Phoenixan posted:your better off buying a this is more or less the idea. i buy a machine that has pre-chosen hardware that should be no problems for linux then if i decide i hate myself i end up installing windoze osx would be viable if i didn't feel so pretentious just looking at them

Notorious b.s.d. posted:i also prefer to have something that works when i install it. so i usually install a set of signed binaries from a supported repository with a vendor phone number i can call if it breaks don't forget if you need gcc to make a file because some idiot baby thought that would be a cool thing to shovel on the user installing his/her program infernal machines posted:lol, at that point i'd just buy a macbook and get a linux that isn't complete poo poo. the point of using linux is that i have a random castoff laptop that i need to use for one specific issue, and it's poo poo for even that meh macs are moneypits unless you are doing graphics or whatever

It's not that I don't like Unity, or I have bad feelings about Shuttleworth, or that the logo doesn't agree with me. It's much more fundamental: The Ubuntu model for development is broken. interesting

can't get yeoman to play nice with ubuntu for some reason. can't get get angular seed clone to recognize its own template and it isn't immediately apparent why. mean.io's file structure is bloated and poo poo i have to be missing something unless the only acceptable experience for generating working angular front end applications is OSX ![]()

my thoughts exactly. just going to make it myself. apparently when using yeoman some generators, like the angular generator, when yeoman goes through its bootstrapping process it needs to perform some actions, write or execute, that it doesn't have the permission for. However yeoman is constructed to not allow you to run as root... i don't care anymore just going to make a template project from scratch

Squinty Applebottom posted:it appears that thousand or millions of developers actually manage to use to just fine, but i dunno if it is the same issue I am thinking of, i.e. having to download xcode to get the gcc compiler just to use the makefile utility, then it is pretty annoying and why wouldn't you include it by default with the OS? not unusable just dumb

Been trying gnome 3 for the past couple of months and I like it better than unity. Also giving Firefox another try because I made a friend that works there. Firefox has crashed on me more than a few times and so has flash. Guess I need to figure out why this is happening. Welcome to Linux I guess Thinking I might kubuntu for no other reason than hope it doesn't have my web browsers crash

Notorious b.s.d. posted:there are no "new computer users with no past experience," they do not exist. 76% of homes and 100% of schools have computers in them already, and approximately 0% of them are running gnome 3.x. every user who touches gnome 3 has a prior experience with a system that is not gnome 3 I am the children born with computer skills Fun story no one will read: I was a computer science tutor in college and one day I get a 101 student who calls me over to his desk. His computer is at the login screen. He asks " what do I do?" I respond " your teacher gave you credentials to login with" his response " how do I login?" A literal thing that happened in 2005
