The "Commi Chameleon" reference made me laugh, also it sucks to have half your money stolen. If you lose to Man O' War do you actually lose your tanks and weapons, and if so does beating him get you them back? Oh and I vote the Rodina be renamed to Putin.

Honestly? I have no idea. I'd imagine so, though, because behind him are two completely empty tents that feel like they must have some purpose.

Robo Ben-Kei actually. Final Fantasy Gilgamesh is more heavily based on him than the actual Gilgamesh. There's been a fair number of Japanese story and mythology shout outs, Orochi most notably.

Does Benkei usually have 6 arms? It seems more like a reference to a reference than a direct reference.

It's a little bit of both. The part about collecting a thousand weapons is definitely Benkei, but the actual design is probably a nod to Gil.

Well the armored getup with white hood and the geta is a pretty common benkei portrayal.

But yeah I can see the Gilgamesh similarities since the multi-armed Benkei-esque design is pretty much unique to Gilgamesh.

Update Twenty-One: Revenge of the Old People

So, once we head back to Dowan, we get 38000G for Man o' War. And once we head in, an old man bumps into us again...

Enemies Near The Bridge

Man o' War

Old Man: Who're you callin' an old geezer, ya hag?
: What!? I'm only 60! ...If you round down. Ah, that's not important. Hurry up and give the kid his money back.
: ......
Old Man: Gee willikers! Ya caught me red-handed!
The stolen money was returned to you!

The old guy runs off.

: Hmph, a small-timer like that is not worth the effort. You should be more alert, kid. How did you not realize that your pocket was being picked? That guy belongs to a band of thieves called the Denture Squad. Don't let them fool you just because they're old.

So, the reason we came to Dowan for this is simple.

The octopi have overrun Dowan! They're pushovers, though, we can wipe them out in a single turn.

But once we get down to the last one...

(Click here for the boss fight.)

It starts off normally.

The octopi are jokes. However, once they're out...

The Krak Cannon (Kraken, see) is...well, a rather monotonous fight. It's big and tough and you shoot it with main guns. It has a single attack: Missile.

It can do decentish damage, but that's about it.

Not a problem, really. We get 40,000G for the Krak Cannon. (And a new target of the week, finally.)

Once that's done, we head back to the bridge, where we can find Rosa trying to find the tank we already took.

: It's completely unfair, Rosa...
: I heard you defeated a wanted criminal here, Master Max. Most impressive.

We also get an email!

So, back to Dowan.

Old Man: A hunter should always have a ship or two at his disposal! Thanks again! You really saved us!

And now we can drive our own boat! It will appear at the nearest beach when we teleport, and it can be boarded from any beach or dock. It can't fight, but when we get attacked on it we can fight in our tanks, so...no problem. If we were to die or lose a tank while on it, though, we'd have to salvage it at the salvage shop from the area of the lake where we died. But because this means aquatic foes are intro'd, it's time to make a weapon...which I'll promptly forget to use most of the time.

This is exchanged for the Brionac, an SE that is quite good at killing underwater foes. We also grab Resurface on Misha - Recycle's basically no longer needed, but dragging things above water can be handy. We can also stop in at Dowan's bar.

: You're that kid I met earlier. Still around, eh? I'm surprised a careless kid like you can survive as a hunter. You wouldn't have lasted a week back in my day. Lucky for you the world's gotten a little tamer.
: ......
: Me? I'm a retired hunter. I'm here to take care of a family affair. Anyhow... Good luck, kid.

We can also finally advance MC Hamir's plot. You remember him, right? We gave him a pile of cash to find us a tank. Well, he's on the train, in the casino.

: ......
: You! Funny to be seeing you here! What the unexpecting surprise!

: Ah, a tank! Yes! If you are wanting of one, then the West is the place for being! That is where I am to be going. Do not have worry! I will be finding for you the very good tank! Yes, very good! I will see you when later comes!

And he runs out. Well, I'm sure he'll get us a tank soon. We can find him again in Alice One, at the dog fights.

: ...Huh? Oh, it is you! You scared my wits away from me!

