The official story goes like this: After 2004, Libya wasn't a place so much as a mass nuclear wasteland after a conflict with Isreal, and decades later a couple of corporations caught wind of some long-lost weapons lab. They all sent out recovery teams to get the goods, but when they came into contact an all-out war exploded in that plot of sand. The media caught wind of it and broadcast the battle, garnering enormous ratings. That's when the corps realized they stood to make more money off broadcasting fights between their security forces than whatever might be buried out in the desert.

Now the Corporate Court holds an annual event called the Desert Wars, with skirmishes staged year-round to keep the hype up and the training current. The Desert Challenge is the main event, and every AA-Corp is invited to the four-month season. Each team establishes a base in the desert, and receives its own list of mission objectives, from cracking enemy hosts to seizing landmarks to rescuing hostages, and a complex rating system determines points gained from objects and kills. From the pre-season matches to the final battle that decides the winner, it has it all: grudge matches, intrigue, story lines, special effects, and enough fatalities to keep you glued to the trideo for four months a year. It's the biggest sporting event of the year, dwarfing Soccer and Urban Brawl in ratings and promotional tie-ins.

INTRODUCTION

You've been accepted into the first of three Ares-fielded teams, known internally as Alpha Company. You're officially members of Platoon A, Squad A3, focused on and responsible for small-team assaults and combat objectives. Your first event is this year's Desert Challenge, which will run from 1 April 2072 until 31 July 2072. New primary objectives are issued to the team every month, with secondary objectives issued every two weeks, and a scoring system convoluted enough that you've never seen the whole thing explained in one place. Ares Macrotechnology's Alpha Company has won three times in the past two decades, so you've got some big boots to fill if you're going to live up to the name.

It's 28 March 2072, the last Monday before the games begin. All the paperwork is signed, and all the correct people notified of the "Life Waiver" you've signed. You're in Tamanrassat, a city that stands half-empty for six months a year, and swells with every weapons dealer on the face of the planet the oher six. It's the kind of place where crates of black-market Remington Shotguns, forbidden in almost every country in the world, are sold for 20,000 nuyen a dozen down the street from the Ares showroom floor where you can see the latest in military-grade hardware. And where there's enough money that the world's wealthiest aristocrats can indulge their darkest fantasies, and enough media coverage that everyone will know they were there.

You've already done your participant interview with Angie Ankh, and Ares has given you full access to their gyms and training facilities. They've also given you a generous 2000 nuyen per diem, wired into your account at midnight every day until April first. As the sun sets over the scalding desert of Algeria, you relax in the finest lounges and nightclubs in the city (and maybe the world). You've got less than four days until the games begin, and training most of next week.

Then your commlink buzzes.

Alpha Company, Squad Alpha-3,

Ares has been notified you have all arrived. You've certainly familiarized
yourself with the coming week's schedule, but it's attached in case you
overlooked it. That's not why I'm writing. I've recently been notified of a
worthwhile opportunity in Tamanrasset, and wish to act on it this evening.
It seems like a good opportunity to test your team synergy. Please be at
Ares Training Facility B by 10 o'clock. 20000 nuyen payment.

Sincerely,
V. Kantor

HOUSE RULES.

There will be a few other changes, because SR5 has to get house-ruled into a playable state, but that will be dealt with as they come up.

To be updated as the game proceeds.
- MGs have normal recoil (not double).
- MMG and HMG weight requirements are 4 and 6, respectively.
- Magical Burnout costs 'what it would have been': if you dropped from 4 to 1 Magic due to essence loss, it costs you 25K to go from 1 to 2.
- Attacking as per Multiple Attacks with two different weapons types: use the lowest of the two dice pools, applying all modifiers to both, i.e., if you attack with a grenade and a machine gun, compute both pools, take the lower, and split that for your attack.

Run For Your Life

I think that 5 Init for moving any amount of move left for your turn is stupid. So it's going to work like this: if you'd like to Run for Your Life, you pay 5 Init and then make a Sprinting test. Every hit on the sprinting test would grant you the original move speed you had, i.e., if your Sprint is +2 and you get three hits you may move 6 meters. If you still have Walk movement left, this counts toward that. If this would make you run, you're running. If you are completely out of movement, this counts as sprinting.

Example: Gater has a walk/run of 8/16, and a Sprint of +2. He has moved his entire walk speed of 8 meters this turn, but isn't running yet. Slip has a walk/run of 8/16, and a Sprint of +2. She has run a total of 15 meters. Some chummer chucks a grenade at the two of them, and they both use Run for your Life. They roll Sprinting + Strength as normal. Gater gets two hits, moves 4 meters away from the grenade, and is considered running for the rest of the round, having moved a total of 12 meters. Slip gets four hits, and moves 6 meters to cover for a total of 21 meters of movement. Slip is now considered sprinting for the round.

