TVDB doesn't allow sports content. I've tried and it's been deleted repeatedly.

This is exactly how I'm doing it. I guess my only real question now is: Is there a way so that instead of the episode number in plex showing up it can instead say the title of the episode? "Practice, Qualifying, etc..."

for sports I just set up another "home videos" section called sports and I can figure out what everything is based on the filename. It's not beautiful, but it works. For F1 specifically I'm having sabnzbd rename the files to 01-01. drivers press conference, 01-02 practice one, 01-03 practice two, etc... to keep them in the right order. 01 for the race then -02 for the event, like practice 1 or 2.

I don't keep them after I watch them so my method isn't really geared towards archiving.

Are there any news updates in regards to Apple TV opening up as a platform where we'd get a native plex app without requiring a jailbroken apple TV or the plexConnect python script? I prefer to have an app instead of airplay from my phone, but browsing on the TV is a bit of a pain. It's all minor complaints, just wondering if there's a smoother way to browse without another device in the mix.

The platform opening would be really nice but they didn't announce anything like that at the WWDC last week so it's not happening anytime soon. That being said, I've been using plexconnect for a couple of months now on an ATV3 and it's working great. If you're having trouble setting it up I can try to walk you through it in an IM or something.

Thanks, I tried hitting refresh after adding a new episode to the folder but it didn't do anything. It's possible that it got queued behind another update though. I'm going to try attaching one of my drives directly to my windows machine to see if that's faster, I think samba might be the bottle neck.

I really think the network is the issue. Does the linux box have the juice to transcode? If so, why not just install plex media server there and cut the windows machine out altogether.

i checked the settings on my laptop (which is working fine) and the settings are duplicated. the issue persists.

if i try clicking on an individual movie, the "fix incorrect match" function results in a " no matches were found using this agent" , regardless of which agent i select.

if i run XBMC on the very same machine, scanning the same folder, it works fine.

I mean in the library itself in the drop down that says freebase try themoviedb there. I don't know if that will work, it's just my best guess.

However, it also removes all sub folders and spits everything out onto the main page/dashboard. I haven't looked into if its possible to regain sub folders.

Airplay isn't generally good enough in my room, whereas a direct stream from the HTPC should suffice. I'm looking into PlexConnect at the moment, would that let me unbreak my ATV and hit newest firmware and still be able to browse my library albeit in a limited form? I'm a bit worried that one of my most used elements might be loss - I have an SMB share of my unsorted video folder that I can just idly browse in XBMC's Video menu, I get the feeling I won't be able to do that with Connect.

I had a jailbroken ATV 2 that I used XBMC on. I wiped it, restored it, re-jailbroke, and sold it on ebay for $250ish. Went out and bought 2 ATV3s (One for the bedroom, one for the living room) and still had money left over. I switched to plex. I have Plex and PlexConnect running on a PC and I have absolutely no issues. Everything works great after it's set up. I populate my library with sabnzbd using rss feeds from my newznab indexer of choice. I've never understood the need for something like CouchPotato, sickbeard, or nzbdrone myself. Are those only for people who's newznab indexer doesn't have RSS feeds?

Yeah it sounds like most of my setup will move over, it's just narrowing down the little things I can't see obvious solutions without getting hands on (Can I view SMB shares in Plex Connect? It doesn't appear so by default. Same with moving from SAB -> NZBGet etc, but that's another thread).

If you map a drive in windows plex will just treat that as a regular drive on your system and use that in the library. Same if you mount that to a mount point in Linux or Mac OS. The AppleTV doesn't care where the files actually live. The PC (running either mac, windows, or linux, I've tried them all and they all work equally well) that plex sits on just streams (either directly if the ATV supports the codecs or transcoding if it doesn't) the video so the only thing your ATV is communicating with is the machine that Plex sits on.

Power of control is really good in these apps. For example, if someone mentions anything that's available to view on iMDB , I can just launch the iMDB app on my phone, hit 'Add to Watchlsit' and it gets queued up by Couch. I used to use RSS feeds back years ago, but SB/CP were like new leases of life with regards to control and categorising my library without any real thought.

The app I use on my phone searches binsearch and any API enabled newznab server. I search for a movie or a show, it finds the relevant files, I can download them, all from within the app. sabnzbd then puts everything in the right place when it's done downloading them based on the category in which they were downloaded, tv/movie/etc... the app knows what category to put it in based on the group the file was downloaded from, so it's all automated. If I'm on my PC viewing the newznab site in the browser I can add items to my sab queue from right there. I still don't understand what extra I would get with CP or SB.

Thanks for going over it a bit more. Just so I'm 100% clear, the SMB shares I'm talking about aren't in my XBMC library, they're temporary holding places (or uncategorisable things like indy wrestling shows) that I just connect to as an SMB share over the network and play directly. I grab a ton of stuff I don't intend to archive, and don't really want to change my habits! I'm hoping I can continue that, but I think it's going to be a case of 'yes in Plex full theater client, no in PlexConnect' but I'm gonna just bite the bullet and find out.

You can make a library for that folder called "home movies" that just puts raw files in your library and doesn't scrape or categorize them. It's good for porn and sports which don't have metadata databases.

I have a desktop PC acting as a media server for Plex, using an apple TV with plexconnect for viewing. Everything works great but when Plex has to transcode the fan on the computer is really loud and annoying. I know Plex doesn't do GPU transcoding but I'm still unsure of which fan it is that I'm hearing, the CPU or GPU. Is transcoding hearing up the case so much the GPU needs to cool off, or is it the CPU fan? Are there any tools I can run to monitor the fans to see which one is making noise so I know which one to replace?

I completely uninstalled the media server and reinstalled, same old database, no new items found. What else can I do to fix it?

Maybe a dumb question but are you sure you're putting your new stuff in a folder that's scanned? One scenario I'm thinking of is that maybe you're using a library folder that displays files from multiple locations as one single folder so in Windows explorer it looks as if you're putting the files in the right place but really they might be somewhere else? I know "videos" under "this computer" is one of those library folders where it shows content from a bunch of different locations as one cohesive folder. It's a long shot but maybe that can point you in the right direction.

I never have problems and I just have all of the files for a particular tv show in one folder not divided into seasons. It's still bigger than I would like but I needed something big enough so it would get decent airflow and accommodate the video card. I changed a few things about the setup since I posted. I use the ATV4 instead of the xbone for plex and I replaced the short video card with a full size because 2 fans are quieter than 1. I was also having some power supply issues (spontaneous shutdowns) so I replaced it with a corsair 600M. I also went back to the Intel cpu fan instead of the zalman because temps were fine and it's quieter.

Avi, mkv, and mp4 are all basically the same thing. They are containers for compressed video. The type of container will have little bearing on whether they can be transcoded. The codec the video is compressed with is much more important than the container type when it comes to transcoding and direct playing. If the video was originally encoded with an obscure or inefficient codec that is the issue, not that the video is contained within an avi file.