: Oh, a tank! Yes, yes! I am collecting the informations. There are being many people in this place, so I will be finding one soon! Do not have worry! I will see you when later comes!

And he runs off again. We can find him in the bar at Lorelei Bay.

: ......
: Ack!! Wh-Why do you talk to me with such suddenness!? It is bad for my heart! Very bad!
: ......
: Well, uh, you see... My money is, um... ......
: ...It was stolen! Yes! That is a truth!
: ......
: An old man bumped into me and fell, so I helped him to be standing, you see. The next time I noticed, my money was not being on my possession! I listened to the rumors that there are very old thieves around here. The old man must be one of them! It is very sorry, but without money I cannot be finding you a tank. I wish very much that I can be reunited with my money, but I am not being very strong to face against the criminals...
: No money means no looking for tank, my friend... I did not spend any of the money you gave to me,

You gave MC Hamir 12501G!
: Very good. With this, I can be resuming the search. I will see you when later comes!

And he runs off again. 12501G isn't much, but now it's the principle of the thing. Those old people have stolen our money twice!

Time to get it back.

Rich Old Man: I can even restore broken figurines.

This guy is an assembly shop for figurines!

There are many rooms here, mostly empty. Here on this floor, we can get a Big Medal and a Bronze Medal. The Bronze Medal is an item to be sold, and increases Courage by 10 when used. There's also a Tile Pack XL.

Talking to any old people starts a fight. They're pushovers, but they look amazing.

Retirement Compound Enemies

Upstairs, we can grab an Old Document, which tells us that "putting the four maps together will lead you to the legendary treasure." We also get a Map Scrap which reads "...946..." Now we head back down and fight the old man in front of the door. Behind him, we get a staircase down, which leads us to some juice and this old lady.

We take her out, getting an Energy Capsule and another staircase down.

This lower area has Photo 6 - another photo from a lady - and a pair of Energy Capsules, plus some boxes.

Note: Pickpocketed from a squirrely, bucktoothed, crooked tank salesman.
You got 12501G!

Note: Pickpocketed from some hunter kid.
You got 15538G!

If you didn't talk to MC Hamir, there's a Big Medal in his box. Same with if you didn't get pickpocketed. However, if you avoid getting pickpocketed, you can't fight the boss here...and once you loot the box, that cash is gone, even if you only got a Big Medal. Same with MC Hamir's cash - because you have to give him the new cash to get his plot going. Personally, I'd rather have my money back. Anyway, once we're done looting the lower level, we can find the aforementioned boss.

(Click here for the boss fight!)

: This place is only for the elderly, so go home.

: Heh, so a kid like you is a hunter? What has this world come to...
: ......
: Are you here to fight us too?
: Well, I won't be beat by a runt like you. Sorry, but you're goin' down!

Helga and Willie are one of the tougher fights for this part of the game. See, Helga starts out of range and Willie starts stealthed. None of our weapons work here except the Dog Tazer, and the dog has this issue that it will aggro on one target and not attack any other - and it aggro'd on Helga, who it can't hit, rather than Willie, who it can.

Willie uses his Machinegun to do heavy damage to a single target.

Helga does the same with her missiles. The fact that both are single-target is the key. We can keep their target alive...

While the other two use the Hound Bombs to take out Willie. Hound Bombs hit stealthed enemies. Once Willie's taken out, Helga will advance but enter Stealth.

At the point, the Dog Tazer goes to town on her until she unstealths.

Short work from there.

: Hey kid, where are your folks? There are ungrateful brats in this world who abandon their parents, just because they've gotten old and become a nuisance. Can you believe that?
: *cough*
: I recruited seniors who can still fight to help take care of the others. I don't mind being wanted by the law, but who's going to watch over them when I'm gone?

At the back of the room, we can get a Playbuoy. It is an "adult fisherman's entertainment magazine" which contains "A scantily-clad girl catching a fish on the cover. It looks like Helga."

This room, by the way, is where they made the old people power suits. We can get some Assault Gear back there - the armor they sell in Lorelei Bay. Anyway, once we head out, we can get 50,000G for beating the Geriatric Duo. Now, it's time to sail.