Availability and Purchased Goods

Purchasing goods will proceed with the availability timetable as described on p. 418 of the Shadowrun Core with the following modifications: for every two net hits on the acquisition test, the time it takes is reduced by the interval given.

pre:
Gear Cost Delivery Time Interval
     < 100 6 Hours 1/2 Hour
       100 - 1,000 1 Day 2 Hour
     1,000 - 10,000 2 Days 4 Hours
    10,000 - 100,000 1 Week 12 Hours
 > 100,000 1 Month 2 Days
Fencing Goods

Fencing goods works as before, with the following changes:

1. The interval for the extended Etiquette + Charisma [Social] test is double the interval listed in the above table. The target is 10 + (Avail / 2), rounded down.
2. The final price is .7*[Item Price] ± 5%x[Net Hits], where Net Hits is an opposed Negotiation + Charisma [Social] test.

If this proves to be open to abuse, we'll revisit it.

Second Chance

When using second chance, apply the Rule of Six to the dice you're rerolling. As an example, if you roll 20 dice and get 5 hits, then decide to use Second Chance, reroll the 15 dice and reroll the sixes that occur on only those 15 dice.

Rigger Mounts and Recoil

And standard or large weapon mount is treated like a tripod for the purpose of recoil compensation, for a total recoil compensation of BOD + 6 for any weapon mounted on a vehicle.

EXTRA STUFF.
To be updated as the game proceeds.
Stoner-Ares M107 HMG
ACC 5 (6) / DMG 12P / -4 AP / FA / RC 4 (8) / 50m or 100b / 16F / 16200 (after discount)
Smartlink, Detachable Tripod
Ares Avalon Missile System
Ares Avalon: Acc 5 (6) / Missle / - / SS / - / 1 (ml) / 12F / 1350 (after discount)
Smartlink*, Airburst
A one-use missle-launching system with shoulder-mounts and a fantastic Smartgun-lite system. Because it's a one-use tool, the people at Ares have stripped down the classic Smartgun system to its most basic components: an AR rangefinder and a mechanism for remote detonation.
The Airburst works like an Aztechnology Striker. You gain an accuracy bonus for using the Smartlink system, but the normal wireless bonus for using a Smartlink system has been disabled.

Ares/Pancor Jackhammer 2
Acc 4(5) / Damage 12P / AP -1 / SA/FA / 2 RC / 15c/28d / 14F / 3000 (2700 after discount)
- Gas-Vent 2 System, Internal Smartgun System, Imaging Scope with Low-Light Vision
Incendiary Grenades
DMG [Special] / -6 AP / 18F / 200.
The incendiary grenade bursts and spills napalm in a 6m area that burns for 2d6 combat turns (p. 171 for Fire damage rules). This fire may not be put out with water.

I don't know what to put here. Guys? GUYS?!

Name: Nina Walker
Age: 29
Metatype: Dwarf
TV Rating: 7.5

Background:
Nina wasn't always known by her current name, but most of that information was quite willingly forgotten by Nina to be able to be where she is today. To her family, her old friends and her old enemies, she's dead. She died while working the shadows to help pay for a better education and a better life for herself, or at least, that's the story that was told. The real story wasn't much different except for the details. The woman got in deep with some less-than-professional shadowrunners who were doing jobs to cause chaos. Nina just wanted to make some money, but she couldn't get her own way out. The group did a job against one of Ares' subsidiaries, but Ares convinced Nina to do the right thing, turning on her team leading to a lot of explosions and death. Ares used the opportunity to get themselves a dedicated, young decker who had plenty of potential and Nina got a new lease on life, with money and education she couldn't get herself otherwise.

Since joining Ares, Nina's taken every chance she can to be a different person. With the money and time she has, she's put a lot of effort into being as good as she can at her new job working cybersecurity for Knight Errant. She's also taken in the corporate lifestyle, learning things that she wouldn't think of trying to learn before all this: Languages, protocols, business knowledge, style, whatever she could get her hands on. The more she learned, the more she felt like she could be a different person. Most people know now not to dig into her past, because they won't find much at all.

Nina doesn't wait for someone to get on her case, heading straight over towards the meeting spot, being as ready to go as she can. She wasn't going to carry her entire bag of tricks, but her deck was essential wherever she went. When she made it to Training Center B, she did what she usually did. She found a safe spot to sit, and started to mess around with her deck, being sure to keep her eyes open enough to see people as they come in. The people she's seen so far have seemed like the normal sort who get this kind of job.

Black Thursday was a disaster, plain and simple.
We lost too many good people, too many planes.
We can't let that kind of tragedy happen again.

Bell 'Casustic Bell' Underhilde

Been there, done that and it wasn't worth the effort. Not that life was boring for Caustic Bell but when you are a part of a mercenary outfit among the borders of Aztlan-CSA, the chance to show off is nil. The job for the past ten years was border patrol, nothing special or glamorous even when riding on a horse twice to three times your size.

During a lull in her leave, she spent some time at the local Stonecutter's Guild, a organization that promtes to causes of dwarfs, stating frankly she hated doing what she was doing during a dinner. One of the notable corp dwarfs noted her and passed her complain on to someone else and that someone else passed it to someone else till an invitations to join the Desert Wars this season was extended, with the expectations that she do some good or else.

