i couldn't find anything on the website to explain *why* a ppc laptop is something that needs to happen beyond "ppc is a cool architecture." any insights?

you're underselling the clowniness:

- they've taken €7100 to produce the block diagram, but they're holding the identity of the chips in the block diagram hostage until they get more money. want a powerpc laptop someday? give us some money, no we won't tell you what might be in it, if it ever happens at all

- their next funding goal is just to draw a schematic. not to actually make anything physical, just a schematic.

- mechanical engineering? lol what's that, clearly if you can make a motherboard that's the same as a whole laptop right?

- this throw-money-at-us website isn't doing anything (not even the block diagram) themselves, they're contracting it out to acube systems. or maybe the funding site is just a front for acube, idk.

now, acube systems isn't an entirely unknown quantity. they are a 'company' that has an actual history of 'successfully' designing, manufacturing, and shipping powerpc motherboards. they haven't done anything recently but they have actually shipped 'real' products.

but. what market does acube serve, you might ask, and why did i use all those scarequotes?

it's because acube serves the amiga 'market'. it is almost certain that acube has never made a real profit unless they found some non-amiga customers for their previous boards. also, modern amigans are more than willing to put up with janky broken poo poo, which is a good thing because companies like acube tend not to have the engineering talent and resources to make things which aren't janky and broken.

so. this powerpc laptop project is a pseudo crowdfunding front end to siphon money to amiga fanatics who have long lusted after the holy grail, a powerpc laptop that will show the rest of the world they should be running amigaos too.

it has to be powerpc because the clownshoes software company that managed to land itself in pseudo-control of amigaos in the post-commodore era sabotaged attempts to move amiga users to x86 a long time ago. why did they do that? because they're the kind of stuck-in-the-1990s nerd who is ideologically opposed to x86. their customer base isn't any different, it's all people who would die of shame if they ported amigaos to standard x86 hardware and it was better there. they're still clinging to the amiga tribal identity of ~custom chips~ which make amigas better than pcs. it doesn't seem to matter to them if their modern hardware is objectively junk, what they want is something different enough that they can invent a story in their heads which makes it ineffably better.

no i am not making this up that's really the way these people think.

so, that's why powerpc

lmao outstanding

just discovered a nice interaction between dropbox's panel icon and the autohide behavior for xfce's panels. if you click on the dropbox icon while the panel is displayed the panel flips out and cycles rapidly between hidden and visible until you click somewhere else.

linux

e: lol it sometimes keeps going even after i click somewhere else.

if you mean that it cuts out you probably just want to up the number of samples requested with sdl_openaudio. windows is actually pretty good by default on that stuff, as the thread doing the audio operates under a separate scheduler (the multimedia class scheduler service) tuned for that task

in a stunning turn of events, I turned to lunix for its superior driver support

window updates started breaking my touchpad because of reasons. i couldn't just install the manufacturer's driver because samsung doesn't support win 10 on an eight year old laptop and the win 7 one doesn't work anymore. the generic synaptic driver installed, but didn't give me two finger scroll. I fixed it once but it broke again and I forgot what weird magic I did and lol at constantly janitoring my touchpad

ill have you know that gnome on the phone is hugely important. I have an early version of the librem 5 and although there are some rough edges the free/libre gnu/Linux experience is just as beautiful and far more useful than ios. because you aren't locked into apple's walled garden, you can install a huge portion of tens of thousands of useful, full-featured programs. thanks to librem and gnome I can read my doujinshi on a best-in-class manga reader and emulate atari jaguar ROMs with 100% fidelity. and it has a user replaceable battery so I can swap in a fresh one if I have to be out of my house for more than three hours

All of that in the only phone that respects your digital freedom

welcome to the future