This camp is right near the Retirement Compound, but can only be reached by boat.

Enemies on the Lake

Obviously, this camp has a fire truck. It also has a shop that sells some great items - the Bunny Ears, which are a great female-only hat, the Remote Wrench, a great anti-air weapon for mechanics, and the Nameless Blade, which we've only had one of so far.

Trader: It's not a tank, but I might part with it fer... 30000G.

Trader: You must be loaded! It's been a pleasure doing business with you. Well, here you......

: How 'bout it?
Trader: Heh, well... I would prefer to do business for a higher price, but this guy did come along first, so... I guess it's up to him.

: ......
Trader: I see... Then, let's do this: You two wait for me to contact you, then come back here. I'll listen to the maximum prices you're both willing to offer me... And, I'll make the final decision then.
: ...What if I'm willing to go even higher?
Trader: Heh, by all means...
: Understood. Well, I'll see you later, Max. That vehicle's rare, so I won't give it up without a fight...

North of the camp, we can get an L3 Chip.

(Click here for the boss fight.)

Unexpectedly, on the way back to port, I got jumped.

Hydrobug is kind of a weird boss. He can and will wreck your vehicles completely, but he can't actually hurt our guys. He likes to alternate between being underwater (and thus unharmable except via the Brionac, which I forgot about) and in the air (and thus pretty dodgy.)

Here's a better view. Anyway, he has just one attack: Fire breath.

This attack will do massive damage to the tanks - something upwards of 600. And the tanks are our only real way to damage this fucker. However, it's all fire damage, and we're wearing anti-fire Protectors. So this guy literally can't do more than 1 damage to the actual pilots. This becomes a seven minute battle of attrition while Misha repairs Max's tank over and over.

Hydrobug

From here, we take a brief detour to Monkey Mountain, where the trader will assemble a map.

The Priceless Map reads: "I hid the treasure at Junk Mountain. The combination is 2946..." So, it's off to Junk Mountain.

It's very heavy and worth a lot of money if sold. Anyway, we head back to Lorelei Bay to see why we need that fire truck.

Trader: Now, much of the first floor is buried. Since the windows are boarded up, there's no easy way in. But, you might be able to get inside through an upper story window or from the rooftop, if you had a way to get up there.

Trader: I guess it's a moot point, unless you can fly... ...or have a really long ladder.

Anyway, the actual trigger for the fire truck sale is us taking a nap. So we do.

30 real-time minutes. Once 30 minutes of game clock are gone, this offer expires.

: It's hard to maintain 'em, but they have a lot of options tanks don't!
: I do say, the fire truck really does sport a ladder, you know.
: *chuckle* Did you take out a second mortgage...? ...You're gonna need it.
Trader: I was going to wait a bit longer, but since you're both here... Let's start. First, you'll both say the price you're willing to pay. This isn't an auction, though, it's a one-time deal. Since the chick offered to buy it second, we'll start off with her. That OK with you?
: ...Not like it'll make any difference. I'd pay 50000G. Top that, Max!
Trader: Your turn. How much are you willing to pay? It can't be any less than 50000G, obviously. If it is, well... Then it's going to her, got it?

The answer is obvious.

Trader: Looks like it's yours then, Kid. Sorry, Lady. I did it fair and square.
: ...Oh well.
: You coulda asked to borrow some money, Rosa...
: I buy things to make them mine. What good is it if I don't use my own money?
: ...I guess.
: Hmph... I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed, but... I guess it's OK that Max will be using it. Maybe you'll let me try it out, sometime?
Paid 50001G!
Trader: It's all yours...! Enjoy it.

We're finally replacing Sam. The Fire Truck isn't a tank that's really ever going to be your main, but we need it around and it's a decent mule.

Seeya, Sam! Now, the interesting thing about the Fire Truck: it has no Main Gun mounts. It can't ever have any. However, it starts with three SE mounts and two Sub Gun mounts. You can swap one SE to a Sub Gun mount, if you want to have 3 Sub Guns. (Which, obviously, you would, if you used it.) The lack of Main Guns, though, cripples it in the long run.