It doesn't need to be funny, because it will probably just piss them off

Dess
Nuyen: 13000, Rating: 7.5

It was going on a quarter past eight and Dess was still fighting the Zurich ATM for her funds, verifying her biometrics and finally slotting in a shiny new Credstick Gold. Thirteen Thousand nuyen, it'd be enough to weather through this city's ridiculous tourism charges and over-inflated commodities, where walking down the street could run you the cost of a night at the Westin's, and every door led to new and creative ways to keep your bank account ticking down like a timer. Still, it was good to savor the few things that were free, like free drinks.

A set of sandy tan ARES fatigues probably didn't fit the dress code of this club, the وردي الغروب -something sunset- but it did definitely keep her from standing out. Not even a block down from the ARES facility, twenty five stories up, and the bar was essentially under siege by a pack of Firewatch soldiers. A mixed bag of service buddies from Squads A2 and 4, and a handful from B4, from what Dess gathered, and a couple of big spenders were buying the shots. She'd make her way back to an empty stool, pressing her thumb into the RFID patch overlaid on the Credstick before packing it into a pocket, and hitting it off with whatever was left with the drink she ordered an hour ago.

Beyond the roaring herd of soldiers enacting Denver protocol on the bar, there was the assumed crowd of Socialites making waves through the must see media event of the year all milling about the window side. Some people were dancing, others mingling, standard corporate fare, all the thrumming social strata wrapped around the least offensive tunes that moderno electronica had to offer, which made it all the more jarring when the familiar bleating of her Avalon cut through the noise.

Dess clicked through the message, but looking over at the still partying Firewatch, no one else seemed to have their attentions anywhere but on the night ahead. Still, 10 pm left her with the better part of two hours to burn, but sticking around was doing no more favors than just that, burning time. Pitching back her glass, whatever mix of generic flavorings and soywine were in it, Dess makes her way to the elevators, clicking for the transit level, and catching a tram. Maybe being early would give enough time to look around.

Matches
Nuyen: 4500 TV Rating 7

After getting out of that loving interview bullshit, Matches hit's the town. First stop is the seediest looking bar that he could find and then, after some bluster and a few rounds for the house, right to the illicit tobacco dealer the name of which the bartender finally coughed up. 2000 nuyen later, he was the proud owner of a whole fuckin box of primo grade real fuckin cigars. Maybe being a loving corp show pony wasnt so bad after all.

Now, walking down the main drag, cigar clamped behind his left tusk, Matches is feeling, if not happy, less pissed off then he can remember being lately. Until the email pops up in front of him. What the gently caress is this poo poo? Missions? What happened to this trivid bullshit? He fuckin knew this wasnt going to a cake walk but poo poo, tonight was supposed to be for some R&R, maybe find a nice big woman who didnt mind some scars.

gently caress, 20k ny isnt chump change, might as well play along, at this rate he might be able to afford a combat bike, maybe one with a humidor in the saddlebag.

Darius "Wolf" Jones

For the better part of a decade Darius has worked in Knight Errant's animal control division. That might not sound like much but in the Sixth world animal control includes dealing with a pack of barghests rampaging through some moron's estate or getting a basilisk out of the sewers (not an urban myth folks.) This last year had been a good one for his team, in no small part due to Darius's contributions. They had bagged some dangerous critters and prevented more than one media nightmare. Darius was tired of it though, he'd lost count of how many times he'd applied for a trainer position in a K9 unit and been rejected. Stupid human higher-ups wouldn't know talent with animals if it hit them in the face! It probably didn't help that Darius had inadvertently managed to offend just about every superior he'd ever worked under. That was all about to change though, word was if you got into Desert Wars and did well you could pick your next assignment. He had the stats for it and even though he'd had to offer up some big favors to get a recommendation now he was in!

Aleksi Loyalty:2 Connections:2 - Elf salesman of drugs, blts, and toxins both legal and illicit.
Desert Wars and the surrounding games are his bread and butter selling both to contestants and management.
Darius's buddy Flintlock was in last year's Wars and Aleksi
apparently owes him big time for getting him out of a "situation".
Flintlock says Aleksi will hook Darius up.

Bang Loyalty:2 Connections:2 - Ork sniper adept, no mentor spirit. 3rd year in the games.
Came in through Ares's military wing and was very successful in the first year. Halfway through the second
year he a rocket hit too close to home and he lost his left leg. His contract wasn't nearly up yet and so
they fitted him with a cyber-leg and sent him back in. His combat ability is generally back up to snuff
but he's been unable to regain focus to bring his reflexes all the way back to where they used to be.
Fairly friendly but after the accident prone to bouts of isolation and anger. Don't draw attention to his leg.

Jared Loyalty:2 Connections:4 - Mage. Wolf mentor spirit. Worked security for Ares. Came in
Bang's second year to replace a retiring combatant. Very intelligent and sometimes a bit cocky. A good
portion of that self-confidence is well-deserved. When Bang and two other teammates were hit Jared
single-handedly defended their position in a literally awesome display of fiery destruction. Good friends
with Bang but still unnerved by the cyberleg and the results if it had or did happen to him instead.

