insurance for Microsoft's next attempt

or a hedge against the inevitable failure of the Windows platform

There is too much institutional knowledge and infrastructure to support windows game development that seriously planning otherwise would be a waste of time. Literally it would take decades to erode the ecosystem to a point where new devs stop considering windows as a candidate platform to learn the craft and tool makers stop optimizing for windows.

If they are going to make a new push for more revenue from gaming, it will be for phones.

I think Valve is just hedging their bets and making sure that OpenGL has a place on the consumer desktop, particularly the Vulkan API. Apple is already trying to build out their new graphics API so I doubt they're seriously going to keep OpenGL up to date and optimized on their platform.

vulkan will probably be very attractive to developers due to spir-v if nothing else. the api itself basically works the same way as dx12, but spir-v is so much nicer than the undocumented d3d9-era 'everything is a vec4' bytecode that dx12 still uses.

it's a little early to pronounce opengl dead on apple platforms

  • metal predates vulkan

  • vulkan hasn't even been released

  • apple and and apple's graphics vendor (powervr) are both part of the group developing vulkan

  • opengl is still the only cross-platform api

  • opengl is also the api targeted by all pre-existing osx software

valve has its own reasons to do things, which may or may not make any sense

I remember when people were making GBS threads on each other over HDR rendering in half life 2ep1.

Now valve has their source 2 engine with vulkan and VR

someone is waiting for their technology to sit still for a moment so they can stop scrapping the current HL3 work to take advantage of shiny new rendering tech

What did 3D realms release after DNF? Admittedly, not much.

What did Valve release after HL2ep2? Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 (although they just published the former), Portal 2, Dota 2, additions for TF2, CS:GO, and so on. Big games with big returns. I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with another series or just spent their time on steam box and DotA2, and the HL series will just be a long running gag where they promise something big but never nail down any specifics.

Valve has no financial incentives to make hl3.

And like, can you imagine a hl3 with light rpg mechanics and cheevos..? It would be bad. But can you imagine a shooter in 2016 without them? It would not be popular.

Half life would be super dated and the only way to release a successful half life 3 would be to release a super revolutionary game. We may be past the point where releasing a groundbreaking fps is an achievable goal, even for valve

microsoft leaked some pending nvidia drivers with vulkan support via windows update so it's probably not too far off. the final spir-v spec was quietly released a few days ago too.

because the half life story and universe is not particularly interesting. half life is only notable because with each release, it advances gaming considerably.

a half life that does not revolutionize video games is not a half life game, it's just a game with a science nerd named milton friedman hitting things.

iirc they also kinda wrote themsevles into a corner by crossing together the stories of hl2e2 and portal 1 -- part of the resistance is going after tech on the borealis, a aperture science boat that disappeared out of dry dock, that i think you may encounter the dry dock of in portal 2

then from what i could tell they realized they didnt really want to do this but are stuck with it to at least some degree

i think valve has a large portfolio of games that would be better used for pushing vr thing sales.

If you believe the narrative that gaben actually cares about things, he won't make half life 3 unless it's actually gonna be great, which is why it will never happen

even if he doesn't give a poo poo, using half life to hawk vr headsets is just gonna piss off nerds. why do that when you can just release left3Dead and make just as much money and not piss off nerds

Remember, Vulkan is literally Mantle with the gr prefix changed to vk, a different shader IR and some small changes to make it multi-vendor.

Valve is basically uninvolved. Less involved than Google, even, now that Vulkan is the replacement 3D API for Android.

SPIR-V and the OpenCL extensions for SPIR-V were finalized a couple days ago; the GLSL 4.5 SPIR-V extension is still in draft; Vulkan itself is still in (secret) draft.

funny, thought you were older

I used MINIX because 386BSD wasn't even a thing yet, much less Linux

it was rather nice on a fast 25MHz 68030 with 5MB of RAM, given it was designed for a 4.77MHz 8088 with 256KB (at least once you rebuilt the system with long filename support and installed GCC)