Next time: Climbing ladders.

Sure, you can give name suggestions. I've been not asking them actively because we're in the part of the game where we're starting to go through tanks really fast - that should change soon, though, when we finally get our near-final loadout.

Update Twenty-Two: Grinding On The Waves

Outlaws I Forgot To Show

Our first thing to do now is to prepare. We have the Fire Truck, but we're nowhere near ready to take on the building we now have access to. So, instead, we're off to Scavenger Isle.

Occasionally, on entering or leaving town, a siren will start and monsters will attack. They're just local octopi, we've seen 'em before.

Mercenary: Oh, you're a hunter. Sorry, kid. You won't be able to hunt around here.
: ......
Mercenary: Well, a while back, there was this guy who decided to hunt for monsters here. He ran around all day long shooting at everything. That drat fool almost brought down the entire island! So now, the soldiers arrest anyone who tries to hunt, here.

There's not anywhere to hunt, anyway. Scavenger Isle is just a town.

: Scavenger Isle is a man-made floating island. Once people discovered it, they started living here. But, since there are so many monsters, ferries steer clear of the area. But, this is a great spot for hunters, I bet! Well, that's about it. I'll catch you later!

Odd, though. There's a ferry booth right nearby.

Receptionist: No ferry stops at this port... ...What's that? Why is the information booth open, then? Well, because... I'd be outta a job if it wasn't...

Oh. There's a Big Medal by some tubes near the warehouses. If we head into one of the warehouses...

Trader: I don't think anyone would mind if I took a few items, here and there... Hehehe!
Worker: C'mon, man. If you knew whether that stuff was actually valuable or not, you wouldn't have been sent here in the first place.
Trader: What're you talking about!? I know what's valuable! Besides, the guys back at Hell's Keep would've already rummaged through these goods.
Worker: Yeah, but that doesn't mean anything... Those guys are brainless morons who only know how to fight. There's no way they can tell the difference between pyrite and gold. They can't even distinguish a fossil from a two-year-old bone. I mean, those guys think ethanol and alcohol are the same thing!

We can get a Healing Drink and an Ali Baba Vest here, too. The Ali Baba Vest is the local chest armor and a good upgrade.

Worker: Well, there's not much around here in the way of entertainment. But, it sure is relaxing.
: ......
Worker: We drill oil here and ship it to the refineries on the mainland. I've been working here for a long time; I clean the drills.
: ......
Worker: Oh, you're a hunter? I hear that being a hunter is a sure way to die. What a dangerous job... I'd be scared to death. Well, I guess people die here, too. Some die from falling into the ocean; others die from inhaling toxic gasses... Still, with all the safety rules and regulations, it's getting harder and harder to die around here.
: ......
Worker: Well, one time during a storm, a few of us had to go out onto the deck and put the tools away. This one guy didn't want his feet to get wet, so he glues his boots to his rain pants. I told him that wasn't such a great idea, but he wouldn't listen. Well, the deck was slick from the storm, and as he was moving a tool, he lost his footing and fell into the water. His boots must've weighted him down, because he sank straight to the bottom. You see, we wear steel-toe work boots. And since he glued them to his pants, he couldn't get them off in time. It happened so fast, there was nothing we could do to save him... What a shame. Man, he sure loved that glue; he always sniffed it during his breaks.

In the garage, we can pick u[ the Dragunova Rifle, a gun for Charlene. They sell it around here, too. We can also buy Ground Armor - a new anti-electric Protector - and can get another Healing Drink from the second garage. The local tank shop sells a good engine and main gun upgrade, plus an SE that hits all underwater enemies.

: I heard this town was in the middle of an ocean, so I expected to find a wide variety of seafood. Such was not the case, unfortunately...

If we head over to some oil drums, we can get a Big Medal and also push them around.

Old Man: They all have the same nostalgic look on their faces... ...It's as if they found a toy they used to play with when they were kids.

I have no idea. In the bar, we can find the next dance minigame.