Darius is talking to a jovial dwarf via trid projector

Darius:...think they actually liked me? We are still talking about me right? Big dumb ork with a mouth too big for my own good? Doubtful, I guess I'll have to take your word for it though ya runt. Stranger things have happened I suppose, I'm surprised I'm still alive let alone still in the game here after that interview.
Dwarf: You worry too much Darius, you probably didn't score any points with the higher-ups letting slip on that op but I doubt they were too pissed about it either. What, you think they like those Mitsuhama pricks? They get to say you were speaking out of line and knock a rival down a few pegs regardless. Don't sweat it, plus you've got bigger things to worry about, if your handlers are anything like mine they're gonna be testing you pretty hard these next few days. Focus on that ya dumb mope. Did you go see Aleksi yet?

Darius shakes his head and the dwarf looks like he's about to lay into him but Darius interrupts him before he can.

Darius:Yeah, yeah I know. You're like the big brother I never had and if I don't listen to you I'm gonna be bleached bones in the sun out here. I'll go see him tomorrow before training, alright? Listen though Flint, I gotta run. Something came over the commlink a bit ago and it looks important. I'll try to call you again before we ship out.

They say their goodbyes and the trid projector winks off

Darius was a bit relieved to end the call, Flintlock had good intentions but sometimes he became over-involved. Rereading the communique he'd received a half-hour ago he winced. He'd been looking forward to relaxing after the call and finishing up The Anatomy of the Nova Scorpion that evening but it appeared that "duty" called. The lump sum payment offered was outlandish to him, he'd always been a salary man with the exception of a few "hazard pay" bonuses (and things had to be quite a bit more deadly than just hazardous to receive that) and one "injury in the line of duty" award and even the award wasn't 20k. Either that meant that he was going to be dead before the games even started or the rules were quite a bit different out here. He grabbed his gear and headed out the door, resigned to his fate one way or another.

Franz Talhoffer

It's sunny in Tamanrassat, and Franz is having an exceedingly good day. After his interview, and subsequent ratings spike, Franz shipped out almost immediately, taking nothing with him except his toolkit, and his freshly purchased greatcoat. The sunlight seems odd to him, having lived in Germany for most of his life, he is used to more clouds. Still, the change is not unwelcome, even if it does mean that passers by burn themselves on his cyberarm casings. Looking over the training schedule, and his newly recieved mail, his face lights up in joy.

"ZWANZIGTAUSEND?! Ja! Die meisten hervorragend!"

Franz blushes slightly at his outburst, pausing only long enough on his jog to Facility B, to flip off some gun-bunny who found german accents amusing.

With a show of his new Ares ID, Franz steps aboard the shuttle, and noticing a familiar face, sits across the way from Mr. White.

"Gutentag, Herr White. It is good to see I am not ze only one with good timekeeping on zis new team." He extends a shining metallic hand, and grins. "Franz. A pleasure to make your acquaintance."

After six years' combat in the UCAS army and another three in Ares' elite Firewatch squad, I thought I had seen it all. Imagine my surprise when I was asked to join Ares' Desert Wars team: the prospects of fame, wealth, and glory were way more than I was ever going to get working for Uncle Sam or guarding some slag with a briefcase.

I suppose I shouldn't have been too shocked to be asked to join the Wars. My unique combination of magical ability and selected augmentations made me a prime candidate when you factor in my track record in actual desert conflicts. I've proven myself time and time again so now it's time to really make my mark.

Birch sighed as he finished reading the short message. gently caress. So much for living the high-life before being shunted out into the desert. He changed out of his clothes and into his KE branded armor, while thinking carefully about what assets he should bring along with him...Surely not the Lynx or the LOX? Too expensive to waste on something like this. He ended up packing up only his flyspy, a crowbar, and his Remington. He also grabbed some of his beetles. Never knew when he'd have a couple hours of R&R from this point forward right? Locked 'n loaded he stepped out the door and headed towards the training facility, trying to ignore the cities attractions and vices that, by all rights, he should be indulging in.

"Call me Tony, Franz. And yeah it looks like we're the first ones here, a pleasure." Tony says as he shakes Franzs metallic hand and grips it, hard. "You know I saw that intro you did with the miss. I bet I can replicate that, let the fans see if metal really is better than meat." Tony says amped up as he turns that handshake into a bit of an arm wrestling competition. "What do you think Franz? I know you have enough power in that arm to make it no contest, but a soldiers's real strength is in his legs. Did you buy legs too or did you train em?"

Franz grins a blinding white smile. "It matters not if you have strength, if you do not know the best method of applying it." Franz returns the arm wrestle, but also begins slowly crushing the Elf's hand. "Your grip is quite strong, for flesh. Something more though, Ja? Most men would have a broken hand by now. Colour me impressed. Good to see I am not vorking with amateurs." He releases the hand, and sits back.

"So, what callsign should I use for you?"

