Hereby it is manifest that during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man.

Manasseh is a name of ill omen that does not bode well.

The name Manasseh is usually related to either A. one of the twelve tribes, one of the most powerful of the northern tribes that joined in Jeroboam's revolt against Jerusalem and the Davidic line, forming the half-pagan and reviled Northern Kingdom of Israel, and B. King Manasseh of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, the idolatrous son of righteous old King Hezekiah, who undid all his father's works and promoted paganism throughout Judah during his half-century reign. Either way, it's a name that carries implications of susceptibility to paganism and idolatry and suspect commitment to Judaism.

This will be fun! :v:

I've been neglecting my own thread for too long (going to finally update later today), and I want to finish that off before taking on other LP commitments.

A rule banning those in the line of succession from marrying outside of proper Judaism (IE no non-Jews or heretical Karaites) could be good, but it might be too early for something that...absolute.

One of our AI vassals has been a heroic ally, helping time and time again and proving to be nothing but loyal. The (roleplaying) player could grant him a nice duchy as a reward and make his law "the descendants of X shall now and forever be the Dukes of Y," causing problems down the line when the great-grandson of our bro proves to be a rebellious, conspiratorial prick.

The Karaites were a major sect in the Middle Ages, and rejected the Oral Law (Talmud and its interpretations) as a complement to the Written Law (the Tanakh). Rejecting the Talmud led Karaites to behave quite differently from more traditional Jews (most notably the lack of a ban on mixing meat and dairy products in their version of the Kosher dietary restrictions) and led mainstream Jews to reject the idea that they were even Jews.

Agree completely on the thread title.

Thread title would have room for the Medes if you took the words "Let's Play" off the front of it, and it's pretty much implied.

The Karaites are a fascinating sect and I wouldn't mind babbling on about them, but for now let's take this sentence.

The Update posted:

There is more troubling news from Imeretia: A sect of Chosen People who forsake the Mishnah and Talmud, essentially rejecting the Rabbinic interpretations of the Torah in favour of holding only that to be divinely inspired. I must see about holding proper theological debates between those that care about such things.

The standard Jewish line is that there were two traditions laid down at Sinai, the Written and Oral traditions, the former of which became the Torah and the latter of which existed as folk traditions passed down until they were written down in the 1st and 2nd centuries CE when the survival of Judaism itself was in open question and writing poo poo down became of paramount importance. This is also why Jews tend to look down on the Protestant Christian notion of just reading the Bible...reading Torah is important as a community exercise, and, in fact, reading big chunks of it every week in a group is an expected part of every observant Jew's lifestyle, but it's also not sufficient because there is a whole second tradition you aren't going to interface with if you just explore the Tanakh/Hebrew Bible all day.

This first set of commentary and promulgation of the Oral Tradition is the Mishnah, written by Rabbis from the first generation post-Temple all the way to the end of the 3rd century. The Talmud lays out the Mishnah and then the opinion of rabbis from the 3rd century to the 6th century as to what the Mishnah truly means in practice.

The Karaite faith rejects the entire process at its stem, claiming that the very idea of dual Oral and Written traditions was wrong from the start and that there is only the Tanakh and that the holy law is just that which is stated in the Torah, interpreted in the most obvious interpretation possible. This difference led to Karaite Judaism having radically different takes over what most of the religion meant and stood for, leading them to, by extension, adapt a fairly radically different lifestyle. Mainstream Judaism viciously condemned the Karaites as heretics and anti-Semites outside of the Jewish community rarely treated the Karaites much better than more ordinary Jews, leaving them a community doubly on the outs, but Karaites briefly, in the Middle Ages, achieved a status as one of several main branches of Judaism, visible and deserving recognition, if not necessarily respect. Today, however, they are a tiny, almost non-existent minority of an already tiny religion, to the point where few realize that they still exist.

Yeah, but we can't exactly expel the Jews if we can't afford to pay them back.

Star of David isn't period-appropriate anyway, it wasn't primarily associated with Judaism until the 19th century, and in the Medieval period it's about as likely to be used as a symbol of occult magic (the Seal of Solomon) as it is a sign of Judaism.