There's also folks to talk to and music to illegally download!

Worker: That's good. You're a rather promising young man. Most people are unable to work here because of all the pollution.

Worker: Oh, they transport all kinds of goods, now. But back in the day, the only thing they transported here was water. You see, the water here is contaminated, and back then, we didn't have any purification machines. So, the only way to get clean water was to import it from the mainland. But most days, the ocean was so rough, the transport ships couldn't make the trip. Ironic, isn't it? We're surrounded by water, yet we almost died of thirst.

Man: Well, I don't believe it. Because when people receive the freedom they so desperately want, they don't know what to do with it. Indeed, it is a rare person who knows what to do with a gift like freedom.

: Well, as for me, I finally found out where my target is hiding.
: ......
: Do you remember why you became a hunter? I'm sure you do. Just remember, whatever happens, don't ever go after a relative... You'll regret it...

Worker: That's a good attitude, kid. I guess you wouldn't be able to do much damage, anyways. We just thickened the concrete barrier surrounding the area. Now, it'll be able to withstand cannon fire!
: ......
Worker: We've been trying to fix this place up for a while, now. You know, restoring buildings, paving roads, laying concrete... It's been taking a long time, though, because whenever we set sail to buy materials, the water gets rough, and we have to turn back. And when we do make it there, we spend all our time mending the boat so we can make it back.
: ......
Worker: But, it's so cold in the winter, it's hard to get any work done. Nails freeze, and the concrete won't dry... Not to mention that you can't move your fingers, because they're frozen.

Man: Yeah, that's the same way I feel about it. We're going to be good friends, you and me.
: ......
Man: Well, Scavenger Isle is an artificial island that was constructed to house an oil platform that drills and produces oil and natural gas. Thre are a bunch of wellheads on the platform, and the drills can access reservoirs at different depths. It's quite a magnificent sight to see.
: ......
Man: It's all about positive thinking. If we drill believing that we'll strike oil, we will. If we don't believe we'll find anything where we're drilling, we won't. But, we really can't afford to come up empty. Oil is a costly business, both in terms of money and human life.

Man: Yeah. We ship most of the bodies back to the mainland. But, sometimes no one claims a body, so we have to bury it here. We're starting to run out of room in the graveyard.

Mercenary: Then, when the wind begins to blow across the ocean toward the shore, the water gets choppy. By mid-afternoon, the waves are so big, when they crash onto the shore, it feels like an earthquake. But, we're in the middle of the ocean, so we don't have to worry about that.
: ......
Mercenary: Yeah, but we're still affected by it. Sometimes the waves are so big, the supply boats can't dock. And without daily deliveries of water, we start to run low. We can purify some water from the ocean, but not enough for everyone. All we can do is conserve our supply and wait for the waves to die down.

There's a Big Medal in the tower by this guy, and a Tile Pack XL in a nearby house. Next we stop by the Hunter's Office.

We get paid our 80,000G for taking out the Hydrobug.

: ......
Soldier: Standing guard on this remote island is so boring! These last three months have driven me insane. I'm never coming back here again! That's not true. I'll end up coming back when my money runs out.
: ......
Soldier: Well, one month I was assigned to boat patorl duty. I'm deathly afraid of the water, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a few drinks before my shift. You know, to help calm my nerves. Well, I was feeling pretty good... until the deck started spinning, that is. And then, on top of that, I got seasick. But I was so disoriented, I couldn't get to the side of the ship... So I just kept throwing up on myself. The other soldiers never let me forget about that day. They call me Private Puke.

Now, if we head for the bar in Lorelei Bay...

: I have some business to take care of, so see ya around, kid.

We'll catch up with her later, I'm sure. Now it's back on the boat. Imagine an hour of grinding and hunting.

The gun is a good target-all main for AA tanks, and makes a good fourth main gun for the Whirbelwind. The Iron Bikini is great armor for women.

More Lake Enemies

We're hunting for an Outlaw, but it took forever for him to show up. I started the hunt at level 80 or so.

(Click here for the boss fight.)