"Bone Density Augmentation and Orthoskin, the best money can buy. Evo produced the bioware though not Ares. You want guns, armor, and cyberwear I go to Ares. For Bioware, I would go to Evo only because thats what their known for. That said I'm looking forward to seeing what jobs they'll have in store for me after this. Anyway on those callsigns, well we're in the desert and it looks like we'll be a bunch of devils. How about we become Al-Shayatin, the devils? You and me bud, we can get things done. Besides we got the top ratings on the team already, we already got the public eye on us. Only makes sense to work that and milk it for all its worth.

Bell 'Casustic Bell' Underhilde

Relax, smile, and get through to it. You are out here suppose to be a good time, not hole up in your cramped bunk before work starts, Bell grumbles while sweeping her eyes from the myriad colors of the masses playing soldier, waiting at Training Facility B for the next stage.

Like yourself. Remember? No pay, no play so you got to go out to play.

She glances over at Mr. Wunderbar and Blondie bubbling on and on, wondering what the hell is their deal.

The shuttle ride is loud, and crowded with people from across the planet, a lot of them wearing Ares Corporate IDs, brought to Tamanrassat for the potential and lucrative profits. You see a few security guards trading handguns and examining each other's customized Ares Predators. Toward the back of the shuttle, Franz also picks out a group of shadowrunners sitting at the other end, looking away from each other but clearly communicating via commlinks and significant glances. Most likely, they had hopped a ride with fake IDs in order to get across the city faster---and quieter. Who knows, though: maybe Ares hard hired them. One of them, a decker, keeps looking at Mr. White's camo suit over like he wants one of his own, but he stops when he catches you looking back. As you get close, you two see Bell, your squadmate, arriving at the same time.

You make your way on foot almost entirely without incident. Your agent buzzes you, though, and asks, [Hey, see you're on the move. What's up?] At least someone out there was watching your back. Most of the wares for sale on the street agitate you more than they interest you, but you do notice a number of small things that would make nice reagents with the proper prep work. Another time, though, maybe? For now, you head toward the training facility, and arrive almost in unison with two of your squad mates: a Mr. White and a Franz Tal-something, German fellow.

You arrive at Training Facility B to find it completely empty, which hasn't been the case any other evening you've stopped by. Whatever was about to happen, Ares made sure it was going to happen with as little disclosure as possible. Your cards opens the door to the dim building, and it looks like only the skeletal, 'night-time' lighting is on. It's quiet throughout the building, and soon after you two start to arm-wrestle, the well-dressed dwarven decker arrives.

You took a cab over, which cost a little more but was worth it to avoid the large, overcrowded public shuttles that most of the population took. After all, what was the point of a stipend if not to live a little nicer? As you ride over, one of the newsfeeds on your deck lights up: the Zeo Evening Spring-Summer Heritage fashion show just started in Paris. The new line looked to play off of the Italian Renaissance, the women in larger gowns and the men in large tunics.

When you arrive, you're still forty-five minutes early, and the place looks completely empty except for Mr. White and Franz, illuminated by a few florescent lights. You find an empty table in the main lobby, and hit the Matrix again, watching for the others. They each arrive, over the next hour or so, as you keep an eye on the fashion show and another on the door.

You make it out of the nightclub without anyone even looking after you, and walk by someone from Squad B4 loses most of his dinner into a trash can. The first tram is too full to get on, and the second tram is a crowded mess, carrying off every person who couldn't (or wouldn't) spend the money on their own cabs. You note three different drug deals happen across the four city blocks it takes to drop you off at Training Facility B, but that was nothing compared to the fistfight you saw break out between a man covered in Red Samurai tattoos and a group of Saeder-Krupp soldiers. When you got off the train, the large Japanese man had already knocked one out cold, broken another's arm, and was in the process of putting a third man through one of the car's plexiglass windows.

You're early, but not the first: you watch as Mr. White and Franz arm-wrestle, and it seems that the dwarven decker is watching the door. Other than those three, it looks like the building is completely empty: strange, but not unexpected for the task at hand. The roar of the city falls away behind the glass doors, and the building's mostly dark. It reminds you of other times you've spent in dark buildings, and you wait for 10 o'clock with the others.

On foot, it takes you just over twenty minutes to get to the training facility. It would've been shorter, but you had to dodge two taxis crossing streets and some guy on the street had a few nice-looking (but clearly stolen) rotodrones for sale, half-price. And he had you going, until the demo shorted out and caught fire: cheap knock-offs, going for double what they should. Even so, you make it to the training facility a little after nine, and find it dark and empty expect for your squad inside. Well, minus a few people, but as early as you were it was kind of strange to find so many of them there. Then again, when Ares said 'jump' its employees usually asked 'how high', right? Your squadmates seem to have congregated in the lobby area of the facility, spread out across several of the tables and comfortable chairs there. Inside the building, the only sounds were their voices and the quiet hum of the vending machines that lined the wall, stocked with the latest in Ares Hyrdrofuilds. You bide your time, waiting for ten.

