just spent my afternoon trying to update my arch linux, finally getting it working (except for ethernet, but wi-fi worked??), installing CLion, not able to open half the menus for it because dual monitor linux, giving up, getting the fedora image on a USB, failing because the menus wouldn't render, rebooting into Windows, setting it all up, switching back to Fedora's live image, have it not able to recognize my current booyt partition (and only can use wi-fi), and then it crashed after I manually told it how the devices were setup.

this is why people use ubuntu/mint, ugh.

i don't know what you could do with windows that would fix the menus not rendering in the fedora installer short of fixing the code, and i'm not sure why the text mode would make it recognize stuff any better short of installing the os yourself. sorry you had a bad experience on your bespoke setup, but i dunno.

huh? the menus work in windows, and presumably would work in anything that wasn't arch. fedora's menus crashing in their graphical installer, well, i dunno what can be done with that either. sucks. text installer would ideally work around that issue, but who knows what else will crash.

you're running the fedora installer in arch? wtf?

..from the USB drive? who runs OS installers within another OS? wtf

EDIT: hooray, i just wiped my boot partition, installed fedora and pointed it there, and then restored the windows boot drive, and then it ..worked I guess. hooray? well let's try Fedora now.

Any hints? I tried extensively to make this work so I could have jenkins workers try building on osx, but at the time the available guides were all too out of date to work but too new for anyone to care to write new ones.

Even if the upfront cost is negligble, keeping one of these running as a build machine for osx is a terrible, high maintenance waste of time.

hey now, vi wasn’t state of the art in 1976, it was just a full-screen editor knocked together atop the ex enhanced fork of the ed line editor so its authors could use a couple specific dumb terminals

it was otherwise a total throwback to 1960s editors like TECO

state of the art editors in 1976 looked a lot more like modern emacs with features like modeless editing (no separation between entering text and entering commands), structured editing, and font support that significantly improved efficiency versus 1960s-style modal editors descended from those developed for teletypes

computer history poo poo like this is super interesting to me.