Catsub is...a catfish submarine. That's about it. He can shock the entire party with Mega Jolt if he's on the surface. Also, as a note, he needs to be hit with /RUN as sometimes he will flee.

Once he dives underwater, he'll spend a few turns doing nothing as he prepares for his next attack, which would shoot a powerful torpedo. This gives a few free turns to hammer him with anti-underwater weapons, then drag him back up with Misha. He can, on the surface, also fire his machine guns.

Overall, mostly annoying for the time it takes to find him, which will wear your tanks down.

Yeah, we ended that fight 24 levels above when I started hunting. We're now ready for the abandoned ruin.

From here, we head downstairs.

While less powerful than the Nameless Blade, the Demon Sword can hit stealthed foes, and so is very handy in this dungeon. From here, we take the elevator down to the basement.

The S Tank is exceptionally good, and will be staying with us for...probably the entire game from here on out. It is probably the Strdsvagn 103, a post-war main battle tank of the Swedish Army that remained in service until 1997. But now we have to get it out of the building.

This is a one-way hole.

And after we drop off this tank, Rashid has a new ride. Back to the dungeon!

Looting the various identical-looking floors, we can get a Mechanic Kit, Photo 9 and a Gibson from one area of lockers. Photo 9 is of a woman and has on its back 'Until the very end...' We can get an Energy Capsule, a Tile Pack XL and a Strato Grenade from another area. Then it's time to face the actual reason we came here. Well, besides the tank.

(Click here for the boss fight.)

Commi Chameleon is auto-stealthed. This means that everyone but the dog and Rashid are going to be hurling Hound Bombs at it, while Rashid uses the Demon Blade and the dog has the Dog Taser. Commi can hit pretty hard, too, since we have no tanks to take hits for us.

It's a nasty hit, and it'll wipe out Protectors easily, so healing is important. However, Commi has very little HP and so we clear him out fast.

We can also grab a Hound Bomb from nearby.

Enemies of the Sunken Ruin

Upon leaving, we get yet another challenge email.

It's time to head to our next destination: Fort Gears.

Guy: The town above us is called the Antitank Fort. Those folks up there don't have any appreciation for tanks whatsoever. You're better off not going up there.

: Are you here to find a new vehicle, as well?
: Oh, hi, Max! Isn't this place the greatest!? Everyone here loves tanks, so I'm having a blast! ...My sister's not in a good mood, though. She was hoping to add a new tank to her collection, but it didn't work out.
: Did you say something, Carl?
: Um, no, I didn't say anything.
: That's what I thought. Hello, Max. I heard tank enthusiasts gather here, so I decided to stop by... But apparently, today is not my lucky day. The leader of this town is a retired hunter who owns a Maus, a heavy tank from long before the Great Destruction. Only a handful of them were made, and they were all prototypes. Until now, I just assumed that all of them had been destroyed.
: It's amazing! the tank is in perfect working order. You can take a look at it in his warehouse, if you want.
: ...I tried negotiating with him, but he insisted it was not for sale. I'm heading out, since there's nothing else for me to do here. See you later.
: *chuckle* You know how my sister is. It was nice seeing you, Max!
: Please travel safely, sir.

They leave, and we head into the bar, where we end up walking into a discussion in progress.

Middle-aged Hunter: He's totally taking advantage of us tank-lovers!
Hunter: Dammit! I've had enough of that bastard! First, I'm gonna find 'em, and then I'm gonna kill 'em!
Leader: ...I placed a bounty on that con artist's head a few days ago.
*whisper* *whisper*
Leader: What that man has done cannot be forgiven by us tank-lovers. Yes, the victims should have been more cautious... However! The evidence has been weighed on the scales of justice, and that con-artist has been found guilty! Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, I am here to announce that, in addition to the monetary reward, I will offer my beloved tank to the person who captures that outlaw!
*whisper* *whisper*
Leader: That criminal must be brought to justice! That is all. Dismissed!

Leader: You're a hunter, yes? And, I presume you heard the announcement about my tank... Well, I wanted you to know, even though you're not a resident of Fort Gears, you are still eligible for the reward. But, you better hurry, I have the utmost confidence that someone will capture that con artist very soon.