You cut your conversation with Flintlock short, and realize you're running---well, late isn't the word, but it was certain that some of the other members of your squad would already be there by the time you showed up, well before the 10 o'clock meeting time. So you grab a cab, skipping the over-crowded Ares Shuttle, and make decent time across the six city blocks. Even so, it takes you a solid ten minutes, and it might have been faster to walk: this city is simply full of people, and it's clear the infrastructure to support them has been tacked on instead of built in naturally. You step out of the cab in front of the training facility, and balk at its quiet. You'd been by a few evenings previous, and it had been full of soldiers trying to find their edge. Now the building seemed skeletal, and empty: strange, in your line of work.

As you approach the door, you realize there are a few people inside: some of your squadmates have already arrived. In fact, besides yourself, the only people missing seems to be one of the humans and that crass ork called Matches. You enter the mostly-dark building, your card opening the door, and as you step inside the din of the city vanishes behind you.

However you'd like to represent it, but please link to a character sheet with each post. The way Mr. White's is linked is ideal to me.

You show up promptly at 2145, on the dot, and find the building mostly empty and mostly dark. It looks like the usuals have all been cleared out for a clandestine corporate meeting, and that pretty much lines up with the e-mail that was sent out. Even fifteen minutes out, you've been beat here by most of the squad: everyone but Matches is already there, already waiting for whatever is going to happen. They're all kitted out, too, and it looks like there's about to be some off-the-books Ares operation.

The main drag is full of every type of night life you'd expect in the world's largest mercenary convention, from revolving, lit cases lined with automatic rifles missing serial numbers to prostitutes to cafes full of European hitmen hanging out and hoping for a contract. The cigar was good, and it may be the first time in your life someone had actually sold you the cigars they charged you for. The good Cuban smoke hit your lungs and left a cloud behind you, and as you read your commlink a lady nearby said, "Heya, fella, you need some company? I'm clean, and I'm in no hurry."

She smiled at you, but when you turned and she realized you were an ork she almost flinched. She tried to apologize, but trailed off. "Oh, sorry, I didn't..."

But you had only two hours, which would be the time required to get across the huge city as its population exploded. So much for the night out, right?

You arrived at the training facility at maybe ten 'til, and it looked mostly deserted except for a few of your own squad-mates. That was strange, given the normal hustle and bustle of the place, but it sort of played into the whole 'illicit tasks for money' thing. As you enter, you see the rest of your squad mates hanging about. So much for ten o'clock, right?

As all of you settle in, you see a young man come in, dressed in a Hugo Boss pinstripe from two years ago. He smiles at you all and nods, giving a flick of his wrist as a wave. His English is shockingly good, and it seems to have a practiced British sound instead of a heavy German accent. "Hello, Vance Kantor, Executive Assistant to Mr. Johansson at Ares Europe. As you may know, we've also responsible for Ares' Middle Eastern operations, and we typically oversee the more technical details of the Desert Challenge. Obviously, our entertainment branch deals with the public-facing side of things, but Mr. Johansson and Ares Europe has been entrusted with managing Alpha Company this year. Now, if you'll follow me to the conference room on the second floor, we've got an exciting and time-sensitive objective that will serve to further Ares Europe's financial security as well as help prove this new squad to Mr. Johansson himself."

You follow him up to the second floor, to a large room with a glass table and high-backed, pleather chairs. Inside the room, Kantor activates an area jammer and then he offers out a stack of manila folders. Inside is a map of a large asphalt strip and supporting facilities, and from the coordinates you'd guess it's about an hour east by air. Also inside are a number of satellite photographs of the airfield dated earlier in the afternoon, showing the asphalt covered in dozens of light helicopters, bearing all sorts of news outlet logos.

"About an hour east of here, the Algerian government in conjunction with the Desert Wars Committee has been kind enough to offer every news outlet housing and parking for their coverage helicopters. It was proposed a few weeks ago that we intercede. We've got a Lockheed troop transport on standby, which will take you most of the way out there. Your mission is to destroy as many of those helicopters as possible, using the provided munitions, in order to make it appear that Berber rebels have attacked the location. It must look like Berber rebels opposing the games. Costumes will be in the troop transport.

"When you destroy these helicopters, Ares will graciously offer to lend out a shining new fleet of Ventures to the reporters that have lost their transportation. The expected result is that it will appear most news teams are using Ares hardware by choice, and it will also make our corporation seem more gracious. It's free advertising for the next four months. We'd like this dealt with in the next few hours. Resistance should be light, but you have strict orders not to harm civilians. Are there any questions?"

Dess posed no questions directly at first, sifting from the photos and maps for any details on security, likely state employees, as hiring outside would show favoritism by the local government and the DW committee. On the other side of things, she searched for sheets on these 'provided munitions'. Baring some contempt of the rules, her and all the others would be kitted out like a Firewatch team, and a hit squad of berber rebels decked out in full Ares gear would likely set off a few alarms if and when they were seen. If new, more indigenous weapons were being provided over their Ares gear, it would be important to know.

Assuming there was no such intel provided, she could always ask now, with such questions as

"Intel. Security. Numbers? Government workers?"

or

"The munitions. Full kit of equipment? Or just demolitions for the helicopters?"

