spanish or Finnish flag on it. I ended up getting the Alonso cap shown. $50.

Hammer Floyd posted:Right, so Vettel is Schumacher without the grudging admission that he's actually a really good driver? Sort of. Depends on whether you believe Schumacher was 'great.' He certainly put in the hours (constant testing) but he also benefitted from bespoke tires, the best car, a weak teammate, a ridiculously rich team, and at the time, the FIA was called Ferrari International Assistance only half jokingly. In their own ways, you could make a rational case that neither was/is as great as their results suggest. It's an inevitable byproduct of the money, politics and ever evolving technology of the sport.

Claire Williams biography would be a interesting read. Growing up with a very successful F1 team owner quadriplegic father with all sorts of notable F1 drivers coming and going. Then the rise within the business for herself. I'd be happy to see a second era of Williams success under Claire's direction. It'd be nice if Frank could see a few more wins or championships with his daughter at the helm before he dies.

Frank can't possibly have that many years left in him and if the Williams team is on an upward trajectory when he eventually shuffles loose his mortal coil then she could sell the team for a fair bit... or better yet, keep the team so I can get into every paddock on the calendar. I guess what I'm saying is that I could use a sugar momma.

Good on him for overcoming his crippling crappiness to hold it together for an entire race in the first half of a season which was literally a lottery though.

I love some of the onboard shots while they're coming out of the corners. You can really see them getting much more oversteer and having to balance it way more than last year. fake edit: OH GOD ALONSO/RICCIARDO. real edit: Ricciardo keeping Vettel very honest at this point. I wasn't sure about how he'd go against Vettel honestly, but so far I'm impressed. Carth Dookie fucked around with this message at 09:29 on Mar 30, 2014 |

NtotheTC posted:That was his third season right? You don't get to make slight errors due to "inexperience" at that stage. Like i said, you get one chance to prove you have what it takes. He had the fastest car on the day, and should have won the race. Your memory is playing tricks on you. He didn't have the fastest car. It started out as a dry race, which became progressively more damp as time went by. He was on the right tyres at the right time and held it very well, up until his slight loss of traction as he came up along side Hamilton. Half a second before or after and it would've been fine. In a proper dry race he would have been mid pack, simply because the car couldn't do more. Besides, that's not the first or last time he's done a brilliant drive. Frustrating Fernando in Korea last year springs to mind immediately.

You know, people rag on Bahrain (and for the political situation, I agree with much, but not necessarily all of that criticism), but I recall the last couple of Bahrain GPs being quite good. Ok, not white knuckled, heart in mouth stuff, but I remember kimi and grosjean going 2 and 3 there in 2012 and some quite feisty moves from Rosberg there, following his first win in China. I find the back part of the circuit quite interesting and I suspect all those bastard negatively cambered corners are going to be interesting given the sand, extra torque, and lesser down force this year. Not to mention the heat cooking the frailer engines. I know Bahrain gets a rep for being boring and when they ran the extended track, that was probably true, but I'm looking forward to it this year.

What the hell happened to Whitmarsh anyway? I know he's quietly been shoved into the background, but I've not heard squat about what he's doing right now, or if he's even at McLaren. I'm also a little uncertain as to what has happened to Eric Boullier... I kind of hope Ron Dennis threw them into a cage together and advised that the survivor gets the top job. That would be cool.

AgentJotun posted:Plenty of Alonso's good starts don't happen off the line. He is in general very good at picking where to place the car through the first few turns. Hasn't had much luck with it so far this year though. Alonso's starts have usually been pretty good. I don't know if its just Ferrari's development of the car for the starts or what, but I still recall in 2012 and 2013 that he might only qualify low in the top ten, but he'd usually make up 3 or 4 places by the second corner. Every time. Even Massa managed quite a few spectacular starts. As for Mercedes, I'm kind of hoping they taper off after mid season, as they seem to have done for the past couple of years. In an ideal world, Red Bull would be too far behind because their fuel sensor appeals fail, and McLaren, Ferrari and Williams catch up.

Every man and his dog could have finished first at some point during the race, Alonso's desperate attempt to keep Vettel as far behind him as possible, Webber trying to run Vettel off, Schumacher bending over and letting him through, Kimi going off road. It was magical. Except for the outcome. Alonso's thousand yard stare is burned into my memory.