This bar has a jukebox to download from and a drinking game. Not much else. We can get a Tile Pack XL from the hotel upstairs.

Maintenance Man: I keep her in top-notch condition; she's fully operational!

We'll get you, Maus. Some day.

Old Woman: That's what I like to hear! A true hunter loves tanks!
: ......
Old Woman: Of course I love tanks! In fact, when I die, I want to be buried in a tank!

: Fort Gears is home to the most die-hard tank-lovers. Some of them tend to get carried away, though. Ahem! Anyway... This town is situated right below the remains of an old overpass. Belive it or not, a place called the Antitank Fort is up there. That's where people who aren't very fond of tanks settle... To put it bluntly, they downright hate anything to do with tanks. I wonder why they don't live further apart... I guess it's not that simple. Well, that's about all I know, so I'll catch ya later!

Hunter: At one time, this town was full of treasure hunters. Now, it's just a transfer point between Hell's keep and Lorelei Bay. A lot of people who work in those towns commute from here.
: ......
Hunter: This town was originally founded by a bunch of hunters. They set up camp here and went looking for treasure. This area was a gold mine for hunters back then. But nowadayas, Hell's Keep is the place to go to make money. You shouldn't have any trouble finding it, it's not far from here.

We stop by the Hunter's Office for bounties.

Then back to talking to people.

Old Man: I finally came up with a great idea: When customers make a purchase, they'll receive a ticket. Can you guess what the ticket is for?
Man: ...Uh, no...
Old Man: It's for a lottery drawing! People love lottery drawings! Customers will make purchases just to get a ticket! I'll increase sales ten-fold!
Man: Now that's thinking outside the box! You're going to be the shop owner of the year!

This man's house also contains my favorite item.

The local garage only sells a cold-elemental SE weapon and some decals and flags. However, we can use the vending machines to get Mirror Armor, which is a Protector that blocks beam damage.

Next time: Dr. Optica? Who's that?

Looks like you've got some broken BB Code. How much of the map have you explored so far?

I have gotten quite a bit of the map - I'll show you guys next time I update. Technically, we are fairly close to being able to complete the game, but there is going to be a fairly large chunk coming up where I gently caress off from pursuing the end and start just doing some stuff I've left off doing. Gift-giving, more challenge fights, events that are locked off by some of the other events I haven't done, that kind of thing. I want to hit level 120-130 or so before I do that stuff but it might not end up that way.

Speaking of dogs, how's our laserdog doing intelligence wise? We been raking in the deluxe dog food?

About the same as always, I need to go buy some bulk purchases of dog food. Enemies stopped dropping them regularly.

Theres surprisingly very little overarching plot in here for a JRPG.

That reminds me. When we dug up all those tanks from the desert, did we make sure to disinfect them thoroughly?

It's a lot like the old NES and early SNES rpgs where you got a basic story, a world map and just got turned loose to go explore and maybe you'll stumble across the plot at some point, who knows?

I wish we had more games like that in general; it's nice to not be railroaded from point to point all the time.

Steambot Chronicles felt somewhat like this as well, even if there was an actual plot that you followed. It's just that it was so much more fun to fart around and enter different tournaments and play the stockmarket. It's a shame that freeform RPG's aren't more popular in Japan since I kind of enjoy japanese developers take on the genre.

Yeah, broke my heart to hear that it was cancelled. Steambot Chronicles was quirky/janky as hell and the load times were abysmal on the PS2 but it had charm and plenty of fun in spades.

The controls were pretty horrible, but I still appreciate SteamBot for giving you a LOT of freedom. The Way of the Samurai series lets the player go pretty wild with the story too, but they tend to have really small world maps which can make them still feel a little restricted.

The S Tank is exceptionally good, and will be staying with us for...probably the entire game from here on out. It is probably the Strdsvagn 103, a post-war main battle tank of the Swedish Army that remained in service until 1997. But now we have to get it out of the building.

Seeing this tank makes me kind of happy.