Birch silently cursed himself for leaving behind his heavyduty drones. He'd assumed anything taking place in the city would be low-key. On the other hand they probably wouldn't be any use. He didn't know what the local Berbers used, but he doubted that it involved top-of-the-line drones fitted with an armorshredding assault cannon...
He let the spook and the cute dwarf finish their questions before adding in one of his own:

He sizes up Mr. Kantor ("another wussy suit slag, guy probably cries if he steps on some gum") and ponders the mission request. Standing slightly behind the rest of the strike team and perfecting his well-trained Army pokerface, Karl pipes up.

"What kind of security oversees the helicopter storage area and what motivation do the Berbers theoretically have for destroying these birds? By the way, what's our motivation for taking this sidejob, seems to me we've got a good gig already."

Trust me.

The dossier's map marks three security points, one in the main building that doubles as housing, the second in a small booth that overlooks the large airfield, and the third covering the other side of the desert. (I'll put together a map when I get home this evening; sorry for the delay. In fact, I'll post a dossier PDF.) In the margin is the following comment: "12 security guards on duty, 24 on standby. 8-hour shifts, changes at 0800, 1600, 0000." Also included is a document describing the Hughes troop transport, including its manifest. The manifest also listed prices for everything, and it was clear Ares was fronting some serious cash for this endeavor.

code:
10x Berber Desert Garb
10x Meta Link Commlink
02x Miniwelder (with 30 minutes fuel each)
10x AK-97
20x AK-97 magazines, with regular ammo
02x Aztechnology Striker
10x Anti-vehicle Rockets
20x Grenade, Thermal Smoke
10x SEMTEX Plastic Explosives (Rating 20)
10x Detonator Timers
Vance goes down the list of questions, trying to answer them in order. First he addressed the spook's questions, "Most of this should be in there, but to review: there are a dozen guards on duty at any given time, and about 30 other government employees responsible for food, power, and housing. We haven't provided 'full kits', per say, but we've given you the equipment most commonly used by Berber rebels during these types of attacks: AK-97s, old Israeli SEMTEX, low-end Strikers, and cheap Meta Links for communication. We've also included a few less-conventional items to make your job easier, including a miniwelder and a full complement of thermal smoke."

After straightening his tie and checking his iPhone, Vance fielded Bell's inquiries with a precise, analytical tone. Whoever this guy was, this clearly wasn't his first time conducting this sort of meeting. "The only 'opposing force' is those 36 soldiers. They're Algerian military, and the Berber rebels typically try to avoid firefights with them because they're far better-financed. These soldiers probably got the poor draw when getting this assignment, so expect them to be unengaged until the gunfire starts. It's unlikely any mage would be put on civilian detail, either. Air support should be non-existent, and we've gone out of the way to ensure, through back channels, a lack of satellite coverage for the next eight hours. This thing may be filmed by their on-site equipment, which means you should really wear the provided full-face masks. And use the AKs: they're one of the best ways to establish it wasn't a professional team."

"In regards to the civilians, these are the reports that will be covering the Desert Challenge. We need them alive. While a few casualties occur every year, due to accidents and bad positioning, a rebel attack that leaves a large number of them dead will cause immense political backlash and hurt our television presence. By the time you arrive, they should mostly be tucked away in beds, but that doesn't mean some idiot won't try to get a camera and film the attack. If it comes to blows, use only non-lethal force: hit them with the butt of your gun, not a bullet."

When Birch threw out his own question, Vance looked about ready to roll his eyes. Somehow, though, he controlled the impulse and said, "It's possible the rebels would steal a helicopter, but it would be impractical to impossible for you to appropriate one. It would require removing a lot of tracking hardware and specialized news equipment, and even then there's a large chance it won't be an Ares so we can't allow you to use it in the games. If you were dead-set on it, it is possible that you could sell it for parts, but that risks an incredible amount of exposure for yourself and Ares, Mr. Berk-told."

When Karl asked about motivations, Vance took a moment to answer, as if trying to figure out exactly how to phrase it. "For Berber motivation, attempting to shut down media coverage of the Desert Challenge is a serious first step toward shutting down the games. The imagined end goal here is reclaiming the less-irradiated Libyan desert for settlement. This sort of attack has become less common in the last five years, but that isn't to say it doesn't occur from time to time. While civilian targets are typically left alone, it isn't entirely unprecedented. If you'll recall, a news choppers vanished over the Sahara during last year's game."

It was clear that this target was a large, infrastructural point for staging media coverage of the Desert Challenge. While the Berber rebels usually focused on military targets, it wasn't too far-fetched to think that they may eventually target media infrastructure to damage the news coverage, and thus income, of the Desert Wars enterprise. It was dirty work, and sure to result in some serious political fallout, but the overall strategy was sound for disrupting the games. If Ares didn't have a fleet of new transportation on stand-by, this might even have the power to actually delay the Challenge's start, and it was likely security would triple after this incident.

"Your motivation, Mr. Bradford, is continued employment. You're an Ares employee, and this is an order directly from our corporate offices. The 20 thousand nuyen is hazard pay, not a hiring fee. Anything else?"

The compliment of gear fit the bill for just about any number of generic rebellious groups in any given third world political landscape. Full cloaks and face masks for masking identities, and enough high explosives to level the main airfield.

"Should touch down just under an hour before the midnight shift change. Guards on their last rounds, tired, probably not attentive. Perfect. Can probably move in through the desert, rig the helicopters on the far end without being seen. The ones closer in we'll be seen. Fire the AK's, yell a bunch. Blow the charges and disengage in the confusion... Ideally. Four... Five casualties. Not counting anyone caught in the blast."

Vance continued, refraining from commenting on the forming plan. "There are maybe two hundred civilians, give or take. We don't have an exact head count, but the facility can house roughly 300 civilians and we have reports that maybe two thirds of the rooms are booked. I can probably get an exact number, if it's important."

"Their security system is fairly standard: swipe doors, swipe gate, everyone is issued IDs. I think the fence might be electrified, but we haven't been able to confirm that. Simply put, our reporter won't get close enough to find out. There are cameras pointed at the desert, but they don't seem to be thermally equipped or anything, so nightfall should go a long way. Look, they aren't expecting this attack, and it should keep everyone on tilt for the first minute or two."

When Matches asks after the armaments, Vance replies, "I can try to find an RPK last-minute, but I don't exactly have time for clearance for it. It would be better if one of you could find it on the streets: they're practically littered with the things. But whatever you do, do not use Ares weapons. A single kilo of 'TEX will gently caress one beyond repair no problem. Assuming the loving caps work that is."

This assumes that 2070 choppers are still about as fragile as modern day ones, but I assume a blow up rotor is still not a field repairable thing.

QuantumNinja
Mar 8, 2013

Trust me.
I pretend to be a ninja.
I'm sorry for the following shadowrun logic, but this is the best I can figure it:

Most of the helicopters will be on bar with the Fed-Boing Commuter. They have 16 Body and 8 Armor. The choppers each have a CM of 20, but presumably CM penalties apply to the Pilot, which is 4. So any helicopter that takes 12DV would probably refuse to fly.

Explosives are pretty weird in Shadowrun. The Rating 20 explosives, when attached to the surface, will do 20 + Demo Hits DV versus 16 Bod + 8 Armor - 2 AP. If I'm buying hits to resist damage, anything taking at least 18DV is presumably going to be knocked out of commission before damage resistance. Damage falloff occurs at -2 / m, so you're good for at least 3 meters in every direction with 2 hits. And that doesn't count the (probably negligible) shrapnel damage. I'd also argue that the chopper would fly into other choppers from the explosion if it was angled correctly, counting as a 'Ram' or 'Crash'.

All this is to say, I'd estimate the choppers would be within 4 meters of each other, so any given charge will destroy 5-6 choppers on 2 Demo Hits, and another 4 if you get 6+ hits. And those are essentially destroyed, not repairable in any reasonable amount of time.

The rockets have double the damage falloff, but RAW seems to imply the -10 AP to vehicles is uniform across the entire range of the explosion. So that's 16 DV to disable a chopper (accounting for the four hits it will buy to resist), so 4 hits, than 8, for 6 choppers / 10 respectively.

If anyone would like to propose an alternate suggestion, feel free, but this seems about fair to me.

"We're going into this in disguise so there's no way our bulky armor suits will work. Can you give us some armored vests to wear under the rebel clothes?

The way I see it, we don't even have to completely destroy the helos - just do enough damage that they'll be knocked out of commission for a few months, or be seen as too expensive to repair. The C4 and rockets we've got should be more than enough, and we can use the AKs as a diversion without too many casualties. We do enough damage to the propellers and chassis of the birds and they may as well be sent to the scrap yard. These civvies aren't going to use choppers with damaged machinery."

Sounds right here';s the thing. Any explosive DIRECTLY ATTACHED to a vehicle or barrier halves it armor.

Whoops, I misread that sentence. That's what I get for doing explosion maths at 4 am. That's only -4 armor total, up from -2, and either way the helicopter with the explosives directly attached is pretty much guaranteed to shrapnel. The important thing is that the explosion enjoys an ongoing -2 across the blast, so other choppers caught in the blast can only buy 5 hits, which means any given charge will destroy 5-6 choppers on 1 Demo Hit, and another 4 if you get 5+ hits. And those are essentially destroyed, not repairable in any reasonable amount of time.

Vance glances at his watch, a chrome-and-leather number that looks like it still uses real gears, as Matches rises. "It's just after 2210. The facility is an hour east of here by air, so if you intend to hit them before the shift change you should leave in a little over half an our, around 2245. I can have your transport on the roof here by then, if this pickup spot works for your squad. I'll be sure they load 200 machine gun rounds up. And I'll check on the armored vests, but that shouldn't be an issue. Is there anything else?"

The Nuyen is current nuyen, and the rating is the television ratings which I have out with recruitment. Other information can be useful, like current ammo and stuff, but at least link to your original character sheet in your name (and try to keep it roughly up to date).
